Very non informative review honestly, you have to realize that these are studio monitors with an extremely FLAT (linear) frequency response; this ensures that the sound is true to source, they will need to be frequency adjusted to meet the atmosphere of your room. What you are potentially hearing is coloration from walls or ceiling reflections (or perhaps just a bad recording). Every room is different, this is why you can't set a system up at one venue and expect to not have to adjust your equalizer to accommodate reflective or refractive surfaces. I am by no means disqualifying your OPINION regarding the speakers sound quality as I have personally not used these particular models, however if you are listening to them for stereo content on a daily basis these are not really designed to be used in that manner, meaning in place of your hifi system speakers (Filling a room), they are intended for near-field listening.
Okay. As an Audio Engineer,I'm going to explain something to you...These are Meant for Music/Audio Production ! Also,if you want better speaker wire,go buy a roll of it. They are great Speakers and i own the Silver CR4's and the Green CR5 BT's. Again, these aren't Meant to be for "simply listening" they're meant for Critical Listening (what you hear is what you get) No enhancements,No tweaks,No reductions..Here's a tip,Acoustically treat your bedroom and THEN buy another pair of these and tell me How you feel about them then. Just letting you know that you'll need to go Online and research Speaker placement & Acoustic treatment (placement of that also). in My opinion, you didn't even give these a Proper Try ! It isn't even with Mackie either. You'll get this with Many,if not Damn near All Professional and yes, even Low budget Studio Monitors. You have a Lot to Learn. Mind you...Mackie sells Actual Home Speakers and they are Fantastic ! Meant for Fun listening (music, video games, movies).
Everyone kept recommending these for me too and I just bought a pair. I think maybe running through a mixer might help that's what I plan to try. I think the ones I have ordered are the standard CR4's they have the green rings on them.
You're a smart guy and you have some depth of knowledge. I do take issue with a few things (as a long term CR3 owner). 1) Neither Mackie nor any other audio company is silly enough or cynical enough to charge $100 for changing the color of the trim. What you might have encountered was the stock CR4s on special offer, and compared the price to the limited edition. 2) You possibly hit a room "mode" at 120Hz, which filled the room with lots of bass energy - some of it out of phase. It is naive to imagine that Mackie would release to the public (and to sophisticated users and industry reviewers) a monitor that has a 10db bump in the bass. 3) I have seen very few of the "meh" reviews you mentioned. I have seen quite a lot of positive reviews of the CR4. 4) a little bit of humility goes a long way. There is a certain 'click bait' self-certainty about telling people to "please don't buy these" right off the bat in the title. 5) Audio sellers (like me in my previous business) can well do without customers who buy new boxed product with a view to returning them. Anyway, I don't doubt your sincerity, and I was very interested in some of your comments. Cheers.
Or the room acoustics. Although it looks as if he has good "natural" dampening with bed and carpet? I have Tapco S-8 speakers and there are some bass frequencies in my room that get amplified in the corners. Bought some bass traps, got better. I hope I can completely stop this problem, ordered more bass traps and cubes for the upper corners. I wanted to buy the Mackie CR4 Bluetooth for recording and listening to music with my laptop in the living room. So, would it be better to go with Presonus Eris?
The reason for connecting the passive speaker with just bare speaker wire instead of a connector is so that you don't accidentally plug the power amplified signal into something that can't handle it and will break it
I have a audio tecnica for turntable, and the Mackie CR4 - works ok in my small appartement, especially acoustic sounds nice. not really any Bass tho. How do i pair the Onyx 3 with the Mackie cr4 (that are not bluetooth), ? pleace help.
using crappy M-Audio av32s right now!thought about getting the cr5bt in october!which is the best pair of monitors for around 100-150 dollar price range?
I think I need to remind you that that the Mackie CR4s is for studio monitoring and obviously it aims to produce flat and detail sound. Therefore, it won't sound good on every single thing you've played through them. Also, your original plan to buy them is to return them, then why you need to buy them. Are you joking to me????????????????? If you really need powered monitors, I think you need to do a lot of research and sure what type you need.
While watching the video i thought to myself "should i take advice from a guy who paints his finger nails"? Then I read the comments down below, and your clearly confused. - When you shit on these speakers like this at least suggest another pair in the exact price range. You probably kept these speakers didn't you?
Soft toys? LOL We'd all love to hear your monitor recommendation! NOT. They are made to monitor remixes not playback whatever you're playing. Show us then.

I've had them for quite a few years now, I personally like the amp, you can have pretty high volume and decent quality for a very low price.
I have the CR3s. I, and all else, love 'em. A 3" or 4" speaker is not meant to push much bass.
I guarantee the rumble he's talking about at 120 hz is the port. You need to pull them off the wall and put some acoustic treatment behind them.
Brother these are studio monitors there for producing and mixing music that’s why it’s a different sound with games etc.

DemonX how have they been so far ?

Totally agree, i returned my CR3 as well! The high's are fine but other than a deep punch the low's sounds like crap.
