The Ionosphere

- The ionosphere is the ionized part of Earth’s upper atmosphere that extends from about 80 to 600 km above sea level. It’s a region within the thermosphere filled with charged particles that play a crucial role in radio communication by reflecting radio waves back to Earth. It also contributes to auroras and is ionized by solar radiation. This video briefly overviews the 3 regions of the Ionosphere, how they work and how they were discovered. Do you know how the E layer got its name? Do you know what the Appleton Layer is?

Back in the 1980's I used to listen to NFL games on the U.S. Armed forces network with my radio in the U.K. I'd get the early game in, but at around 21:15 the signal would get weaker and weaker until all you could hear was static. I never knew why. . . Now I know! Thanks!!
These videos kick a$$. Great stuff
The voice over work gives me the Beyond 2000 Simon Reeve vibe. Smashing job mate.
My best ABC voice. 20 years of practice 😉 Thanks.
Saved to favorites. 73!
Great work- educational. Can be useful when preparing for amateur radio tests.
Absolutely!
Good video and explanation
Thank you!
Another fantastic video!
Thank you! Cheers!
Great stuff
FYI Appleton knew the "E" layer as the Heaviside-Kennelly layer, predicted many years before. His experiments in radio wave reflection detected three layers, which he identified as D, E and F in order to allow for the possibility that there might one day be layers detected lower than the D layer. No such layers have been found.
Another gem. Thanks for sharing.
Radiogenic Chemistry is a game changer.
👍👍 great explanation and production. 73 KC8WVG
Many thanks!
A very well produced video.
Quite slick. Well done. 73, Stuart VK3SKS.
Thanks Stuart. 😊
Impressive and educational! From a lil ole GROL. You have a new "student" sir. 😊
Very good, Andrew!! Great work 🙂
Thanks Nik. Winter is the time for making content. Gotta keep these ATV boys fed with content 😆
Very professional explanation. I enjoyed it. VK2LO.
Glad you liked it!
