Exactly what I was thinking, Celine. They missed that significance. The one on the left likes to hear himself talk so a lot of meaningful moments are missed.
Well I honestly liked episode 4 from France even more than OG. In the OG, the kiss scene was meant to mimic the first kiss from Baz Luhrman's Romeo+Juliet which is Even's favorite movie. It is beautiful and romantic, although it lind of ends in a comedic tone when they got caught. In this one, the scene is all Eliott's short film, what for me makes it even more romantic is that while both Even and Eliott where trying to replicate the respective kiss scenes, Even was replicating his favourite movie, while Eliott was trying to replicate the scene his own short film, the thing he himself created based on his own feelings and experience. And on top of that, when Lukas hold his hands outside the tunnel, just like in his storyboard, Eliott looks surprised and happy, because that meant that Lukas knew his film and understood what was happening and went with it, it must have been so validating and romantic to him to, to know that the person that you like is so interested in you too. There are two episodes in this season that to me are superior than OG and this is one of them. I really don't care for people who refuses to acknowledge when a remake of something does something better than the original, and believe me, in this fandom, you'll find a lot of people like that, I just speak of what the screen makes me feel
I feel this so much!! In fact is infuriates me how like every other remake was like pool, kiss, move on. They completely missed the point of the original kiss, a how romantic this version is.
just a little context, the place elliott bring lucas to, is not a cemeterey nor a weird dark forest, it's a place called "la petite ceinture" (the little belt). it's a former railway going all around paris (hence "the belt") now used as a park. lots of people go on date there, it's usually not locked.
For as much as Skam France is the most similar to the original Skam, they are also the only one to nail the first kiss. Most of the other versions just do a pool and a kiss with no character development. This one understood that the kiss wasn’t about the pool, it was about Even trying to recreate that scene from Romeo and Juliet because Baz Luhrmann is his favourite director. In this one, Elliot is trying to recreate that scene from his movie Polaris. That’s why Lucas held out his hands, they were recreating the movie!!
Lucas recognized Eliott brought him to the tunnel under the bridge from Eliot’s story board for Polaris. That’s why he held his hands out that certain way. Lucas came out of the tunnel to connect with Eliott as in the story. It may seem creepy at first but Eliott meant it to be special and romantic and I think Lucas trusted Eliott….he’d done nothing previous to make Lucas scared, including time alone with Eliott in his apartment. I love how they made this story different while keeping similar story and themes. The two actors here are terrific and make the story their own. Yes, I hate how Lucas is treating Chloe. He’s intent on “fooling people” and is making a mess of it. Thanks for your impressions. Always enjoyable.
Also, I don’t think we can attribute Eliott taking Lucas to his place in the forest as a symptom of his bipolar, although we can’t be sure, or of him being manipulative. In later seasons Eliott talks about each of us having one special person who really understands us. A romantic notion and maybe too idealistic, but Eliott is a romantic.
I think one difference I really like in France is that from the moment they speak there’s no doubt they’re going to get together. There’s so much palpable chemistry it gives episodes 2 and 3 a very good crackle free of the confusion in the OG where I think you spend a lot of time going “wait, is Even into him or is he just an overly friendly straight dude?” Eliott is immediately upfront and it’s kinda obvious what is going on with him mental health wise as well, he seems very delicate. I think Lucas is way more active than Isak in great ways (holding his hands out, actively seeking Eliott out) and awful ways (the whole Chloe mess) and I like that his strength is also his flaw. I also like how much he softens around Eliott because he’s pretty spiky otherwise.
Did you watch this in real time? I did not catch it until just after it finished airing. But I did catch WtFOCK in real time. Trying to be there when you suspected a clip was going to drop was exhausting!!
Part of the formula for SKAM is that each of the time-stamped segments are posted at that exact day and local time. So you never know when the next segment will pop up. Additionally, there are real-time IG (or other sm) posts from the characters "real accounts" which give more info and context at times. It's part of the fun and charm of watching SKAM as it airs, it's fully immersive!
the tunnel scene was literally a scene by scene recreation of elliots movie project which lucas already watched before.. which is why he was not concerned about the ''danger'' because he already watched the movie elliot did.
Things are done by the time because thats how the clips are uploaded, each week you never know when clips will be posted throughout the week and they are posted at the time that it says for each scene, which really makes it feel real, they also use their instagram accounts as real accounts and you get notifications randomly throughout the day for them, then on a Friday all the clips from the week would be put together into the full episode. Thats what made Skam so unique and special, you really felt like you were involved with it all
When Manon left for England (season 2) she knew Lucas needed a place to stay and gave him her room in that apartment. That's why it is fair for her take it back temporarily from Lucas when she returned.
Manon helped Lucas i n the previous season actually, because he was without a flat. And when she went to London, she lent him her room. I feel the back story helps to explain why he feels ok about giving the room back, and while he trusts her. The cave and hands referred to Eliot art.
oh my god episode 4! this one is probably my favorite. it’s that point of no return episode. two things i want to throw in: the bac is essentially this final that every french equivalent of a senior in high school has to take at the end of the year. if they fail, they have to repeat their final year of high school (or whatever the french equivalent would be if there’s a different term) the kiss: i’m sure a lot of other people have mentioned it, but the reason for the different feel is because of how they do the story. in skam norway, isak finds a video of even talking about how he loves baz lurman and romeo and juliet. after that, there’s a lot of romeo and juliet/baz lurman references. in skam france, lucas finds eliott’s short film project - polaris. the kiss that they have at the end of the episode is lucas and eliott recreate the kissing scene in polaris. given the mental state that eliott was in, he probably either thought it was fate and lucas was the one, or he realized lucas had found polaris, remembered it, and was then overcome with emotion.
As in the OG SKAM it's not cool of them ditching the girls, but it's sweet, that he takes him to his special place, as the first person ever, that they have something really special since not even Lucille has been there before.(but yeah I also understand why you'd feel it could be some manipulative line, that he might have used many times before)
You really hit the nail on the head with the whole fetishising peoples sexuality problem. It took me so long to fully understand being a bisexual woman because so much representation of female bisexuality is fetishised to the extent that you think that being attracted to women is just a normal part of being a heterosexual woman, and then if you find yourself in a hetero relationship you start to second guess yourself and think you admire the women you're attracted to and just want to emulate them when it's not that at all. It's so good we're finally getting more nuanced portrayals of bisexuality but I still find myself identifying more with male bisexual characters than female, I still get a fetishised male gaze vibe from so much female sexuality on screen but especially female bisexuality.
Lucas was mirroring Elliot's animation. That's why when Lucas puts his hand out Elliot's face light up, because Lucas "gets him" etc. A lot of people basically stan SKAM France because Elliot is literally a model and it's "sexier" than SKAM OG, but SKAM France does have some of its own cue ideas. The Isak character having a more active role in pursuing the Evan character for one.
I guess "you're the first person I brought here" could be kinda sketchy, tho I read it more as him flirting/ making an impression lool like "how many people you've told that too" 😅 Elliott is straightforward and a heavy flirt. Like earlier in this ep HE approached Lucas first, or him saying "I thought it would be just us two" etc...
I think it' s very much a French thing and part of our culture to dissect your emotions and many details of your love affair/ relationship, with friends or close people , also in books, movies, reality shows ... It may be a bit surprising at first, but we are verbally (and orally) brought up that way.
Please go back to the storyboard from Eliott and watch the first kiss scene again ❤ It's so pure because Eliott realised with the hands he felt the same way! And yes it's kinda the first step.
If it was me, I would run as fast as I could, cause I had this thought that Eliott is a wampire and he will eat me! But, the kiss in the end was totally worth it!😉 And yes, I'm happy they used older actors.
SKAM france is great, but I do sometimes feel like there are things I just like more in the OG. There are more nuances and shades in OG, where France kind of eliminates the nuance. Lucas is also much more active in leading Chloe on, where Isak was more neutral, still leading Emma on, but a lot came from Emma making assumptions and Isak not being clear. Even and Sonja's relationship was implied to be strained, but Elliot and Lucilles is like vinegar, honestly like why you still together... why go back later on when it's this bad. Other scenes work better in France tho, and they're more cinematic and TV show like than OG, because OG was going for a very different feel. OG was doing weird tech things where it aired on the time that they show in the intro cards, tuesday 11:30 was out as a segment to view on that time and day, so it felt more documentary like. As if you were a fly on the wall of someones actual life.
I live for these reactions. Also I am reading My Policeman and am almost done with the book. When I saw the movie it broke me and this book is gonna do the same. If u have not reacted to it I would highly recommend
Everything about SKAM France is more dramatic compared to OG. Do the French have a higher threshold to feel emotions (they need stronger triggers to feel the same things)? Is French media this titillating in general?
It’s just a different interpretation by a different director and cast. Both the French and Norwegian moved me in different ways and I appreciate and liked both a lot.
In the Islam vs Science discussion, I don't really think she made that of a good point. Nothing against religion, I think it can be a helpful thing to many people and have positive impact. BUT science did change in the last 70 years because we realised that some things regarding homosexuality are incredibly outdated and that we have to change them. Islam (and most of other religions) has existed for over 1400 years but it essentially still adheres to the same moral code. Some things change but it's much slower and thus much more dangerous when it's wrong. Therefore, equating these two seems more like a logical fallacy than a good point to me.
While I give them props for not replicating the pool scene without any explanation (the only remake that uses the pool and makes it work is Druck), the whole scene is so creepy that I found it terribly offputting. Yes, I get the allusion to the Polaris storyboard, but as in many things in this version, it’s all a bit too obvious. I feel like this version tries to do all the work for you and explain everything, and I prefer the more elliptical and subtle OG. All of that being said, your reactions and commentary throughout are always a great deal of fun.
Does anyone know where to find the text msgs among the characters? The Instagram accts are still out there, but they kind of left the SKAM zone and started bringing in more "real life", so not as interesting. But I seem to recall there were text messages among the characters that add to story.
Lucas recreated the tunnel scene from Eliott’s movie project, I don’t think you noticed that ❤️
I don’t blame them. They haven’t been binge-watching it like we did to remember the details 😅
