1:15 Notice how Todd's footprints begin when he gets off Bojack? That means he's been carried for a little while, not just to see the fireworks in that spot lol Small detail, but I found it cute
It makes me hopeful about Todd and Bojack's friendship, actually! And it actually goes much further: It starts with just Bojack's footprints. Todd is being carried along. It takes a struggle and a great fall from Bojack's shoulders for Todd to land on his two feet. From there on out, their paths diverge, Bojack running further and further ahead (away). Todd catches up though, with big, confident leaps. And with a Hokey Pokey, Todd turns their paths around, spinning into both of their footprints until you can't tell which ones are the ones coming in, and which ones are the ones heading out. They're in the same place and in the same mess, with Todd adjacent to Bojack; considerably even ahead of him, if you look at it a certain way. A wave comes in and washes all previous footpaths away. None of it, not even your past, really matters, does it?
I like after the footprints gets separated, Todd decides to turn around like the song says and keeps close to bojack no longer to be on his back again but at his side
Lol y’all take the bad from Todd’s character instead of the good, seriously? Mooch or not, he proves himself throughout the show, did more than most, and in all honesty out of all the character created inside the show, Todd is probably the most balanced of them all.
@@daniapfel2825 one of the most useful things I’ve learned about forgiveness is that you don’t have to absolve someone of a past wrongdoing in order to forgive them; forgiveness is a matter of foregoing your desire for revenge, it’s as good for the forgiver as it is for the forgivee. Todd never wanted Bojack to be harmed or “punished” he just wanted Bojack to get better and be better
I've been rewatching the series from the beginning and seeing the contrast on how Bojack and Todd talk to each other. The way Bojack is actually listening to him and taking in his advice, even though he playfully calls Todd stupid in the end. Season 1 Bojack would've meant it, there would've been malice. Seeing that growth right off the bat is incredible.
It's tough for me to re-watch this show, but it undoubtedly impacted me and my feelings as I watched it through its entirety. Maybe because of how existential it is.. I have epilepsy, and this show would sometimes give me deep thoughts which led to realizations that sometimes scared me and led to seizures due to the high level of anxiety. That wouldn't be the case today, but I just feel like the show's been watched. Wrapped in a neat, perfect little package that needs no more investigation. But I am SO grateful for the genius of Ralph. The art this show presents is downright breathtaking.
This last episode was so bittersweet. I cried at the end of this scene. I cried out of happiness, I was so happy that after all they've been through, bojack and Todd remain friends. And I cried because we won't see them again. However, it was nice while it lasted.
samuel hadjaissa actually I think they never talk to eachother again after that, bojack says “What if this is the last time we ever talked” humorously and Diane kinda just awkwardly smiled

honestly, "isnt the point of art less what people put into it and more what you get out of it" really resonates with me and genuinely changed my perspective on alot of art
The part when he said "that's why it's called Art" always confused me, I tried to analyze it right now and this is what I got from that: When he talk about his mother "...I did? or she did? or we... «are»" Connects with the part about Art "... Or maybe art doesn't need a point, maybe that's why is called «Art»" The word "art" is the ancient form of "are" Example: Art thou / are you *_It's Art because it IS_* Or that's what I got from Todd's strange phrasing, it's the only interpretation I could came across and I don't know if it's intended, but isn't Art what you get out of it?
When BoJack says, "What if I relapse again?" and Todd replies, "Then you'll get sober again," the water starts to get closer, and by the end of the scene the water wipes away completely the footsteps they left on the beach. When all the footsteps do go, they both agree that it was "nice while it lasted." The footsteps are metaphoric of Bojack's worry; he might just relapse again, but if he does, and all his progress is wiped away-his footsteps on the long, arduous journey of sobriety-then he just starts again.
a lot of people in the comments are saying that Bojack and Todd's friendship can never go back to how it was when they were living together. I agree with the sentiment, but I also think it's kind of backwards. To me, this scene is the strongest, purest, most real example of their friendship in the entire show. Bojack seemingly DESPISED Todd when they first lived together, and Todd was totally dependant on Bojack to keep a roof over his head. Their relationship never goes back, and thats a brilliant thing because Bojack learns to care for others and Todd learns to care for himself

I think they are going to stay friends. Not as close as they were when Todd lived at bojacks house but still. I think both of them grew from their mistakes and have a lot more healthy relationship
I think they'll be even closer than the begining. This might actually be the start of a genuine friendship between them. Bojack was really mean to Todd when they lived together, but now they're talking to each other like.. people. I think it's the start of their friendship, and this alone makes me so happy with the ending.
@@kayturs honestly I really wanted their relationship to be like before and them separating was hard to see but it seems they'll slowly be back to being close or even closer than before
@@kayturs This. Being literally close is not the same as actually being close. I have a friend and we rarely see each other, but the moment we're in the room together it's fun and stuff can get real. We are opposites on a lot of opinions too but that always fades away in mutual understanding.
I love how after Bojack told Todd about how he's not doing big improvements but is "staying out of trouble at least", Todd still is happy for him, saying "Hooray! Staying out of trouble at least!" This is important to me because it shows that when you suffer from things like depression, PTSD, anxiety, take your pick, it's hard to make big improvements and recovery is long and hard, but just being able to do little things, like get out of bed in the morning, fix a good breakfast, taking a shower can be seen as an accomplishment, because at least you got something done, and that's important in the process of healing. Even little things like "staying out of trouble at least" can be an outstanding achievement.
1:07 I know this video is four years old, but I just noticed that Todd’s footprints pause, then catch back up with BoJack, showing the time he left and drawing attention to the space between their paths, where Todd leaves BoJack’s. I dunno, I just feel like someone on the storyboard team felt really clever for this bit, and then no one noticed. 😅
You do the hokey pokey, and you turn yourself around. You turn yourself around... THAT's what it's all about. Only a show like Bojack could turn a nursery rhyme into a powerful life philosophy
"You just seemed really overwhelmed at the party and thought you could use some air" Just shows that Todd's level of empathy and EQ. We all need a Todd in our life.
this show was so fucking special. a lot of people are bojack, a lot of people are todd, a lot of people are diane, a lot of people are princess carolyn, and a lot of people are somewhere in between.
“What if I relapse again?” “Then you’ll get sober again.” Bojack’s defeated sigh is so good at conveying just how hard it is to want to get better. I firmly believe in the saying “once an addict, always an addict”, in that we never really get over our addictions, we just learn how to give them up, but we always suffer the risk of relapse. This show was such a masterpiece, to convey the intricacies of giving up addiction in something as simple as an exasperated sigh during a conversation between friends
While the pun is top notch, imagine one of the writers actively listening to the Hokey Pokey and thinking "Wait, is the "that" referring to the Hokey Pokey part, or the turning yourself around part?!", and working that into the philosophy of the series finale. That's some thought process!
This scene marks a huge turning point for Bojack. Before, he would usually shut Todd down when he talked about something difficult in his life and wouldn’t ask additional questions. But Bojack seemed interested in what Todd was going through with his mother
Everyone dissecting everything from what they say to the littles details in the background is the purest source of information about growth and that's what makes a show memorable, good on you all
I like how Todd grew and his relationship with Bojack. When Bojack was showing toxic behavior before the interview, he said "You're just like the old Bojack. I like this new Bojack! Call me again when the new one is back." And here the new Bojack returned and Todd came back to him. It's a really nice thing. Bojack really has a good friend there and hopefully he'll one day see it and treat him better.
I am struggling with self harm and today I relapsed after a year or so. "then you will get sober again" is such a simple statement with so, so much power.
Yup and even King of the Hill, Futurama, My Little Pony FIM, Regular Show etc. all earned their endings eh and glad they with Bojack didn't drag on and on to become a stale puppeted Weekend at Bernies style corpse like The Simpsons, Spongebob and Family Guy?
“Oh, you just seemed really overwhelmed at the party and i thought you could use some air.” This part of the scene always gets me. How Todd always seems to notice the smallest things about people and tries to act on those. Sometimes it’s just all about the small things and the people who notice. I wish i had someone like Todd..
Not many people talk about the line about Todd and his mother's relationship, I always find it so hopeful. Bojack: So what changed? Todd: I don't know, I did, or she did, or we... are?
@@adannajera250 Bojack was out of prison for one day to attend the "industry wedding". Princess Carolyn was already married, in a much smaller private wedding with friends and family.

Rewatching this after months, i just can't shake the feeling, even if it's not true, that "it was nice while it lasted" is directed to the audience, writers, creators and to everyone involved in the show. It makes me feel sad even more, knowking that the show was canceled by netflix, and wasn't in the creators intentions.
@@VegetableVendetta the show was political from the start and made it pretty clear where its beliefs lie in the first season itself also there is nothing wrong with being "political"
@@VegetableVendettaJust saying, life IS politics. Bojack horseman is no different. Choosing not to be interested in politics is like saying "Yeah I actively don't care enough about my neighbors to improve their lives. I only care if it affects me" Not saying politics should be every discussion. Just actively being aware of issues is a great start. I think Bojack did a great episode when they satirized the fracking industry, even if I didn't have any personal opinions about fracking.
To be fair, Bojack Horseman ended up getting some pretty special treatment in this regard. Waksberg said that he wanted some sort of heads-up from Netflix when the show was going to end, rather than just being asked to produce season after season and risk suddenly getting the story cut off. Netflix actually obliged with this, and before Season 6 started production they basically told him "You know that heads-up you wanted so you could properly end the story? Well, here's that heads up." So the writers and creators were able to work with Season 6 knowing that they needed to end the story and tie up the plot lines as best as they could.
Todd's understanding of the Hoki Poki is what is called "The Death of the Author". Basically, Todd believes that the initial meaning of the art doesn't actually matter. What matters is what the viewer gets from it. This is a quite controversial idea in art. It basically says that creators have no ownership over what anything in their work means.
Look at the paintings from Da Vinci, or the movies from Kubrik Most long lasting art outlast their creator. When it is done, what viewpoint can they bring on it ? All that remains is the art itself and what people get from it.
It's not that controversial. I subscribe to the idea of the death of the author and I attempt to create my art that way. It's free to interpret or whatever anyone wants to do with it. What I think or how I feel about it doesn't matter anymore the moment I release my work into the world. It sort of becomes of everyone. Furthermore that's how abstract art really comes into it's own, when the artist no longer "owns" it. If artists are willing to sell their work, they are willing to part with what is theirs. It's literally like selling your babies. So I generally would prefer to share my art for free, or maybe trade it for anything but money. I don't think I want people to make money off of it.
I wouldn't say they have no ownership though. I think it would be more correct to say they have less control about the interpretation their work may get. As an author, writter or whatever, you might get a message across. A feeling, an idea, a situation. But you must know that people may interpret it in a completely different way than you intended. They have had other experiences and other beliefs that may affect the way they see what you have created. And that's the magical thing about art: no one will get the same out of it.
“Isn’t the point of art less what people put into it and more what people get out of it” amazing little pieces of commentary like this is what makes this show one of the greatest shows of all time.
Todd has come such a long way; he’s such an important, powerful character. It’s so great to see healthy boundaries in place and understanding that sometimes, it’s better to love from a distance.
There are so many little details in this show that you just can't catch them all the first time you watch it. For instance, I've seen it several times and I only just now realized the significance of the waves washing away their footprints.
Man....these characters, these stories are so human....I’ve been struggling with so much recently, am addicted to drugs and was recently hospitalized because of it, funny enough I had quit before.... I relapsed and it nearly cost me everything...... it hurts me to the core when bojack talks about how he fears he could slip up again, I fear I could slip up again....but when Todd tells him that he will “get sober again” and that “everyday he will set a new record for being sobor”.... well I know it’s a show and it’s a convo between two established characters with their own context....but somewhere deep down it feels like he talking to me....and when am scared I be nothing more then a drugged out failure, I watch this little clip.....and I don’t feel quite as scared anymore..... I really did get a lot from this show, it truly was heartfelt.
It's absolutely valid for you to feel talked to. Art doesn't exist in a vacuum. Like Todd says, it's about what people get out of it. When a team makes a series like Bojack, they don't do it just to tell the story, but for the story to be heard. I hope that the show can keep giving you something you need for years to come. I know that I personally keep looking back at Diane and her struggle with "good and bad damage" the arc where she struggles to write her book.... As a depressed writer, I absolutely feel personally addressed here as well
I just realized; no Todd is not intelligent or clever... he is very mature, he grew up in maturity during seasons and seasons and that's why I love him
I feel like the footprints being washed away by the waves are showing Bojack leaving the past behind him now. It's like the past is gone, and the only thing that remains are the footprints he made while he's standing in that one spot. Then again i could be looking too much into this one.
No no, never think it’s stupid to analyse small things. Sometimes, they can tell you so so much. The fact a peice of art can give you that much to think about is incredible, and I don’t believe the idea that you can “read too much” into things
I love how at the end of the scene waves clear Bojack and Todd's footprints, like they can start their friendship from scratch. It makes sense since their dialog was about turning yourself around
Most underrated part of this whole scene is that when Todd says ‘it was nice while it lasted’ the footprints then get washed away, to symbolise that the moment they shared was nice but now it’s gone. Just like how Todd enjoyed the time he spent with Bojack, but it’s gone now. Truly beautiful.
Though it doesn’t seem as prominent, Todd had extreme character development while still remaining “Todd”. He is such a beautiful example of healthy optimism
“You do the Hockey Pockey and you turn yourself around-you _turn_ _yourself_ around. That’s what it’s all about.” I swear, every time I’ve felt resentment towards myself for failing in something, I repeat these words in my head. Just turn yourself around and start over again. Because that’s what it’s all about.
You know I think Todd is the one who has the most healthy attitude around Bojack : he doesn't let him down but he knows when it gets toxic and when he should take his distance.
this made me cry more than any other moment in this finale haha,,, Todd was probably the most consistently best character throughout the show and this is a wonderful, heartfelt conclusion with them
I kept thinking, "it was nice while it lasted" when he was talking to Diane 💔 I mean, they met at the beginning of the series, and the friendship ended at the end.
It's been over a year since I watched this episode. The part about the Hokey Pokey has stayed with me since I saw this episode. I guess you can say I did the hokey pokey and I turned myself around after seeing this. Man, I miss this show.
Bojack did horrible things, he hurt people in a way that is probably unforgivable. But he keeps on living, people, even those that hurt others keep on living, and as they keep on living, they still need people around them. It's normal and justifiable that some people pushed Bojack away from their lives after what he did, but it's also normal that some will allow him to still be a small part of their lives. Not because they forgive what he did, but because they know that he is still a person, that can try and be better, and needs people around him to make himself better. I am so happy that in some way Todd is still one of those people, Bojack does not deserve him, but he still needs him. This show changed a lot about how I feel about redemption and forgiveness.
The fact that the waves wash away the footprints in the sand representing that there is nothing to look back on and there is only where they are now in the moment that matters. "It was nice while it lasted"
Todd is carried by BoJack so it starts out as only BoJacks footprints then he gets down and makes his own and then they all get washed away when he says “it was nice while it lasted”. Todd started the show being carried by BoJack, sleeping on his couch and having less of his own things to do, then he became independent and split off from BoJack. Then in the end, their past together gets washed away
SOME of the footprints are washed away, but there are new footprints. Todd is carried by Bojack, they're side-by-side, the footprints get jumbled, those get washed away, but there are new ones.

Think about it, all the wacky shit Todd says, for all we know, ALL of that could be references to actual stuff that has happened to him and we [and the characters he's talking to] just think he's being wacky, lol
I like how they reference something so unabashedly ridiculous and silly in such a grounded moment.
Good to know I was t the only one that forgot that the first time around
It’s a great reminder that the show used to be much goofier. Yes, the series always mixed wacky comedy with heartbreaking drama, but seasons 1-3 were generally a lot more off the wall, while seasons 4-6 felt a bit more grounded in the serious side of things.
Aaron Paul is so good. It’s insane.
My question may be a little bit amateur, but...are the animations done first or the setting of voices? Do you know?

Did you just comment on every bojack video or?
1:15 Notice how Todd's footprints begin when he gets off Bojack? That means he's been carried for a little while, not just to see the fireworks in that spot lol Small detail, but I found it cute
That's cool! I didn't notice that bit.
It makes me hopeful about Todd and Bojack's friendship, actually! And it actually goes much further:
It starts with just Bojack's footprints.

Bojack never treated Todd like a genuine person back in the early seasons. On the other hand, Todd was stupid too.
BoJack hasn't said the line, "Shut up, Todd!", in 4 years.

The hokey pokey part of this dialogue is honestly so underrated
honestly, "isnt the point of art less what people put into it and more what you get out of it" really resonates with me and genuinely changed my perspective on alot of art
The part when he said "that's why it's called Art" always confused me, I tried to analyze it right now and this is what I got from that:
When he talk about his mother "...I did? or she did? or we... «are»"
Connects with the part about Art
"... Or maybe art doesn't need a point, maybe that's why is called «Art»"
The word "art" is the ancient form of "are"
Example: Art thou / are you
*_It's Art because it IS_*
Or that's what I got from Todd's strange phrasing, it's the only interpretation I could came across and I don't know if it's intended, but isn't Art what you get out of it?

When BoJack says, "What if I relapse again?" and Todd replies, "Then you'll get sober again," the water starts to get closer, and by the end of the scene the water wipes away completely the footsteps they left on the beach. When all the footsteps do go, they both agree that it was "nice while it lasted."
The footsteps are metaphoric of Bojack's worry; he might just relapse again, but if he does, and all his progress is wiped away-his footsteps on the long, arduous journey of sobriety-then he just starts again.

a lot of people in the comments are saying that Bojack and Todd's friendship can never go back to how it was when they were living together.
I love this perspective regarding the characters. They, as Todd stated, "Turned themselves around."
Yeah, BoJack didn't ruin a good relationship, Todd realized what a bad relationship it had always been.

I love how after Bojack told Todd about how he's not doing big improvements but is "staying out of trouble at least", Todd still is happy for him, saying "Hooray! Staying out of trouble at least!"
This is important to me because it shows that when you suffer from things like depression, PTSD, anxiety, take your pick, it's hard to make big improvements and recovery is long and hard, but just being able to do little things, like get out of bed in the morning, fix a good breakfast, taking a shower can be seen as an accomplishment, because at least you got something done, and that's important in the process of healing. Bojack’s defeated sigh is so good at conveying just how hard it is to want to get better.
Todd : theres too much emphasis on the hokey pokey part

While the pun is top notch, imagine one of the writers actively listening to the Hokey Pokey and thinking "Wait, is the "that" referring to the Hokey Pokey part, or the turning yourself around part?!", and working that into the philosophy of the series finale. That's some thought process!

Not saying politics should be every discussion.
Well, here's that heads up."
So the writers and creators were able to work with Season 6 knowing that they needed to end the story and tie up the plot lines as best as they could.
I think I agree with Todd on this one
Look at the paintings from Da Vinci, or the movies from Kubrik
Most long lasting art outlast their creator.
And that's when Todd lost what he had going there, as BoJack put it. Death of the Author is hogwash.
And it also doubles as a Hokey Pokey joke - "You _put your left hand in,_ you _get your left hand out."_
The hokey pokey “turning around” thing is still blowing my mind a bit. I freakin love Todd!!!
"I can't tell if you're being smart or stupid."
As a depressed writer, I absolutely feel personally addressed here as well
I just realized; no Todd is not intelligent or clever... he is very mature, he grew up in maturity during seasons and seasons and that's why I love him
0:28 I like how they finally acknowledge that Todd has, in fact, comitted a federal crime
The footprints disappearing due to the ocean after they said it was nice while it lasted was another great touch

I feel like the footprints being washed away by the waves are showing Bojack leaving the past behind him now. It's like the past is gone, and the only thing that remains are the footprints he made while he's standing in that one spot. Then again i could be looking too much into this one.
At least this show is very rewarding when you do look into things like that.
Todd and Bojack has my favorite dynamic in the show.

Word to live by
For the memory of someone ❤
Todd is when you rolled low for wisdom but always seems to nail your checks.

Ive just chosen to close that chapter in my life and seeing what can i accomplish alone in this life...but...it was nice, while it lasted.
Sorry :(
I like how the footprints wash away at the end to show how this is a new beginning for bojack.
I love the visual of them walking, making footprints in the sand, and then the footprints being washed out by the tide.
