I love the almost parental role Amy and Rory take towards the doctor here. He hasn't shown up in two years, but after a brief telling off it's all hugs and there's a place for him at the dinner table because of course there is-that's what family means.

It also makes it more realistic. They’ve aged and become more mature. He’s now there son in law too. It’s odd that they never explored Amy having abandonment issues though. The doctor left her as a child, left her again for two years in the first episode, then again when Amy was left behind for around 40 years in an alternate time stream, now again here. Then again throughout season 7.

The whole ‘always having a seat ready for him’ reminds me of when 11 finds out Brig died in the Nursing Home. The Brigadier always insisted that a glass be ready for the Doctor, in case he ever decided to pop by for a visit. ❤️ The Doctor has plenty of people who would welcome him with open arms if he ever felt the need to stop by. I’m happy Amy and Rory showed him that.

No, it doesn't make this scene better. In this Xmas special The Doctor doesn't understood happy crying, because he doesn't have a family. At the end the episode he realized he has a family and finally happy tears came from him. This the scene The Doctor realized how important The Ponds meant for him. Because of this scene Amy and Rory's departure was so hard for The Doctor. Your theory is cool, but it's better to think this scene was happened before series 7.

Effortlessly weird, lighthearted, and charismatic. Also, Amy and Rory are absolutely one of the best companions. In terms of character development they've come the longest way compared to anybody else IMO. And became just as important to the show as the Doctor himself.

If you want that in your programmes, put it in Eastenders where it's relevent to what's happening in realtime. DON'T put it in a sci-fi entertainment show where it ISN'T and cram it down the throats of people who don't want it in their escapism. Yeah it started to become something different around peter capaldi's run, I mean it was still doctor who but it started to become something weird but in my opinion it was still good. Than Jodie Whittaker came on and the whole show changed. No disrespect to Jodie but it just feels so weird and not doctor who, this new director is just not good in my opinion. It sucks because I love Jodie and want to give her a chance but the writing is just so bad. The only thing I like about this new series is the master but even that is bitter sweet.

@@ethanruzic8071 Honestly I think the thing about 12 is that he's in conflict with himself, the question for him is, is he a good man? that's the heart of his run, Despite his bad episodes you have to admit he's doing a good and moffat wrote him nicely as a character.
He has his up and downs but he does still feel like the doctor. Sad moments, Happy Moments, Grief, Everything. You can somewhat feel something when the companions say goodbye.
NOW WTF WAS I SUPPOSED TO FEEL WHEN RYAN AND GRAHAM LEFT?
They all felt blank during Series 11 and while I haven't watched series 12 cause I refuse to, it seems they're as blank there from what I've heard, And I watched the ending for them, There's no them emotionally damaged they want to leave or the doctor leaving them, THey just wanna live normal loves now.
Which I have no problem with but the fact is, It made me feel nothing, Not Empty, Not Sad, Not a bittersweet feeling. Just nothing!
This would have been fine if they left like that but I had absolutely no impact! Nothing No Emotion! Not even Anger i was just like.
      Ok they gone now.
In all seriousness, YOu can at least feel the other companions goodbyes, It's sad for them, I even felt something when Martha left! Somehow! And she just said that she wanted to leave, MAybe its because I like her character? I dont know, Point is I feel nothing

@@ivandphantom9028 On paper, Peter Capaldi's character arc was brilliant. My problem with him is that he played the Doctor as a sociopath in Season 8. Not merely socially awkward - watch his and Clara's "The cards" scene in Season 9 if you want to see Capaldi successfully pull off social awkwardness - but an actual sociopath whom the Valeyard and the Dream Lord would be proud to have in their regeneration cycle. Peter Capaldi's just not that great an actor despite being given the best character development. Actually, it's probably BECAUSE he was given the best character development. Steven Moffat really overestimated Capaldi's ability to deliver on the scripts that he gave him. People say that the writing is the problem and there are a lot of idiots who blame Clara for stealing the show throughout Season 8 but it's actually Capaldi himself who was the problem. If he was a better actor, Season 8 would be beloved. Seasons 9 and 10 proved that he CAN deliver great performances as the Doctor but he took far too long to reach that point.
John Hurt, who should have swapped places with Capaldi and been the 13th Doctor instead of the 9th, could have pulled off the "Am I a good man?" character arc without being a cold hearted bastard for 86% of his first season. Hell, he did exactly that in Day of the Doctor and did it better in a single episode than Capaldi did in his entire debut season. And yes, I did the calculations required to reach 86% because the precise moment where Capaldi stopped being a shitbag was after he finished ranting at Clara in Dark Water and decided to "Go to Hell" for her sake. Clara's betrayal was a long time coming because Capaldi had been treating her like trash for the entire season. Danny's death was the catalyst but even if he hadn't died, Clara would have had enough of Capaldi's bullshit eventually.

@tomnorton4277 Capaldi, not a great actor? My heart has been shredded, pulped, sifted and deep fried into bits of black burntness.
What about the speech that 12 gave in "The Zygon inversion"? Capaldi acted that scene SO WELL, what's more is that he did it all in 1 take.

Absolutely one of my favorite scenes on the entire Who series. The refusing to hug first; the Tardis blue of the door; and the fact that the Ponds set a place at the dinner table for him each year...this was a family who loved one another dearly.
This is why the Doctor/Ponds run is favorite in the Dargan Household, and also why "Angels in Manhattan" is one of my favorite episodes, because Amy's monologue at the end and that smile at the sound of the Tardis said it all.

This scene, is by far my favourite out of the entirety of Matt's time as The Doctor. After so long, years of thinking he's alone in the universe he finally realised that he had a family. Tennant may be my favourite Doctor but Smith will always excel in special places

It's thanks to these kinds of scenes that I can understand how the 11th Doctor forgot his trauma from the Time War (as shown in Day of the Doctor). They gave him a family and a house that he lost. Where I find it telling is the fact that he agrees to join the Christmas meal. Where 10 refused for Runaway Bride and had to be forced for Next Doctor. There he accepts... Even though they are different showrunners, I still find that the transition between Tennant and Smith works enormously.

Why is no one talking about the 4 knocks the Doctor does?
He knocks in a rhythm of 4 knocks in a row, thought that was a nice throwback to David's era by Matt.
