  • If you want to license your product, an effective sell sheet will open the door and do the talking for you. But what makes a sell sheet good, exactly? How much detail do you really need to include? If companies aren't calling you back about your product idea, you may need to reexamine your marketing materials. In this series, inventRight cofounders Stephen Key and Andrew review real-life sell sheets submitted by people licensing their ideas for you to learn from.
    Want Andrew and Stephen to review your sell sheet? Email your sell sheet to stephen@inventright.com.
    Watch their initial request for sell sheets: • Are You Representing Y... .
    Please note: If your sell sheet/marketing materials are chosen to be reviewed in a video, that means your idea will be disclosed to the public. Make sure you are protected to an extent you feel comfortable with, aka you've filed a provisional patent application. Confused? Ask us in the comments.

    I like when you do a "sell sheet review"
    I use to "STOP" the video when I first see the SS and I try to optimize it. Then, I hit "PLAY" for your suggestions. It help me getting better.

    I really value the efforts you guys are putting into the real world advice and examples. As a former massage therapist, I was even more interested in this example. Wish I could help you with that shoulder Stephen. I know you will work on a solution for that pain point soon!

    Hi! i just discovered you guys today! great informative videos. Looking to buy the book very soon. I have an idea for the toy industry and i just wanted to know if your seminars and videos that ive been watching would apply for toy companies as well? or do those companies work differently and only consider in house staff and partners? Im very inexperienced and know absolutely nothing regarding business matters...but i'm willing to learn more to get my foot through the door. Thanks!

    • @inventRight
      @inventRight  8 років тому

      Stephen got his start in the toy industry! Because toy companies have been working with independent inventors for many many years, there are specifics to it. Check out his ideas about licensing and toys on Inc. www.inc.com/stephen-key/how-to-license-an-idea-to-a-toy-company.html and Entrepreneur www.entrepreneur.com/article/270699.

    I am aware that most of the Sell Sheet are pictures based on a designed product and I wanted to know whether it's necessary to design the product first and include them as pictures on a Sells Sheet, or whether I can send a proper and clear drawing of my idea product...?

    I have a question? I make a boardgame my own but it's not a finish product because it's not like supposed to be like the real thing in store... How can I make the game happen in an store that can make it for me with a cheaper cost.

    The "massaging/roller" category seem to be a crowded one. In addition, I would be surprise that a patent can be granted for any part of this object.
    Nice evaluation of the sell sheet, but for the product: "I'm out!"
    Thank you for sharing.

    How long should the video be linked to the sell sheet?

  • @melissaschilling1138
    @melissaschilling1138 3 роки тому +1

    Hi guys, most of this sell sheet seems focused on the consumer, but isn't the sell sheet intended to sell the licensing rights to a producer? Shouldn't it thus also note things that manufacturers might be interested in like "utilizes industry standard polyethylene", "can be manufactured with low cost injection molding", "easy packaged and shipped because it is assembled by customer" or "potential for add-on sales by marketing additional attachments to customers", etc?

    • @inventRight
      @inventRight  3 роки тому +1

      You want to design your sell sheet with the end user in mind. If the benefit of your product idea is to the manufacturer itself - like, "saves time" or "costs less" - then yes, you would want to design the sell sheet speaking to them. If the benefit of your product is to the consumer, such as "makes dicing easier" or "get the job done faster," then you would want to orient the benefits to them (even though the licensee is the recipient.) Good question, thank you for asking!

    You program is awesome. I am working on my sell sheet. I have a great idea for a merging technology idea, for licencing a product. I would like to do a coop arrangement, with a product of Stevens. Can we get the conversation going and disclose the idea. (NDA).
    I like the old saying "you can only take with you what you give away"" You guys are living it. Thanks Mike

    If you license a product, do you have to be exclusive to the company licensing it? I have a fitness product I am working on a sell sheet for and wondering how to handle it if multiple companies (in a dream scenario) want to license the product. Thanks!

    • @inventRight
      @inventRight  7 років тому

      Hi Jennifer. Most companies want an exclusive because that has a lot of value. That doesn't mean you have to give it to them, though. There are ways of licensing the same idea to more than one company based on the contract you negotiate. For more of our negotiating advice, check out our licensing library: www.inventright.com/help/licensing-library.

    Is it wise to post my sell sheet as well as talk about my product (short video) on youtube... being that Companies are simply NOT RESPONDING TO MY EMAILS/CALLS in attempt to reach out for the proper procedure for product submission. (I HAVE MY PROVISIONAL FILED).. BUT...I HAVE NO CAPABILITY TO MAKE THIS PRODUCT TO SHOW It In ACTION... IM STUCK:( HOW SO I GET SOMEONE TO LOOK AT MY PRODUCT???

    • @inventRight
      @inventRight  8 років тому

      You don't want to post your sell sheet far and wide; keep it close. Getting in to companies can be challenging - you need to be persistent and follow up. We have a lot of videos here about that (see playlist "Contacting Potential Licensees"). You can also use LinkedIn to get in: www.entrepreneur.com/article/270375. One of our staff would be happy to talk to you about it as well: inventright.com/contact-us-today.

    What's better sell sheets ,or websites showing it in action !

    • @inventRight
      @inventRight  8 років тому

      In action is always great, which is why many of our students are now creating short video 'infomercials' to include in their sell sheets. Potential licensees need something static to share, hold on to, and reference though. A link on your sell sheet to your UA-cam video does the trick.

What's the best strategy to sort through the ideas and pick the ones that are better to license or more likely to license and what are not such great ideas? Thank you for your time!

    If the Sell Sheet is for making a pitch to industry, don't they already know the benefits of massage? By highlighting the benefits on the Sell Sheet are you letting them know you are marketing-minded? Aren't they more interested in the benefit to themselves? (An innovative product that can be produced easily enough and is likely to sell and make them money.)
    Yes, if I come up with a new straw design I might want the company to know whether it's meant to be a fun thing for kids or therapeutic device for sick individuals. But you hardly think you have to say Wacky Fun! or Saves Your Life! in 36 point type in order for them to get it. Or do you?

      Hey guys, I just might. I'm really enjoying the show. I just watched 2 more episodes about Sell Sheets (Bike phone holder and bucket handles). I'm starting to see the wisdom of a Sell Sheet that Boom! delivers quickly and clearly for all audiences.
      I do have a specific question about PPAs: If I did a bucket handle, and it had a curve, a hook, and a notch, how could I protect my design from being copied if someone only used 2 of 3 design elements. How can I protect each element AND the totality?

    • @MA-oe1pu
      @MA-oe1pu 6 років тому

      John, I would agree with you. When sending in a sell sheet to a prospective licensee, we are intending to "sell" to the licensee a product that they already are familiar with since it is in their industry otherwise we wouldn't be contacting them. Therefore, it makes sense that I would want my sell sheet to impress them with the benefits that my product has over the benefits of competitive products.
