- Today with visit the final resting place of Mother Mary Aikenhead. A very special grave with a window to view her coffin.
For the last twenty seven years of her life, Mary was confined to her bed or a wheelchair. Her vision and energy were not weakened by this confinement, but distilled into a deeper definition of service. Mary Aikenhead died on the 22nd July 1858.
On hearing the news of her death a poor farmer paid her this tribute: “That matchless woman! In her, Ireland’s poor have lost their best friend.”

Being a curmudgeonly old Catholic, I find this to be the loveliest and yet the humblest and most poignant cemetery I've ever seen. Even Punchbowl and Kawaiahaʻo Church out here would be hard-pressed in my mind to "top" this one. This puts the "serenity" into "Serenity Sue." Mahalo for bringing this to me, Sue!

I’m an American Civil War re enactor and portray a Sister of Charity. Being born and still a Lutheran, I had to study the sisters in order to portray them correctly. They were the only women who were allowed in camp with the soldiers without an escort they were so well respected. It has been a learning experience and a privilege to be able to show spectators the tireless work, compassion and sacrifice that they had done . Thank you for sharing this video 🙏🏻🇺🇸

What a lovely peaceful cemetary for the dear sisters who lived their Catholic faith. I am not catholic, born again christian but working for Father Nolan for years i learned so much and i so love the stations of the Cross, how and i knelt my knee when entering the church ...it is very stunning, but the cemetary has a humbleness ..Thanx Sue for showing me and teaching me a beauty i so admire..love you guys❤❤❤❤

A short but sweet video of the women who dedicate their lives in working for the Lord, and helping the poor have a better life as well.
The little plaques, so simple and brief, are all the testament of the lives these women have, as they do not seek approval or fame from the world, only to be remembered by the people whose lives they touched and made better.

Very beautiful resting place for a sincerely kind woman. I have a cousin who is a sister in the School Sisters of Notre Dame in Canada. I was going to become a nun, Sue. Every weekend I attended retreats at the Mother House with a friend for about four years. Then we moved back to the east coast and that was the end of that. I guess I really wasn't nun material! We need to be in contact via FB.

Beautiful, I am not Catholic but went through two years of instruction to become a Catholic Godmother to my youngest niece from my only brother. I highly respect the dedication and loyalty these women have lived. It was not an easy life back then to be sure. Thank you for sharing all these Sister's and holy mother's with us.

The light is activated by a PIR sensor (pyro infrared sensor) which is to the left of the stainless steel door. It detected your body heat as you approached. When you're out of range the light will stay on for a pre set time.

Wonderful, the nuns have been blessed with such a beautiful resting place!✝️ I don’t know if in the US if there is such a beautiful place like this for nuns. My children were blessed to be taught by nuns in elementary school. Don’t see nuns much in life now. I can’t even recall the last time I have seen a nun. 😢 Mary Aikenhead has been honored in death, what amazing resting place.
I was in the presentation which had several nuns teaching. The principal was also a nun and unfortunately, she wasn't so nice. She eventually left and rumours at the time say she left the presentation nuns altogether
Nuns anymore dress like most church goers in the US. Our nuns at our church just wear skirts and blazers no habit so that's probably why you don't see many now days.

Absolutely brilliant fairwell. Clearly took a great deal of care building not only the tomb but also the cemetery. Most of them just seem thrown together but this is one of the nicest cemeteries I've seen. Tomb is like 200 years old and still gets regular care than of it.
Yes, we spoke to a nun there, she said they have updated all the little headstone and of Mother Mary's tomb too

So much beautiful history in Ireland’s Cemeteries. I am actually at the Toowoomba Drayton cemetery , in Queensland Australia, having my lunch, I often do this , because of the peace ❤
