I’m Vincent Racaniello, Earth’s Virology Professor.
I’m also a professor of virology at Columbia University in New York. I’ve been doing research on viruses since 1976, and teaching virology in classrooms and online since 1999. On this UA-cam channel I share videos of my lectures, podcasts, and more.

Fantastic discussion among knowledgeable people, exploring information, not just trying to hear the sounds of their own voices.
Evolution trying to find the smallest way to become replicate
Look at countries that have done wastewater surveillance for decades (eg Dutch, Australian, etc), and switched to IPV only vaccination, stopped OPV, but have continued high IPV vaccination rates. Years later there is no evidence of continued circulation of vaccine derived polio viruses in the population. When they find positive poliovirus samples &/or rare brief population circulation, it's always import derived (which can be determined through genome sequencing, relationship to OPV, & connection to overseas population outbreak lineages).
See earlier Dutch surveillance research & their "bible belt" (with lower vaccination rates), virus connection to the USA polio outbreaks.

I watch this a lot and have learned a great deal. I am a 64yr old with Primary Immunodeficiency as well as Lupus. One of the things that bother's me is the use of 'tech speak' as I was not trained in virology and so terms like 'Enterovirus' are unfamiliar to me and when asked to talk about it, there is sort of an impatience with the idea that anyone who doesn't know is unworthy of being in the conversation. I was trained in diagnostic medical psychology so I know how easy it is to fall into this habit esp. when it is how one speaks to others also trained thus, but I feel it is also important to be able to break things down for those not trained thus. I guess it is much like having to become bilingual, (smile).
Clinicians seem to have gone out of their way to hijack scientific terminology and then muck things up.
Utah has many youth traveling worldwide doing 2 year missions for the church (LDS); in which folks could pick up infections; or students from other nations with OPV could attend university.

If one person was paralyzed, we know about 200 people were infected. How many people did they infect?
Quite probably much more, given that in the United States most people are immunized with a polio vaccine that does not sterilize against passing it on although it does decrease it
Anyone know if other countries that use ipv are survailing there waste water? would be interesting to know if there is a healthy pool of poliovirus swimming around. And I guess you could find other interesting things as well. Also has other countries also had cases of vaccine derived paralytic cases? I guess there could be cases of infection also going on, since you wouldn't test for it unless it gets to the few percent that develop into paralytic cases.
Yes, look at Dutch (& Australian) wastewater surveillance data. Stopped OPV, only use IPV for many years. Years on, no evidence whatsoever of continued vaccine derived polioviruses circulating their populations. All positive samples are linked to imports (eg recently OPV vaccinated or overseas outbreak lineages, similar to this USA cluster & in UK that was genetically linked to Israel sequences).
Note too that the UK didn't have paralytic polio cases, only found vaccine derived polioviruses from wastewater surveillance (& through sequencing determined a link to Israeli sequences) . They switched to IPV only vaccination from 2004.
Many years of wastewater surveillance in Israel too, but they switched back to OPV vaccination due to an increased risk of contact with wildtype polioviruses.
Thank you for your work. Re: the polio in waste water... Huge, uncounted numbers of undocumented people entering the country in the recent couple of years, carrying diseases which were thought to be eradicated, may be the newest vector.
This isolate of poliovirus discovered after causing paralytic disease is known to also be spreading in Britain and Israel. Not exactly known in either case for undocumented immigration.
No, the difference is vaccination rates. I'm with Vincent, this has probably been going on constantly for two decades and only when it gets into people who refuse to vaccinate their kids do you notice
