  • Negative or 'Reverse' LCD displays are very popular across the digital watches on offer today, but are they better than the more traditional standard LCD?
I thought I would measure the actual viewing angles and find out which wins for legibility and clarity, and by how much.
    Watches tested here are -
    CASIO G-Shock GW-B5600BC-1BER
    CASIO G-Shock GW-M5610-1ER
Here is the link to the GWB G-Shock (my pic for most features for least cost) • G-Shock GW-B5600BC = M...

The tilt viewing angle is the most important but they always show just a left right pan in the adverts online. Ive been disappointed several times by watches that need a precise wrist rotation to view the time, usually due to the display but sometimes also due to a very recessed face with a protective ridge around it. Always preferred positive and now I have the science to back it up. Great video.

I only have one negative display watch, and it's a customization I did myself in about 15 minutes or so. It's on a base model G-Square, the DW5600. While the bezel was off, I decided to also remove its white print and I swapped out the chrome buckle and tongue with a black set.
Personally, I love how it turned out, and it had exactly zero learning curve.
While I was lining up my polarizing film, I found the point where it was in negative and had the brightest segments, then I backed it off a few degrees to darken the segments a little. If I thought for one second that I could do it successfully, I would replace the chrome pushers with black ones, but I already know that I don't have the manual dexterity or the patience for that level of detail. I'm pretty sure I could remove the E-clips and replace the pushers, but there's no way I'd be able to reseat the clips. I decided to leave the lettering under the crystal alone. After I had everything reassembled, I installed a black JaysAndKays BullBar.
Again, I love how it turned out, and it gets more wrist time than all of my other watches combined.

f2013 I only handled the high end metal in the shop. So only a half decent idea of the difference. They are clearer (on the slightly different module) but it’s still a LCD. And I think the fundamental issue with negatives is the light shining through to the backplate.
With negatives the “window” or gap, is always going to be smaller. So less light gets through to reflect back and to give contrast.
So unless it’s got a permanent back light this is always going to favour the standard LCD. (For contrast and clarity.)

It has to be said that Timex has got extremely wider view angles. I don't know if they set a task to achieve those angles but it's stunning how far they gone with it. At least on their Shock series with positive display.

I notice you failed to do a low light test. The angles are important, but how visible the screen is during different lighting conditions is for more relevant imo. You can control the angles since the watch is on your wrist, but you cant always control the lighting conditions. I understand there is a backlight, but it is not impossible to find yourself in a situation where using the backlight would be inconvenient or possibly even dangerous if you are law enforcement or military.

    • @biscuitsalive
      @biscuitsalive  4 роки тому

Yep I agree. That would have been useful.
The visibility is easier in low light with a standard display.
But of course in very low light you have the backlight. Which then levels the playing field.
Remember both those specific watches have an “autolight” function, so the back light comes on automatically when you tilt wrist in dark conditions.

In theory, negative looks cooler to me. But in practice it's much worse performance.
Casio fixed this with the newer Casio (GBD 200) which has much more powerful readability on black screen.

04:57 you can change the amount of time the light stays on. I believe it is by holding the "LIGHT" button for a few seconds.

Thanks for sharing with us the experiment results. I did a test myself because there is a newly released casio watch AE-1500WH-1A vs AE-1500WH-8B and I like to find out how negative display fair during low light condition. I workout in a stadium around 5 plus in the morning hence there isn't much lightning until 6:30am. Also I ended my workout around 9am hence under bright sunshine positive display fair better, and some workouts like when doing plank exercise, I need to view the watch at an angle Hence I guess AE-1500WH-1A will be the right choice for me.

The GBX100 has an amazingly clear legible screen.
      (New MIP technology)
I don’t like the style as much as the classic square. But it’s super practical-

That’s really helpful. Maybe it’s just my wrist but I find it quite a strain to tilt my wrist far enough for me to look directly at the watch face so it’s important to me that I be able to read the screen at about a 45° tilt

      A couple of questions:
Is there a difference in the length of the battery life?
When the battery dies on the (or is removed) on the negative watch, is the display all dark or all light?
