KFC in China is not even famous for its original fried chicken that they sells in US. They have so many other burgers, roasted chicken wings, some form of beef and chicken burritos, and local Chinese food that are actually delicious. Their Portuguese egg tart is freaking amazing. I actually miss the KFC in China while currently living in US.
Which KFC in China/Shanghai did you guys go to? My experience has been terrible cold fries, bubble guts after eating smh. Ya'll simply can't be serious.
I live in China. KFC is HUGE in China. Arguably about as big, if not bigger than McDonald’s. I have seen more KFC joints in my six years here, than the rest of my life in America
one thing is because unlike burgers and other foods, Fried chicken exists in every culture in some form, so it is easy to export to another culture with minimal modification. They also were first in China for western fast food, which gave them early brand recognition. They also made very good political and business connections in China which helped. But the fact that fried chicken is universal means minimal need to explain the cuisine to customers
There're lots of restaurants in China, which means there's a lot of competition. Not only that, KFC is relatively independently operated by a Chinese food company in China, so the menu items are quite different compared to those in the US. They also have new items coming out frequently, and they do taste good in most cases. But in US, KFC is basically just boring low quality fried chicken all day long. In fact, the same goes for most fast-food restaurants in the US. They barely change menu items and just have the same stuff for many years. Really wondering how fast-food chains like that can survive.
China is totalitarian monster created by American corporate greed! If you look where the bulk of US jobs went to and compare it to what happened to the middle class in America and in China in the last thirty years, you ought to come to this conclusion. We can't have our economies depend on totalitarian regimes and be free in our democratic aspirations for the future, period! Our experience of the last thirty plus years has proven this indisputably. West, Taiwan and Ukraine included, must completely decouple its economies and online space from totalitarian China and Russia BEFORE it is TOO LATE, ASAP!
In America they survive because many people here love cheap garbage food and they don't have to cook. And Americans love the same stuff over and over for many years. It's why we get married and watch the same shows with the same characters for 97 seasons. I go to McDonald's like 4 times per year. I bring my dogs to get nuggets after their vet appointments. And KFC here in the states is complete trash. I mean even for fast food standards. But these places survive here in the States because in this country fast food places and supermarkets are cathedrals.
@@baronvonjo1929 Because people in the U.S. will gladly eat terrible garbage that is unhealthy for us, as long as it has that "salt, sugar, fat" combo. We don't mind dirty floors or bad service. They figure if American consumers don't like what's being served to them, oh well they are welcome to eat something else.
@jenniferesein4813 I disagree as various companies in different segments have fallen behind in various points in history by competitors that provide better service. I mean in my area of the nation for example a gas station brand called Quick Trip changed the entire landscape for gas stations. Before they came, it was all small, dirty, run down buildings with bad service. QT took so much business away from various chains that many closed and others had to do massive renovations to compete because the service and quality were miles ahead. If you offer Americans better service and cleaner locations, they will come. It's been proven over and over.
KFC has done the best localization in China, and Yum China is even an independent listed company. Separate from Parkson Worldwide. KFC has penetrated deeply into the market in China. In many county-level cities, KFC arrived earlier than McDonald's. KFC has a Chinese regional snack menu and also sells Chinese breakfast. Has been fully integrated into Chinese social culture and catering culture
It’s not just China. It’s not just KFC. Most American food franchises are doing a lot better overseas, like Southeast Asia. I remember taking a vacation to the Philippines a few months ago and tried a Wendy’s single patty hamburger. OMG! It tasted so good compared to US. Also tried their Wendy’s bulgogi style green salad. It’s awesome!
They probably tried in every market how much they can lower the quality without loosing too much customers. Mc Donalds over here is getting worse and worse, taste and portion size go down and prices pretty much doubled for the last two years, but they don't seem to loose too much customers over it...
The first time when I tried the authentic KFC in the US, I could barely swallow. The taste of the KFC in China is so much better, not to mention the creativity of the new items and quality of the service.
Just coming back a couple days ago from Harbin China. With out a doubt the best fried chicken I've had in Asia. Ever. The KFC experience was also insane with many different promotions and modern and sleek interiors. Super clean and completely alien from Canada!
But I thought china is so authoritarian that eating KFC would be seen by the government as being pro-US? Do they install CCTV cameras all over the place to catch these west-loving traitors?
@@Playboipete the magic of Korean fried chicken is the sauce. If you don't like that sauce, it is rather hit or miss. Also, you will find best chicken everywhere and in every form.
Technically KFC different every country. I traveled all over Asia and SA and from USA. India, Indonesia insane spicey. S korea triple fried. Maylasia sour, and so on.
You forgot to mention the most important part, that KFC was the very first Western restaurant that opened its doors in China. Not only that KFC in China also consistently partnering itself with video games and pop culture icons that were popular in China such as their partnership with Genshin Impact, a famous mobile-game in China further solidify it's consumer base
reminds me of cafe, in europe, latte is latte. but here in china, they have coconut latte, cheese latte, rice latte, persimmon latte, rose latte, wine latte... and actually, they are quite good!
What’s missing from this news video is that the food menu in China’s KFC, Pizza Hut, and McDonald’s are different than the US. In fact, the fast food in China is actually mouth watering good along with fast service. Meanwhile, here in the US we get to eat almost inedible food that also comes with bad service and then we wonder why sales are down. Perhaps the YUM brand CEO in China should also run the US market too if they want to compete with McDonald’s and increase profits.
Pizza Hut in the West is considered any other Pizza joint, however in China it’s viewed like you’re going for “Italian”. It comes off more exotic and as a special fine dinning experience. You can order escargot, Crème Mushroom Soup, etc (yes not very Italian). Menu and atmosphere is completely different.
In grad school I worked with several Chinese students. For one of their birthdays we got KFC, because there wasn't a KFC in town we drove 30 miles just to get it. I remember the look on his face when we surprised him with KFC, but I will never forget what he said: "This tastes like home." As a child KFC was always a treat, and when he could have it in the USA with his whole lab, it was the most special thing. I thought it was humorous since I've always thought of KFC as an American thing, but it's huge in China.
KFC is localization is so great. I was born as raised in Sichuan province, where they provide a spicy power along with the original chicken, which is so delicious. And it's until I am 15 years old, the year I traveled in Shanghai, when I realized that this powder is not provided nationwide. I think that's the reason KFC is so successful in China.
Take KFC breakfast every working day. I have a membership every quarter, which just cost me $4. And I got 40% off every first order every day. Breakfast and K Cafe cost me $2 every day only. I ordered my Breakfast and K Cafe on the metro 5 minutes before arriving at the office on my iPhone. I pick up Breakfast and K Cafe without stopping. How cool is that!
I’m in American working in China and yes, but also drives KFC is not just of the food it’s because they have a huge coffee selection that you can grab and go and the coffee is quite nice. It’s an alternative to Starbucks and other coffee businesses around and you can always depend on the fact that there’s a KFC nearby that offers a coffee now with regards to Taco Bell. Like I said, I’m an American working with a decent salary but taco Bell will hurt the wallet in many cases and if that’s in my case, then that will mean 80% of the population will not go to Taco Bell. I don’t see Taco Bell being a successful franchise here I passed by a lot has empty seats.
I was teaching in Guangzhou, China from 2009-2013. My observation is that KFC is a place for family dinning. McDonald's is a place for teenagers to hangout or business people to meet . There is a Starbucks inside the Forbidden city, Beijing 😅 when I visited. The craziest KFC menu are the Chinese donuts, definitely deep fried, crunchy to go with the porage 😅. The egg tarts are from the Portuguese national dessert, introduced in Macau and spreads to the mainland because its just delicious. I was visiting in Peru in September 2023, i spend many hours at the Lima airport, every food court counters are Americans brands, you can named it, kfc, McDonald's, Starbucks, Dunkin donuts 😅 i wanted to try local food, but just cannot find any!
My dad has worked for KFC China for over 25 years. I still remember that he was always on business trip to looking for suppiler for a whole week during the fast expansion of KFC in the early 2000s.
Not gonna lie, I was born in China and grew up as a kid there until I moved to U.S. Even back in early 2000s, being able to go to KFC in China was a luxury for the average household because it was very expensive to eat American fast food in China. You can easily spend 50 RMB 20-30 years ago for one or two people, and the average household income per month was only about 300 RMB. It still is kind of expensive even today. But I remember the way they made their chicken for the locals were vastly different than how they would make it in America, because they had to cater to the locals' flavor. The chicken was cooked with way more spices and packed with flavors I felt like, and it just tasted way better. When I moved to America and had their KFC, the taste was just not the same. It was a lot more disappointing because the chicken was dry. The chicken they serve now in KFC in America just doesn't taste the same as it was back then, and it feels like the quality has gone down a lot compared to how they originally started. My only advice is that you try KFC yourself in China and then you'll understand how better it taste compared to the ones in America because of the customization they do catered to their locals.
@@lvjinbin28 KFC is mostly for parents to take their kids because kids love the kids meal. Most local adults would just rather eat like a big plate of chow mein or soup noodles for half of the cost, and it's more filing and comforting because some places let you have unlimited refills of noodles and soul until you're satisfied. It's just a no brainer to eat those instead of fast food and spend more money. A family of 3 is just better off going to an all you can eat hotpot place and pay like 100 RMB than 100RMB at KFC, because 100 RMB isn't enough to feed a family of 3 full, especially if you want to eat a bit more.
for the vast majority of Chinese, it's still on the expensive end. It's only really for the "middle class," which while you may see them all around you if you're living in a high-tier city, are not even close to the majority of the population. As you may know, Chinese people also like to order a lot of food, better to have too much than too little. Whenever I order for my family, I'm spending hundreds of rmb @@lvjinbin28
Because chinese cuisine are light years ahead of the rest of the world, even McDonald's and KFC in China are fully localized and are out of this world good and unfortunately the Americans back home wouldn't have an idea. Their McWings is even better than popeyes here.
KFC in Hong Kong is much more well managed than those in US. The restaurants are clean and staff is young, energetic, and cheerful; and they offer food that's tailored to local culture. Love their chicken rice dish and custard tarts 😋
@@lskwong9113 Exactly! Same feeling. And the same situation happens to Pop Eyes, McDonald's. Burger King is a little better. And honestly, most of those staff who don't care are black.
When I was growing up in Shanghai, KFC was seen as a step up, a more upscale/interesting place to go eat. Young guys will take girls there on dates. It's interesting when I came to study in the US, and noticed that most people here in the US doesn't think that way about KFC, more as a cheap, taste good but unhealthy place eat, so yeah, no going there for dates. LOL. Relative to income, US KFCs are also a lot cheaper than in China.
it was true for some ppl maybe 20 years ago. Kfc is nothing upscale about for the locals in first tier cities after 90s. KFC is universaly considered unhealthy but affordable
KFC in China is totally another level. Its actually good with all the flavours (if you don't like Chinese flavours its fine because they still do all the original ones just as good), its really cheap if you take part in online surveys or get promo codes etc. Also, KFC in China innovates at least 4 or 5 times every year and basically change a big chunk of their menu which means that unless you are very heavily addicted to KFC, you are pretty much guaranteed a new experience every time.
One thing not talked about is they also have the best TOYS, think happy meals from the 90s. In my two months stay last year, they did collaborations with Dragon Ball Z, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, Doraemon, Honkai Starrail, and the Asian Game mascots. There was always some recognizable merch from other media, not just toys but also limited time chicken buckets (which they give you separately from the food so it doesn't get oily). It's also not just physical merch, they dress up the whole store with whatever collaboration they're doing.
@@nabihbawazir8019 No, funny enough I don't remember China's McDonald's offering any toys. I mean they probably do, but it's not advertised to the level KFC does.
Popeyes could learn a thing or two about separating the food from the chicken so it all doesn’t get oily. I’ve never seen so much oil in fast food as Popeyes.
I don't know if someone will ever read this but the thing I'm glad to be able to watch youtube content again. No kidding it was really hard for me, regardless whether it was all mental or not. It's a blessing to watch content again.
Fun insight on a iconic brand and how they do things overseas, im from Australia and travel SEA and love seeing how different things are compared to home !
in Vietnam, each KFC store is a nice restaurant, clean, good services... and I think it's normal, people in the USA see KFC is like a fast-food store but we look inside the purse before coming in:)) like a Luxury Restauran in case of price and decoration:)
KFC is operated as fully independent franchise operations in Japan (and in China). So although they use the KFC name they operate independently. They have done a much better job at adapting and maintaining quality in their markets. Now, in the US there has been a lot more competition, so things are lot more difficult for KFC here. However, the management of the U.S. operations have not been as good. Quality has suffered and market share has been lost.
KFC in China is not the same company. It was spun off into Yum China, becauss the Yum Brands dod not having the managerial capacity for the expansion. Yum China's doesn't have any real managerial connection. It just has to pay a 3% royalty on all sales. So it is basically just a Chinese company with an American facade.
In Australia KFC was going downhill a few years ago because of poor sanitation and food preparation practices resulting in a lot of KFC food poisoning cases however in 2017-2018 they massively cleaned up their act and are now massively thriving with them being on par with McDonald’s and Burger King which is known as Hungry Jacks in Australia! Also KFC in Australia now has better quality food compared to McDonald’s and maybe Hungry Jacks! :)
@@davidm5417 Nope I’m just a local in Australia! Pretty much me and quite a few people I knew had bad experiences with KFC’s food before the reform! :)
@@FluffyAlpaca81 I guess that’s one of the good locations! Pretty much previously some McDonald’s locations were plagued with issues like unsatisfactory OHS practices and poor management however now days the new issue with them is shrinkflation as they have made their products smaller while increasing their prices at the same time! :)
When I was in China, I ate every morning in KFC before going to school. And the food I ordered was almost totally Chinese: century year old egg congee, hot soybean milk, fried egg, then a western salade.
In the US chain restaurants now suffer from lack of competition and greed. Abroad they have to compete with local restaurants and actually provide value to their customers.
The Asian market loves fried chicken. I haven’t seen any of my cousin’s gathering without some kind of fried chicken, be it Jollibees or KFC or some other brand.
I find this ironic because when I lived in South Korea, their local chicken restaurants were so abundant and great in quality that KFC had almost died out. In one town in any Korean city there would have been 10-20 fried mom & pop fried chicken shops for every 1 KFC. I guess fried chicken wasn't as popular in China until KFC stepped in.
The real reason KFC is more popular in Asia is that the food they serve there is actually fresh and tasty. Completely the opposite of the microwaved soggy garbage they sell in the US. We would love to love KFC in America, but they think we’re too stupid to know the difference
no surprise, fastfood in a lot of other countries, especially in Asian are miles different than in the US. In the US, they are fastfood place, when you want quick, fast, and "cheap" food to fill your stomach, over there, they're restaurant grade. They have menu catering to local taste and culture, sweet and spicy fried chicken and black bean sauce fried chicken taste so good with great umami
Thanks u jfc.. someone gets it. Fast food in America is suppose to fast cheap done. It’s not gormet.. but even still, fast food and brands have become less popular because of prices and people are eating better and supporting local shops more because it’s almost the same prices.. so why eat kfc when u can get a chicken burger fresh good quality at a local for less/same price? Alot of comments don’t get this. McDonald’s, kfc, etc are like the last things u wanna eat and it’s not even worth it these days. N plus, China doesn’t even know about in and out and chick fila😂😂😂😂 that’s the new “fast gormet” food in the west.
All these fast food restaurants are serving real food outside of the US. It's just not the same store, they just share the same names. To those who think they should do better in the US. It's impossible where they stand now, it's just different economy they represent. McDonald and KFC are not your typical minimum wage food in places like China, they're pretty expensive compare to local cheapest places. I have visited China many times pre-pandemic, the pricing of the food is more like your typical higher end of middle class food. If i have to place a figure, i would say it's about equivalence of $50-$75 per person. Please note this is not based on currency exchange, I'm referring to purchase power in relationship to how much people make and food cost. It's pure estimation based on my experience, actual experience may be varies due to location and personal perception of this matter.
Yea I do agree. People in the fast food industry in Australia just don't really care what they sell to customers. Either too greasy, or cold or undercooked, everytime I go I get some surprise. But actually even cheap street food in China is not bad at all.
Equivalent to 50-75 dollars is bs. Average person spends ~30-50 kuai (maybe a little off) at McDonald’s pre pandemic. A quick pasta at wagas is ~70-80 kuai. I would say you can get the same pasta in US ~20-25 dollars so you do the math. But of course there are cheap food in china that costs you ~10-20 for lunch. Food is in general more affordable in china than US excluding fine dining
Well, KFC is not the cheapest food in China. KFC in China before very high now very moderate, a meal is also twenty or thirty yuan. The Chinese don't think it's too expensive but it's not cheap either.
My local KFS doesn't seem to do really good. There were 2 of them near by, and both locations seem deserted. This is all at the same time our local Chick-fil-a, Popeyes, and the Old M all are doing really well. What's more, I was in Salt Lake City a couple of time this year, and I visited the original KFS store there. It's a beautiful place, but you know what. The place is basically empty. In evening in summer, we went there at dinner hours, and we had the whole place by ourselves. And more recently, I was in SLC again, and I went there to order something to go with my son. Again, there dinning area is empty, no one by us. The place can easily seat a couple of hundred people, but all empty. Sure they got some drive throughs, but you can see its not doing really well.
Exactly I went to a branch in Shanghai and they were pouring some kind of black, thick, filthy liquid (dirty oil) down a drainage right in front of my eyes. Next they proceeded to give me cold fries, I got the bubble guts after eating. I'm so surprised by all this praise for kfc China.
I'm a Brit who is currently living in Kuwait; I'm a maths teacher, and moved here to work. I order KFC on the KFC Kuwait app and an app called Talabat. The KFC here is officially 'KFC', but tastes noticeably different to the UK. I think the 'secret formula spices' or whatever just aren't provided to Kuwait KFC places. Like I have a KFC in the UK when I returned home for Christmas, and my friend told me this would be the last 'real KFC' I'll eat in a while. China's a big market, but Kuwait's obesity due to american fast food companies setting up shop here indicates that the Arab countries are another great market for KFC.
There are loads of American restaurant chains all across the world but not a single one from UK UK is an embarasment when it comes to restaurants US food is consumed far far more across the world than Uk food UK lives up to its reputation of having apalng food
I don't know what happened to KFC in America but I no longer go there. The chicken tastes old and hard and nearly inedible every time so I finally threw in the towel and said 'no more'! I use to LOVE this chicken and purchased it for family get-togethers and church potlucks... but sorry to say they've lost my business.
Same problem in Australia. In the 80s and 90s the chicken was succulent and delicious. Now it's often greasy and dry. I imagine they are cutting corners and perhaps the chicken itself is poorer quality.
i went to kfc in Guangzhou many years ago, the store was clean, had variety of domestic version dishes like spring rolls, egg tarts and sichuan spicy fried chicken. every month has a new menu and many chinese people i know treat kfc like a high end restaurant
It's really unfortunate that in America where KFC started, all the food is boring and the restaurants are dirty and out dated. But if you go to any country in Asia, the restaurants are clean, well kept and the menu is innovative and always changing.
Ok, gutter oil very clean. Ur making racist assumptions. Dirty.. in America they have health codes. You’re not allowed to sell gutter oil and cardboard dim sum to people.. I guys keep talking about innovation and that’s not what people want. When i was in Taiwan, I ate KFC often to make me feel like I was in the U,S again. The fried chicken there tasted diffrent from it does here slightly. Back in those days Mash poatoes and gravy was something you can't get anywhere else and you tried asking around no one knows what you are talking about. But I bet if Popeyes opened there, KFC would go out of business there. Popeyes is way better than KFC in my opinion and cheaper. I think why KFC thrives there, because fried chicken is not a new thing there. But it's hard to find a convenient place that sells it. Popcorn chicken is a staple there, but it just doesn't taste anything close to KFC.
The first time I went to a KFC in China I was shocked. They just use the brand but there’s no KFC food at all 😂 Their success comes from the transformation of the KFC food into a very different menu.
I remember ordering rice & chicken in a KFC overseas only to be told that they don't have rice. I really thought rice & chicken is a standard for KFCs all over the world.

Chinese version of KFC and Pizza hut are very different from those in US. The provide more flavors of Pizza and Chicken than in US and also have all kinds of stakes and all kinks of noodles.
I went to China after much North American KFC. The difference in quality was astounding. The chicken is so juicy and flavoured. The amount of herbs actually in the Chinese chicken blew NA out of the water. This was common for all of the international restaurant chains.
It's not just China that loves kfc, it's every asian country. Especially Japan where it's considered a Christmas tradition to have kfc during the holidays. I don't know why this report is only focused on China when kfc is everywhere in asia.

One of my dad's friends owns 10% of one ...decently sized city's KFC company's stock, since their dad worked for that city's KFC branch in a somewhat major position. It works all on a local basis (each city has its own branch and company if i remember correctly) and there's a lot of struggle setting it up (a lot of bureaucracy and corruption opportunities for a foreign company needing governmental approval to expand, including bargaining with the local alcohol and tobacco commitees for some reason). Still, it is at where it is now, after a lot of hard work and networking
When i lived in Thailand ,KFC seemed popular there also .They have spicey versions to cater for the local taste .They were well priced so locals could afford where as Burger king there seemed over priced and were depending mainly on Tourists .McDonalds are also popular in Thailand .

10 years ago maybe but today it is not considered expensive food anymore

I find this ironic because when I lived in South Korea, their local chicken restaurants were so abundant and great in quality that KFC had almost died out.

I'm a Brit who is currently living in Kuwait; I'm a maths teacher, and moved here to work. I order KFC on the KFC Kuwait app and an app called Talabat. Like I have a KFC in the UK when I returned home for Christmas, and my friend told me this would be the last 'real KFC' I'll eat in a while. China's a big market, but Kuwait's obesity due to american fast food companies setting up shop here indicates that the Arab countries are another great market for KFC.

Same problem in Australia. In the 80s and 90s the chicken was succulent and delicious. Now it's often greasy and dry. I imagine they are cutting corners and perhaps the chicken itself is poorer quality.

We thought it was horrendous compared to KFC where we live lol Mcds and BK held up but the KFC we had in Shanghai was not good at all...... The Pizzahut breakfast we had at the airport good though hahahaha
I was in Shanghai in 1996. And the streets and walls on buildings were lined with KFC banners and posters everywhere. I can only imagine how many there are there now.
The food in KFC China is just so much better, it has a new thing every month
I mean its better than fried Dog or cat...
When i lived in Thailand ,KFC seemed popular there also .They have spicey versions to cater for the local taste .They were well priced so locals could afford where as Burger king there seemed over priced and were depending mainly on Tourists .McDonalds are also popular in Thailand .
I’m still here and KFC is thriving!
我觉得中国的汉堡王味道很一般,我们会更愿意吃本地的品牌汉堡
I’ve been living in Thailand since 2012. I have watched KFC grow here! Not only that, KFC here is so MUCH better than in the U.S. Matter of fact, let me head to the mall and pick up a 2 piece right quick!
I swear to god I've never heard Yum! all my life, now it's all in my ears.
"Crazy Thursday!" "V me 50". Almost everyone in China especially young people know this. It is a successful online brand marketing example. Every Thursday, there are lots of memes or jokes about KFC Crazy Thursday compaign spreading across online groups in China.
Success of KFC in China can literally be a textbook case for marketing courses

I had KFC in Thailand. Absolutely incredible.
remember this, the KFC in China is a whole different thing compare to the NA ones. The only thing in common is the logo itself.
