As a non binary who worked as a custodian, I can attest men's restrooms are worse. I haven't come across someone literally missing the toilet entirely, and pooping on the floor in a women's restroom. But I have in men's room. Finally, urinals are NASTY and if you take a blacklight to both restrooms you will find pee EVERYWHERE in the mens. So much so I had to spray down the walls, ceiling and floors when I was working at Lowes and at Portland Community College. Also serious gender rant...why is the diaper table ONLY in woman's restrooms?

Another thing that probably benefits women's rooms is the fact that if one stall is a little questionable you can usually find at least one other stall that's decent since you always have multiple stalls to choose from instead of the usual single stall option in men's rooms.

I've been to countless bathrooms where at least one toilet is continuously running, several stalls have piles of toilet paper on the floor because apparently somebody peed on the floor?? Oh yeah and peace flat it all over the seat, several toilets not working, and actually at the ice rink I used to go to as a kid, at some point they closed off a specific sink with signs everywhere saying do not sit on sinks. By the way this is by no means a fancy bathroom, and each and every sink was separate and tiny, basically it should be common sense that they can't hold any amount of human weight at all whatsoever.

It's only awkward when ur in the stall and waiting on someone to pee already so it's not awkward if their stick is out while them identifying me as a girl. For about 3 years I worked at a business where we had single stall gender neutral bathrooms (yay!), which were for employees and also the general public. Although the gross behavior was not confined to one particular gender, anecdotally I would agree that it was a lot more common for men to be thoughtless about others who might need to use or clean the bathroom after them. My plea for everyone though is to clean up any pee you may accidentally leave on the seat. The person who comes in after you may not have the ability to do the hover method, or they may not be able to see if the toilet seat is dirty.

If you try it and the side effects that you experience are not worth it to you, you can always discontinue the hormones. as a custodian at a university, men’s rooms are 100% grosser. i mean, maybe as an afab person the period stuff just doesn’t bug me that much, but it also is usually contained to the toilet and doesn’t happen that much whereas in the men’s there is literally pee on every surface imaginable. like i’m cleaning pee off the wall 2 feet above the urinal. and the pee on top of the urinal gets trapped under the base of the flush and reacts with chemical residue to form this nasty green crust all over the top that you have to scrub HARD to get off.
the stupidest part though is that in the women’s room i’ve only had to pull stuff out of a toilet twice, and neither was even that bad. one was a completely unused tampon and the other was, i swear to god, a tortilla. but almost daily i have to pull wads of paper towels out of the urinals and about 80% of the time it’s an unflushed urinal absolutely full of the most yellow, dehydrated pee you’ve ever seen in your life.
that’s the other thing, since both have a bunch of unflushed toilets full of pee...i feel like i’ve learned the people using the women’s room are way more hydrated.

  • @CodexPotter
    @CodexPotter 3 роки тому +9

I'm a cis woman but at one of my jobs, the woman's room had 1 stall, the men's had 3 stalls and 3 urinals. I'd frequently use theirs, if the women's one had no TP or was out of order or just had a huge line. Although I did work in a convenience store, again single stall rest rooms but they were gendered. The drug deals happened in the women's room, but once I was cleaning the men's bathroom and a man said he was having an emergency and asked if he could use it before i finished, and he peed floor to ceiling, on the toilet paper, on the sink and the mirror. He said he 'wanted to make sure I actually cleaned it'. I also worked at a restaurant, and usually the men's room was worse. At my current job we have one women's room and one men's room, sometimes one of the restrooms will be out of order for some reason or another, and my experience using the men's room there has always been that they're exactly the same level of gross. At my university, the gym bathrooms as well as the pool bathrooms were severely mismatched,, and again the men's bathrooms were always cleaner.
I have a theory that the restroom with the most stalls is cleanest. Usually that's the woman's room because there are no urinals so there's more stalls, but in places like sports areas where the women's teams are underfunded and the men's teams are overfunded, the bathrooms are also better because literally everything is better for the mens.

Also if the public restroom is used often by drunk people and homeless, who are usually men, it will be very dirty it just takes 2 dirty guys a day to make the entire think gross.
Also in my coutry ading disinfectors in stalls, and Urinals being wider and having little walls between have improved things in mens public toilets much better

Women’s restroom in like offices and gyms sometimes have perfume and lotions left out near the sinks for anyone to use. So that is a factor of bathrooms as a refuge/socialization place, and a conscious effort to cover up smells. It however isn’t great for those who are scent-sensitive

Another thought I've had is I so appreciate the lack of shame around shitting in public in men's rooms. I've held it so long it was painful when I was still using the women's room - and if you share the restroom with another person in the women's room there was what I call... The Poop Wait. Only the one with the strongest will (or need) gets to go that day, the other gets to pack up and leave in disgrace and full of crap. It sucked.

I would probably say that in my experience men's bathrooms are consistently smelly, piss-soaked, and more likely to have broken locks and graffiti. However, women's bathrooms have the possibility to be significantly worse in extreme circumstances.
Like men's rooms are consistently scoring between a 2-5 with a few outliers, while women's rooms average at a 6, but can go all the way down to a minus 5.

Your analysis sounds logical to me. Especially the part about how some men get raised to not worry about if they miss their aim. I'm also astounded by the men who arrogantly assume that their aim is perfect and that their stream will never flutter or spray more widely, which tempts them to try to pee into a toilet without raising the seat, because they just assume that they won't hit the seat, and they don't care if the seat gets dirty because someone's mommy is likely to come in and clean up their mess for them.

As someone who's always used the men's room, I've always found it curious that the probability of handwashing varies by the setting the bathroom is in. It ranges from around 70% in a corporate office to 0% at sporting events. This is one of the big reasons that I would love to see private non-gendered stalls with a handwashing station outside, like in elementary school.

Just for clarifaction, I am a transwoman and have only really used the women's bathrooms for around 6 months at this point.
I have personally found not too much difference in cleanliness between both restrooms. The men's is a little smellier, but I find that is due to having less stalls and overall just being a smaller room. The piss and sometimes crap (really people?) being everywhere, is something I have really only seen at public outdoor toilets, e.g. a park. I have experienced this in men's, women's and unisex toilets. When it comes to malls and other indoor places, it's not everywhere but still present. I don't see it in either that often, but definitely more prevelant in the men's. Still uncommon though in my experience. I imagine this is because the cleaners are just that quick/good! Both restrooms seem to use a freshener of some kind and may even have ventilation depending, which definitely helps with the smell as well.
I'm not sure if it was mentioned. I personally find the women's room to be incredibly loud compared to the men's. I struggle to go in loud environments so it does cause me some distress. I never really experienced this in the men's room except for one time (it was at a concert, so like it made sense to me). I also personally can't stand the smell of so many different perfumes/deodarants along with the smell of crap and piss. It's just overwhelming. This type of thing seems worse in the women's restrooms, though still exists in the men's with specifically teenagers spraying whole damn cans on themselves.
I normally avoid using public restrooms if I can. I prefer to go at home where I can breathe in peace!

Nb person here. Of all the bathrooms I've used, the disabled bathrooms are hands down the cleanest and nicest. Obviously they are big and have all kinds of handy accommodations but I think they are cleaner because they are used far less often than the regular men's and women's rooms and cleaned just as frequently. (I only ever use the disabled room when there's no gender-neutral bathroom and no one is using or looking to use the bathroom. I'm never long, either. I know it's not a good thing to do but I gotta pee and dysphoria sucks.)

Walking in and seeing a stranger just peeing right there in front of you is so shocking and I don't know when it'll get less weird. Don't get me started at rest stops. I'm talking the big ones with all the fast food places in them. Those are daunting AF and i still get scared using them.

So.... If I were you I'd maybe ask if I can change in a separate room. But people will probably end up thinking you're weird. At my high school there were about five changing rooms and I got there ten minutes early and waited for some people to come out of one of those and leave it empty, then I went in, didn't change anything except for my shoes, just went right though the changing room and down into the gym

    • @Departure-yz7ok

I'm a guy too. Also trans. Two teachers at my whole took took me seriously, the rest thought I was a troublemaker and attention seeker, a wanna be boy. I hated PE. A lot of times I was made to use the girls locker room, and I stood there red in the face feeling like an f-ing pervert, trying not to look at anyone. You'll want to avoid that... Luckily (?) I got injured once during PE and couldn't walk properly for a while because of a small accident that had happened during PE, and I took that as an excuse to not participate in PE for a while. So yes. I definitely wish you luck. I like that you're already thinking about it, because I wasn't thinking about it, I always acted spontaneously instead of like, talking to a teacher to officially ask for a separate room where I could change, or instead of asking the other guys if it would be cool if I used their locker room, I didn't do anything and ended up being ashamed and embarrassed and bla bla bla. So ask in time. If you have close guy friends in your PE class, ask them first if it would be okay for them to support you and shield you a little bit maybe? And definitely talk to a counselor if your school accepts you!!

if possible, you could change in a toilet cubicle or in a disabled toilet. in my highschool there were toilets attached to the changing rooms and disabled toilets outside them. even if you change in the cubicle of an incorrectly gendered toilet, it's still much more privacy. some kids would even change in a toilet in a different part of the school during break/lunch sometimes.

Weirdly enough in my personal experience the age of that man has a factor. Like in general when I have to share a bathroom with men my age it isn't too bad and they keep it, if not fully clean, at least not filthy. Yet when I have to share a bathroom with older men it's DISGUSTING. They never clean up after themselves, never flush, if it's a private bathroom and they shave they just leave the hair in the sink. Again, this is just my personal experience.

Having cleaned both: both men and women (via the hover) pee on the seat ... and the floor ... and the walls ... and sometimes the ceiling. And sometimes manage to shit on the walls and ceiling (I don't want to know how they did it.) All humans are terrible.
One time my ex (identified as female at the time, now a dude, same as you) came out of a gas station bathroom traumatized bc "somebody shat their shirt." Apparently there was a t-shirt that somebody had used to wipe with on the floor of the stall. I assume the owner or said shirt walked out in their bra, but with a clean butt.
My brother is a surveyor, and on occasion feels the call of nature ... in nature, he rips the sleeves off his t-shirts to wipe, but stays clothed. Apparently the person that used that stall before my ex didn't know that trick.

I used to volunteer at a local music venue, where the mensbathroom was the grossest to no fault of the men in this case. It smelled so badly that you would notice several meters before reaching the door. The reason? The pissoir was malfunctioning so the flush-function would either be running constantly or (more often), got turned of entirely. It didn't help that there was no closable door, so the smell could just spread uncontrollably.

Hi been in both in Spain and in high schools. Women's bathrooms are far worse in my opinion, in women bathroom there would be knocked over period bins and the general smell that came from them. They were also more likely to be covered in fluids in the floor. I can say the same for gas stop bathrooms. But my school has a lot of urinals so no one enters the stall unless they need to pee.

FTM here and I lived in a dormitory building. I know a few of the women absolutely refused to go for number 2 if there was anyone else in the bathroom. Which, you know, happens in a dorm. One of them had even found a toilet somewhere in another building which is completely enclosed, instead of just a stall and she always went there for number 2.
The men's bathroom was much smellier, but they have made the mistake of placing the heater straight beside the urinal. And a few of them never cleaned the toilet when flushing wasn't enough to remove all traces.

I knew someone who, as part of her job, had to clean the bathrooms in a building at a university. She told me that the men's rooms were worse in general, but some people in the women's would try to flush those rough, brown paper towels that are supposed to be used for drying your hands, and every day, or more often, a toilet would get clogged and she would have to clean up a disgusting mess. That was her least favorite part of the bathroom cleaning job. I've always wondered why people would flush hand towels down the toilet, and why it mostly happened in the women's room. I still have no explanation.

I don't get why women hover with the toilet seat down. Like it makes it so much harder to do that if you don't put it up first.
I always put the toilet seat up (with my foot touching the tip of it so I don't touch where you'd sit on it to do so) then I hover, that way I don't have to hover so high, and don't risk touching the seat when I do, and yes it usually is to avoid the pee (and sometimes even poop) that's on the seats, or I just put toilet paper on the seat after I clean them with wipes given out at the store, if I can't hover for whatever reason.
But yea I usually pee standing up with the toilet seat up. But I don't have a d, just a v.
Also, I don't like the smell of my own poop when I do so I just use a small spray bottle of eucalyptus oil and spray once into the bowl b4 I sit, then do what I came in there to do. It has nothing to do with shame or anything, I just have a really good sense of smell, always have...And as you can tell, it has it's down sides.

If this isn't the perfect video for me to add to, I don't know what is. I'm trans and have used both the men's and women's bathrooms in public. I also worked at a gym which required me to clean both the men's and women's locker rooms. Here's my take:
Men poop more in public, men's pee definitely does smell stronger (it happened to me taking T), men have to touch less surfaces and therefore those surfaces are a lot more dirty (if no one has to use the toilet to poop, they just pee all over the seat and leave it), there aren't a lot of masking scents like perfume, and don't get me started on the towels.
Women tend to be a lot more aware of the mess they are making and usually clean it up (lot less pee on the seat, lot less random towels on the floor, lot less un-flushed toilets), but the showers are painful to clean due to the amount of hair.
I could add more but that's what really stood out to me.

VERY good subject for sure! Thank you Jackson, I always thought I was the only one who wondered this question, as I still use the women's room because I don't use STP devices so, like you said, one stall... 💩out of luck!
EDIT: I have a cis friend who also has been telling me about things like: In men's rooms, NO eye contact. Women's rooms, they talk to each other, whether to borrow TP or feminine products, it's generally more accepted that women will talk in their bathrooms than men will. Also, for urinal etiquette, DO NOT LOOK DOWN at anyone else's privates. Women seem to not care if they pee on front of others (group of friends) There's a LOT of things that can be said for women's rooms as long as there wasn't the "accident" or the "bathroom emergency on the fly" so to speak for the most part.

As a cleaner I can say you are correct. Both parties can be equally gross or nice, but it tends to lean on the "men" being "grosser".
I am a sub so I go different places as well, and there is this school for year 1-3 only that has 6 bathrooms, 3 for "girls" 3 for "boys" and even there I could both see and smell a difference. In the "boys" there were more paper on the floors, not really throwing it in the bins or just drop it however, and pee and sand or dirt and on the seats there were definitely a ton of pee most times, on all different "layers", and other stuff... The "girls" however usually cleaner floors, less paper, still some pee on the seats sometimes, but they are young so understandable, paper in the bins most of the time.
I will never stop being surprised however that the adults, the teachers that show/explain/help the kids make their separate bathrooms almost as gross even though they are also way fewer than the kids in total and all. Less to no paper on the floor is basically the only differense tbh.
Thanks for comming to my TED talk lol

Given that other closely related ape really don't do sex specific urine scent marking, it's unlikely that there is a huge difference in male and female urine. The biggest contributing factors in human urine scent are urine concentration (say from dehydration), length of time since last urination, urinary tract infection, and foods recently eaten. I tend to notice the scent of urine more close to the start of my period, but that is more likely due to the documented sharpening of the sense of smell between ovulation and menstruation. Possibly sudden hormone fluctuations could cause urine scent to change, but that happens to everybody. So yeah, as a biologist, the answer is I don't know for sure as it really hasn't been researched specifically, but the best evidence I can find at the moment says nope, chromosomal sex isn't the main cause of stinky pee.

I also think it depends where you go.
Here in my country, if i go to a public restroom in the center its very dirty and piss around urinals. But if i go to a mall its usually pretty clean. Also here they have finally started putting disinfectors ro clean a toilet seat after you in both mens and womens bathrooms. I havent been to womens bathroom yet of course but i imagine it might help with that hoover thing.
Generally mens public bathrooms that have Homeless people visiting them, and drunk men pissing in urinals and missing, are dirtier. If you go to a mall or a restaurant or something like that its usually ok.
Also it takes just one guy to make half the WC dirty. In school i remember some boys would intentionally pee all over, just out of spite or something.
(And when you said that if all urinals are taken some men go into a stall, thats true even if not all urinals are taken. Some men just have more of a problem peeing next to other people and if the urinals dont have those little walls between them they will go in a stall and then miss and everything is piss covered)
(also a type of urinal really effects how piss covered everything is, those that are just a giant metal plate with a lifted stand in front are the worst, you need to pee sideways to not get it on yourself, and even then it just sprinkles on the floor)

I love how I am not the only one who has learned to change under layers of clothing on the fly, but changing while driving is impressive. Also I don't pass so at the moment I can only speak for women's restrooms and neutral or non-gendered restrooms. Generally from what I can tell it's more case by case of the place. You're more likely to have the icky bathrooms in like gas stations or supermarkets or schools (even though the latter two keep them very clean) just because there's so much traffic to them and either not everyone is courteous, or they're in a hurry not feeling well have a disaster etc. You're more likely to see it get nasty where more people in general frequent them more often. Cause the more of a mix of people you get more often the worse it'll be. But it's also a curve. If the bathroom barely gets used or barely gets cleaned at all it may get gross too cause the single person who leaves a mess's mess may go unnoticed for a long time.

The Lady's also just has a better vibe, you'd never get a "OMG I love your hair in the men's".

your pee does change on HRT. mine got a bit stronger, not in a horrible sense but it's more noticeble. I also found that if you're not drinking enough water your pee will have a stronger smell, and if you're fully hydrated your pee would barely have any smell.

As someone who cleaned restrooms - if you’re looking for which is smellier then I’d agree the men’s for sure, probably for the reasons you listed. Shame, perfumes, etc. but as for messiest? nah, it’s for sure the women who got that locked.
I did often think that possibly the reason the women’s room was so dirty is BECAUSE they wanted to be clean. A guy might walk in, pee and leave without flushing. A woman would walk in, pee, take half the roll of toilet paper off the roll (leaving half unused and on the ground), about 10 seat covers split in multiple pieces, clog the toilet from all the paper, soap all over the sink and mirror, small receipts and wrappers from purse trash, etc. while they made sure they looked clean to everyone else 😂 😂 Fact still remained that you’d have a much larger job each night cleaning the women’s restrooms 🤷‍♂️

I dislike womens restrooms more, like at my workplace. but I do have an issue with the lack of stalls in mens rooms.

Person on HRT who’s really sensitive about scents here! Your pee absolutely changes scent once you transition, just like your body odour. It doesn’t necessarily become worse for people on T, but different. I wanna say it’s more spicy l if that makes sense? For me personally, I despised the way I smelled before HRT and I only realised after going on T that it was a dysphoria thing! I feel much more comfortable with the way any body stuff™ smells than ever. :)

My perception from working in a huge department store is that there are somewhat more gross men, but they're still a small minority. The main issue is that men just think "ugh, not great but I'll just deal with it and be out in a minute" and women want to sPeAk tO A mAnAgEr

I have seriously thinking about getting a top surgery, but my parents are RELY against the LGBTQ community, I don’t know what to do. I hate having to live two separate lives. What do I do

i swear mens bathroom stall doors are always either impossible to close or broken. But i like them better for the gender euphoria
