One Epic from the technical side of singing, they’re all probably singing either “ah” or a slightly modified “aoh” sound. An “ah”/“a” vowel is the most open in the mouth structure allowing for more passage of air, therefore, less strain on the voice/vocal chords.

(8:38) Best change and power in protecting firmly on the notes and holding that last note that long was wonderful. Saved the best for last, clearly! Much respect to Idina for originating a number of beloved roles, but I love Willemijn's combination of beautiful timbre and power with control and artistry.
After listening to all of these, I actually prefer those who simplified the riff and nailed the notes rather than those who showed range and were not solid. I love a good, wild, goose bump provoking run, but with this being so iconic, to me, nailing it outweighs the fancy. I'll take Wills F5 growl any day of the week.
I honestly hate when people try to throw an unnecessary run in there. Not only does it mess up the cue and timing for the ensemble and orchestra, it’s just ridiculously extra. Just sing it as written and I guarantee you people will still be impressed.
Actually, usually it's day of the month. Some singers will opt for a less complicated and/or lower riff during certain days of their menstrual cycle because their voice can be temperamental those days
I actually enjoyed the extra notes. It’s the most powerful part of the story for Elphaba as she tells the entire world that she’s not being controlled and she’ll use her own power to be on top. So hitting those notes as strongly as they can and with their own expression of Elphies feelings, is the best thing in Broadway. And I love to see it.

Rachel Tucker did the 3rd riff at 7:37 when I went to see her live and it truly had me in tears I just had never been so shook because I hadn't expected her to go up there
C#5 isn’t a difficult chord to hit. Most mezzos and sopranos can hit it without too much difficulty, but it’s the power, emotion and JOY behind the delivery in this song that makes the audience scream. All these ladies are talented and can belt those notes. It’s triumphant and beautiful. Love love love it!💚
I know nothing about the technical aspect of singing so whenever you put a note with a ‘!’ I sort of oooh politely 😂 does it mean it’s particularly high?
The note itself isn't particularly high, (though it is at the top of the range for most of these ladies) the difficulty is in the type of signing required for this part/song it's not a healthy technique (like they do with opera bel canto) though they try to limit the strain on the voice, there is a certain rhaspiness quality required to "force the note out" with a lot of volume, sometimes referred to as belting. It's essentially screaming the note out (not particularly healthy) that's why this role is so difficult, it takes an incredible of stamina to be able to pull that off 8 times a weak without damaging the chords :)
So much oh OH oh Oh's. It was exhausting editing this lol. This is some of the riffs I found. There's probably others but a) they were not recorded or b) the videos are gone. Anyways, enjoy!

Yaaaas Danna Paolaaaaaa! Eso chingona! Solo 19 años cuando hizo este papel y canto excelentemente
Lo hizo de los 17 a los 18
YALL BUT LETS APPRECIATE THE ENSEMBLE THEY SOUND BEAUTIFUL TF
(Edit: damn I just got hearted by the creator. 😭)
And you lost it because you edited the comment
shoshana is INSANE
so is the editing on this video i don’t know how you kept up with all of the wild riffs 🤭🤭
A little secret, I didn't. I'm actually dead right now lol
Love Shoshana! And this video too!
Noah Inchausti Shoshana is the Elphaba I saw. She was amazing. The next year I saw it with the stand in as Elphaba but the Glinda really shined.
Willemijn's control at the belting level and high notes........bow before her!! She even got some good vibrato in there!
Danna Paola's version never fails to give me chills
Same
Jessica Vosk’s resonance in the first attempt and the riff in the second was amazing
After awhile it starts sounding like jungle calls. I love these comparisons though! Your comment on Jessica Vosk 2nd riff made me 😂
She did way Way too much!
This could be a great alarm tone. Heaps of Ah!'s. My roomie's dog literally howled half way through the video. Lol! 🤣❤ Nonetheless, they were all amazing!
My dogs looking at me crazy right now too lol
Yeah my dog ran away. 😂
My dog died
@@cobalt._.27 I'm so sorry to hear that.
Conspiracy theory:
She’s Tarzan’s long lost relative
my body hair was defying gravity throughout this video
(get it since i was having goosebumps? okay bye now)
3:38 How many notes are you going to use in the final riff?
Elphaba: Yes.
1:45 hands down the best one
Unmitigated facts
Unmitigated facts
Willemijn's final performance of Defying Gravity is everything!
Rachel Tucker did the 3rd riff at 7:37 when I went to see her live and it truly had me in tears I just had never been so shook because I hadn't expected her to go up there
I loved the one that went “AHhhHhHhHHhhHhhHhHhHhHhHhHhHhHhhHhHhHhHhHhHhh.”
I agree that one was my favorite
Nah, I preferred the one that went"aHhhHhHhHHhhHhhHhHhHhHhHhHhhHhHhHhHhh
Which one was that? I missed it
Really? Which one? 😂 I prefer Idina but that’s bc she’s my favorite
Britney McGuire yes. Her. And the other one thing went “ahhHHhhHhHhHhhhHhhHhHh”
Yrs lmao💗💗💗
F5s are hard for a lot of women to belt even with training.
Haha thanks guys! I think I’m gonna finally read up on this
Anything above an F5 is very difficult to belt generally, however it is different for every singer
That Vosk riff #2... OMG
Thank you for including Myra Ruiz!!! I'm so proud of our brazilian Elphie
3:38 has me cRYiNggggg
alternate title: get chills for 8 minutes and 54 seconds
With all respect to all the other singers, 7:42 is the most epic ending of them all, like oh my god it´s incredible
I love Rachel Tucker. She's so talented!!!
The green got darker as the video went on!
The 1st one is so iconic but the 2nd one is SO CREATIVELY SWEET.
@Nyko yes I do!
your placement of exclamation points makes me happy :)
these all literally brought tears to my eyes, they’re all sounded so beautiful
Just look at Glinda this moment. 1:37
She's very surprised.
Thanks for all the time put into this video:)!!!!
I want to visit the planet where Willemijn and Rachel Tucker come from. WOW.
You have fantastic taste - they’re my 2 favourites :) the answer there would be Belfast, Northern Ireland... and the Netherlands xxx
I just knew the last clip HAD to be the last clip. I get goosebumps every single time with that one. Great vid!
So many people living for Danna Paola’s performance. People get really excited when see her live. Love her!
Danna paola is amazing
Did you notice that Danna Paola was the best? Her voice was completely belt in all the notes.
