I came across your videos restoring your 65 VW Beetle. I worked at a VW dealership body shop straight out of high school in 1972 for eight years. The Beetle is the easiest car to work on and repair than any other car out there in my opinion. Although the rocker boxes are always a pain to work on the rest of the car is a piece of cake relatively speaking. I did full collision work for 15 years, a very rewarding experience returning a car to, in some cases, better than new.
Watching the work you are doing tells me you are very knowledgeable in body repair. Welding, prepping for panel replacement etc. But one item of note I observed is a painter you are not. Watching you spray on primer is a haphazard way of applying paint of any type, primer lacquer, enamel, urethane no matter what you’re spraying it on.
No matter what you’re spraying on you always spray in straight passes or strokes then return back spraying above or below the prior pass at a 50% overlap. Spraying the primer as you did does not leave a uniform coat whether wet or dry and gives no guarantee the part you’re painting is even covered enough. But I will say spraying primer on that way is one thing but definitely not the way to spray your color top coat on the outside. Spraying as I noted is a must if you want a beautiful final finish. I’m not writing to criticize your work by any means but to offer the standard and established method of spray painting whether from a spray gun or spray can.
You are correct, what you’re doing is a lot of work and beats you up, at least when we get older. I restored a 66 Mustang ground up as you are doing with your VW Beetle that took me a full year starting back in the summer of 1980. So I understand where you are coming from and truly appreciate what you are doing and applaud you for it. I’m sure your efforts will look beautiful when finished. I would hate to see you with problems after because of the painting application method used. Otherwise keep up the great work! I’m enjoying watch the progress you’re making.

All right! Back to the bug! I had great success at "fauxtina" using Rustoleum paint on rusty metal primer and a roller brush. Roll it on and let it dry a couple of days, then mist it with a few coats of Rustoleum spray paint like you've used here. Once dry, sand lightly. The bumpy primer under the paint will be revealed convincingly.

Er, just one question: instead of this abundant use of seam sealer on those pinholes, how about putting on pieces of fiberglass tissue? You can stick them onto the metal with an epoxy resin that comes with the fiberglass. Once put there, this fiberglass stuff stays there forever.
All the best & good luck.

To better distribute the body sealant with your finger, it makes sense to first dip your finger in a mixture of water and a little dishwashing detergent. This doesn't work for all sealants, but it works for most. It is worth to give it a try.

If you sell it you will see the benefits of your hard work pay off. Plus have money for more projects as im finding out now. When selling have to have patience and just leave it advertised till the right person comes along in some cases. I stick with my asking price and don't lower it. Just wait till the person who really wants it shows up. They will pay it with cash in hand.😊

The older VWs used crescent shaped PVC covered foam packs to seal that area each side in the engine bay below the rear window. With the later VWs they sprayed Polyurethane foam in that area instead. This was probably cheaper and better sound insulated but the, rigid foam held moisture and caused the panel behind the rear window to rust out.

I think you are supposed to strip that shipping paint completely. But I could be wrong. If so use paint stripper. That stuff vagabonders uses is good

You do not spray foam in the cavity after you put in the wire harness, you install the harness and leave it alone, it does not need to be sealed.

That seam sealer seems defective and dry. ive never seen any seam sealer lay in that dry thick consistency in all of my years in autobody, it should come out more creamy and you should be able to spread it with a brush

Man. A Ghia or a common bug? 🤔. I know which one I would prioritize.

You should have used brush on seam sealer. You waited too long to spread out what you put on the seams.
