Don Revie with his constant chopping and changing of the team was quite rightly heavily criticised but he lost his entire first choice central midfield within about six months of each other when first Colin Bell and then Gerry Francis suffered long term injuries, Bell's effectively career ending. About a month after this game, Francis suffered the back injury in a World Cup qualifier in Finland that ended his international career. He eventually came back at club level but was never the same player. What might have been in those 1978 WC qualifiers had those two been available.
As an 11 year old in 1976, this game sticks out in my memory, I thought to myself "Americans don't play FOOTBALL?" ... well it was ex internationals and Tommy Smith played, plus lower league players from england playing in the North American "soccer"? League, that ended in 1984. No live tv then .. just updates on the radio and recorded highlights on ITV in the evening and that yellow England kit?... To end the American MEN have come a long way in their FOOTBALL progression and their WOMEN are The BEST!.
As a Jock I always found Brian Moore a very even handed, unbiased commentator, especially in the Home Internationals competition, he never let the fact he was English influence his commentary when the Home Nations played each other , a total professional through and through.
This Football Match was not Officially Recognised by F.I.F.A. from my point of view, I can only assume the reasons for non -recognition were two points ; 1, At that time, the USA did not have an Official International Football Team. 2, Within Team America differing non - american players had previously played for their own International Football Teams.
Didn't have an official international football team? Of course they had one, they were just of a very poor standard back then, hence the 'Team America' basically the best of the NASL as they thought they would give three former World Cup winners more of a game. USA got knocked out in the preliminary qualifying tournament in 1973 for the CONCACAF region for the 1974 World Cup.
I remember watching this as a 10 year old just because Pele was playing and thinking that Team America were the best team in the world, but in fact watching them here, they were quite rubbish.
All things considered, as it turned out it probably might have been better if he'd stayed at Leeds and had another crack at the European Cup. The team would have needed rebuilding though as that team all got old together although as it transpired it was still good enough to get to the European Cup final that season. When you get the opportunity of taking the biggest job in your profession though, you rarely turn it down.
@@johnt7630 Yes, didn't qualify but looking at the teams they lost out to, they were very good teams. Poland, 3rd place in the '74 WC ( a poor waterlogged pitch away from making the final?), Czechoslovakia, winners of the '76 Euros and Italy 4th place at the '78 WC (and a good percentage of that team won it four years later) so bad luck in the qualifying draws. The non seeding for the 1978 WC and facing Italy was primarily due to failing to qualify for the previous two finals.
They didn't qualify in 74 or 78 ,which was absolutely astonishing considering the talent they had available then, quite remarkable . Scotland beat the Czechs to qualify in 74 . Unbelievable now to think , but when you look at the team we had most were playing at the highest level for top English sides Law Jordan , Dalglish Harvey ,Lorimer ,Bremner etc. Dalglish was still at Celtic who at that time were still a formidable side in terms of Europe in those days .
@John C They also wore yellow/blue/yellow on that 1973 summer tour against Czechoslovakia prior to the Poland game and against Italy in Turin a week after the Poland game. They wore it three times and didn't win once in it.
Not sure if it would have been double figures but you'd have expected England to have been disappointed if they hadn't hit six or seven. In those days the USA team never used to make it out of the pre-qualification tournament for CONCACAF for the World Cup i.e. the qualifying tournament for the final qualifying tournament.
@@djelalniyazi4090 In the 1970 World Cup England had an all sky blue kit which was the official change kit, the red/white/red they wore against West Germany in the QF was a third kit rather than the change kit it usually was.
What a great little player Gerry Francis was in the mid-70s. Shame injuries ended his international career early.

David Cummings Probably Revie's idea that if England resembled his beloved Leeds United with that all yellow kit then they couldn't fail to win!
I remember this well, brings back memories. Thanks for putting this up.
THAT ENGLAND KIT MUST BE WORTH A FORTUNE ITS SO RARE.
Great to hear Brian Moore commentating.

I remember the England kit. Really nice and simple. They must find a copy and display it at the England team museum at Wembley (if there is one).
NEVER EVEN KNEW THIS GAME EXISTED.
I love the 'holiday in Ireland' advertising board!
I didn't even know this game existed.
Brotherhood of Man advertising hording in the background.

@@martinkelly6709 Yes good point .. Its great to see The World Game of FOOTBALL grow and prosper in North America!.
@David Cummings what a shock that it wasnt an official game 😫😫considering it involved a MADE UP team for the day 🤔
@@alancampbell3364 Yep!
So the USA celebrates 200 years of independence...by getting spanked by England!
I don't know if you'd call that irony or poetic justice!

A MASSIVE CROWD TOO

england played really well

what shirt is england wearing , looks like collered
It's a round necked plain yellow Admiral shirt.
England really had classy players then. But somehow did not win a major international competition.
Did not win ! They couldn't even qualify !

Was Team America a side made up of MLS players of which Pele playing for New York Comos? I never knew England played in a yellow kit ever
