- Painting the valve cover, proper prep work will ensure the paint sticks. It's an inexpensive way to spiff up your car.
UPDATE: 10,000 miles later this is holding up very well! 6/2015
Here I'm painting the valve cover for my Saturn s-series DOHC engine. First I used Rustoleum aircraft remover to chemically strip the remaining finish. A thorough washing then painted with 500 degree rustoleum engine primer and then rust-oleum orange engine paint. The raised lettering was done by hand with red high temp paint and a disposable foam brush.
I would suggest cleaning the bare metal with acetone prior to painting and using high temperature primer and paint on any part that is bolted to the engine.
If you have a plastic valve cover then you will likely have to make special considerations for the paint to adhere.
You can pickup most of these supplies at your typical auto parts store, hardware store, or home improvement store. Autozone, VIP, Oreileys, Napa, Carquest, Advance Auto, Home Depot, Ace Hardware, etc.

This vid stopped me from looking at others. lol perfect video
Awesome job! Video showed me in detail how to do my own Saturn valve cover! Thank you so much for making these Saturn videos!
no result photos? i guess the red paint failed xD
That’s looks great! I’m about to do this to my Saturn. It’ll be the first time I’ve painted a valve cover so hopefully I don’t screw it up lol 🤪
That's beautiful!
Just a thought block sand the raised lettering to polish the letters. Then hit the whole thing with high temp clear. Again just a thought.
Now I'm gonna paint my valve cover and other stuff haha thanks a lot.!!
Thanks for the video , the paint brush trick is new to me and very useful . The only thing i would change is to suspend the the valve cover off the wood in a manor that doesn't allow the edges to touch it . Sometimes when painting the paint can stick the item being painted to the surface of whatever it's resting on . This doesn't appear to be the case here but others who try this might use plastic drop cloth or something that it will stick to. Thanks for the vids and make more already it's been a year .
Great video! Doing this soon on my head cover. I am replacing my Ford Focus head due to a bad seat valve and figured why not have some fun and paint the cover in hemi orange :)
I just painted my 361 big block's valve covers - can't wait to put them back on!
BTW painted them turquoise
Ended the video a little early
That Engine Valve Cover Looks Nice.
gracias! por tu video un saludo desde colombia!
Just done mine on my MX5, a regular wire brush takes a long time! If you want to enjoy doing the job I suggest using the drill attachment. But it will have the same result as a regular wire brush, just with much less effort.
Awesome video thank you kind sir
looks damn good
I think it looked better with just the primer.
aircraft remover... aircraft remover. removes any aircraft
bobrulerofall k

no results portion??, it was lookin so good and......
So how is the paint job holding up?
what is the aluminum valve cover part number???? where can i find one to fit my 98 sc2?????
How is the paint holding up?
nice video. imo block sanding the raised lettering would have made it look better. and i would wipe the surface clean with alcohol just before primer. but over all nice diy.
My valve cover has the PDF valve built into plastic cover brains GM have 200 to change off valve new gaskets and cover to fix
How do you stop the paint from going on the inside of the valve cover?
You take the holes with painters tape Which he didnt do.
What color paint is that? I know it's Orange, but they make many shades or Orange. Every engine paint I've found had had varying amounts of red in it.
+Stephen Smith to me it looks like chevy orange
Wao
Just a suggestion... But that aircraft remover costs a FORTUNE, in addition to not working as good as it could.
Go to Walmart (or equivalent) and buy a can of over cleaner. Regular works fine, heavy duty works even better. in LESS than 5 minutes you can wash it off with a water hose... Though I just carry all this to the car wash and power wash it after. No scrubbing, no wire brush, no wire wheel any way you do it. That oven cleaner is ridiculous! Be care when spraying that the breeze doesn't carry the mist into your exposed skin (I wore flip flops. Dumber than frying bacon with your shirt off).
