Liverpool 4-2 Ipswich 1973-74 (Keegan hat-trick)

  • This was Kevin Keegan's first and (perhaps surprisingly) only hat-trick while playing for Liverpool. Bobby Robson meanwhile was starting to turn Ipswich into a force in English football. But their record against Liverpool was poor - the Tractor Boys had won just one of their last 15 meetings with the Reds and had never triumphed at Anfield. Gerald Sinstadt watched the action.

The late tackle by Highway on Mills at 1:40...ha ha. Mills just gets up and Highway says alright mate. Today the player would be rolling around and his team mates surrounding the Ref..oh how times have changed.

Recollect coming up from Ipswich as a kid with my Dad - first away game - getting off the train at Lime Street Station and then dragooned onto a rammed full bus to Anfield. For some reason I can still hear remember seagulls squawking in the split second of silence before the pre-match ynwa.
Keegan - Liverpools first great no.7 . My team weren't too bad back then either.

This is football in a time where players were honest, tough and respected each other and officials. No rolling around or going down with just a touch. It seems the more money that’s gone into the game makes the sport weaker and more dishonest. Oh for the simpler times!

I don't know how those guy wore those crotch hugger shorts. I remember when I played in high school in the early 90's the junior varsity squad got the old varsity kits from the early 80's and the shorts were like that. We wore them for one game and all had massive wedgies the whole game and scrapped them and all bought our own shorts.
