Like ST, even if the main characters live, bad stuff happens to them and not all issues are resolved. In this case, the zoo still exists and there are no plans to ever disband it. If anything the new exhibit (reality tv) will probably make things worse for the live exhibits. It’s arguably one of the best ways to be social conscious in media. No crew member ever felt _completely_ above one another despite rank and that allowed every word said some merit. It’s something only Star Trek managed to combine with a sense of wonder and adventure. I miss that feeling.
I'm not a big fan of Seth MacFarlane, but this is what Star Trek Discovery should have been more like. Instead of that tiresome single season story arc and that ridiculous spore drive nonsense.
This was already done on Star Trek. The pilot episode of the original series called "The Cage" Capt. Christopher Pike is taken captive and put into a cage for a zoo-like exhibit. There's also a Twilight Zone episode where this thing happens.

If Discovery had been like this people would have complained that they weren't doing anything new, just recycling old Star Trek plots. well that and most zoo nowadays have more happy enclosures for the animals and the animals actually get to bond with the keepers so much less like a prison.
It's a real conundrum. Animals should be in their natural environment, but human encroachment has pushed many species to the brink of extinction. Zoos may be the only place they can survive, at least for now.
Jacqueline Morici Issac's species has a very tentative relationship with the Union, based more on curiosity than cooperation. That's the main reason Issac is part of the crew, to further diplomatic relations with the Union, but for Issac's people it's so they can have a better understanding of organic lifeforms. Going to war with the Calabans to rescue a few hundred or even a few thousand captured organics doesn't really do them any favors, and actually just pisses off the only organic species they see as an equal. I wouldn't be surprised if Issac's people did the same thing. The only reason they don't is because they prefer a more scientific approach, observing organics in their "natural state".
TheDoctor2nd observation of a great war of that level may also interest them. What would the most advanced species react to a betrayal or the idea of war? Would they break down, would they underestimate their apponents, would they surrender? No one knows. For all we know after the current villains they may use these guys as the next arc.
Carter Studying a war could be interesting, but for the Calabans it wouldn't be war, more akin to extermination. Think of it less as Klingons vs Starfleet and more the humans in Rise of the Planet of the Apes. To the Calabans we would be the intelligent apes; smarter than normal sure, but still not seen as equal or even as truly sentient. It would have been pretty easy for us to wipe out the apes had the Simian Flu not decimated the planet. Watching something like that doesn't appeal to Issac's people.
This is the kind of situation where you visit vengeance upon these people when you get your freedom. Also illustrates the more basic point that "rights" are always defined by those who have the capacity for violence. And if you don't have that, you can't get the rights you feel you deserve.
Humans are not the or a higher species. No species is higher or lower than any other. There's no possible metric for such a thing. Insects, Arachnids, Fish, Mammals, Reptiles, Birds, Crustaceans, all creatures think and feel as research shows, as it also shows all living beings have subjective experience and the same capability for consciousness we have (can only measure capability, we can't prove consciousness in ourselves, other humans, or other creatures, so capability is the term used). Even if no creature thought or felt, they are still living organisms as is all life and should be treated with Love, care and respect, as with all Life too. Use harmless repellents to avoid and prevent infestations and gently and carefully move them from your home if they are there. Ironically harmless repellents are also the most effective method and when the proper repellent is used (usually Plants or Oils) and is properly harmless, then it is exactly that.
As a kid, I had a book with a very similar story. Only it took place on a ship flown by a hunter collecting for the zoo. The main character was a human teen who was captured.
That moment when a parody of Star Trek has more respect for it and had become better than the current "Star Trek" that is simply an insult to the fans.
hmmm Dominic Keating (Malcolm from Enterprise) for a new season as the replacement captain. Everyone loves him. He's stern, he's suave, he's British. Seth faces off against him. " you don't even know our crews names for christ sake... What's his?" *points to a random guy* "It's crewman Vasquez, hows the knee?" "great Sir, Sue sends her regards sir" Oh that's lovely, send her mine." Mcfarlane looks dumbfounded. "I mean you're too close to the crew..." "I'd order them to their death if it saved the ship" "I .... I just don't like you" Mercer is sent to the ships councillor for evaluation. Thankfully the ships councillor offers advice such as "take a bath with Lavender. It will really help you unwind" so Mercer goes on a witch hunt against Keating. "He's the perfect officer. Drinks black coffee. Smiles and talks to everyone. Ohhh he talks to everyone. He thinks I'm crazy. Heh. Crazy? We'll show him Issac... Issac?" Dominic is infact an alien using the Orville. But the joke is everyone misses him not Mercer by the end. He retakes the chair and point's to an officer "you.... Take us...out there..." The officer cringes and mutters "it's Vasquez.."
Except animals aren't just "technologically inferior" to humans, they're fundamentally "inferior" in the sense that they lack human's concept-formation faculty - for animals it's sensation and perception. Only Man has the capacity for conception. Putting animals in zoos is not the same as putting sentient people in zoos. What's being shown here is much more akin to simple imprisonment or slavery - were one, more advanced, group of people captures a more primitive group of people. I mean, I know what they where going for here, some sort of animal rights message, fair enough, but it falls on it's face in execution here the more you think about it. It would have been closer to animals in a zoo if the species outside the cages were radically more advanced then the humans/aliens - something so far beyond us we can't even comprehend their level of consciousness.
When we think about how humans put other humans in zoos, this show does kind of miss the point. It would have been better if the aliens played up their own superiority in their minds, since a truly advanced race would have no need for zoos in the first place
Mighty Minority or maybe, we are in zoos now but we are just to inferior perceive that we are. Basically another for of the “we are in a simulation” theory.
Mighty Minority Who’s missing the point here? The aliens here are not superior, they think they are so they ravel into imprisonments of other species. We don’t need zoos anymore, we are sufficiently advanced so we can admire animals in their habitats through documentaries and films. Yet here we are.

It's kind of been done to death I think. Besides, nobody wants to be reminded of "Jurassic World 2."
Brian Griffin: Now, Peter, this habitat provides all of your needs. Stop looking so grumpy. You, Lois and Stewie are upsetting my paying guests.
inspired episode. this is where i knew orville will be truly awesome.
If someone locked me in a cage like that I would be trying to make those little kids cry
HEY WE ARE NOT YOUR SHAMU!!😤😤
I can't wait for the next season of The Orville I like it better than Star Trek
Best part of this episode was it had 2 cast members of my favorite comedy sitcom of all time in it although they didn't interact in the episode.
"Hey, what's going on!" Meanwhile, it's almost instantly obvious that he's in an alien zoo.
This premise was in a twilight zone episode.
How come the two medium sized humans gets a living room and a bed room but the huge bigfoot creature has barely enough room to swat and take a dump?
It reminds me of the episode of the twilight zone.
What a Great show ! I sure do miss it.
This is Star Trek for the new kids lol and I like it.
Rick and Morty found a way out of this scenario
You can tell their species is more intelligent because they have bigger heads.
I crush hard on MacSeth. I love his sense of humor.
Why should we give an ef about your middle school crushes? Just keep it to yourself please.
Same
This scenario is straight out of that Twilight Zone episode in which a human astronaut is kept in a zoo on some other planet.
I loved how they just gave them keeping up with the Kardashian and they were hooked xD
You mean cardassians
Reminds me a bit of the end of 2001 except David spent the rest of his life there and didn't know it was a zoo.
The spiky face alien sound like Saul Goodman from breaking bad.
This reminds me of the quarantine
This reminds me of a old Twilight Zone series.
It is Twilight Zone Idea ... 😀
This actually a really good episode.
what episode is this?
They need to Do more of this
Oh No! They got Pinhead too!
As a kid, I had a book with a very similar story. Only it took place on a ship flown by a hunter collecting for the zoo. The main character was a human teen who was captured.
I dismissed this show in it's beginning. Meh. Satire. .. Just watched an episode from season 2. WTF! I was wrong! This is very good.
I felt the same in the beginning
"Looks like they finally filled that slot" kills me 🤣
To me the rave scene is the best in my opinion!
They even do the "simple summary metaphor" after saying sciencey stuff
Honestly, these aliens would have been the basis for a (short-lived) Krill alliance had this been STD.
WE'LL TEAR YOUR SOUL APART
Love this Show!
That moment when a parody of Star Trek has more respect for it and had become better than the current "Star Trek" that is simply an insult to the fans.
We need something like this for Dr Who
But hen humanity genocides them we are the bad guys.
Oh, he's the big guy to your left. You can't see him from where you are.
Did anyone notice the creature next to them looks a lot like ludo.
I honestly hope the The Orville comes back to this planet and Liberate every single species in the future season.
With their new allies they might just have the firepower.
The bioship aproach is the best moment
I like how when they get out they dont try to help anyone else they just gtfo of the big red heads galaxy
Tbh I never knew that Seth was a fan of Star trek or even Star wars.
0:47 pinheads brother
We are not your Shamu.!!!! LOL!
SO SHWEEEETTT...much love Tee with LIONS NAMED LEO.[the music worldwide}
*Season 3 Spoilers*
Now that the Kalon are on the Federation's side, they could storm the zoo and free everyone.
I like how he does episodes from TOS. With a twist. This is like The Pilot episode.
It would be wise not to mess with species that is capable to enslave Pinhead
Between star trek discovery and this,.... I'm pretty much set.
3:15 oh well, we better start... breeding then 😏
This looks much, much, MUCH more interesting than that Star Trek Discovery CRAP!
New Hire training at Home Depot
you see Ackor over there?
He's been here THIRTY YEARS
Well, the talking detainees here are potential ambassadors for their species to join the Union, I would wager.
Orville was one of the few shows I watched but of course, it got the Ax!
"oh look; LOOK; the humans are mating!"
Wish it was 10 seasons
Maybe it get there =P
I don’t think so 😕
hmmm Dominic Keating (Malcolm from Enterprise) for a new season as the replacement captain. Everyone loves him. He's stern, he's suave, he's British. Seth faces off against him. " you don't even know our crews names for christ sake... What's his?" *points to a random guy*
"It's crewman Vasquez, hows the knee?"
"great Sir, Sue sends her regards sir"
Oh that's lovely, send her mine."
Mcfarlane looks dumbfounded.
"I mean you're too close to the crew..."
"I'd order them to their death if it saved the ship"
"I .... I just don't like you"
Mercer is sent to the ships councillor for evaluation. Take us...out there..."
The officer cringes and mutters "it's Vasquez.."
It would have been better if the aliens played up their own superiority in their minds, since a truly advanced race would have no need for zoos in the first place
yeah, the comparison is a bit forced.
Mighty Minority or maybe, we are in zoos now but we are just to inferior perceive that we are. Basically another for of the “we are in a simulation” theory.
@@blacklite911 possible. Just as long as i don't feel like I'm in a zoo, the simulation theory is good with me
Mighty Minority Who’s missing the point here?
The aliens here are not superior, they think they are so they ravel into imprisonments of other species.
We don’t need zoos anymore, we are sufficiently advanced so we can admire animals in their habitats through documentaries and films. Yet here we are.
This feels like something I'd launch a crusade against.
This episode was influenced by an episode from The Twighlight Zone
Was just thinking about that one.
People are the same everywhere
The best scene is the one where the Orville is trying to negotiate the alliance with matriach race and Bortus says "They are awful."
Oh, how original. Seems like I saw this on TOST back in the 1960s.
