Oliver Anthony Music - Ole Red (Live From The Coal Mines)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 лют 2025
- We were recently able to come pay our respects to a great crew of underground coal miners in Iaeger, WV. Billy Contreras, one of the world's best fiddle players, was also able to be a part of these recordings of “Ole Red” and several other new original songs we played for the miners.
This song was originally written by James "Bo" Bohan, Don Goodman, and Mark Sherrill. It was first recorded by George Jones for his 1990 album You Oughta Be Here with Me.
Don Goodman is one of my favorites, and Billy Contreras on the fiddle used to tour with George Jones. I felt like this would be a perfect cover to do while we were down in the mine for the Dick Clarke New Year's Eve session.
This was an active mine and we were required to wear the hard hats. Yes, I do have a big head. Lol
I appreciate all the support. Talk to you soon.
Sounds great!
But you do it 3 times better.. I'm from Alabama where the Fort Payne band lives. I've been playing music over 50 years. And you are great! You are welcome to come here anytime. My neighbor. Retired from music and has a 5 year old recording studio if you ever want to look into it. Something for you to think about. But anyway keep up the great work you and your friends may choose. It's not the same studio that the Alabama band used. It's Much better. And it's only a block from where I live. 😊 ..
Wow...executed with perfection. Thank you sir🫡
So you are still stealing my life story A
A.I. clone
You know why I like you and support your music? It’s not because you can sing, play the guitar like no other, or come up with great songs. There are plenty of other artists that can do that too. It’s because you stayed true to who you are and didn’t sell out for the almighty dollar. Just like almost every single person has in the music industry.
There are a myriad of artist that haven't sold out. It reminds me of a story. When the Clash were accused of "selling out," Mick Jones replied, "I'm pretty sure a sell out is when there are no more tickets."
Being poor doesn’t make you any better of a person than a rich person. Wealth only amplifies the affect you can have on the world around you. A good person with means can make much more of a difference than a good person with nothing. Think of the parable of the Good Samaritan, there wouldn’t have been a story had the man not had enough wealth to share with the travelers.
@@Andrew-cs1td The Good Samaritan was amazing because in those times if you helped out a criminal you suffered the same fate as them so helping someone you didn't know was very risky. You were putting your life on the line helping someone you didn't know. That's why it's such a good story. They put their faith in that helping someone was better than not. Money is corruption. I'd stay "poor" and do things and I think that would carry a lot more "weight" than doing things with money that never works. Look at Mother Teresa? I respect Chris a lot for not signing a deal with the music companies. Right on Chris! God is good!
@ money is not corruption. You can do good or bad with money, and again had the Samaritan been poor, he could not have helped to begin with. Money only amplifies your morals. If someone is “corrupted by money” I’d wager they were “corrupt” before getting money as well. Mother Teresa used the foundation of Catholicism to fund her charity, again would have been much less effective without the wealth given to her cause.
It just doesn't play out that way in life, that those with money have greater power to do good. Being rich does grant you more power to move resource and material, but less power that comes from the humble intelligence of being connected with the earth, community, and lifeways that generate long term survival and balance. There's a cost to wealth hoarding, and it happens in your spirit and your intelligences. Hoarded privilege separates you from this earth. I do justice work - the people who have the most privilege, while well meaning, often cause the most harm and have the least lived intelligence to show up and do the work in a good way that actually generates community survival or "positive change" if you want to phrase it that way.
I am the Grandson of a Former Coal miner Former Marine in WWII and Father of 4 born 1925 he passed away in 2011 born and raised in a small coal mining town in Apollo P.A. Oliver this hits home Thank you for being the light that keeps me moving forward and the voice of many stay Humble and blessed my Friend!
Love this version
My Father was born in 1919. He was a force to be reckoned with. He lived his life the way he wanted and I never saw him not have an answer someone was looking for. He was well read, well loved, and a giver if there ever was one. The day he died was January 11th. I thought the world would stop turning. I thought everyone would feel the world dim a little when his light went out. None of that happened. He was laid to rest on our family land and I’m here to tell all y’all that the world is a little less worse off without him. Y’all might not know him..but I did…I did…we need more folks like him. I’m trying everyday to be my best version, but it’s hard in this new world…I’m getting tired y’all….
Semper Fi!!

We had a black mouth cur with reddish fur, this song reminds me of him. His name, Apollo!
The fact it was filmed in a active mine is insane but amazing
This true? How'd you know? Pretty Bad A!

This is cool as hell
Yah, was that "BOOM" from them mining? That was really cool!
This man has so much soul and power in his voice it’s unbelievable ! It’s like he’s singing from the broken souls that want too but can’t.
Black Sheldon sang this song
@ I know the original, I like this version more tho it seems more sad and broken than Blake’s. His was more idk how to explain it lol but this is better I love to hear him cover 3 wooden crosses.
@ChristopherDavalos-m9c no doubt, he's got a very soulful voice.
"...want to, but can't.."
Amen!
Some of the hardest working men in America sitting there listening to oliver Anthony in that mine ty boys for doing what you do down there in the dark to keep this country running

I speak from the outside world. I’m an American Texan born citizen. I like to say that you are by far the most melodic understandable country singer that I’ve ever listened to. Keep your singing going. I understand the world is a lot bigger than the place you come from. We hear you and we understand you and we feel you. We love you.
Born in Texas Live in Europe Still Texas proud in my Heart.... Old School lives forever.

Love this from a coal miner granddaughter!! Thank you very much. Made me cry my Papaw would have love you
Hi Oliver,
My name is Jay Tucker, and I’m with the Westmoreland Parks and Recreation Committee in rural Tennessee. We’re organizing a music festival to raise funds for improving our parks and fostering a sense of community, and we’d be honored to have you as our headliner.
Westmoreland is a small town with a big heart, but we face challenges that come with being in a rural area. For example, until recently, the community sewage tanks were located just 75 feet from the coach-pitch baseball field. It was a tough situation, but this past year we managed to get them moved. Even so, our parks still need significant upgrades to truly serve as a gathering place for families.
Our town also has a rich musical history. Westmoreland is the birthplace of William Owen Bradley, born here in 1915. He became a trailblazer in country music, shaping the “Nashville Sound” and producing legends like Patsy Cline and Loretta Lynn. In addition, upper Sumner County has produced icons like Conway Twitty and the Wilburn Brothers.
Your music resonates deeply with rural communities like ours, and having you headline our festival would mean so much. Please let us know if you’d be interested. Thank you for all you do to uplift small towns and communities.
Sincerely,
Jay Tucker

I love the fact that he messed up the lyrics in the 3rd verse but kept it in anyway; he even acknowledges it, lol. This man is so organic playing anything, and this just shows it. God bless him and those hard-working miners. Keep doing what you're doing 👌
See....this is why we support you so much. You are down there with the men in the dirt even where they work. Much respect brother.
this was sung in a coal mine in Iaeger, WV. i live 3 miles from this mine. sadly i had missed him. but his love for southern WV is crazy, this guy’s an absolute legend. thanks for putting appalachia back on the map, man!
I remember laeger, was born in Logan played them in ball, was in the 90's have lived in NC since 99
NICE 🎉
What mine? My grandad and dad mined in Gary but lived in iaeger, my great grandfather owned a mine in McDowell co. We know some of the same people even though I've never lived there lol. You may have known my grandparents
@@danielcampbell9344 the mine is owned by Phillips Management LLC. the guy in the white hard hat is the owner, James Phillips. i’m unsure of the name of the mine itself because it changes owners every other year. but it’s on a curve right before the intersection that connects the Town of Iaeger to JohnnyCake.
@@TheJRod304 Johnnycake Mine #1 is the current name
This is great. Paying tribute to the miners. Why has no one done this??? Hats off to Anthony.
Blake Sheldon wrote this song about 20 years or so ago
@allenedwards977 He didn't write it, but he did sing it! George Jones originally sang it, and Kenny Roger's did too on an album. All of them did great, but this one is by far the best!
An instant Southern Gothic classic. Billy's fiddle is so haunting. He always knows exactly where & what to play. Bravo!
Mane quit making up genres.
@@bucketheadrox😂😂 i was like what the hell is southern gothic?? but i kind of dig the sound of it lmao
@@bucketheadrox Making up genres? Sir, crawl out from under that rock and abandon your den of philistines. Southern gothic is a literary style has been around nearly 100 years. Look up authors such as William Faulkner, Carson McCullers, Harper Lee, Tennessee Williams, and Truman Capote.
lmao its a cover
My great grandfather was a coal miner. He died of black lung when my papaw was 3 months old in 1921. I thinks this is great that you went down in the mines to sing for the miners. Much respect from East Tn.
"Died of the black lung in 1921" is most definitely a song lyric. You should chase that down. Write some prose. See where it goes.
My great grandfather died in a cave in at 27 years old in Mingo county west va. My grandma was a little girl playing outside the mine when it caved in. They pulled him out with a broken back. He passed the next day. RIP great grandpa. He's buried at the Hatfield cemetery in Mingo in the tug River valley. Yes I'm related to the Hatfields and my wife is part Mccoy. No joke.
The fact he left the mistake in the video sets him apart from everybody. He is still down here with us and not up there with them. In other words still a regular person.
I didn't notice a mistake?
God bless this Man 🙏🙏🙏
@ go back and watch carefully. Toward the end of the song.
Think my seventh time I've listened to in a row. I've noticed a mistake and loved every bit of it 🤘❤️🤘

He's definitely a great addition!
This may surprise some of my Southern Countrymen, but growing up in Vermont in the 80s I raised Walker hounds. We had a couple Blueticks, a Plott, an English and a Black and Tan, Jesse she was the sweetest old girl.
As such I've always loved this song because I know hounds.
This is the way I've always wanted to hear this song sung ❤️🥹
Thank you good sir for once again bringing voice to so many of our souls. ❤
Straight up Johnny Cash type *LEGEND* in the making. We’re witnessing it y’all.
For sure
A voice like Cash. A heart of Guthrie

Nah, this guy acts too morally to be like Johnny
@ lol okay Karen
Mr. Anthony's music gets me thru my day of long haul truck driving. Helps put the miles and my blues behind me.
you make me want to get the hell out of Canada and run south where the good ole soul music still lives and thrives.
Do it!
Your president would make me want to get out. Come help make America great again.
Me too 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🍺
Agree brother northern boy. Still hope out here.
I want to move south also, but it's not as easy as just simply doing it. Pretty difficult to do it legally. Right now I am looking for an American woman to marry.
Oliver is the real deal. Keep singing and playing the way music was supposed to be. With traditional instruments and a true God given voice. No auto tune their. Thank you Oliver God Bless
Thanks for singing live to this Audience. There the ones that keep me blacksmithing. Forever Great-full
I've been playing music 60 + years. I'm 70 now and I love this music. A+++ rating. Glad you told the music industry where they could take it.
I'll second that !
He'll be in The Library of Congress one day, for eternity, (just like Leadbelly and so many other "authentics").
As a Coal Miner for the last 11 years this sinks in hard with me. Love it!

This man could sing the phonebook and I would listen. listening to him. It’s like listening to Stevie Nicks, haunting.
My granddaddy was a caol miner, got the black lung but kept on keeping on up until his 90s, what a giving and loving man he was. Cleaned out his shed out back and kept his miners helmet and a few carbide lamps… sure miss that man and Granny too!!!
Keep up the great music my man!!!

Starting out 2025 with another banger from Oliver yesssss
Wouldn’t call it a banger, cool song but if he wouldn’t have messed up the “escape” portion of the song it would have been better for sure
What is a banger
Out of respect. You are idiot's. Stop trying to be trolls and respect the music.
My great grandfather passed from black lung from the mines in Cabin Creek, WV.
Thanks sir
I love this revival of old style country
I like this sound better than the original ❤

I just wanted to say it means so much to me that you sang this song. I used to sing it daily in my childhood and it always brings me back to simpler times. You’re one of my favorite singers and hearing you sing my favorite song makes my whole 2025. Lots of love to you and your family this year!
Such a great song, always loved that one! Love that you left the slip up in there, actually live! Hell of a voice!
The fiddle is the cherry on top. Such character being played
You are one of the best newer country artists I’ve heard, I have one of you’re stickers on my buggy from when I went to your concert in Pikeville Kentucky 5/7/24, it was actually two days after my birthday, sucks that you were sick but I got my hat signed by the Davidson brothers

Dropping that bass! lol
I was wearing headphones when I heard that part I was like oh shit they really working lol

They dont blast coal anymore, they use a cutting machine called a continuous miner, if you look at the roof over him those long scratch marks are made by the carbide teeth. Third generation coal miner here.

this was recorded live in a mine? wow, who knew that mines had such good acoustics.
Heartfelt performance, i love people who stay true to their roots, it comes across.
Love from Belize
I think the first time I ever heard this song I was 27 in 2007 and I drove 2 hours through a blizzard to take my best friend to a Blake Shelton concert in our hometown casino for his birthday. I swear there had to be less than four hundred people in that little room, maybe a lot less, so it felt like a private show blake was really young back then and I think it was right around when his album came out with this song on it. Man, he really sang the hell out of that song. I am glad you chose this song to sing in the bowls of the earth.
Old ginger here in FL.
The more i listen to this guy, the more I love him.
