In this video, I discuss symbolic interactionism theory as it was formulated and explained by famous sociologists, e.g. by George Herbert Mead, Herbert Blumer, and Charles Cooley. Symbolic interactionism is an important theory in sociology and criminology and relates to other theories like labelling theory but has also faced criticism. Key concepts include, for example, the concept of self and the looking glass self.
This crash course includes the fundamental meaning and principles from the theory, the highlights as used in education, and examples in daily life and criminology. The lecture also discusses how the symbolic interactionism perspective has applications for social media, deviance, and crime. In doing so, it hopefully answers some of the questions that often come up around the social interactionist perspective.

This was helpful! Your video provided me with a clearer understanding of how Symbolic Interactionism applies to the "Spirits Catch You, and You Fall Down" book by Anne Fademan, specifically in the context of Lea Lee's Hmong family and the Medical community. Thank you for shedding light on this aspect of the book and its relevance to the micro theories I'm exploring.
