In this video, I explain rational choice theory as it is used in sociology and criminology. The rational choice perspective has been very influential, not only to explain crime and criminal behavior, but also in political science, international relations, public administration, economics, public policy, and more generally the social sciences. Some of the most often used real life examples of applications of rational choice theory are situational crime prevention techniques.
Modern rational choice theory as used in criminology is typically based on the work by Cornish and Clarke, who published the book “The reasoning criminal” in 1986. The rational choice perspective is considered to be part of opportunity theory, which focuses on crime and victimization.
Clear, concise and easy to follow explanation, better than any 2000 word article could provide. Thank you!
A very helpful source for me to catch up or refresh my all education in criminal justice. Thanks for teaching us again and providing an easy explanation, better than all sources I have read before, thanks again!
Thanks for the nice words, Vipon!
I really like your clear explanations for theories that students (and teachers) can find difficult to understand.
Glad you like them!
Yeah that's true
I have listened to others lecturers on the same topic but yours is exceptional and interesting
Happy to hear it, John
Love the measured discussion of situational crime prevention. Hopefully, we can weigh policy in favor of less attractive crime committing environs.
rational choice theory is a repeat of classical school theory
Thank you for the upload! If you do not mind me asking, is that a Dutch accent that I am detecting?

i disagree with the explanation of benefits outweight the cost, then crime will be committed and vice versa.. it does not explain the circumstances with kleptomania syndrome, focus is so much on opportunity and neglecting the responsibility to accept his actions or inaction.
She addressed it, the consideration of psychological and social factors in the causation of crimes are two other theories which both exclude rational choice as a causation
Nice explanation
