Tomorrowland was so amazing back then. So much kinetic energy. Everything was in motion, Skyway, Peoplemover and the "Astro Orbiter" was were it belonged. It's like a kiddie ride now. Up another 50 feet made it much more of a thrill. Thanks for this vid!

This is Disneyland as it can never be again. I am glad I got to experience it in this form and I mourn for the future generations that will never get the chance.
This was the Disneyland I knew at 10 years old! The eighties were a magical decade at the Happiest Place on Earth. I imagine the footage was taken with one of those chunky camcorders?! Kudos to you for toting it around the park all day! No small feat.
I am grateful I got to see it as it was. Such a different energy back then. The park is so different these days. I miss the old school Disney feeling more every day.
As an 11 year old kid from Australia, i was lucky enough that my parents took me and my brother to Disneyland in 1988. I still remember how fun and memorable it was. I just visited Disneyland this time with my 10 year old son and wife. And we had a great time.
I am very happy you got to experience this back then! It was like a completely different park. Glad you were also able to come back and continue those memories. I really appreciate you watching and commenting- thank you!
So glad you had a wonderful time. I'm local and love meeting Australians at the park or vacationg in Los Angeles. You guys always bring the best vibes. Come back soon.
I’m a 2000s kid, in fact my parents would’ve been 18 in 1988, so I was not around when this video was shot. this doesn’t give a feeling of nostalgia, but rather… awe? it’s so cool seeing attractions I’m familiar with unchanged or similar to how they are now. those people, way back then experienced the same thing I’m able to experience today. some things have changed, yes, but it gives a sense of togetherness. thanks for the video.
I so miss late 80s/early 90s Disney. We’d always go in the October timeframe, so never a need for fast passes (good thing, because they didn’t have them yet 🙃). So much nostalgia!
I was 9 years old back in '88 but this is pretty much how I remember Disneyland too. My family only went once a year so it had been a big thing. I shake my head seeing that line for Star Tours as I remember seeing it in person at that time and how it took so long and seeing the posted signs of "One hour from this point" or something similar and bemoaning the wait. Then there had been the dinner's we would eat at that one place on Main Street. I can't recall the name but if I remember right it was towards the right side of Cinderella's Castle/Tomorrowland and it was a buffet like line. The Autopia in both Tomorrowland and Fantasyland were among my favorites and I loved going on the Monorail. For some reason the whole Mission to Mars thing terrified me even though we never went on it but I never liked the idea of going on it. Space Mountain was the other big line wait job and I remember thinking it was lucky if the line started just after going up that ramp. Of course leaving it my parents always had to steer me away from the arcade which I always attempted to make a beeline towards. The Skyway was odd as I was half terrified of being up high but still interested in seeing how the park looked from up there but I always found arriving at the stations fascination with that big rotating wheel pulling on the cables. Fun times and fun memories.
Oh man, I miss these days at Disneyland. I loved the skyway. It would always get me nervous when it would vibrate when it rolled thru the pillars😃 Thank you for the video
"Ladies and gentlemen, Disneyland has now ended its normal operating day. We hope you've enjoyed your visit to the Magic Kingdom and that you'll be back with us again soon . Drive carefully on your way home. Goodnight!" Man... 1988... I was 18 years old back then. This is the Disneyland I remember so fondly. Still irks me that Skyway and PeopleMover are gone. Those rides brought much-needed life and movement to the park. Tomorrowland is a shell of its former self today. Thanks so much for posting this video. Like and sub enthusiastically given!
My friends and I worked there in 1988. I worked in Tomorrowland at both the Star Trader and the Premiere Shop. The Premiere Shop is now the Buzz Lightyear ride.
I'm so happy this video was able to bring back the happy times you were there sharing magic with guests. I may have ran into you- haha! Thank you for watching. :)
@@TravelTowner they were in a store in Tomorrowland. Right in the area of the Buzz Lightyear ride. Right across from Star Tours. They were cool. I always remember (while they were still there) every time our family would visit Disney we’d go in and call at least one friend.
Oh such good memories. I lived 4 miles away and a basic pass was well worth getting. They were open till 1 am on Sunday nights all year so you could go ride everything. Seemed to be a little known fact so it wasn't crowded. Back then if you came late, the parking was clearing out and it was easy to park right by the entry gates. That Disneyland is gone forever but I'm grateful to have experienced it
I really miss the old hotel! The awesome front gift shop, monorail cafe, neon cactus, the remote control cars, the huge waterfall, the smaller pool in the back with the sandy beach, seaports of the pacific shops...
@thebluetarp: Yes, the old Disneyland Hotel was almost like a mini-Disneyland within itself! I LOVED being there! I still have a couple items I purchased at the Seaports Of The Pacific gift shop wharf. And when I have trouble falling asleep at night, I'll mentally see myself back there, walking around the Disneyland Hotel, or sitting on a little patio in front of The Bottle Shop, near the swimming pool, where I'd relax with lunch. That usually stills my mind to the point that I'll fall asleep.
@@D-FensDogG we stayed in the garden rooms quite often. And my wife and I even camped in a tent once at the Disney campground up the road. We were able to use all the hotel pools. Imagine tent camping at Disneyland! I actually have some cool photos of the construction of DCA from the upper floors of the adventure tower. They are actually on eBay right now as we speak.
@@thebluetarp That's pretty cool. Although I never stayed there, I distinctly recall the campground because I walked past it many times on my way to the hotel. . You may recall that when in line for that ride, they have a display that made it look like the folks going in had been reduced in size dramatically. When I was very young I asked my mom how the people got so small.
@@jeffdeutsch Yes I remember well. I was 11. The shrinking effect fooled me for a while, but I figured out the little figures were not real people. Either that or my dad told me. 1988. Vintage? Sheesh, thanks for making some of us feel old! And yes, I did get to visit Disneyland around that time. I was about 7 years old. Old enough to remember things but not old enough to appreciate the small details. See, back then Critter Country was known as".....zzzzzzzzz. "Where was I?"
Damn, when did everyone get so cynical? I loved the park back then and I love it now. My mom is 74 and we still visit a couple times a year. My 10 year old niece and 7 year old nephew love the park just as much as I did when I was a kid in the '70s and '80s.
I get it- there are plenty of things about Disney still to love. I think the increased pricing (way more than average inflation) and the separate nickel-and-diming that the company has implemented simply rub people the wrong way. Thanks so much for watching and commenting- I really appreciate it! :)
1988 is that year where . Mickey Mouse celebrates his 60th anniversary . Disney acquired Disneyland Hotel . America Sings closed for good in Tomorrowland and its animals were moved to the then upcoming Splash Mountain . Roger Rabbit appears in the fall of that year
I think this was the year I went with some cousins and we got to eat at club 33 and I remember Splash mountain in construction. I started going in the 60s so I was in my late 20s already. What wonderful time. Things are not thar great there today.
Great video! Love the background music. My first trip to Disneyland was in 1994 so a lot of this Disneyland was still there when I visited for the first time.. In 1996 I moved from Massachusetts to Los Angeles where I lived for 20 years before relocating back to MA in 2015. Although I get back to SoCal at least once a year with my daughters who were born in Los Angeles, I do miss being able to drive 30 minutes south for a visit whenever I wanted. Keep up the great work!
Thank you so much for your kind comments! I really appreciate that. Glad I was able to bring up some great memories. Thank you again for watching and commenting. :)
Very fun video I went there, same year, I was 7. Don't remember much but being put in Baby Jail hehe after I got misplaced from my parents. From this video it sure seems JUST AS BUSY as it is now. Still love going though

What a year! I was there and remember Star Tours the most, but also POTC when it wasn't infested with the movie and PC junk. Disneyland was a lot better then.
Too bad the kids of today will never get to experience how wonderful old Disneyland was I went there as a kid with my family and remember riding the old autopia cars and the motorboats the old Star tours etc never will be the same and all the young ones will never get to experience it like it was back then it was the best
I most probably was working Guest Control out of the Emporium for this MSEP. “If you’d like to watch the parade please move to the INSIDE of the ropes. We need to keep the sidewalk clear. Thank you!” 😜👍🏼😎
Lots of those people in the crowd may not be with us anymore, kids in the strollers are now in their upper 30's to early 40's and that place still looks the same.
back in 1988, we went to Walt Disney World in Florida which was interstine because the railroad at Magic kingdom they did Birthday express. I wish that they did Birthday express at Disneyland CA not just Florida.
Oh I don’t care either! I enjoyed the video all the same! I just love listing to the conversations and people watching. makes me feel like I’m actually there! And not to mention Disney’s classic background music always playing I miss the parks so much

I rode that old steam locomotive train a few years back for the first time and had never ridde it before...I swear I got the worst headache from the carbon monoxide poisoning in the tunnels LOL never again! 🚉 🤮 😷😮💨🥴
This was Disneyland at its best...it has only gone downhill since then. Furthermore, I believe this time slice of Disneyland is the epitome of Walt’s vision. Too bad wrong executives got into power to ruin it. The idea to build DCA was ludicrous (California within California???). I think most people would have preferred to just enlarge the park and keep one admission fee. Disney Corporation, “Tear Down that Berlin Wall”... in the central plaza and unite! What I would do (if I could): Re-build the Peoplemover to travel through the entire double park area, with off-on stations scattered in a few key locations. Build an elevated motorized walkway above the conjoined park, from Harbor Blvd with the admission gates, trams, and extending to Downtown Disney and hotels. It can be done, using some of Walt’s wisdom.
Disneyland today is certainly different than if Walt were still around, I imagine. It's always fun to imagine what the park might be like in way different scenarios. I hope you enjoyed the video... and i really appreciate your thoughts and comments! :)
This is amazing, I visited in 1990 so I remember this well. Mickey’s 60th Birthday float is amazing & I miss the Skyways. New subscriber here, I have a retro channel too ☺️
Great stuff. I was there the year before when they had the dance floor in the back where toon town is now. Would have been fun to see that but i get not having the vid cam back there cause parents would have freaked out. “Why is that grown man taping my daughter?” Kind of thing. Love seeing the vintage ride setups. Rip people mover California. I agree with others too. For non digital, i cant believe how well this held up! Was source on betamax. Or 4mm? Too good to be vhs

1988. Vintage? Sheesh, thanks for making some of us feel old! And yes, I did get to visit Disneyland around that time. I was about 7 years old. Old enough to remember things but not old enough to appreciate the small details. See, back then Critter Country was known as".....zzzzzzzzz. "Where was I?"
Haha I get it! And I'm right there with ya!
This was peak Disneyland. Great vid, man. Thanks for the memories.
You are not kidding my friend! Happy the video was able to give you the good feels. Thank you for watching and commenting. :)
10:51 what’s Donald doing up there lol where’s Mickey
The 5 Characters who were of my highest priority at that time.
Minnie > Aurora > Alice > Mary Poppins > Wendy
Always a fun time meeting characters- especially the rare ones! Thank you for watching!
1988 is that year where
. Mickey Mouse celebrates his 60th anniversary
. Disney acquired Disneyland Hotel
. America Sings closed for good in Tomorrowland and its animals were moved to the then upcoming Splash Mountain
. Roger Rabbit appears in the fall of that year
It was quite an amazing time back then. Thank you so much for watching and commenting!
I think this was the year I went with some cousins and we got to eat at club 33 and I remember Splash mountain in construction. I started going in the 60s so I was in my late 20s already. What wonderful time. Things are not thar great there today.
Such great memories! I'm so glad you watch and commented- I really appreciate it. Thank you! :)
Wonderful. ..Thanks for posting!❤
So glad you enjoyed it. I really appreciate you watching and commenting!
Very fun video I went there, same year, I was 7. Don't remember much but being put in Baby Jail hehe after I got misplaced from my parents. From this video it sure seems JUST AS BUSY as it is now. Still love going though
It's a different vibe now... but YES the crowds are still maddening! Thank you so much for watching and commenting!
They didn't have those horse drawn trolleys when I went there in May 8th 2023.
I beleive they are seasonal and only operate in the mornings... anyone know more?
I miss the old Disneyland less dark 🧐
This is the year I was born! Yay! So cool
Glad this was able to take you "back in time" Thank you for watching and commenting!
I remember loving the Arcade in the Contemporary. Size of Walmart. My fav hotel.
What a great memory- thank you for watching and commenting... I really appreciate it!
I wasn't even born yet when this was made
Well then, I am glad you are able to see what it was like before you arrived- haha! Thanks so much for watching and commenting, I really appreciate it. :)
What a year! I was there and remember Star Tours the most, but also POTC when it wasn't infested with the movie and PC junk. Disneyland was a lot better then.
So glad this video was able to bring back those great memories for you. Thank you for watching- I really appreciate it! :)
7:48 I remember spending many a morning before the park opened at the Indian Village with a radio keeping a lookout on the canoe races.
Sounds like a great memory- thank you for sharing!
Too bad the kids of today will never get to experience how wonderful old Disneyland was I went there as a kid with my family and remember riding the old autopia cars and the motorboats the old Star tours etc never will be the same and all the young ones will never get to experience it like it was back then it was the best
It was truly amazing, right? We were lucky to live thorough it for sure! Thank you for watching and commenting, I really appreciate it.
disney now charges $12 to $18 for one fing ballon Let that sink in
We took our kids there in 1981. We were bored out of our minds. Have never gone back.
That's a bummer that it did not live up to your expectations. Thank you for watching... I appreciate it! :)
Vell... I guess zehr ist just no pleasink some peoples!
I was 8! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for watching- I really appreciate it! :)
Thanks for sharing, I was six years old in 1988 🙂
So glad you enjoyed watching and thank you for commenting- i really appreciate it! :)
@@TravelTowner Your welcome
I most probably was working Guest Control out of the Emporium for this MSEP.
“If you’d like to watch the parade please move to the INSIDE of the ropes. We need to keep the sidewalk clear. Thank you!” 😜👍🏼😎
So true! Thank you for watching and commenting- I really appreciate that!
The simple times! The Better times! The affordable times 💯💯💯✅️✅️✅️
You got that right! Mostly about MORE AFFORDABLE. HaHa. Thank you for watching and commenting- I really appreciate it!
I wonder when this was taken. My husband and I were there in August of 88. The 80's were a wonderful time.
This was June of 1988. :)
I was there in May of '88
For a home video I really have to commend you on your camera work.
I certainly appreciate that- however this was put through a video stabilizer... haha! Thank you for watching and commenting. :)
@@TravelTowner Even still the overall framing is pretty decent. I wish I could have gone there.
YES! Great footage!
@@pault5557 Thank you- I appreciate that! :)
First time I wen to Disneyland was when I was 7 in '87 - remember all of this
Great memories to have and keep! Thank you for commenting!
Man I miss when my mom took me to disnseyland in 1989 I miss it
No kidding, right!? Great days back then. Thank you so much for watching and commenting. I really appreciate it!
I was about 22.
If we could only go back and re-live those fun times. I am happy you enjoyed the video. 😀😀
Disney is the Best
Glad you liked it- Hope you enjoyed the vintage footage!
Lots of those people in the crowd may not be with us anymore, kids in the strollers are now in their upper 30's to early 40's and that place still looks the same.
That's the weird thing to think about for sure! Thank you for watching!
July 1988 was the last time i visited Disneyland.
I'm glad it i a good memory for you! Thank you for watching and commenting- I really appreciate it.
So sad that Splash Mountain went away. I am sure the newer version will be good, but I will miss the OG too!
Truth to that. You could always go to Tokyo Disneyland- it is still there! Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
back in 1988, we went to Walt Disney World in Florida which was interstine because the railroad at Magic kingdom they did Birthday express. I wish that they did Birthday express at Disneyland CA not just Florida.
I remember that!
Daughter fav is Splash Mountain, she was shocked it was an original Disneyland ride. Very sad they are changing it...
Yes it appeared in Disneyland way back in 1989. It opened in the Magic Kingdom in the early 90's. Thank you for watching and commenting! :)
❤
Thank you!
8:40 Squirt doesn’t have the water marks like he does now! Lookin good Squirt 🐘
Love that! :)
Awesome video!
Thanks so much for watching and commenting. I really appreciate it! :)
No worries.. I spent a lot of time at Disneyland in the late 80's/early 90's. It was a lot of fun to watch..
It would be cool to hear the original audio of the videos. I love Disneyland background music and noise.
I'd love to have it, too! The original audio here was just too low quality (static, etc). Thank you for watching and hope you enjoy more. :)
@@TravelTowner - We wouldn't have cared.
Oh I don’t care either! I enjoyed the video all the same! I just love listing to the conversations and people watching. makes me feel like I’m actually there! And not to mention Disney’s classic background music always playing I miss the parks so much
@@emmaann7602 - I was just trying to point out to Travel Towner that we wouldn't have cared if the audio was "low quality" or "static-y". We like listening to original audio regardless
@@emmaann7602 Thank you for that comment- unfortunately there was so much static and audio "screeching" that it was unusable. I really hope you enjoyed the video- thank you!
I was 7 at the time. Disneyland has surely changed over time. Not sure if it’s for the better or worse?
some better- some worse. Back then there was no nickel-and-diming the guests for sure.
I rode that old steam locomotive train a few years back for the first time and had never ridde it before...I swear I got the worst headache from the carbon monoxide poisoning in the tunnels LOL never again! 🚉 🤮 😷😮💨🥴
😂😂
1988 was a dark year for Disneyland since America Sings had just closed that year.
I never got a chance to see America Sings... 😢 Thank you for watching!
Damn. I graduated high school in 1988. I dont consider 80s Disney vintage by any means. 50s 60s and maybe 70s. But not 80s. Im sooo offended 😂
I know, right!? Hard to believe the 80s were so long ago. Thank you so much for watchoing and commenting! :)
In 88 I could see it all in one day!
No doubt, right?!? Thank you for watching! :)
nice
Thank you!
2 people were fans of the "Tiki Room Under New Management"
Haha! I totally get that! :)
What I would do (if I could):
Re-build the Peoplemover to travel through the entire double park area, with off-on stations scattered in a few key locations.
Do you have a version of this without the goofy/way-too-loud music? I'd like to hear some of the sound effects from back then.
Sorry- much of the older VHS tape had an annoying buzz in the audio... tried to cover it up. Hope you enjoyed nonetheless!
thats when they replaced the Mark 3 Monorail trainset for the mark 5.
and now - those are barely holding together. Thank you for watching and commenting! :)
This is amazing, I visited in 1990 so I remember this well. Mickey’s 60th Birthday float is amazing & I miss the Skyways.
New subscriber here, I have a retro channel too ☺️
So glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for watching and commenting- I really appreciate that. :)
I went to rides and sights in about the same order as the video.
Glad you had a similar experience! Thank you for commenting and I hope you enjoy all the videos here! :)
Thank you for commenting! This was- believe it or not- S-VHS. So a tiny bit "step up" from VHS. BUT- it has been stabilized and upgraded (as best it could be) when digitized. So glad you enjoyed it- thank you! :)
Videopolis is still there in 88. Technically it's still there in 2021, as the Fantasyland Theatre. But it was still the dance club in 88.
@@thescott7539 Ahh- videopolis. What great memories. Thank you for commenting!
