- I was able to fix our Whirlpool Duet dryer, which was displaying “F01” error message and not starting, by replacing a burnt relay on the control board. Below is the link to the relay I bought from Advanced Electronics via Ebay:

Another success! I have the same Dryer in your video and sure enough the relay was the issue. The G8P-1A4P-12VDC was only $6.95 now with Amazon prime next day. I wish I could share a picture. The inside of the plastic case below the circuit board had an explosion looking black spatter on it from short circuiting. Fired right up and starting working like normal after I replaced it and turned it on. Super thanks for sharing. Saved me at least $200 for a new board and a service call charge to boot if I didn't so the work myself. Super grateful for sharing with your fellow home repair dad. Thank you!
And yet another successful relay replacement! Bought from Amazon - the package contained 2 relays and cost me just $13 CDN. Had to wait about 2 weeks for delivery - installed it yesterday and now have a fully functioning dryer. Many thanks for posting the initial video James!!
You bet, thanks for sharing your success!
Do you have a link for the relay
I had the exact issue and I was able to re-solder the same pin without buying another relay. This video was very informative and gave me a heads up for what to look for. THANKS!
I had the same issue with our Maytag dryer. The repair company wanted $80 service fee just to come out. We discussed the error code on the phone and it was determined the board would have to be replaced. The cost for all this? ( including the mystery “diagnostic fee?) Service fee $80, replace the board cost $340...total $420. Ive seen videos similar to yours and concluded I could repair this myself. The burn mark above the relay, same. I checked on Amazon and although not an Amron relay, it’s a replacement brand I bought and the dryer works perfectly. The cost? $11 and about an 90 minutes including soldering the new relay. The wife is thrilled and I enjoyed the fix AND saving $409. Thanks so much for folks like you to post these videos to help folks not get taken in by overpriced service charges and highly marked up parts.
You’re welcome, and I agree - I rely on self-help videos from fellow youTubers all the time, and was happy to “give back” a little with this one. Thanks for watching!
Amen. Life savers n $$$ savers. Lol
10 minutes to take it all apart and a dab of solder and I’m back in business!!! Thank you for helping me zero in on where to look.
THANKS! The dryer works like a charm! I ordered the part from Amazon for $20 (in less than 24 hours to receive it with Prime). I am very happy with the result. Once again thank you very much for your video and all the information. I'm going to put away my clothesline now...
Thank you so so so so so much! I almost spent $250 for a whole control board! money I don't have! I just ordered the relay and cross my fingers it will be fine. It looked exactly burnt like yours. You are a life saver! Clearly explained and I feel confident after your help!
You're very welcome. Please don't hesitate to send a message if you have any questions once the replacement relay arrives.
Thank you very much I followed your instructions almost to the T and now my dryer works perfect no more F01 , and more importantly my wife is happy with her working dryer and I saved over $250.
Awesome instructions thank you again for posting this video
Never soldered in my life, watching this...bought a tool and the relay. Worked like a charm.
Excellent, made this video years ago and our dryer is still going strong, hoping same for you.
Although it's a good low-cost option to try and replace the relay - it's quicker, easier, more reliable to just replace the entire board. Especially since many people have no soldering equipment or experience doing it.
Little dab did just fine. But you’re right, I’ve no expert, but I know my way around an iron.
You could train a monkey to do simple solder job like this. I'd recommend to almost anyone: instead of flushing away $400 just spend $20 on the relay, if you don't already own a soldering iron spend $40 on a decent one, practice using it for half an hour, then do the job yourself. You'll acquire a practical & valuable money-saving new skill and save $350 on the dryer repair you are currently confronted with.
Great video I fixed my dryer with tips from you thanks. My motor relay blew bad it melted the plastic housing. A 10$ relay and a half hour of my time now she 100%!! Saved $x00s and my lady is happy!!
As they say: Happy wife, happy life. Glad I could help.
Another successful relay replacement! Your video was quite detailed and encouraged me to try. I hadn't used a solder iron before but it proved to be much easier than I expected.
Thank you James! You nailed it and now have my dryer back operational…and a happy wife!😅
Thank you so much for taking the time to make and share this! Your thorough explanation helped my partner fix our dryer in just a few minutes! Which is awesome, because we very much believe in repair instead of just buying all new stuff. Plus, while using a clothesline works great most of the time, it sure is helpful to have a working dryer. Having this fixed seriously reduced the stress in our lives. Thank you again!
By the way, you have a great voice. Very calming.
Glad I could help!
This video was spot on. I had the exact same issue. Tested relay, and it was good, but it had a blown out cold solder connection. Repaired solder joint and it works like a champ! Thanks for posting.
This video was very very helpful and informative! I had the same problem and was quoted $300 for a new board and $250 in labor… $11 on Amazon and 10 minutes of my time and my dryer is running just fine again! Thank you !!
That's wild. Big bucks to have someone fix it! I lucked up only had to remove control panel board, find blacken shorts, clean with brass brush, then resolder. Only parts/supply was solder. This was on a Whirlpool Cabrio by the way. What state was the estimate in ? I'm in NC. Thanks. Keep on saving . Lol
Thank you for posting this! This was the exact issue I found with my whirlpool duet dryer. The fact that you swapped out the relay and it worked makes me confident it will work on mine as well. I just ordered the relay and will give it a shot.
You’re welcome, best of luck with your repair!
I noticed that the model number was different even though the voltage and amp were the same does that not make a difference when replacing these relays?
@@wdfshampoo it did not make a difference in my case. I made sure the voltage and amp ratings were the same, and that the pins were aligned the same. My replacement relay fit well and is still working over a year later.
Excellent. I just had the exact issue as shown. However, my relay was functional. Therefore, I repaired the solder joint and in 10 minutes I was back in business. Thank you!!!
Is it still working. Did you check continuity on relay. Did surge cause initial blow out and now no more surges?
Nice video, I had identical problem, except my dryer turned out the E4F4 code. Part was $400 but ten weeks (maybe delivery. Bought a new dryer, but they keep delaying that, so in desperation checked out UA-cam. My board looked perfect on top, but after removing it from the case the burned out copper strip was obvious. Soldered in a little jumper and we were good.
Thanks
Thanks for the tip on where you bought your relay that working for you, seems digikey and mouser in Canada both have none in stock and ebay is often a crap shoot on quality. I re-soldered a new trace to get it running again temporarily while I wait for a new relay. I have no doubt that the relay is what caused the solder joint to fail.
Thanks James for this video. I was thinking of attempting changing the relay, and your video confirmed my decision. I was able to find an equivalent relay locally (Toronto), same day for 7.95. The solution worked for me! Thanks again.
Awesome, glad to hear it.
Edgar, where did you find the relay in Toronto? I need to do the same repair and your information would be helpful.
Hi Jason. A1-electronic Parts. Near Sherway gardens. It is a small unit.
@@jasoncharbonneau9588 A1-Electronic parts, near Sherway Gardens.
I kept the same switch, cleaned up the burn mark, and used copper-desolder to remove the solder joint. I then soldered a jumper wire. FIXED! "Joe's Classic Video Games" channel has the same problem but with jumper wire fix.
James I just did your repair and it worked perfectly thank you for posting I paid $7.12 for part plus ship .
Awesome, glad it worked for you
Please send store location
If ur not sure that your relay is bad, take a 9v battery to test the switch side of the circuit. You should hear an audible "clicking" sound.
So glad I found your video. I ended up doing the same thing and saving about $200. Thanks a bunch!!
Can buy used dryers on the marketplace all day for a 100 bucks before ever would spend 250 on a board, thank you for the fix
Thank you for this video! In mu case just soldering the relay helped. 15 minutes and my dryer works!
So helpful! Had the same error code and followed the steps and success! Saved me a ton of $$.
Thank you sir. You saved me $200 and several trips to the laundromat.
Awesome, so glad to have helped!
Apparently like many solder joints that fail, this one is common.
Had a similar issue with a Bosh dishwasher and an instrument cluster on a GMC. GMC I was able to resolder the joint and it works great. The dishwasher I had to replace the whole board as it caused other issues.
These joints failing in the same place on each dryer signals a bad solder joint from the factory process.
The problem was rooted to poor soldering. Whirlpool released a newer model control board to fix the bad soldering across the entire board as a replacement.
The reason it burned thru was because when the solder cracked it kept the power without relaying it to the next pin in logical sequence and likely the cause for the relay to break.
Also, to make it easier to get the control board out, I took off the entire metal plate it sits on and you'll see how the white shroud is attached to it to release it entirely. It made it easier for me to get the board off as my hands are not small.
Thanks for explaining and showing the replacement steps of the relay. I didn't think of trying it and only tried to resolder the pins.
No, it is caused by bad contacts on the relay. Relay replacement is the only permanent solution. ua-cam.com/video/aZWBjouDPuw/v-deo.html
Thank you so much, i had same excact issue with Whirpool Dryer, but different Model, i ordered the Relay from eBay, local stores sell it for 4 times more price and same waiting period
Thank you, I have the same dryer and this just happened this morning. I'm ordering the relay now.
It worked !! A big thank you ! FYI. Boards are now close to $400
Yea but on ebay or amazon theyre 110-250$
Wow !
When I removed de old relay I found that the copper from the board and the ring where the prong from relay is introduced were gone. The arc burned about 1/8 ~ 1/4 inch of the copper.
The solution was to use a regular copper wire that I pulled form an electrical cable and solder one end to the relay and the other end to the copper channel
My only concern is that the problem may occur again, but hey, you’re up and running and that’s the main thing. I originally tried just resoldering, but in my case it didn’t work. Thx.
Thanks to you James, I don’t have to buy my wife a new dryer!!!! Appreciate the video. Yeah!!!!
You’re very welcome, glad it helped!
q-tIp and alcohol to clean the black(carbon) off the board. Overall a really good video. thanks for the info.
I soldered it twice already in different pins. So just resoldering might just be temporary. Maybe next time I need to replace the relay.
My relay is still good...not much left in the way of solder on the bad pin...can I just simply resolder? Great video...thanks
Worth a shot!
Explained thoroughly, I appreciate this
Fixed it for just $9 + bought a new soldering kit which I am going to use for other projects.
Awesome thanks I'm doing that now just put in an order for a general purpose relay let's hope it works video was great thank you
Good luck!
@@jamesthompson9685 thank you! 👍
Why skip over the actual process of desoldering and resoldering the new relay on? Would be great to see that part.
I replaced relay and burn again what I need to test .? Thanks
Good stuff you get my subscribe Loyalty. I was able to fix it just by re-welded no need to chenge the relay 🤩🇲🇽🙏
Does it matter what gauge or type of soldering wire is used?
Thanks for the information snd help 🆘 have a good day
Just replaced few of them now I have one with Sanyou sla-s-112dmj-f-30. It does not say 12vdc or 24vdc. Wondering if they are interchangeable with omron gb8-1a4pacd or tyco t9as1d12-12
The clips push the connectors up. They dont hold them in place.
🤙🏻🤙🏻Thanks saved me about 200 bucks💪🏼💪🏼
Awesome! Glad to help!
Thank you very much for the video!
You said you were going to supply a link as to where you found the relay.
It’s at the bottom of the description, but here it is as well for you:

Could you share the specific Advice website where you found the relay switch? Please ☯️
Hi, the link is included at the bottom of the video description, I checked and it is still working/valid
I was looking for it through my phone and that's impossible with a Android. I broke out a old laptop opened up UA-cam and Bam 💥 Thank you your the Man❗
My board was burnt as well, i just soldered wire without changing the relay and dryer is working now
How long did the repair last? I'd expect the burn damage to the circuit board trace only gets worse with time. Eventually you may need to reinforce the trace (somehow).
Still going, had to replace the heater element most recently though (fairly simple, thankfully)
Just solder a wire parallel to the trace on the circuit board. Problem solved.
What type solder do you use?
I look online to order that relay I can't find it it's exactly the same dryer on the video I have and I have the same problem they're really is done if you don't mind to send me the link to order it I'd be happy thank you good video by the way
The link is at the bottom of the video description, but I will paste it here too:

GREAT INFORMATIVE VIDEO.....HOPE IT WORKS FOR ME TOO.!!
Hey Awesome DIY thanks
great video brother, how's it been doing ? mine went out the exact same way, sometimes shutoff mid cycle. popped when putting in a second load, took it apart & the relay went out just like that, just trying to figure out what led it to failure ?
Thank-you for your feedback. Installing the new relay has completely fixed the problem and our dryer has been going strong ever since. I believe these high voltage relays are prone to failure over time, as internally there is probably some sparking (which degrades the contacts) with every activation. Over time they simply wear out. So, if you replace the relay, you are solving the root cause of the problem. Good luck with your repair, please post any questions. Thanks again.
James - any need for concern about the wattage of the soldering iron used? Could I ruin the new relay with too powerful a iron?
Hi, I think as long as you are careful and you get the pin/pad just hot enough to take the solder, you’ll be ok. I had the same concern as I was doing mine and it worked out fine. My iron is just a cheap 40 watt model.
@@jamesthompson9685 thank you - i've ordered my relay this am but have to wait awhile for delivery. My dryer is not completely dead it will start , sometimes for 10 minutes or so before it cuts out and gives the F -01 code. So i'm still able to get by! Fingers crossed.
Hi thank for your demonstration, I have the same F01 error but I don't find any burn mark on the board, do you think it's the same solution ?
That’s a good question, I am honestly not sure what other board failures might cause the F01 error. If the error is popping up the same time as mine, I would think replacing the relay would be worth a try.
Thank you so much!... 🤩😀😊😊👍👍👍
I have the same dryer, but no lights come on at all...nothing. The thermo fuse is shot and one is in the way. No burns on the control board. I'm not sure which board would be at fault. Any ideas?
Sorry, I’m not sure either
can you test the relay to make sure that is the fix?
I’m not sure Kevin, probably there is a way (and a youtube video describing it). Good luck!
What is the meaning of F01?
I can only assume it relates to a demand for power not being met.
Anyone tell me the PN for relay for Amazon ?
I assume there’s a good reason the e-bay link in the video description is not an option for you? If you use amazon and search “omron relay g8p-1a4p” you will find some $20 (CAD) knock-off options that may work just fine.
You have a video about replacing a relay on a board. If somebody is watching a video about that but needs to know how to remove clips, they probably wont know what a relay even is.. no need to spend time to coach how to pull a clip off of a board... just saying..
Thanks for the gbu information snd help 🆘 have a good day
