    It was Second Sight and Criterion who worked on the transfer together... Hence second sight releasing it in the UK. Second Sight have ther own in house mastering team. You over thought that one! 😉
    StudioCanal don't have any involvement.

      I did lol. It made sense for it to be Second sight. I should have dug a little deeper on that.

    I love the look of the Criterion 4K U.H.D. I think that the color temperature looks completely natural -- unlike that YELLOW version of The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.

    • @LetsTalkEntertainmentMedia
      @LetsTalkEntertainmentMedia  9 місяців тому

      The Yellow I thought was a little noticeable but not offensive. I thought the color temperature was a little to warm but your right it’s not as much of a change as the good the bad and the ugly

      @@LetsTalkEntertainmentMedia I popped my old Warner Bros. disc into my player and skipped around for a few minutes...and WOW, the old disc looks LIFELESS and FLAT and DULL. I trust that the Criterion disc is the definitive version of Mean Streets.

      @jeffcarlin5866 It is! it’s not flawless but it’s definitely better in most ways. The only thing that’s going to bother people and I’ll admit it bothered me a bit too is the color temperature change. If you can look past that then it’s an upgrade for sure.

      I also feel the color correction on this release looks softer and quite natural . If you compare it to Taxi Driver 4k, they both have a lot of night time scenes that are lit differently, with TD lit under the cityscape neon and MS lit mostly indoor with club lighting where it permeates the confined surroundings more, which greatly affects the contrast of light and shadow. MS was a small indie production compared to TD, which had a bigger crew and set up, which also affects how the scenes are lit and shot. As different to how people are use to seeing this film on prior releases, I think Martin Scorsese did his job of smoothing out the rough edges😎

    Damn me for missing the giveaway and I had to buy my copy but at 50% off from B&N! There has been much debate over the color temp, and my thought is “if this is what Marty intended it to look, then by god that’s what I’ll accept!” The first 4K release of Goodfellas is probably the worst transfer of his films, and his more recent works like Wolf of Wall Street, Hugo and The Irishman actually looks great just on HD. Raging Bull 4k was a subtle improvement over the HD Blu-ray but still appreciated and I’ve accepted that this MS release is what Marty wants us to see. There is a rough visceral power to MS and Taxi Driver with truthful performances of both young DeNiro and Keitel that captures the heart and soul of NY during that period😎

      That’s exactly how I feel! It’s the same debate with James Cameron and George Lucas. At the end of the day if we don’t like the changes then that’s our opinions. But we have to respect their choices because it is their films loll. I was a little let down by this one personally but it’s Mean Streets and had to have it in the collection. The 50% off sale is why I did the giveaway for this. I had it pre ordered then saw it in the sale and grabbed it for a giveaway lol. It’s incredible to see how Scorsese, De Niro and Keitel so early in their careers. Them all still learning but still creating a raw gritty film.

    Believe it or not I think the DVD version of Mean Streets looks great. I watched it the other day in anticipation of the 4K release. Thanks for the review John. I'll be sticking with the DVD.

      No problem Jason!! I remember the DVD, I think that was what I watched the movie on first. It’s a lot more yellow now than it was then. sticking with that is a good idea I think.

    Watched the Criterion bluray and didn't like the yellow/teal look. I 1st saw this movie on commercial tv back in the 70s' and remember it looking like a normal movie.

      The one thing hate about the movie are the characters. I would hate to deal with idiots like that don't like to pay money they owe back.@@LetsTalkEntertainmentMedia

      @ricogomez4020 It’s really only Robert De Niro Character. But you understand that he’s his own worst enemy and that’s why he meets the fate he meets.

    • @ricogomez4020
      @ricogomez4020 7 місяців тому +1

      But the Harvey K. character is covering for him. Plus, that big fat guy who didn't want to pay them until a fight broke out and the cops came. Totally hate all these characters.@@LetsTalkEntertainmentMedia

      @ricogomez4020 I think that’s the environment they live in. That’s the loyalty they have for each other. The story is how Harvey’s character is torn between his screw up friend, doing the right thing and loyalty to his uncle.

      Criterion and Second Sight worked on the remaster together. This has been publicised online and will likely be mentioned in the transfer notes within the criterion booklet.
      The likelihood will be that the Second Sight transfer will be identical, but it's possible that they may do some additional work on the transfer for their release as they did with Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

    I saw this movie 1st time on commercial tv and didn't like it. I seen it about 4 more times and on all types of video and still have not liked it. But I may buy this 4k just to get free shipping in my Criterion order. I hate the ending.

    • @LetsTalkEntertainmentMedia
      @LetsTalkEntertainmentMedia  9 місяців тому +2

      i’m surprised you don’t like the ending. ai actually really like how they close the movie. The film doesn’t reach the heights of other Scorsese classics but I think it’s still a great movie.

    I hate what Criterion did to MIDNIGHT COWBOY by making it teal and also BULL DURHAM where the jackets are supposed to be Dodger Bull like and it's teal. That's why I have not bought those movies.

    • @LetsTalkEntertainmentMedia
      @LetsTalkEntertainmentMedia  9 місяців тому +1

      I have Bull Durham and I noticed that. It didn’t bother me that much. That is why I haven’t gotten Midnight Cowboy though. I’m hoping that gets an updated scan soon.

      No way the director approved that BULL DURHAM transfer with changing the color of the jackets. Is that movie approved by cinematographer or director?@@LetsTalkEntertainmentMedia
