+Niceguy3210 And on the other hand there is the Call of Duty franchise. Bullshit since many years and the games are all done under strikt order and by people who made games before. They should try letting random people on it I mean it can only become better.
+GIR THE TOCO KING it would have been amazing if he was featured in brawl due to the final smashes I always thought his final smash would be he do his gunbarrel sequence and shoot the person
reloading weapons by unplugging and replugging the rumble pak? Thank god it never happened and got shut down by Nintendo. Imagine doing Aztek on 00A with this.
+SonnytheArcticFox i'm pretty sure even if they did impliment the feature, it would only be an optional add-on since not everybody had a rumble pack. Going out and buying a rumble pack to reload in a game seems silly.
Yeah, this is not a very in-depth thing about the game itself, but more about the development of it. The amount of leftovers and unused stuff in this game is staggering! I remember there was this website called Detstar or something, that dude had an insane collection of GameShark codes to see all kinds of stuff that remained unused in the game, that was before the Goldeneye Setup Editor came to be, so there was no way to take a closer look at the inner workings of the game. I still remember when the Citadel unearthed for the first time, it was HUGE!
Yes. Also we had a fun mode we called hostage negotiation, where one person would put remote mines everywhere with an unarmed hostage, unarmed negotiator and a sniper running around outside.
Pablo Perugino That's the reason why they revoked it, imagine the QA testing on that.. people going into a corridor having to reload fast, smashing the rumble pack in the controller over and over again... oops RIP controller.
That would have become unbearably tedious incredibly fast. A dedicated addon that could replicate the tactile sensations of reloading (think spring mechanisms for a large magazine button that resembles the look and feel of one) for shooter games would be a lot smoother. Basically a "rumble pack 2.0". Even then, I don't know how long it would take for that to become monotonous or arbitrarily raise the difficulty during "heat of the moment" scenarios causing the player to lose. Oh well.
Good times... I remember the day it dropped. We were deep into Mario Kart 64, playing everyday and night, burning it down. My dude stole Goldeneye from his job straight out the shipping box, right off the truck. We plunged Bond in that night and lost our minds. The multiplayer was the best thing ever. Some of the best gaming of my life. Damn, RIP Lamarr... We'll get back on them sticks when I get there my dude.
Sorry about your friend. Memories are all we have, but when they're rich, they're RICH. Cherish those and know that finding peace is a journey that doesn't end, which is OK as that means that the peace you find increases.
Multiplayer was an afterthought that only took six weeks to develop?! GE007's multiplayer is the reason why I got into multiplayer FPS games! Bravo to the dev team on such an accomplishment.
"Weren't held back by traditional [...] mentalities" I think this is everyone's fantasy at one point, being so new to a craft that they bring fresh new ideas and pop out a hit.
"the multiplayer was an after-thought and was put together in the game's last six weeks of development" I am a die hard GE player and do no believe that. Maybe the developers weren't very assuming in the MP's success, but I remember reading magazines months and months before GE's release talking about how great the MP would be. I was stoked!... And looking back I'd say that six weeks would earn them a spot next to Moses and Jesus.
Had such a great time playing this game. The aspect that i liked a lot was going for the secrets in the game. Nothing better than unlocking Paintball mode, or Big Head mode. The only game that came close to this game during that era was Perfect Dark. I also miss having the split screen multiplayer. Ironically, i feel it was more fun. Didn't have to worry about lag, or getting people together. If they were at your house, then they were playing the game. Hopefully i didn't ramble too much, but this was a great game at the time and brings back good memories.
Much as a Goldeneye fanboy as I am I will be the first to concede that it has not aged well at all. Its multiplayer and its gameplay have long since been surpassed. Back in the mid 90s though...holy shit. It was groundbreaking.
If only one could play this online with the 60fps emulator with people in my area so no lag. Tried it once online but played with guys from US and had like 200-250 in ping LOL
I remember using the gameshark on the dam level to try and cross the lake to the other side where you can see this bunker with a huge machine gun shooting you.
it was supposed to be a real place you could visit, but to optimize the game they made it so only small sections of the world would render. this broke the behavior when crossing the lake on the boat, so they removed it.
Actually Goldeneye was extremely revolutionary, not only that, but without Goldeneye you wouldn't be able to play with sniper rifles. Goldeneye was the first FPS to use zoomable sniper rifles, the first FPS with multiplayer. You wouldn't HAVE Black Ops 2 or any other Multiplayer FPS without the rounding success of Goldeneye.
About the ZX spectrum emulator, it was later used in Donkey Kong 64. After getting 15 banana medals, you could play the ZX spectrum game Jetpac in Cranky's lab.
That's because the techniques improved. Connery and Moore had to do their own stunts (or at least their stunt double) because they were in 60's and 70's movies, they didn't have much special effects that were really relyable.
Teamflare Grunt I totally missed your comment before. I kind of forgot about Daniel Craig and how awesome his movies are. I for some reason wasn't thinking of them as Bond movies.
+Garnet Bezanson I liked him. It would have been interesting if he had stayed on to star in Goldeneye, but he left because he thought they were taking too long to make another Bond movie, and the end of the Cold War made a lot of people doubtful if the franchise could revive. The only Bond I don't care for is Lazenby. It's probably because I thought the sole movie he was in was boring and had a silly plot even by Bond standards, but I can't imagine him playing particularly good in any other Bond film either.
Well I can agree that 007 golden eye is long long outdated. It did usher in the era of solid FPS gaming. Game had everything you needed. Balanced weapons, Maps, spawns, and gameplay. Even by today's standards it's hard to match this game in that respect.
blade990 today games are boring and not replayable. goldeneye had great unlocks (cheats) that kept you playing and playing. todays unlocks are some silly skins. it sucks
I don't know about that, amigo...I've replayed all the fallout and elder scrolls games at least 10 times each to the tune of 1000s of hours...far surpassing any hours I had in Goldeneye. But if we're talking strictly level based FPS' then sure Goldeneye had the formula down pretty good. Cheats, level timers, saved personal bests and unlocks are always nice.
So, to recap: The development of this game was made up of complete noobs who were not given any direction or boundaries and made designs and tried ideas almost at random, seeming to approach the project with nothing but bold - headed stubbornness being their drive, all with the stability of a wafer boat in a hurricane on the ocean. And yet this game succeeded in every way imaginable. HOW? "ANARCHY DOESN'T *WIIIIN!*"
+RarefoilB It's not that hard to imagine, just think about right now, Every shooter is trying to be CoD, so all shooters end up being the same because they are made by the same people who all think the same way. Now if you throw someone that has never heard/seen/played CoD and tell them to make a shooter, something really beautiful might come out, as long as those people have a little bit of guidance than who knows what they could make. Same thing with MMOs and WoW, they all try to be WoW and all fail at being WoW and end up just being lesser versions of WoW, why play a lesser version when you can just play the original you know.
No one ever bloody mentions the creators of this game went on to make a DIFFERENT sequel later on after they left Rare. Timesplitters is made by the same guys and has a lot of the same gameplay elements. The health and armor bars, fancy 'watch' in the third game, large levels, great 4 player multiplayer. This game may have started their fun FPS creation but it's not the best, how can I say that? Well in Timesplitters Future Perfect's multiplayer you can have play as a laser gun wielding cowboy...skeleton, or a hillbilly cactusman riding robot legs or crazier.....there's more serious characters of course but you know...hillbilly cactus. Fun single player that can be played co-op, multiplayer with all sorts of game modes. Golden Eye may be the start but dammit they made better and it's barely freaking known because everyone can't take their eyes off their first project. Does everyone love the arcade Donkey Kong more than games like Mario 3 or Sonic 1 vs Sonic 3? :|
I love timesplitters. The multiplayer is so fucking fun. Way more fun than this game. It was fun playing multiplayer with my brothers. I love the female characters because thats when i was in puberty.
Jon Prz It's an awesome game, 007 was too no doubt but I wish more people gave TS a shot since it's the same bloody game but ...well better overall haha. Fair enough, I always played as Corporal Hart the one with the cybernetic arm.
gebbar sandoval It is, and it's greatly overlooked by nostalgic maniacs. It's not the same company by name but it is the same people, it's obvious in the elements of the game, mission structure, multiplayer, health and armor functions. I wish more people knew about it, it's the same game just ....better! I mean 2 analog sticks is a huge update but everything else is just awesome on top.

Snotnarok me and my friend loved time splitters cause of our love of goldeneye!
***** Or there's long gaps between each child's birth. OR, their parents had a fuckton of children. Take your pick. I mean you could just as easily go "You have to be Mormon". :| some of them are certainly known for having 8+ children.
The pixel density is higher. I played goldeneye on my friend's 100 inch tv or something like that and it looked like doom. But when i play it on my small bubble tv it looks good.
DYKG is like the purest gaming channel. Just gives us fun with little fun facts about games while bringing new talents like BrutalMoose or Caddicarus to the table.
ever since the 007 franchise left the hands of EA, it was destined to fail. activision could never make the game feel like a 007 game. it was probably because of the overhaul to the entire movie franchise. i think 007 nightfire, and 007 agent under fire were the last great 007 games.
900bot E.A had the licence for "the world is not enough" N64,"tomorrow never dies" ps1, "Agent under fire" ps2, "nightfire" ps2, "everything or nothing" ps2, and "from russia with love" ps2. E.A lost their licence to activision after "from russia with love." every 007 game published by activision has been bland. "quantum of solice" was just a quicktime/ chase game. activision lost their licence after legends. also, their are 3 goldeneye games. the original was made by rareware, the second one i never played, the third was made by activision called Goldeneye 007 reloaded. reloaded was NOT original. if your going to make a goldeneye game, don't replace pierce brosnan with Daniel Craig, and deform the games layout.
The best FPS of all time. Almost brings tears to the eyes remembering how amazingly funny it was in multiplayer. 4friends on a little shitty tv, it was the time of our lives. Kids today will never. NEVER understand. Call of Duty and so on. Onlineplay, not the same. Splitscreen needs to come back!!!
+TheApatheistic1 "Am I the only one who thought Perfect Dark was better than Goldeneye? I mean, I love both games but Perfect Dark just seems leagues ahead of it." No, you're not. Perfect Dark is superior to Goldeneye in every way. ...that is, until Microsoft bought Rare...D~':
+macgeek2004 There's a bunch of people that think that (It kinda makes sense if you think about it, the devs had more experience, weren't tied down by the Bond world and had just made a great shooter already), I think the thing is that many more people played Goldeneye than they did Perfect Dark, Goldeneye has the caliber of Bond behind it, so many more people would recognize it and thus more probably played it, while PD was a new game with only Rares name behind it to push it, so unless the people knew about Rare or wanted to try a "new" shooter, they likely never played it.
+macgeek2004 Perfect Dark was better developed and more advanced as a game than Goldeneye, but I still like the atmosphere and levels of Goldeneye better 'cause it's Bond.
The best shooter game ever for ITS time. None will ever beat this game. I'm really sad for the kids that didn't get to play it at the time & have to play cod & all those shitty games nowadays... They will never get to know what a real good game was. Good Gaming died in the early 00's for me.
Lol... Figured you must be a kid. Those games can be good, but have nothing on 007. The only one that can get close to 007 is Banjo-Kazooie/Tooie, which is a game kinda like the ones you said. but as I said in my 1st post, best SHOOTER game for IT'S time.
Yeah, but gaming isn't dead. There are some good games out there still. Ratchet and Clank is considered a shooter. And you said gaming died in the early 00's
They died for me, but I'm sure for many people too. It just doesn't feel the same anymore. Maybe because we're older now & not kids. But I prefer the good old games, even if they don't have good graphics, but had a better gameplay & uniqueness than the ones of today. I never got to play Jak or Ratchet, but I guess I would love them since Banjo-Kazooie is my favorite game ever.
perfect dark was made by the same people who made goldeneye...they took what learned from goldeneye and perfected it with perfect dark. perfect dark was, and in my opinion still is, one of the best games of all time.
Perfect Dark is a more polished, updated, and "better" game, but Goldeneye is the one that brought a lot of new FPS conventions to consoles in the first place thus is why the game is revered as a classic.
Nowhere near the worst Bond; he was alright. George Lazenby was the worst Bond every, followed by Roger Moore. I liked him in the Saint, but he was a god awful Bond IMO.
Me, My brother, My brother girlfriend and her son use to play this game 24/7 we was complete addicted to this title. 4 player battles was unlike anything we ever seen before. damn those was some good times. I think played on people competitive nature deeply in a way unlike any game done before on a home console.
I remember watching this video when I was 11 years old, and I think I had heard of Goldeneye before, but this is what made me really want to play it. I did some chores around the house and my dad eventually bought me a cartridge from ebay, and I played it non-stop until the credits rolled. That was a really good summer. Looking back it's amazing I actually beat the game given its unusual control scheme and poor frame rate, but that's just stuff I wasn't thinking about at that age. All I knew was that I was playing a first person shooter and that it was a very important piece of game history, and that was enough to keep me glued to it. These days I prefer to play it on the 1964 emulator for a 1080p 60fps experience with keyboard and mouse controls. I actually just went back to play my cartridge on original hardware yesterday and it's so hard to get used to after playing on that emulator so much. TL;DR: This video introduced me to one of my favorite games of all time.
Even though I was born in 1983 and was gaming when Doom reached prominence here in the U.S., this is the game that got me into the first person shooter genre. When Perfect Dark finally came out I was a Junior in high school, and two friends and I skipped school that day to go buy it and the expansion pack needed to have all the games features. Ah, the good old days...
This was pretty cool. I don't recall if there has been a DYKG episode solely on a single game, rather than a series! I always love watching these, and I find it funny that I know almost everything stated in Zelda or Pokemon DYKGs, but not the others. xD Anyway, thanks for the info! Very fun!
I like how they were just like "fuck it, james bond game made by 10 people who haven't made a game before" and yet it somehow worked out brilliantly.
+Niceguy3210 And on the other hand there is the Call of Duty franchise. Bullshit since many years and the games are all done under strikt order and by people who made games before. They should try letting random people on it I mean it can only become better.

Each song is iconic and an absolute banger.

As a kid, I had no idea how good this game really was. I only thought that it was the best game I had at the time.
Reloading by jamming the Rumble Pak in over and over would eventually destroy the port, probably...
Yeah. It's a really creative idea, but no realistic.
+SolidSonicTH Not to mention it would be a royal pain in the ass.
It would also be impossible to reload if you were playing on an emulator (If you don't have an N64 Controller Adapter)
***** Yeah, but it would probably destroy the pins over time.
Probably why Nintendo shot the idea down.
And to think that Pierce Brosnan was almost a playable character in Super Smash Brothers 64. That would have been interesting.
Yes......it would have

reloading weapons by unplugging and replugging the rumble pak?

+SonnytheArcticFox Moonraker Lasers never reload, so that arguement is somewhat invalidated :P

I think that feature would have destroyed the rumble pack and the controller...

" but the idea was SHOT down by Nintendo" I see what you did there
Just discovered these DYKGaming videos and they are fascinating.
The fact that Nintendo and Rare found a way for a first person shooter to work comfortably on the N64 controller is just bonkers.
Shooters worked best on the n64. The controller already felt like a gun. The analog stick made it easier to aim at things than newer controllers.
"the multiplayer was an after-thought and was put together in the game's last six weeks of development"

RidinChevySolo
Freeza's hard to find though, but if you get to Dende you know you're close.
I still remember the day I got this game :)
I couldn't beat "Control", but my Mom beat it for me HAHA.
Your mom must be awesome.
i had to have my cousins boyfriend beat it for me. my friends parents were also really good at this game too, you both are lucky
SAME but for Jungle!
I woke up one morning and Jungle was complete and my mother just fucking grinned and said you're welcome lol
Jon Prz
It's an awesome game, 007 was too no doubt but I wish more people gave TS a shot since it's the same bloody game but ...well better overall haha.
Fair enough, I always played as Corporal Hart the one with the cybernetic arm.
Oh wow i didn't even know that time splitters was made by the same guys. That is an amazing game!
gebbar sandoval
It is, and it's greatly overlooked by nostalgic maniacs.
It's not the same company by name but it is the same people, it's obvious in the elements of the game, mission structure, multiplayer, health and armor functions.
I wish more people knew about it, it's the same game just ....better! I mean 2 analog sticks is a huge update but everything else is just awesome on top.
Snotnarok
me and my friend loved time splitters cause of our love of goldeneye!
Oh yeah well, I'll get you with Liquid Nitrogen. Ha take that Boris.
This is easily one of my top 5 favorite games still!
Plus that amazing soundtrack made it even better!
"No oddjob!"
This game was AWESOME my uncle played it when he was a kid
You must have a really young uncle then
Hey, i was a kid when i played this game, and im an uncle now, its not like every uncle is 40+
Mike DiLoreto I am a 14 year old uncle and my nephew is 15.
***** Or there's long gaps between each child's birth. OR, their parents had a fuckton of children. Take your pick. I mean you could just as easily go "You have to be Mormon". :| some of them are certainly known for having 8+ children.
I only got up to Aztec Ruins.
why does goldeneye look like a higher resolution in the gameplay in this video compared to the actual goldeneye?
They record their footage with emulators on PC, running at a much higher resolution than the N64.
This entire DYKG is just "With a game shark you can do some cool shit"
Lol, Mario 64 influencing an FPS.
Mario 64 best and most important game ever !
GameDjeenie XD
Yep
ever since the 007 franchise left the hands of EA, it was destined to fail. activision could never make the game feel like a 007 game. it was probably because of the overhaul to the entire movie franchise. i think 007 nightfire, and 007 agent under fire were the last great 007 games.
Do you guys & gals noticed that Geddan glitch footage? XD
I know right XD and I like your profile pic what is it?
oh i remember the good'ol times playing this game for hours. one of my favorite games for n64
Honestly, I cannot believe I hadn't found this channel earlier. My god, amazing.
Thats a stretch.

"Am I the only one who thought Perfect Dark was better than Goldeneye? I
mean, I love both games but Perfect Dark just seems leagues ahead of it."
No, you're not.
+Mrdie Agreed
Top 5 greatest games of all-time
ManOf1005Holds ArmBar top 3. Especially considering the time in which it came out and how revolutionary it was.
Oh man if they incorporated that unplugging rumble shock to reload would have been awesome as a kid.
I love the nostalgic feel and epic osundtrack of this gem. I wish Goldeneye: Reloaded were an HD remaster of this game.
The best shooter game ever for ITS time. None will ever beat this game. I'm really sad for the kids that didn't get to play it at the time & have to play cod & all those shitty games nowadays... They will never get to know what a real good game was. Good Gaming died in the early 00's for me.
Ratchet and clank, Jak and Daxter, and Little Big planet beg to differ
All video games? No, there is many many great games that still exist. Even shooters
Zed-X Spectrum, not Zee-X Spectrum. It’s an English computer, so use the English pronunciation (The correct one.) please.
Am I the only one who thought Perfect Dark was better than Goldeneye? I mean, I love both games but Perfect Dark just seems leagues ahead of it.
perfect dark was made by the same people who made goldeneye...they took what learned from goldeneye and perfected it with perfect dark. perfect dark was, and in my opinion still is, one of the best games of all time.
richanater99 This guy right here gets it.
Perfect Dark is just Goldeneye 2 really
Perfect Dark is a more polished, updated, and "better" game, but Goldeneye is the one that brought a lot of new FPS conventions to consoles in the first place thus is why the game is revered as a classic.
Goldeneye is better
Great.... congrats!!!! This channel is addicting!!!
This game... has not aged all that well
Just saying tf2 is awesome too... (more unique than any fps ive seen)
Timothy Dalton worst bond ever
You fucking WHAT? One of the best!
No
Nowhere near the worst Bond; he was alright. George Lazenby was the worst Bond every, followed by Roger Moore. I liked him in the Saint, but he was a god awful Bond IMO.
No and no Lazenby and Moore were great so was dalton none of them were horrible they all had there own style wich was great
Second worse. George Lazenby was worse.
Me, My brother, My brother girlfriend and her son use to play this game 24/7 we was complete addicted to this title. 4 player battles was unlike anything we ever seen before. damn those was some good times. I think played on people competitive nature deeply in a way unlike any game done before on a home console.
I remember playing this at 3 with my older brother. One of my first video games
TL;DR:
This video introduced me to one of my favorite games of all time.
Love this game! You should totally do Perfect Dark
3:10 GET DOWN *seizure attack*
Even though I was born in 1983 and was gaming when Doom reached prominence here in the U.S., this is the game that got me into the first person shooter genre. When Perfect Dark finally came out I was a Junior in high school, and two friends and I skipped school that day to go buy it and the expansion pack needed to have all the games features. Ah, the good old days...
This DYKG is one of my favourite so far!
One of the most nostalgic games I can remember. It aged horribly but is still iconic to this day
Never knew that it started as an on rails shooter. Gameplay make sense now. Cool video I love Golden Eye 007.
Man reloading the rumblepak would've been awesome
This was pretty cool. I don't recall if there has been a DYKG episode solely on a single game, rather than a series! I always love watching these, and I find it funny that I know almost everything stated in Zelda or Pokemon DYKGs, but not the others. xD
Anyway, thanks for the info! Very fun!
Goldeneye was such special game.
People who are born after it and find the remake better have no idea what this game was in 97
No game gave me the gaming experience like Goldeneye did. My brother and I were completely addicted to it. I miss those days.
