She had a unique, gorgeous voice, but she suffered from severe anorexia. She finally beat it, but by then, just a little after she was 30, her heart was so damaged, it just stopped. Cardiac arrest. No one had a voice like hers.
So true. Eating disorders were a secret illness few knew about it. She had beaten it but the damage to her heart killed her in her 30’s. Sadly the same thing happened to a former classmate of mine 20 years later, she slsonhad recovered a decade earlier but she died at age 32.

Listen when you're feeling down, but *for no particular reason* (not when someone you love died, unless you want to remember the times you used to go to that person for comfort, and they were always there for you). Ironically, you'll feel better after listening to Karen describe what you're feeling. It's cathartic.

I so appreciate your honest opinions. Karen Carpenter was an awesome drummer, too. I love playing this music on rainy days when I stay inside and do house cleaning. Then I throw in some AC/DC or other metal.
The thing about Karen was the purity, warmth and clarity of her voice. You understood every word she sang with ease, and it never ever sounded strained.
That’s a valid reaction. Back then vocalists didn’t really do the “slow-speed up-slow down” thing you were talking about. It was pretty much one tempo throughout, as far as I can recall.
You need to remember "music videos" as you know them didn't exist until around 1980/81. Of course there is film clips of live performance but they weren't music videos
I always thought of "thriller" as the first real music video as opposed to, for example, "jailhouse rock" by elvis is a video of a choreographed performance.

This is a simple song to understand. This is a song right out of her life. She was always looking for love and a guy to love her. However, for many reasons that have little to do with her, it was difficult for Karen to achieve. She had no support, even from her family. It was a constant fight. She was lonely, she had the blues, and her life was just bumping along. She liked playing the drums, but she never liked being the one out front, the Golden Voice of the group, and in many performances she gave, sometimes she sang from way in the back of the stage set. She was one of the greatest international female voices of all time -- so smooth and so silky, it just melted peoples hearts. Finally, her loneliness, blues, and then depression overtook her and resulted in her unexpected and sudden death that shocked the world.

I think this song means different things to different people. Depending where you are in your life & your experiences. Most people thought of it as being a downer going to work after a weekend. Some people get depressed or saddened by the rain. Not me... I love the rain.

Carpenters were ballad type ..but, there everyday problems that each and everyone of us are or have gone through. Her voice! Man!

Dopey? That’s skill. To be that smooth on vocals while playing drums is extremely versatile. She was a drummer. She was asked to sing, but she wanted to drum. This is one, if not the best, female vocalists ever.
