  • Join me and my dog Saku for episode #2 of our 68 day wilderness camping adventure. We travel 700 kilometers across the challenging woods of Newfoundland. It's survival in every sense of the word other than the fact that we live primarily on carried rations. We do catch many fish for extra calories later in the trip. We are often many miles from civilization.

    I am hoping for a minimum of 8 episodes from this expedition. This is something that Saku and I have put a lot of blood, sweat, tears and time into. We hope you enjoy the series.
    BACKSTORY: In the Spring of 2017 I embarked on a 700km snowshoe, Alpacka raft, backpacking expedition across the harsh yet magical Newfoundland interior wilderness. I was solo as a human but far from alone. By my side from start to finish was my loyal Cape Shore Water Dog, Saku. We went through thick and thin together in order to travel across some of the least explored wilderness regions of our province. We encountered frequent wildlife while battling desolate barrens, thick bush, mountain ranges, storms, sub-zero temperatures, raging whitewater, massive lakes, the Atlantic Ocean and monster trout. Often we were days of man-power travel away from civilization. It was a big challenge and an unforgettable blessing.
    Newfoundland is the island portion of the province "Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada"
    We have A LOT of unoccupied land and endless outdoor opportunities. The interior of the island is largely uninhabited. What exists is primarily remote wilderness. That is where our trip took place. I documented the entire journey by camera and that is what I will share with you here on my channel.

    Bag balm!
    As Michigan farmers, we used bag balm all the time in winter.
    It’s great for the cow’s teats, as well as our own lips, hands, and anywhere there is cracked or dry skin.
    I wouldn’t do that trip without it or an equivalent!
    I’ll bet it would be great on Saku’s (Canada’s greatest dog) feet!

    Okay, I found the first 4 minutes really funny. When I was a kid, we had a winter camping expedition with Boy Scouts. We built our own lean to's and did everything we could to make them comfortable, for just one night. Before bed, our scout leaders had us run about 3 miles, to get us warm before bed. Anyhow, I crawled into a summer weight sleeping bag, and within 10 minutes ,was freezing my balls off. This was in 1972, and there weren't many winter camping bags available in my area at that time. I moved to Alberta in 1976, and one of the first purchases I made there, was a sleeping bag from a company called Sprung. At that time they were at the forefront of the winter clothing line. I still have that sleeping bag, and it still is good to -30.

    Oh man. This is great stuff! It looks like its turning out to be one hell of a trip. I like what you have going on with this series, and I really like the "On the next episode" teasers at the end of the video. I'll be watching your other stuff to fill in the gaps till next episode. And thanks Joe Robinet for suggesting this channel!

    I’ve discovered you and your videos and watching in no particular order. Watched the gruelling crossing Labrador. Poor Saku and his pack. If he’s not walking out of it, it’s lopsided. Little bugger soldiers on.

Hearty Newfoundlander for sure. Much respect to you sir! another great video man, what series this is going to be ;)

    Good to see a real person out there doing it, I can relate - the rangers thought my gal and I were daft crazy when we did a backpacking trip thru the lone Range Plateau for 10 days (let alone 70) within what was to become Gros Morne National Park in 1985. We did it, nary a sign of humans the whole trip til we hit the trail to the summit. Not a lot of fancy equipment, no GPS, just Map and compass and just hard work. Looking forward to the rest of these episodes!

      @JustinBarbournlexplorer  5 років тому +1

      Appreciate you sharing that story and glad you are enjoying the vids. Long Range Mountains are glorious. I bet it was wild back then! Was it not a registered route at that time? It is now

    • @donjerue
      @donjerue 5 років тому

      @@JustinBarbournlexplorer No, there was not even a trail of any kind. Slept in a cave coming up the head of Western Brook Pond to the plateau. Picking through the woods and marshes was really difficult, and you had to watch every step, because if you got hurt nobody was coming to find you. I could really relate to your situation in this vid. To go a mile in a straight line usually took 2x that distance. Bugs were horrendous too. Lost 18 lbs on that trip, hardest thing I ever did, wouldn't trade it for anything! The fact that my GF did as well is even more incredible, toughest woman I ever met.
