      I'm just a sine wave alternating between them. I often express my feelings with music, feel refreshed from singing, and I often connect bits of informations to a huge net just to figure out the basic structure and logic of something nobody cares about.

      The thing is that it’s a spectrum. It seems that you fall closer to one side, but you lean close to another. In this case, I think you would have to not let your feelings OR your thinking decide. The best thing for you to do is let your intuition guide you.

    I'm an INTP and my best friend is INFP. We are both artists and writers, but we approach these things differently. I carefully plan my plot arcs for maximum emotional impact, because *the system works*, and I write as concisely as possible. He starts with emotions and lets the plot follow from that, and lets the words flow much more smoothly. In drawing, I use a ruler and references, and spend hours perfecting details, while he makes a quick outline and sculpts the shape as it goes along, ending up with a less precise but still effective piece of art. I think we both learn a lot from each other but still have our different preferences. This video sums it up quite well!

      So with writing you are the plotter and your infp friend is the pantser it seems. As a writer myself, I plot report writing but pants everything else. Pantsing is how I flow. Its soo interesting to see these compared. I've never looked at the writing styles with direct relation to intp/infp types but I can clearly see how that makes sense. I hate saying that I pants. I can't plan a plot to save my life. I can write a decent short story, but to flesh it out, and make it longer? Not so much.
      For photography, I know the rules, but I don't follow them. I actually make a point of breaking them, sometimes. Get some pretty cool effects, that way.

    Emotions weigh on INFP's decisions but feelings aren't exactly emotions within Jung's model. Feelings are rational, slow, and a form of reasoning that isn't focused on whether something is correct/incorrect, true/false but rather how important it is, how much it means, etc. (and that's where emotions play a role).
    Emotions which Jung preferred to call affects, are irrational, spontaneous and closer to perception than reasoning. So INFPs don't react emotionally to information, but rationally, weighed by emotions among other things.

    I still can't tell if I'm an INTP or a depressed and cold INFP LOL. I can't tell if I'm convincing myself and acting as an INTP as a defence mechanism when truly I'm an INFP on the inside. I can identify with nearly all of INTP traits but some of the INFP values too. I get more and more confused the more I research this oh my god it pisses me off that I feel like I don't understand who I am and I have no sense of identity
    Edit: My goodness I didn't think I'd get this many replies over this year LOL so I still haven't figured out what I am sadly but I think if anything I'm a good balance between T and F, and whatever situation I'm in brings out parts of either side (the human personality is complex after all) Maybe some of y'all in the comments can relate to this.
    My final internal observation of my behaviour is that I may very well be an infp that values intp thinking and tries to embody that in my life without realising, or an intp that's just a tad more sensitive and emotionally in touch with myself and others than the stereotypical intp/I value the emotional tact that infps kinda have.
    I'm still confused, but good luck to anyone else who has this dilemma and remember this is all just some good fun :)

    I’ve been mistyped as an INFP before, mostly I think because I don’t fit the INTP stereotype of being a heartless robot who doesn’t compute emotions. I know for a fact I’m an INTP by looking at the order of functions compared between the two types, INTP’s functions make more sense/feel more relatable to me than INFP’s. I used to really struggle to put myself in other people’s shoes as a kid, I used to be really puzzled as to why people reacted the way they did to certain things, both things I said and did but also what other people said and did. I decided to make a conscious effort to learn more about how to read and empathise with people, because I recognised it as an incredibly valuable skill to have. I wanted to be able to relate to people more, to feel more human. I wanted to be a good person, and I realised in order to do that I have to be more sensitive and receptive to other people’s emotions, even though it’s not something I’m instinctively attuned to. I worked really hard to force myself to see things from other people’s perspective, after all, I love considering things from new angles. It took a while, but eventually it became second nature to me to be in touch with the feelings of people around me, and factor that in to my decision making processes. I still really struggle with dealing with my own emotions, but I’m really proud of how far I’ve come in terms of understanding other people. Emotions are not really something that’s inherently important to me, but I know they’re important to other people so it’s hardly a waste of my time trying to understand them and read them better. Now I feel like my levels of empathy are probably higher than most people’s tbh, and I guess it helps being someone who’s super emotional myself.

      I relate to what you say a lot. I always struggled since I was a kid to connect with people. I too don't really fit the mold of most intps. I think on a subconscious level I have gradually learned how to perceive how people feel. I think i tried to practice early on. I honestly dont care much for values i think seeing the world as it is and being a part of it is a better goal. Though I'd say one of my top goals in life out of the few I've ever had is to have a relationship where I'm completely connected and complemented by another person and we get to experience the world together. As terrifying as that sometimes is.

      I relate to this strongly. I'm still on the fence about being an INFP, though, because I feel like this concious effort was made pretty early on, because of my parents' education style. I've reverted back and forth, but lately I've become concious of it again, and I feel like I have a pretty good grasp on other's emotions now. I still have my shortcomings, sometimes, but most of the time I'm pretty solid on that front. Not my own emotions, though, that's still a battle yet to be won, but at least other people's. The thing is, it's been so ingrained into me since childhood that I'm not sure if it's me or just conditioning. So no fucking clue, really. I tend to lean towards INTP, from the research I've done already, but the verdict is still unclear.

      people think they want to be the smartest person in the room but it does get boring and disappointing. often they have to make a sincere and convincing effort to be surprised by other people's insights to make them feel valued in the way they're appreciated. they have to walk people through why they're wrong as if the intp is discovering it alongside them without letting them know that the intp knew it was flawed from the start. luckily we can be as direct as we choose online. if any of you were really intps you wouldn't be able to justify how 'not matching with common intp characteristics' in addition to being (what you perceive as) 'mistyped' somehow still means you're an intp... 95% of the comments on these videos are non-intps making desperate illogical attempts to anonymously prove they are one. often (as would make sense) their justifications come from arrogance (dunning-kruger) a la "I think on a subconscious level I have gradually learned how to perceive how people feel." ... sorry to say, but it's much *more likely* that you're all deluding yourselves and the "mistyping" is right after all

      Haha, I can totally relate and this comment is my second attempt to put things in order. 😂
      But I feel that INTPs have similar struggles being all over the place, not knowing where to start when it comes to bringing things in order (e.g. explaining things briefly, writing essays and academic papers etc.), or at least I noticed that an INTP friend of mine can relate to that. While collecting knowledge, data and impressions by reading a lot is no big deal at all (maybe an Si-child thing), it's VERY difficult to not get sidetracked and overrun by new clusters of ideas and thoughts (maybe Ne-auxiliary). The Ti that I've seen in my friend can also loop and dwell eternally (like Fi does in my case) without being linear, therefore I don't believe that being Ti-dominant doesn't make people think linearly (is that even a word?) by default, even if it is a thinking function based on logic and what's true.
      It's hard to explain, but I hope I didn't fail terribly. 😅

    This question has been tormenting me a lot recently.... Ti and Fi just seem so similar and maybe that's why people mention that your top function is connected to your bottom function (8th function). Did I, as an INTP, choose to approach life in a logical/Ti way because that is simply my nature, or because I VALUE (Fi) logical thinking? It seems to me that they coexist and that one can't live without the other. Fi drives my Ti and in the case of INFPs, Ti can sometimes drive their Fi as well (It seems to be that following your emotions can be the most rational approach in some cases). Anyways, the point is: they appear to be two flavors of the same thing and it has been confusing for me to distinguish between the two. (same happens with Te and Fe). Really enjoyed the video Nathan!

      So you (and two other people in this comment section) have brought up a very clever point. Logic itself can be a value. So that is an issue with the way I described them in this video. I must say, the comment is very logically written/explained. You give reasons for your thoughts and you do something I've also noticed (because I often do it) which is put bracketed sections in your writing just to... MAKE 100% SURE..the person reading it gets the exact/precise point you're trying to make. Of course I cannot possibly base this guess of reading one passage of text, but this tiny sample felt very INTP to me. And you're correct, in the Socionics typing system INTPs will be balanced with Ti and Fi, it would have been quite messy had I brought that up in the video! ~ Nathan

    Still... this is so broad... I think I could be an INFP because I’m not very structured and I always choose harmony instead of fights, but I suck at writing and ,more often than not, I’m much more rational than most people around me, i think that even though I have my personal values , I don’t impose them on other people and I always keep an open mind seeing things from many different perspectives often even abdicating my feelings to make a decision.
    I think that mbti can be a nice tool to know a bit more about yourself , but maybe , because of it being so structured , it ends up limiting your personality too much and maybe reinforcing many cliches that can be untrue to many people.

      I relate to you. I'd say, don't bother about the stereotype that much. I'm INFP, I love logic, science, math, computer. Literature and national language were my least favorite subject in school, and I have a bachelor in engineering.
      Trying to figure out whether I'm an Fi or Ti user was, as you described, confusing. What sealed the deal for me was looking at my struggle, aspiration. Managing interpersonal relationship (Fe) is not my struggle, but I aspire to be more structured (Te).
      When I discovered MBTI, I use it to help me understand people (including myself) better, and now I mainly see it as a tool for personal growth. Like you said, if used wrongly (only care about stereotypes, seeing the types as boxes), all these typings can be very limiting and potentially dangerous. But to know that everyone actually have all the 8 functions, and have the potential to unlock them all, and be their own version of balanced, well-rounded human being, is reassuring, and actually very exciting! I can't wait until we all get there, must be very harmonious world 😅

    Now I’m wondering about the difference between an infp with a high iq and an intp. I intuitively see logical flaws in things people say, and I’ve always hated the “status/popularity game”, and grew up as the smart kid. But I don’t really see the world from a place of cold logic. It seems that my immediate instincts are to go towards logic but my emotions and values immediately yank on me. I’m good at being detached, but I’m also empathetic and very sensitive. And I express myself through art because I can’t explain myself. My parents used to joke about my head being constantly in the clouds. This turned into a ramble but idk

      If you want my opinion, I've seen many people here that wonder whether they're INFP or INTP, and most of them I would say are INFP, however while I'm not certain I think you're more likely an INTP.
      Just as an INFP is entirely capable of logic and might be driven to constantly applying it by his surroundings the same can be true in reverse for the INTP.
      Also having your head in the clouds probably isn't connected to this question, as that's something you're likely to see in both INTP and INFP as it's mostly a result of high Ne or Intuition in general.

      Samuel Maier thank you! Good points. Maybe another hint that I could be intp is that I don’t want to be one, because I see the social weakness as personal and scary 😆 kinda screams lower Fe, although I’m not so arrogant as a lot of lead Ti’s seem to be

      You're exactly like me and I feel strongly towards INFP. I think high IQ makes it easier for us to translate Fi to Te, but in the end at the most basic personal level, we still lead with Fi. Also my Ne is very high and when I'm detached from myself it's as if I lead with Ne (something else that's boosted by high IQ). I love system building and philosophizing, but all that philosophy is at every step judged against Fi.

      Is logic more detailed and intricate and very detached to an extent that it can separate different arguments to their simplest forms? (INTP)
      Or is your logic more fluid? And broad in its scope encapsulating multiple values to mean a certain thing. (INFP, if I'm correct. INFP aren't as "specific" in their logic as its reserved for the Fi)
      Honestly you seem more as INTP who is in tough with the feelings. INFP are very very sure of what they feel and why they feel them.

      This comment! Completely relate. I was initially the stereotypical ditzy, airhead, creative INFP as a child, but when I was 14, I went through a lot of challenges as I had a lot on my plate and I didn't know how to manage it all and was at my breaking point. Had a lot of emotional meltdowns. The middle of this stage, I did the 16personalities test for the first time and got INFP. Cue 15-year-old me and I'd changed a lot. I became a lot more laid-back and chill and nonchalant. It was around this time, l was doing this cognitive test, school was making us to do to assess our strengths and weaknesses and MBTI was included. I got INTP. However, in 16personalities I'm still to this day an INFP (and occasionally an ENFP). Other tests also fluctuate between the two (INFP and INTP). My theory is that I got sick and tired of my emotional outbursts and perceived "feelings" as a hindrance/unreliable/weakness of some sort subconsciously. I think I since then, I valued Ti with my Fi to act as a sort of "shield" so that I would never experience something as draining as that year. Kind of like method acting, to the point where it's become subconscious to ignore the bias side of my Fi and approach life through an objective lens. Now, I'm confusing myself - I might actually be an INTP but with reasonably developed Fi from my childhood? Arghh! It's so confusing. If there's one thing I'm certain of, is that my aux function is definitely Ne, and my tertiary Si. Some humans are too nuanced to be compartmentalised into labels, I guess. I have half of a mind to create a new psychological categorical system all-together where fellow confused INFPs/INTPs can be our own seperate category haha

I have since learned to pick my champions, and mostly do it online now as to not alienate people around me. You may call me troll, as far as I'm concerned, I see this as a Socratic approach, pushing people to the extremes in the arguments, so I can touch the end of their thinking. I do not care about the outcome, neither do I care about the argument in itself, most of the time anyway, because this is how I challenge my own conclusions. I have difficulty communicating with my mom too. Being an INFP doesnt help, lol. But my mom is not well and she's been through too much adversities in life. It is understandable why she is tough to deal with.
      But yeah you're right about the INFP-INTP having like our own language, the INTP has a way of seeing our points, sometimes perspectives and their ability to be okay and at peace with not agreeing with us helps too, especially with people they love and care about (if they don't care or are indifferent about you - in that moment or at all times - oh man are they ruthless! You can forget about having the same language lol, the INTP has probably made the INFP cry or explode in anger by now). When they care about someone, they seek understanding/truth, that is the person's rationale for arriving at their thoughts/truths. They're even willing to add more warmth and heart in their intonation when they talk to you if you are very important to them.
      Most of the time I'm hurt by his tone or why he said the things he said since INFPs are sensitive to people's intentions which can be conveyed in the tone of their voice.

    The fundamental principle(s) is/are essentially arbitrary in a logical sense and comes instead from emotion. Ti is only a means. The user has the freedom to choose on which principles they wants to operate Ti. For example, to maximise long-term personal pleasure is a valid fundamental principle for Ti.

This is why the vast majority of INFP content is like "how to be productive" and "how to stop procrastinating" and "how to stop fantasizing 24/7 and live your life." This problem could affect INTPs to some degree too, because we both have PoLR Se, but INTPs generally don't care as much about "feeling productive" and when they really need to, their logic can kick in to help them get stuff done.

It's my inner hall monitor. She says" hey its not my list, bruh its yours. Head in the clouds? You only hurt yourself. You keep hitting snooze? The lateness happens. Who do you embarrass? Yourself. So youre tired. So what. Drink some coffee and do your stuff. " Oddly enough it works. Downside-if Im flowing with the ticking things off the list, I resist doing anything that isn't on it. Even after watching this video and taking several tests , I can't decide if I am an INTP or an INFP . On the one hand , I love analysing everything , from my own life to scientific and philosophycal theories . I am usually the one who makes difficult concepts very easy to understand for other people by taking a very logical approach . I always had problems with maintaining friendships and relationships because I was too busy with my own curiosity and creativity . I am extremely excited whenever I understand a particular concept and I can't stop until I completely get the logic behind it . This sounds very INTP.
    On the other hand , I am an incredibly sensitive person with a great talent at poetry and music ( everybody appreciates what I create ). My poems are very personal and people are usually charmed by them . Some of my friends told me that I had managed to put into words exactly what they had felt in some situations in their lives . I also used to write hundreds of pages in my diary as a teenager . Lots of friends and family members seem to find me a person with whom they can speak about their emotional problems easily . I don't consider myself very empathetic though . I just think that they need someone to talk with and I feel that I need to be there for them , not because I honestly care about their problems , but because that's how my morals are. So this should be a sign that I am an INFP, right ?
    Taking the cognitive functions test was even more puzzling , since my Ti and Fi are usually equal or very close to one another . Te was slightly lower than Fe though . My Enneagram type is 5w4. So am I an INFP then ? No idea ...

    • @Chaozel
      @Chaozel Рік тому

      I know this is an old comment, but I'm in the exact same scenario. I've analyzed every enneagram type and the subtypes for each one, and in the end it looks like I am an 5w4 sp/sx. But I relate more to the descriptions of INFPs than INTPs. This means that I'm either a highly emotional INTP or a highly logical INFP. When you think about personal values for INFPs, It'd make sense if an INFP could value logical thinking as one of their core values. I always tend to approach emotions by attempting to be more rational and breaking them down into something more logical, something solvable. I often dive deep into debates / arguments about specific things in order to fully understand those things in a logical sense, which is reminiscent of type 5, or an INTP. BUT, this could simply be because I strongly value logical reasoning even though I am an INFP. On every single MBTI-test I have taken, INFP has always been #1 and INTP #2, and my Enneagram-tests call me a 5w4 541. There has also been multiple situations where people mistake me for an INTP. So, as you said, maybe we're simply INFPs with enneagram 5w4, and we value logical reasoning?

    • @hlh9848
      @hlh9848 Рік тому +1

      @@ChaozelHi. After doing a lot of research all these years, I came to the conclusion that I am ALMOST certainly an INTP 5w4. You should pay a lot of attention to the cognitive functions ( I'm not sure if you are familiar with them). Your 4th function( the inferior one), is a huge indicator of your type. All of us idealize the 4th function because it's something we're not naturally good at, but at the same time it's something that we can learn to be better at and it will make us very happy in the long run. Do you idealize efficiency, fulfillment at a job, results, numerical systems ( low Te for INFPs) or do you idealize social harmony, inclusion, a group of friends, acceptance ( low Fe for INTP)? I definitely idealise Fe, even when I create poems, because I want other people to feel understood by reading my words. I feel very fulfilled by making other people happy and validated, even though I don't always manage to do it right ( it's low Fe). For me this is more important than having a fulfilling career or obtaining lots of degrees ( something that people with 4th Te would rather idealize).
      Then it's important to know what kind of logic do you use. If it is Ti ( INTP) you are like a detective, you like to form your own logical conclusions and theories without being influenced by other's reasoning. I am certain I use Ti and not Te because I really enjoy seeing logical inconsistences in systems of thought, religions, even history or psychology.
      Do you care more about accuracy ( Ti=INTP) or efficiency ( Te=INFP) ? Are you more annoyed by fake people/ inauthenticity ( high Fi = INFP) or by illogical people who make general assumptions without having enough data ( high Ti= INTP) ?
      I wrote a long answer, but I hope it will bring you more clarity.

    • @Chaozel
      @Chaozel Рік тому

      @@hlh9848 Huh, that's interesting. Judging by your description of the inferior functions and after reading about them on the internet, it seems like I share a few of the characteristics of inferior Fe, as well as dominant Ti. Though, I never felt like I've had any difficulty with understanding other people's feelings (which is probably just a generalization of how INTP's cognitive function stack works in social situations and not always true). I am a programmer and have studied computer science but I only program because of the creative aspect. Composition and music is my primary hobby, so all of those things combined point towards introverted feeling dominant. Also, I don't really idealize efficiency or job fulfillment, results etc, but I definitely struggle with those things. That might be indicative of inferior Te. So I'm leaning more towards INFP it seems like. Still not 100% certain though. I redid the MBTI test twice (I know it's not accurate) just to see if anything had changed, but I still got 58% Feeling and 42% Thinking. Anyways, this information was of great help. Thank you for the answer!
      Edit: Nvm, I actually do idealize social harmony, inclusion, having a group of friends and acceptance, which I struggle with. So this means I have both inferior Te and inferior Fe. (just kidding, I'm just confused as to which I struggle with more). Also, I am bothered by both fake, inauthentic people as well as illogical people who see everything black and white or can't motivate their opinions logically.

      @hlh9848 Рік тому

      @@Chaozel Yes, it will always be difficult for us NP's to come to a conclusion, it's very usual for our types to question ourselves continuously. I just want to add that composing music isn't necessarily related to introverted feeling. If you are more interested in the structure and the elements of music rather than the feelings evoked by it, that means you rather use Ti. Also, you said you are a programmer, and I imagine that in programming there's a lot of contextual/mathematical/algorithmical reasoning involved( Ti). Also, these percentages you see on those tests are not that relevant, the cognitive functions are the key to understanding MBTI.
      Anyway, I'm really happy that I could help you clarify this !

    • @Chaozel
      @Chaozel Рік тому

      @@hlh9848 It's funny, I mostly enjoy music because of the feelings it can evoke. But I'm also extremely interested in the methods that composers use to evoke these feelings in their music. (I am a music theory nerd). It's not that I particularily enjoy the process of learning music theory, but I enjoy the outcome of learning about it because it allows me to use it for the things I do enjoy (which is to compose emotional music). So you could probably describe me as an INTP-ish INFP, since I enjoy composing music because of the emotions it can convey, as opposed to the process of learning how to make that music (which I often find tiresome or boring). But I know that in order to achieve these things, it will require that I research the corresponding material while applying logical thinking where it needs to be applied, even if I don't feel like doing it. I explained this in a confusing way but I hope my point got across. 😅 But really, thank you for your insight about this! You gave me some invaluable advice.

    I really can't decide. I've got INTP on so many tests but at the same time, I can't completely find myself in it. I had INFP a long time ago but I was deeply depressed so I wanted to check. I would definitely kill if it was saving more people in the end but part of me is not even sure I would care... I'm emotionally detached but at the same time I've always been an artistic kid with a mild interest in sciences. I wonder if I wasn't a mistyped INTJ because of depression since I was a kid, because I've always been a planner but couldn't go through some of them due to mental health. I also like to learn but not necessarily just for the sake of learning. There's generally a goal I have in mind in the end. I hated school because of that (and because it was unnecessary long and slow), I also always have been good at reading people, seeing lies and dishonesty on their faces (or even sometimes just by being told about them, I'm rarely wrong). With time, I learned to let go of debates and I accepted and mastered the charm aspect of relationships. I even consider it to be the most important type of intelligence to have if you ever want to go anywhere in the world. There's no point in having brain power if you don't know how to, sometimes, blend. We're a social species, it's unavoidable. In this regard, both INFP and INTP would get on my nerves, because I feel like they expect the world to adapt to them (I've probably been like that when I was a teenager). I know a lot of INFPs and I'm always baffled when they bring the "I feel that/this..." reasoning into something, because the feeling seems to be their logical reasoning. I do have a strong sense of morality.I always question where my values came from and the reason I chose them (mostly by reading about other approaches or opinions on a certain topic and try to understand how the other side thought about this and how I did and which one has better reason/logic).
    I'm also very empathetic but don't act upon it. I can put myself in the other side's shoes and understand where they come from, often debate on their behalf even if I completely disagree with their moral reasoning. I can empathize with you but don't know what to say/do, and it comes off as if I don't care about people around me.
    I don't have social common sense. I often ask people around me about how I should behave in social situations (not that I necessarily think that people should be behaving a certain way, but because the country I live in puts huge emphasis on manners and respectful behavior)
    I do have a very hard time explaining the complexity of my thoughts, especially to sensing types. my younger brother(INTJ) usually gets me the fastest and explains to others. Even when I explain scientific concepts, I use weird analogies and often do a very bad job at it.
    I don't have any artistic talents like writing or drawing, but I admire people who do.
    I don't see myself as the genius-know-it-all.
    Anyone that has and idea what's my actual type? is it neither of the two?

      A bit late, but based on my understanding, you seem a bit more like an INTP. I was on the fence too, but more toward the INFP side. And you actually kinda re-assured me in that, as I've just right now realized, that I have held some of my principles since middle school (about 10 years ago). Throughout that time, I've had various people that I actually respect, make compelling arguments, that I should basically stop being stubborn about never doing X. I've even sometimes considered that perhaps X could be fun too. But my ultimate conclusion was always the same - fuck X, X is evil, X reminds me of Y and Z that are also evil. I was about to say that I'd bet money on how nobody will change my mind until the day I die, but that wouldn't mean anything, because I'd have extra incentive then (not that I need it).

    I am more a thinker than a feeler, but the thinker side is not so extrem like my n and p traits. Its very interesting. I like to think in filters to observe things. My favorite is the impersonal side. I have values, but I don't like it to use it for the big answer. Its just subjetiv and not the absolute truth. Because I like to use the objective filter frequently, I am being missunderstood and a lot of people feeling offended. There cannot handle the objective view. I am able to understand and sometimes to feel why there are upset, but its not important enought for me. Then I love music. I hear a lot. And its my way to actually feel and not to think. But beside that I am not the great feeler outside of this moments. All in all I tend to be more to be an INTP then INFP. (So is my obvervation, but I am not always 100% sure)

    I think I'm an INFP, but somehow I exhibit a lot of INTP-like behavior. When it comes to science and tech, I have the abstract logical framework of a Ti dom, but I'm extremely passionate about the music I listen to and hypercritical of pop music. I like musical artists with exceptional talent for playing instruments and composing complex works. My taste in entertainment is very Fi, I just love the feeling a really good piece of progressive technical death metal gives me, or a really engaging fictional movie or tv show. Lately, many of the bands I like have been steering away from the style or sound that I loved about them in the first place, and when I see fans comment things like "best album yet" or "so heavy I can't stop listening", I get flustered; the band has obviously adopted a lighter, though subtly, tone that diminishes the energy I got from previous works.
    Poor grammar and incomplete or incorrect details really grind my gears. I got sick of my instructors teaching misinformation and not correcting their curriculum after I provided proof that what they were teaching was wrong. I frequently can't stop myself from criticizing peoples' misuse of the English language. I always lookup word definitions if I'm not sure I'm using it correctly. I hate Apple because they use inferior engineering on their product materials, circuit board designs, and thermal management, they lie to the public about their intentions with hardware and software modifications and repairs, and they markup their prices over cost to a degree that should be illegal.
    It seems to me that my conclusions satisfy logic and morals equally. The only person I knew that had any interest in MBTI was my mother, and she thought I was an INTP, but her knowledge of the subject was far less substantial than my own. Basically, 90% of everything I read/hear about INTPs is true for me, and so is 90% of everything I read/hear about INFPs.

    I'm an INFP as far as I can tell so far with all my research. However, I continually question this because I love logic; mainly because I'm also deeply in love with the idea of absolute truth. While I believe that everyone should decide for themselves how they should live, morality is a very fixed and immovable structure that I believe applies equally to all humans. If there is no absolute truth, no absolute right and wrong, than life is meaningless, and the incredibly deep feelings that I wish to express through my art are all completely irrelevant. And while I first and foremost wish to preserve inter-personal harmony in any human interaction, it still pains me a lot when someone argues a point that is clearly wrong; although I suppose I'm less interested in the logical structure of the argument than in the substance of the argument itself.
    I don't know, I'm confused, and I didn't explain this very well at all. Sorry for all this rambling! I'm really enjoying your videos Nathan, keep up the fantastic work!

    • @9SMTM6
      @9SMTM6 4 роки тому +4

      That you love logic isn't really an indication. Actually it might be a sign that you're an INFP, an INTP would probably not really associate it too much with his feelings, instead he just lives it.
      An INTP usually learns early that trying to impose your logic (in the end most 'logic' is still subjective, as it usually doesn't refer to the logic itself but a dataset that's consistent and allows logical conclusions based on it and what's presently observed) on others is both difficult and often not worth the effort. But when something seems illogical to him he will HATE having to follow the conclusion nonetheless.
      Yeah there is moments where we can't resist, like the ones Nathan mentions in the Video, but most of the time we will hold back.
      Also what you say about the logical structure of an argument VS its substance IMAO strongly indicates INFP. Most of the time INTPs can sustain argumentation that goes against their logic, this is vital to validate your logic. It's just when they're asked to follow through with it that they'll have issues as in the end they validate everything and most of the time the present knowledge with its already many existing interconnects trumps any concept that's trying to replace it.

      Hmmm very difficult to get any clues about which type you are from what you've written. And you're certainly making a very well-written clear to follow point in this comment with a few "if this then this" statements of conditional logic. Also you're low-key opening a can of philosophical worms (can you imagine if worms were philosophical?) by talking about 'absolute truth.' I lean to towards the branch of nihilism that says life is inherently meaningless but, we get to make our own meaning both as individuals and as a... species. If somehow it is proven that there is no absolute right and wrong, message me before you destroy all your art, I'll buy it off you!! ~ Nathan

      @@lovewho Thanks so much for your response! Honestly, I see absolute truth as something that is very self-evident, that we are created to intrinsically know this. Logic of course is a tool, but it is useless unless you begin with truth already, since it can only take you from one truth to another, and can’t produce truth for you out of nothing. The bottom line for me though, is that I do not believe that everyone can have their own values and ethics; since if one set of values and ethics is right, then all others must be wrong. But I desire for everyone to be convinced about it in and of themselves, and make their own conclusion about it. I am always confused about the ti and fi differences insofar as ti is true/false, correct/incorrect, while fi is good/bad, right/wrong, important/not important; that seems like the same thing to me. And maybe it boils down to personal vs. impersonal logic, but I have a really hard time really deciphering that. Is it maybe that the conclusion and the decision made is the same, but it’s just arrived at a slightly different way? For me also, I value my emotions very highly and strive for personal consistency. Effectiveness or efficiency, not so much. I want my life to have meaning, purpose, and value, and for all my endeavors to add quality to other peoples lives. And I also like Davesuperpower's notion that a feeler might even be better at using Ti/Te than a thinker (because of a potential higher IQ). I think it's important to correlate the personality type theory to brain research (neuroscience) and development theory as well - and refine/redefine how we are using the mbti. Because, if the framework is just describing very broad tendencies among people, it is crucial that we don't use it as a form of horoscopes that can tell us everything about our lives and other people's lives (I should say that i am very guilty of doing this myself, quickly assessing the personality types of people and matching my interaction style to them accordingly).

    The fact that there are people who don't function like this is probably my biggest pet peeve of all time. This is why I fell in love with opinion-less languages like maths and computer programming. Everything is described using logic and every problem is solved using logic. I actually didn't even realize why I loved programming until I read the INTP description on 16personalities.

      I think the assumption of having evolved past the use of simple chemistry in our brains is not quite true. In many ways, we are still the children of our paleolithical ancestors, and the use of Fe is not only standard operation for some personality types, I think it is also a mechanism for cooperation. We need to make sure to stay in our tribes, because we don't know what could be out there. We are basically Apes with nuclear bombs. Then on the other hand, I understand how INTP's can feel troubled in this exact world. When Fe causes you the most trouble, it must be hard because caring about feelings is, for a lot of people, the non plus ultima and they can't understand, how you couldn't care less. But try to understand. Since I learned about MBTI it has made me a lot more patient with people. I think this is actually the best thing about it. It helps me understand, not only myself, but also why others don't work the way I do. I think that is an important realization - INFJ

I have strong affinities for value principles, and for abstract communication forms such as music and dance and story, but my approach to all these things tends to be heavily thought-based. I love ambiguity in art, but my fascination with it seems to be rooted in its contrast with my natural way of processing the world. And if it becomes too abstract, so that I can't find attachment points for conscious interpretation (however tenuous and vacillating), I lose my appreciation for it.

Kill 10 people to save a thousand. 2 evils but one of them is the better choice. Now on the flipside when my INFP friend and INTP friend end up clashing I always get dragged into them because not only can I be the voice of reason and better cater to my INFP friend. I am also the voice of logic and smarts. They are both their raw types in the sense of an INTP being far too nit picky and an INFP being far too emotional for their own good then looking to unfairly place the blame on others for their own mistakes, so to me is seems that no matter what I do, I am always in the wrong, even when playing to both sides.

      Question, when you say "i'm a sociopath" do you just mean "i'm not good at reading other people's emotions/ i don't care" or have you literally been diagnosed as a sociopath by a psychologist/psychiatrist? Because i may just be making up a weird theory as an INTP with a knack for psychology, but i have a hunch that a lot of people diagnosed as sociopath/psychopath end up typing as xNTJ since they don't care too much about people's feelings (low Fe), are usually very driven in achieving their goals (high Ni), and care mostly about the results (high Te). After all about a fifth of all CEOs have traits of sociopathy or psychopathy, which is about five times as much as the general population, and most CEOs are ENTJs (admittedly quite a few ESTJs too since they also have high Te and low Fe, and although i don't know about the number of INTJ CEOs i have a hunch it's not that low). That might just be correlation, not causation, but it's an interesting thought experiment. Similarly i've also theorized (again, nothing serious with real data, just letting my mind go full throttle) on a link between INTPs and the autism spectrum because of the hyperlogical (high Ti), emotionless (low Fi) approach to things and the obsession on things being a certain way they're used to and stucking to their comfort zone (third slot Si) and generally being a bit weird (high Ne) and not great at socializing (kinda low Fe). This is mostly based around the lower end of the autism spectrum such as high functioning autism or asperger's syndrome (i have it and i'm an INTP so yay sample size of one) because i'd say the upper end of the spectrum with nonverbal people with serious cognitive and motor impairment should be considered an anomaly and excluded from the sample size (i'd argue the same about the upper end of sociopathy and psychopathy, Ted Bundy wasn't your typical xNTJ so shouldn't be considered). Sorry for writing a fucking university essay, that happens way too often whenever i write about something a bit esoteric, but i think it's interesting to consider that the MBTI doesn't exist in a vacuum separated from every other aspect of psychology, and while most serious psychologists like jordan peterson aren't actually convinced of MBTI's effectiveness, it would still be interesting to read an actual paper about this supposed link.

    I know an INFP that could be mistaken for INTP because of his interest in subjects that require high-level logic (advanced math, physics, music theory, etc), but logic is a tool to him, not an approach the world. Te is like a little man riding his back. He is always aware of this form of criticism and is exhausted by a belief that he must 'prove' his theories by example and copious evidence before anyone will even be open to his ideas at all. Due to his high intelligence and skill at objective analysis, though, it can be hard to distinguish whether his judgements are based in F or T until you get to know him well.

    I can absolutely agree.
    And it reminds me of...
    How many INFPs there were and are in my life. They are so similiar to me but yet different enough to be interesting.
    I wrote a check list to decide (based on my feelings which seem to be symptoms in this case) if I love a person. I made a DEFINITION for myself and it helps me.
    And all of them. Agree with my list. But they just FEEL love. They just know if they do.
    Where I ask myself "What do I like about that person*? What qualities brings he/she that makes being with him comfortable in long term?" etc
    *yes, I got another list for that
    If you let an INTP understand, that there are reasons for emotions they can learn to handle them instead of fighting. I hate that conflict between "I feel like doing this" and "It'd be most rational to do that".
    If you let an INTP understand, that there is reason for social behaviour and it is actually helpful = it makes SENSE to be social, they can learn to adept and evolve.
    As an INTP my biggest character trait is curiousity. I NEED to understand.
    And one of my biggest complex intellectual challenge is understanding feelings.

    Impressive video. You`re so articulate and straight to the point. I relish when you express your toughts about INFP and i can see how passionate you are in front of the camera thinking, feeling, expressing yourself. INFP and INTP are so similar and complex althought little details make them so unique between them. In this lockdown i, sometimes took those mbti test since im bored hehe. 80% of the time i get INFP Type, the rest is between INTP and ENFP and sometimes INFJ, i wonder if is this you case too?
    BTW are you British? Because i love your accent ;-)

    Thanks for the explanation! I was really confused because I am an INFP but I need a strong logical base to accept arguments and sometimes understand feelings, or simply approach some subjects from a logical POV and others from an emotional POV, but with this I think maybe I developed it as a way to communicate and interact better with the extroverted thinking society we live in

    My favorite character wouldnt sign the accords as an infp! I bet you know who he is nathan. An infp will have no problem saying no to something (even though that's the hardest thing for them to do) if it goes against their moral code of what they feel is right and wrong. Great vidya bro I hope your doing well!!

    Thanks, great video. I identify with both types and always have, it's just contextual. The tiebreaker for me was when you got into aesthetics vs. substance. I value both but am clearly INTP.

    In the video, you make the point that both INXP’s are “Framework Builders”, which I think is an excellent way of wording what both types ultimately want to work towards. However, you mention that INFPs create “value-based frameworks”, which I think is correct, but you also claim that INFPs base their frameworks on how they feel emotionally and their preferences, which I’m not sure really gets to the heart of their distinction from INTPs . I think emotions have little to do with how INFPs create value-based frameworks.
    For example, I think both types are concerned, first and foremost, with consistency (which I don't think you say explicitly, but I think you hint at it). With INTPs, its more of a focus on logical and perhaps causal consistency, whereas with INFPs, I think it’s a focus on consistency with how one values something. It’s a subtle difference, but I think it changes how each type comes up with their respective frameworks. For example, I think INFPs are more inclined towards just acknowledging that some values are arbitrary and leaving it at that. However, what can piss an INFP off, is when someone claims to care about, say, justice, but then upholds justice unevenly in accordance with their whims. INTPs, I think, are more inclined towards wanting to come up with a universal framework that doesn’t just submit to human biases towards such concepts as justice without sufficient logical justification. Though most INTPs would probably think justice is better than non-justice and would get mad at it being upheld unevenly, their more interested in justifying justice as a good thing, as opposed to worrying about the impartiality with which the ideal of justice is enforced. Perhaps I’m wrong, but I’ve noticed that Ti types (especially XNTPs and XNFJs who are more focused on the abstract) are more inclined than XNFPs towards incredibly detailed and tedious arguments about what makes some values such as justice, equality, or any other abstract value, good (which is usually defined as that which stands up to the scrutiny of logic) and you can see this in many Ti philosophers such as Socrates, Plato, and even Sam Harris. While few INFPs are complete relativists when it comes to values (as I’m sure most people in general aren’t), INFPs are more inclined to think “it’s fine that you have these values that are different to mine, but if you’re going to claim to value”x”, you better act like it”. INTPs, however, aren’t going to let you off the hook as easily as far as how you justify what is “good”.
    I might be wrong about this, but I’m pretty sure I’m an INFP and I always sense a disconnect when people immediately associate the Feeling functions with emotions. Perhaps F-types can get more emotional than T-types (I’m sure that’s probably true), but I associate Feeling with values, whether they’re derived internally (Fi) or externally (Fe).
    I’m looking forward to you dissecting this to hell and proving how I’m actually a moron for merely thinking any of this :p

    Imagine an INTP and an INFP playing on a Terraria world together. The INTP is the type of person who would dig a hellavator in one of the oceans in order to ‘flood hell’ and get all the obsidian and hellstone he needs for both himself and his INFP friend, and not see a single thing wrong with it, as, after all, his Ti tells him “We’ve still got the other ocean if we need to fish/summon Duke Fishron!” The INFP, on the other hand, would be furious at her friend for destroying her beautiful ocean and- well…. If INTP’s items were to mysteriously ‘go missing’ from his chests while he’s at work, then it sure sounds like he should have used the safe/money trough instead of communal, publicly available storage!

    I appreciate this video. It does bring up some qualms I have with the MBTI.
    You talk about Ti as utilitarian, logical and systematic as opposed to Fi which is emotional and value based. I wonder if you know you are assuming our Modern spirit of Pragmatism, based on an underlying Cartesian foundation. DesCartes believed empirical studies in science were objective and logical, but value statements were subjective and personal. This belief underlies much of our post-enlightenment thought, but it is in itself subjective, and is at odds with many belief systems. Many people do not see values as any less systematic, logical or objective than empirical science. And many see empirical science as subjective, limited by lack of knowledge and faulty interpretation of data. I say this, because some intps think they have won an argument with logic, not understanding that their logic is based on faulty premises, which on the end are always based on values.

    • @lovewho
      @lovewho  4 роки тому +9

      Ok this is an impressive comment. While I was describing Ti that way, and to be honest more broadly, I do feel like the examples I use are practical but don't always make complete sense when they're analysed. The desire to use logic or see logic as worthwhile is, in itself a value judgement. So I agree, it's values all the way down! ~ Nathan

      Correct logic should always be based on reality. This isn't a perfect process but I would say overall science has a good understanding of reality which is why the computer and internet you are currently using is working correctly.

      Yes, if you state you love pizza (and it's true), that's objective. And subjective - in another sense of these terms.
