    Massive respect for that Marcus, I knew it wasn’t 98% copper but didn’t want to carry on the conversation because I find in comments sections you don’t get the “tone” of peoples voices so everything seems to end up in an argument very quickly, anyway it made me do a lot of research on mig wire which was fun 😆👍

    Hi Marcus, your Escort is coming on nicely, well done. At one stage we were doing the same things simultaneously. I am busy with my escort van on my channel and picked up a few tips watching you. Anyways i agree with the other comments regarding the issues you are having with the welding process, but i do believe half of your problems stems from the fact that you are using a generator as a power supply. As the revs drop or pick up the voltage changes and i know that these computorised welders does not enjoy a fluctuating current. I am sure if you plug it directly into a socket/lead it would weld better. Anyways, take care. From S.A.👍

  • @R6AAO
    @R6AAO Місяць тому +1

    Make sure the positive clamp is connected to very clean metal and the metal is the same metal as what you're welding. Don't attach to anti roll bar brackets etc as it will add to resistance. It must be direct to the same work piece as what is being welded, no gaps or interferences. If those aren't the problem then the transformer is either faulty or just not powerful enough. It might be time for a better welder.

      Yes mate I defo need to have a good think how exactly I want to mount the mud flaps. I have purposely left extra material on the arches so that I can cut more off when I come to fit the mud flaps. I want them to be nice and high and poke out. i have a hitbox mig using flux core wire it welds better on thick stuff and ive rebuilt a mk2 using it on thin stuff its abit tricky but you can get decent welds once dialed in, you need no gas and can weld in a storm if you need 2 -- - is your wire feed fully controllable turn it fully offwhen you pull the trigger no wire should come out then turn up your wire feed slowly to meet your heat- check your wire speed with gas off so not to waste it- ideally you need someone who is a good welder to set up your mig as they will know if theres somthing wrong with it or its just you

    Marcus your doing multiple things wrong with that welder mate, i have the exact same welder and it welds 15mm plate without breaking a sweat. The reason your killing tips is because your welding with the torch touching the metal your trying to weld, your torch is too close. Your welds are black which means your not using enough shielding gas or its being blown away by wind. Buy a cheap flow gauge off fleabay so you can use the right amount of gas to shield the weld. (And save money)
    The dial on the right on the welder isnt for wire speed thats is to increase the temp on the weld being layed. The reason your weld are not penetrating the steel is because its not hot enough and theres not enough shielding gas to create the weld pool. You cant use them welds you put on that axle because they will crack mate. It also helps to clean the metal with acetone before you lay a bead for a cleaner weld And lastly When your welding do it in the garage where theres no wind so the gas your using isnt blown to atmosphere and you will also save money on gas. Bin them little bottles n buy/rent a bigger bottle of argon co2 mix and your welding will change like night and day

    You sure the generator is giving enough current to cope with the high power output of the welder. More you ask, more it needs to deliver and it’s just an engine in the end. You might be asking a 1.0 panda to tow a 4 tonne trailer!

    IIRC As your welds gets thicker, more current is required. Your generator is 3200W. Watts = Volts x Amps. So your generator peaks at 14.5 Amps for 220v. Fine for thin panelwork.....but thicker stuff hmmm.

    You're mixing up your settings mate I have the same welder you need more amps (right hand knob) If you set the volts to 14.5v when the amps are around 90 then turn the amps up to say 110-120 to weld thicker stuff you should be fine .When you turn the amps up the wire speeds up and the volts rise automatically to suit👍
    I use co2 argon mix and i have welded axle brackets fine

    • @marcushayesford
      @marcushayesford  2 місяці тому +1

      Thanks for the advice mate! 👍 I need to study settings a bit more. I assumed that the left knob did the heat and the right knob did the speed??? I have noticed that the left number adjusts a bit automatically when you adjust the right knob tho. Im going to try the welder at home VS at the garage to rule out my generator too. 👍

  • @pedenconceptz
    @pedenconceptz 2 місяці тому

    I see you saying your using co2/argon. But it looks like that bottle says just argon? You don’t weld steel with just argon. The gas matters. Argon is for aluminium (and possibly stainless, im not sure). With co2/argon the ratio matters. One with less argon is for lighter material and the regular is for thicker material. If my memory serves correctly. You can use pure co2, it would work well for anything your doing there on a car…. If you can’t get the argosheild ‘lite’.

    • @marcushayesford

      Im 100% sure I was using Argon / CO2 mix gas when I had the problems before I changed the liner etc.

    • @pedenconceptz
      @pedenconceptz Місяць тому

      @ I don’t think you will be able to weld mild steel with a mig using argon successfully…. Whether that is the problem I don’t know, but it won’t help in my opinion. Somebody lent me a bottle of 80%20% argon co2 mix one day I ran out and I couldnt weld with it at all. It would work ok on a clean test piece of steel but wouldn’t weld on the car with any success…. The science behind it I don’t know.

    • @pedenconceptz
      @pedenconceptz Місяць тому +1

      I dont the think the tip or the liner is the problem. I could use a 0.6mm tip to the point you could run 0.8 mm through it without problems. Either it’s a power issue but I suspect it’s the gas, the arc is not stable. Go buy a £15 cylinder of co2 out of Halfords and try it. People don’t like pure co2 because it gives splatter… but it will weld regardless, whether the part is dirty or has traces of paint, rust etc. it’s not ideal but it’s right for what you are trying to achieve. … sticking two pieces of steel together reliably. There are different co2/argon ratios and unless your using the same as you always have you won’t get the same results.

      The earth clamp isn't earth. It's positive. The earth is the gun. That's why you don't get fried. It's possible the positive clamp and wire is internally compromised but I think most likely the welder isn't powerful enough or the transformer is failing. Welders aren't good for tacking en masse. They are for running beads. The constant on off damages components because of the high amps.
