This song has it all; crime, drama, romance, action, and tragedy. Truly one of the greats.
Its been almost 10 years since i was put in prison.... i had to serve 2 years in federal prison for a dumb mistake i made when i was 18 years old.... we had radios in there and the only channels you could pick up were the country music stations.... this song came on every single day... brought a tear to my eye every time..... how i missed home... missed my family... missed my girlfriend.... it was the worst experience in my life... but this song helped me through every day.... im proud to say ive never been back... i have a excellent job and a wonderful baby boy.... Thanks Blake Shelton for this wonderful song... it helped me realize what i left behind and what i will never leave behind again!

“BUM-BUM-BUM-BUM-BAA-DAAAAH!”
Is that a bass fiddle or a cello? Either way, it’s badass.
"Love got me in here and love got me out"
That last line just hits so hard
I am so happy my Mom still remembers when Blake Shelton was on La Grange, Indiana when he was just starting out. They stopped at the gas station she was working in to get drinks and snacks. Blake was short change. Mom offered to go ahead and make it up. Blake said no he would go out to the bus and get the change. So when he sent on of the guys in with the change he had autographed a picture for her. Mom still remembers the red sparking outfit he had on. Mom is im the nursing home now. We can't find the picture with the autograph. But Mom said Blake was very kind. Thank you Blake for just being YOU. EVERYTIME MOM SEES YOU ON TV SHE TALKS ABOUT THAT MEETING.GOD BLESS YOU BLAKE.

More like a lot of story with only a little words
This is why I like country music. There's generally a story to them...and they are either sad, or downright HILARIOUS!
Sad = Whiskey Lullaby
Hilarious = As Good as I Once Was
Yes
Some beach 😂😂
People like Luke Bryan and Florida Georgia Line are ruining the genre.
Agreed
"love got me here, and love got me out" haha, simple story, but beautiful voice
Like most people, I tend to prefer original art. Movie remakes are rarely as good as the original. And song covers are rarely as good as the original song. Very rarely.
BUT…this is one of those rare exceptions. Blake’s version of this song is 100x better than both George Jones’s and Kenny Rogers’ version combined. Blake’s booming bass voice, plus his band-the percussive guitar playing, the bluesy harmonica and organ, and that cello-just take this song to a whole new level.
Am I the only that wouldn't be mad at it if Blake brought the long hair back? I dig it.😅
You got that right
Its would be a good idea but I think he needs a mullet
That was him back in the day

I actually met him when I was younger. About like 6. I remember for some reason my little Innocent mind walking up to where he was and asking him to sing this song at a toe suck festival in Conway, Ar. 🤣 Remember everyone thinking it was cute. My mother was really embarrassed 😂 his gaurd even started to get me off stage 🤣🤣 and he just laughed and said it was okay it was cute. Then announced that he was gonna sing this song for his little fan. Crazy how much time has passed for sure. Was about 13 yrs ago.... Still really love the song.

To all those saying George Jones wrote this song, he didn't. He first recorded it, sure, but he didn't write it. That honor goes to Mark Sherrill, Don Goodman, and Bo Bohan. I just like to make sure the songwriters get their due, 'cause many times those who work behind the scenes don't get the credit they earned.

Lyrics
Well, I caught my wife with another man
And it cost me ninety-nine
On a prison farm in Georgia
Close to the Florida line
Well, I'd been here for two long years
I finally made the warden my friend
And so he sentenced me to a life of ease
Takin' care of Ol' Red
Now, Ol' Red, he's the damnedest dog
That I've ever seen
Got a nose that can smell a two-day trail
He's a four legged tracking' machine
You can consider yourself mighty lucky
To get past the gators and the quicksand beds
But all these years that I've been here
Ain't nobody got past Red
And the warden sang
Come on somebody, why don't you run?
Ol' Red's itchin' to have a little fun
Get my lantern, get my gun
Red'll have you treed 'fore the mornin' comes
Well, I paid off the guard and I slipped out a letter
To my cousin up in Tennessee
Oh and he brought down a blue tick hound
She was pretty as she could be
Well they penned her up in the swampland
'Bout a mile just south of the gate
And I'd take Ol' Red for his evening run
I'd just drop him off and wait
And the warden sang
Come on somebody, why don't you run?
Ol' Red's itchin' to have a little fun
Get my lantern, get my gun
Red'll have you treed 'fore the mornin' comes
Now Ol' Red got real used to seein'
His lady every night
And so I kept him away for three or four days
And waited 'til the time got right
Well, I made my run with the evening sun
And I smiled when I heard 'em turn Red out
'Cause I was headed north to Tennessee
And Ol' Red was headed south
And the warden sang
Come on somebody, why don't you run?
Ol' Red's itchin' to have a little fun
Get my lantern, get my gun
Red'll have you treed 'fore the mornin' comes
Now there's red-haired blue ticks all in the South
Love got me in here and love got me out
Still a better love story than twilight

I grew up hating country music and liked rock, rap, and metal. I was doing a 3 year stint in a prison that didn't have the radio stations i listened to at home so i had a fm radio and id scan stations. Walking the rec yard. I came across this song in that prison yard in the summer of 2006 and after all that time country music is now my favorite in 2024
I love the Lord, for he heard my voice;
he heard my cry for mercy.
2
Because he turned his ear to me,
I will call on him as long as I live.
3
The cords of death entangled me,
the anguish of the grave came over me;
I was overcome by distress and sorrow.
4
Then I called on the name of the Lord:
“Lord, save me!”
5
The Lord is gracious and righteous;
our God is full of compassion.
6
The Lord protects the unwary;
when I was brought low, he saved me.

@@eeriecraft1797 Yea I'm pretty sure he did it as the this song and the original says nothing about his innocence which I'd think he'd most definitely mention if he was innocent but the part about being friends with the warden, his wife cheating and him finding out about it, and he fact that he escaped and also the vibe of the song sounds like something from the 40s and 50s, all of that reminds me of Shawshank even with the obvious differences..funny cuz I've never even thought of if he did it or not til u mentioned it but I'm pretty sure he did it so unlike Andy at least he wasn't unjustly convicted
