Sell sheets are an important document that all board game designers (who want to pitch their games to publishers) need to know how to make.
In this video, I explain what a sell sheet is, share some examples of sell sheets I have created, go over the important things to include in a sell sheet and talk about the program I use to create my sell sheets.
Here is a Google Draw sell sheet template you can use to create your own sell sheet: docs.google.co...

One thing I wanted to add about the purpose of a sell sheet and what happens after you give it to a publisher:
Publishers will ask for a sell sheet if they are interested in your game after you pitch it to them. They can then refer to the sell sheet later to quickly and easily remember what your game is about. If they are still interested after they share it with others at their company, they will then ask for you to mail a prototype to them that they can play and then decide if they want to move forward with the game or not.

You’re so welcome! Creating sell sheets is definitely a whole skillset but once you’ve made a few, they get easier to make. And they really force you to explain the game clearly and concisely. Best of luck making your sell sheets!

Thanks for this. At the Sellsheet stage myself and seeing examples on screen with yoru experiences helps to contextualise them for myself. Awesome stuff 👍

Thank you, Pam Walls, for this video. I would like to hear your thoughts on the right timing to patent the game.

Thanks for watching! I’m not a lawyer, but I don’t believe there’s any benefit to getting a patent - board game mechanics can’t be copyrighted, only the expression of the mechanics can be (like the wording of the rules or art). Focus your time and energy on making a great game rather than on worrying about getting (and paying for) a patent! But, again, this isn’t legal advice 😅

Hey, great video, thank you! I'm about to make a sell sheet for a mid- heavy euro and I'm thinking how difficult it will be to include a graphic that will effectively capture the essence of the game since there are so many elements tied into the core action selection mechanism. What are your thoughts on QR codes that link to short videos highlighting the various elements/ mechanisms of the game? For example, it would be easy for me to show a graphic on how you chose an action, but that wouldn't be helpful as there are 9 unique actions that work differently stemming from the core action selection process. Knowing there isn't much room in a 1 page sell sheet, would QR codes help to direct publishers to a resource that would provide a quick overview of each mechanism? This wouldn't be a game run-through, but a 30-60 second video highlight of each action mechanism. Thank you for your insight

Hi Joshua, from my experience, you want to make it as easy as possible for the publishers, without any additional steps. The QR code sounds like a great idea, but I doubt how many publishers would actually take the time to click on it and watch the video. It seems you might want to have a simple branching image that shows the different options (just the names of the choices, not going into detail about what they each are). Also, the QR code could be a good idea if you are planning on handing out the sell sheet as a printed document in person, but I'd suggest the code link to a 2 minute how to play video rather than just about the action selection specifically. If you are emailing the sell sheet, then don't have the QR code, and include a link to the short how to play video in the email and attach your rules to the email as well. Hope that helps!
