Karen was described as, "a drummer who could sing". An accomplished drummer was asked, "What's it like to be called the best drummer." His answer was simply, "Go ask Karen Carpenter that." Her PASSION was the drums and that she was a fantastic singer was discovered and put out front later. Richard had the incredible talent for taking songs and re-arranging them to fit Karen's voice perfectly.

Karen's too-short life is a tragedy, indeed. It's been said that when Karen passed away the angels in Heaven rejoiced! They had just gotten their new lead singer. 🙏 RIP Karen.
May you continue to abide forever in your music and in the hearts of those who listen to your songs.

The best female voice of all time. Unmatched for her tone, warmth and vocal range.
As of today, October 9, 2023, Richard Carpenter is working on a new studio album. This album will be her first solo recording since 1987's "Time Out of Mind." Carpenter has been working on the album for several years, and has been searching for a vocalist who can fill the void left by her sister Karen, who died in 1983.
In an interview with Billboard in 2022, Carpenter said that the album will have a sound similar to that of the Carpenters, but that it will also be an evolution of his sound. "It's still soft rock, but it's a little more modern," Carpenter said. "There's also a bit of experimentation."
Carpenter has not yet announced a release date for the album, but has said that he hopes it will be released in 2024.
In addition to his work on the new album, Carpenter is also working on a documentary about the life and career of the Carpenters. The documentary, which is being produced by the company "Greenwich Entertainment", will be released in 2024.
Carpenter also continues to tour and give concerts. In 2023, he toured the United States with singer-songwriter Michael Feinstein.
There is no voice today that compares to Karen Carpenter's. She was a unique musical genius in the world and goes far beyond her time. It without autotune or any other manipulation. Just her voice and her brother Richard's incredible arrangements. No current artist can match this in this era. Karen was also one of the best drummers of her time and she could sing well while she played the drums simultaneously. A true top talent. RIP Karen Carpenter, We will always remember you and love you!!! 💛💛💛
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------
QEPD Karen Carpenter, ¡¡¡ Siempre te recordaremos y te querremos!!! 💛💛💛

I was older (26) when the Carpenters got the A&M contract and put out their first album in 1969 but I had seen them in clubs (Whisky-A-go-go) in Los Angeles before. I fell in love with them the first time I saw them and have not lost it at 80. Karen considered herself to be a jazz drummer who sang some. Karen's drumming was praised by fellow drummers Hal Blaine, Cubby O'Brien, Buddy Rich and Modern Drummer magazine. She was talented, rehearsed every day and within a year, she could play in complex time signatures, such as the 5 4 in Dave Brubeck's "Take Five". "Take Five" is a jazz standard composed by Paul Desmond. The track was written after the Quartet's drummer, Joe Morello, requested a song in quintuple (5/4) meter. I belong to several record clubs in the 60s and 70s and bought all their albums. Each album I immediately recorded on my 2 Teac reel to reel tape decks than put the album away and have now duped them into a thumb drive in WAV format which I can put into a USB port in my car and play over the radio. I have over 1,800 songs on tape (and thumb drive) like that everything from big bands to pop to jazz to surf to rock and roll to country to hippie to folk to Doo-Wop. Time ranges from the early 1940s to 2023 BUT have never heard anyone top the Carpenters!

I was around the same time and also fell for Karen Carpenter. Just by co-incidence I also had a cousin, about the same age, that died about a week after Karen in pretty much the same circumstances. I felt terrible that I had no idea that my cousin was going through the same kind of turmoil. It affected me pretty deeply. Whenever I see or hear anything of Karen Carpenter now it really tears me up.

@@KenFullman I am sorry for you and your family. At that time not many had ever heard of it, and even fewer knew how to treat it. I don't know if they know how to treat it now or not. It is a terrible loss no matter as the victims are usually too young.

I look forward to more Carpenters songs. Thanks again.

I was only 6 yrs old in 1971 when I first heard The Carpenters and I was hooked on their music but mainly listening to her voice because it was so soothing. She was a very talented drummer and one of my favorite songs of theirs was the rendition of “Please Mr. Postman”. All of the musicians and singers back then had to be spot on such as The Osmonds, Jackson 5 and so many more.

Karen was a good drummer n Richard a pianist n he sang harmony with her. I met them in 1977. They were so friendly but you could tell Karen wasn't well n it turned out she was suffering with anorexia that caused heart failure n she died 1983 at age 32. The anorexia was due to their managers telling her she was gaining too much weight.. Richard is alive 76. I'm 71 now.

Hi! I didn’t catch your name but you got me, I’m a top 5 subscriber. Anyone who on their new channel has Carpenters as their second video, has me. I’m Joe and I’m an OG Carpenters fan. Since I saw you on a quick search Carpenters Army should be finding you quickly, you will know if they do, I found you. I bought Close To You when I was 14 to celebrate my first “real” record for my Sony music system, AM/FM, Cassette & Albums. I git the LP at Sam Goody’s and it was on a special rack at the front of the store in the #2 position. Memories. I loved your analysis of the song and the best video of the song. I who thought they knew everything have learned a few things thanks to UA-cam and reactors. I’ll share some of those to see how many you are aware of. I heard about Superstar and need to add some info. The song dates to 1969. Carpenters were far from the first to do it. (They just did it best IMHO) It was written by Bonnie Bramlett and Leon (God) Russell, as Groupie (Superstar). Delaney and Bonnie originally recorded it. (On UA-cam) Richard saw Bette Middler perform it on The Tonight Show. So that’s the heritage of the song, mix in Rita Coolidge and Cher also. Groupie didn’t hit until Richard rearranged it into Superstar. There is also a live video of an older Bonnie singing Groupie to a small audience with Leon in the audience, not a dry eye, let me tell you.
    ua-cam.com/video/WvEgiZ1lS7Q/v-deo.html
Now for my Carpenters ideas. A video from The Ed Sullivan Show in 1970, Karen is 20, Carpenters performed The Bacharach/David Medley live outside at Walter Reed Hospital. Veterans and patients are the audience. Karen is electric and the band is just trying to keep up. LOL
    ua-cam.com/video/yrsuLCF9FtI/v-deo.html
Another one I just, I mean, learned about. It’s technically NOT Carpenters. It’s 1967 they’re in Joe Osborne’s garage making demo tapes. They record California Dreamin’. No video just slide show. Richard put it on a compilation disc in the early 2000’s.
    ua-cam.com/video/pxpMkMmGkTE/v-deo.html
Good luck with your channel. I’m gonna go check out Bread…

I grew up in the 60's and early 70's, being born in 1956. Like some others here have mentioned, while my older brothers listened to hard rock, acid rock, I listened to pop music. Turns out I have a birth defect that made it so I could not hear the words in hard rock music due to the loud instruments. Soft rock and folk music was what I could enjoy, and that made the Carpenters music good for me to enjoy. I had a crush on Karen, broke my heart when she died. To this day their music still touches my heart and soothes my soul.

I was never a fan of most contemporary music in my youth (born 1952), but the one album I did buy (on cassette so I could play it on road trips) was by Carpenters. There is just something about Karen's voice that gives me the shivers even today.
I think my favourite, which seems to be rarely reacted to, is " This Masquerade"

The 1950s-1970s put out the best collection of music in world history. I couldn't agree more with EVERYTHING you say from 8:10-8:59.... I've been echoing those EXACT sentiments ever since these types of Music Reaction videos started. I'd also add to your commentary that the harmonies in every type of music in the 70's was also a staple of the music of the 70's. And don't forget, the voices of the 70's (and prior) was not ELECTRONICALLY PITCH ENHANCED! They new how to sing and play their instruments. The songs of the 70's were so impactful in a positive way that those of us who lived in that era experienced a wonderful time to be alive. The variety of styles of each musical classification was so creative and original. I can talk for HOURS about this one topic....
Like you, I remember Karen's early departure from us. I was 15yrs young. And even though it wasn't "COOL" to say publicly I LOVED THE CARPENTERS I surely did...❤. I always thought and wished that her and John Denver would have done a duet of some kind. What a magical pairing of two voices that would have been! Thank
God I grew up in the 70's.

So glad to discover a musician/reactor dedicated to some great songs of the past. Karen was an absolute treasure. It's so sad trying imagine the great catalog she could have created had she lived. Linda Ronstadt, who's songs are reemerging today, is another whose talent we lost too early.
But I want to be sure you're aware of a special legend-to-be born in 2006 embodying the souls of lost jazz & R&B greats. Angelina jordan was exposed early to grandma's collection of classic jazz and fell in love wirh the genre. A genuine prodigy, Angelina's parents have carefully guided her childhood, education and vocal training and kept multiple producers and labels (including Disney) at bay.
At age 7-8 Angelina entered and won Norway's Got Talent covering songs by Billie Holiday, Nancy Sinatra and a classic Ella/Louie Armstrong performance of "Summertime". When Britain decided to throw an 85th birthday concert for Quincy Jones, his people specifically reqested an appearance by 12 year old Angelina to sing one of his arrangements.
She had a YT catalog of ooer 130 performances (and over a billion views) in 2020 when she appeared on Americas Got Talent, where she performed such a unique soulful rendition of "Bohemian Rapsody" that Queen granted her a copyright for her version.
Here's a very young star reviving and modernizing jazz today. The recent release if her first EP demonstrates that. There are a couple songs that, to my ancient ears, introduce this young lady's very special talents.
Dinah Washington's "What a Difference a Day Makes" Angelina Jordan (age 8.5) 2016 outdoor.

The harmonies are actually Richard Carpenters creation as he arranged every song they did. Karen was the voice but Richard was the brains behind this complete outfit.

Karen Carpenter stands alone as a great female vocalist who when you hear the first word you know it is her.

I love what you are saying. I Loved The Carpenters. I was devastated when she passed away. Could I make a suggestion? The music you have playing in the back ground is sort of a distraction, but otherwise you are doing a Great job.

I share your sentiments about the 70s and some other great ballads from the day are Love Ballad by LTD, The Closer I Get To You by Flack and Hathaway, and Wildflower by Skylark. Remember those?

Give me a chance you said. Clocked in at Sub 255. Appreciate the position and potential. Question becomes, where are we going? Where is the point in the spectrum that your imagination extends to? Fats Waller, Dinah Washington, Motown or Anything 70's (Oh heck it would be heaven but need more)? Then the seventies begins where the 60s could not imagine beyond the psychedelics with RUSH, Heart, CSN(Y), Doobie Brothers right to The Cranberries with Zombie and beyond. Where are we going?

Very few, if any, female singers have a better voice than Karen Carpenter, pure gold. So sad that she was taken so young.

The music of the 70's was different because the performers actually had talent. They did not depend on digital hocus pocus. As you said, they did not have Auto-Tune. Most singers today would not be able to play with just a microphone with a guitar or piano as back up. Carpenters overdubbed their own voices so that it is their voices you hear in the background. Karen had a one of a kind sound that when one of their songs starts you know instantly who it is singing. She was absolutely magical and is sorely missed to this day. May she Rest in Peace.🌈

It's a shame that I can only “like” here once. I'd like to fire off a whole salvo of “Yes”, “That's exactly how it is” here. As a baby boomer and a person who grew up with the Carpenters, I look in horror at the soulless “music” that is presented everywhere today. Presumably and unfortunately a reflection of today's society. Soulless. Dead.
Thank you for this very loving and attentive assessment of the song.

You should look into Carole King. She started out as a songwriter and many of her songs are famous, albeit sung by other people. In them70s She came into her own. Tapestry is where you should look next.

In 1970, we thought that a new era was coming. There was optimism that racism was defeated. This music had that spirit. But... 50 years later. Same bullshit.😢

Rainy days and Mondays wasn't about rain or a Monday. It was about a breakup she didn't want to accept that felt like a rainy day and / or a Monday. Those always hurt the most. She doesn't sing rainy Mondays because that would be a day. She sang rainy days and Mondays. The times you just want to lay in bed all day and feel the heartbreak whether it's raining or a Monday. It's a truly deep felt song to anyone who's gone through it that knows. When she sang, "Something to do without, we know what is all about." Is what a rainy day or a Monday feels like that just makes you just want to sit back and take the day off to reflect and try to figure out where it all went wrong. Much like a rainy day or a Monday. Such a haunting song about relationships that didn't blame or scream at the other. Nowadays, it's I'm gonna slash your tires and key your truck and knock out windows crazy. That's where music has gone. Writers and singers these days don't get it. We've lost a generation, and it's sad.

Hoping for some cuddle time or more?
You have your Carpenter 8-track, Carole King Tapestry, maybe some Carly Simon. lol
The rest of the time you and your buddies are listening to ZZ Top, Deep Purple, ELP, YES, etc.
Those were the days, my friend! :)

Karen wanted to be known as a drummer who could sing rather than a singer who could drum. One take Karen, usually took only one take to record a song. Passed away at age 32 from complications of anorexia. She was one of the first celebrities to bring to light the disease.
