    Erythritol hit the news in a big way this week with claims that a study showed a risk for increased "major adverse cardiac events". Today, I will break down a little bit of the limitations of this study.
    I love people question things, I love studies being done to look for the pros and cons of things. The trouble can sometimes arrive when results are misrepresented by anyone in the the chain of information. That misrepresentation can be from researchers, publishers, the news, advocacy/political groups or even doctors and patients. It's important to not twist research into saying something it doesn't say.

    In the fifties and early sixtys doctors would appear on television saying smoking is good for you.

      I haven’t seen the commercials for that but would 100% believe it.
      Which is why I’m not saying I can prove erythitol is perfect at all, I’m saying this study is mediocre and doesn’t prove cause/effect. Maybe we’ll get a higher quality study soon (likely given the high media response)

    Good job Dr Bland at breaking down this bogus study. The fact they did not assess dietary intake tells all!

    Is there a correlation deserving of study into causation with any other recent medical procedures, and increased heart attacks in the last few years?

      @DrScottBland  Рік тому +1

      I generally think correlations are worth studying, trick is finding the money. Even well intended things can sometimes not end up a win. For instance it was almost a given for a long time that everyone over a certain age got aspirin and that is changing

    I'm generally a fan of trying to stick to whole natural foods when possible (admitting my current addiction to diet sodas that I'm working on). Does this study make you want to change your eating habits?

      @naborsimbor5752 I understand, if I was going to have a treat and noticed it had erythritol, this study wouldn't keep me from eating it. Maybe someday they will find something more solid on a data front

      @@DrScottBland could you please tell me.What kind of sugar do you use?

      @@nazmiezyferi554 I don’t do a ton of cooking so I don’t generally add sugar to almost anything. When I drink iced tea I tend to do unsweet. But I drink way more diet soda than I should which has aspartame and I will often buy “keto” snacks which is a genre thst uses a lot of erythritol.

      @@DrScottBland Do you find any benefits coming from the phenylalanine that you end up getting through the aspartame in the diet sodas?
