I have had people argue with me about carrying a sharpening stone. I like to carry one, a dull knife is dangerous. Some say to just sharpen your knife on a rock. In an emergency that is fine, but I still prefer to carry a small sharpening stone with me.

    • @6brettes
      @6brettes 6 років тому +4

Duck Landes a stone is always good to carry along with you most natural stones ive ever come across in the woods or mts would knacker your blade out anyway if you ever tried to hone them?
a small portable stone is not a problem to carry its best to ensure the highest quality type of sharpener as the cheaper ones just dont last or wear long enough some people prefer diamond sharpeners the f1 fallkniven type
      is small narrow very pocketable
this type or a decent length
fixed to back of yer sheath
can act as a place to sharpen
as longs as it can take shock impacts occasionally i had a arkansas soft stone that snapped on me i had to tape it up again but has lasted me 40years!!!
      taped back up!
so arkansas soft stones get a vote from me for their longevity
its like the day i bought it!!

Duck you are on target, anyone who has ever field dressed game will know how quick hair and bone contact can dull a blade, will want to carry that stone with them from then on.

    • @6brettes
      @6brettes 6 років тому +4

      Chacote Outdoor Recreation
hi there chacote yes you only have to look at a professional butcher to see how frequently he sharpens or exchanges knives when boning out or trimming cuts in some busy butchers its a knife sharpen every 5 or 15minutes!!
on a steel or a strop!
hair fur is coarse and hard as is bone
if yer miles away from yer workshop at home your knife goes blunt that becomes a greater risk to you n your efficiency aswell as own safety
a sharp knife is a safe knife
a blunt knife is a far more dangerous implement or tool
because you shall be tempted to force it through
      rather than cut it through
leading to injuries from a slip from using the force?
needed to get a blunt knife to go through?
yes a small but effective means of sharpening your knife efficiently in the field where it is needed should always be carried or taken with you.rocks dont work
      on good knives
unless you live in arkansas soft stone area or are lucky with the type of mineral that inhabits yer area region
so a means to sharpen your knife is a very necessary item indeed on a longer trip
even on a short hunting trip your knife can blunten
if you are processing a lot of game
the top sides of a car door window its edges can be used after sharpening and leather strop to finesse the final hone
most folks posesss a leather belt and a car
      also
so a simple stone of various types that works real good is all that you have to carry?
      with you
maybe a flux agent like gunoil or paste or polishing solution also
to refine the grind keep yer knife looking great also
these things take up very little space and reserves of can be kept in the car or suv truck etc also

      Wild Woman Bushcraft
a DC10 is an old cargo aircraft?
so a DC4 is its earlier sister?
you carry an old aircraft around your waist is what you are saying to me?
      now?
i imagine that you find a spare aircraft very very useful if you are in trouble!!?

Very well put together. The only thing I'd add would be a small first aid kit. I'm always scratching, cutting, or burning myself. Very clumsy. :)

    • @6brettes
      @6brettes 6 років тому +2

David Cox yes dave persons often overlook this very often needed used kit it pays to stash a few arounds not just have one make them compact portable
that way you dont have to find your way crossing mt and stream back to yer main camp for the big one!!
you want an everydaty uses one
      plasters
and a seperate trauma kit for life n death type stuff
      that may occur
      in any urgence!!
keep the 2 types of kit seperate but always within easy reaches of you
the other thing is that if you make up more than one kit you can also spread the load within the same party instead of carrying one huge kit
once you get to where your going you just pool it
restock on anything used from each kit after?
keep it tip top and in shape
theres no going back when shtf in the remoter parts wishing that youd packed it?
it is something that as trauma kit to stop heavy bleeding for instances should absolutely always be carried on you on your person in cases you are unable to move walk get up after receiving serious injury!!
after if its in yer top pocket already you can treat your wounds on the spot without going anywhere plug any heavy bleeding etc

Excellent belt kit Vanessa. I am wondering though about water and water purification or is that in your backpack? Do you always have the backpack with you as well as the belt kit? If not, I am wondering if you have room to fit a plastic bag and a couple of water purification tablets in your pouch.

  • @SCSlimBoiseID

Vanessa, I think that your equipment belt and the things you have chosen to include with it are excellent. With all of that you should be able to make fire, build a shelter, collect water and food, and signal for help. I like that you carry more than one cutting tool, more than one light source, more than one tinder, more than one means of self-defense, and more than one way to make a fire, which is very important. I once saved myself from death from hypothermia by carrying with me the means to make a fire. If I were going to add anything else, I might put in a large, folded up plastic trash bag to use as a rain poncho, or even just a cheap rain poncho from the "dollar store." Excellent video demonstration of what is on your equipment belt. Stay safe out there. Best wishes.

      Hello,
wow, thank you for your very friendly words!
      What happend to you?
A small poncho is a good idea. I think what I use as best, because I dont like plastik.. Mhh maybe a waxed cotton.
      Best regards,
      Vanessa

Wild Woman Bushcraft. Re: hypothermia, I got caught in a downpour of freezing rain and was soaked, numb, and shivering. I found cover under a tall spruce tree that blocked the rain, and I broke off a pile of dead, dry twigs from its lower trunk for kindling. I had some tinder and a fire steel and made a small fire I could get close to. In an hour I was dry and warm enough to make my way back to camp. It was a 6 hour drive to get home with the truck's heater turned up as hot as possible before I stopped shivering. Not something I want to experience again.

I would add a map and a compass to the equipment pack. Your Garmin requires battery :)
And of course a small first aid kit with a tringular kerchief (?) that can be very useful to a lot.

Hi Vanessa I use a big green garbage bag , a drum or barrel liner, heavy duty That way I can cut a small slit in the bottom of the bag, turn it upside down and put it on like a sweater. It will keep me dry down to my knees and it is very light, folds up very small and costs almost nothing. Remember I live in a harsher climate than you do but it is still very handy.Your kit is very complete and well organized and I'm sure great for your area. Nice to talk with you Vanessa, have a wonderful day. Paul

    • @huntshackwildernessexperie6820
      @huntshackwildernessexperie6820 6 років тому

lol I was thinking , I use a bag about 200 lit. but that might be like a sleeping bag on you. Size it like an extra large sweater. The idea is to keep dry and warmer in an emergency to avoid Hypothermia Paul

Agreed on the compass. Never know when the GPS will die. She has what looks like a Silky but it's one of the larger ones.
Edit added: Do they have bank line in Europe? They must but probably call it something else. Tarred twine. Anyway, some of that could replace the paracord and save a lot of space. If you need the extra strength just double it up.

Vanessa, wow, so many good & important things in that little pouch. I also carry many fire starter mechanisms. I call it “first fire mentality” & preparedness”. Your belt is excellent and of high quality. It would be worth the money. The knife/sheath/starter a nice choice. Your belt is rather complete. One addition might be an emergency poncho (large plastic bag& vacuum packed for minimal space ) in case of bad, windy weather to prevent hypothermia & rain protection. Not pretty but will protect you in the moment of need. You’re a good person Vanessa. Thanks for sharing your ideas.

Everything you have is of very top quality. You're fortunate to have access to such quality equipment. I was especially impressed with the knife,it showed sings of stain on it. I remember some of the best knives, I collected pocket knives, were of carbon steel not stainless. Soligen steel from Germany like the German eye boker. Easy to get razor sharp and holds edge long time. I live in East Tennessee at foothills of Smoky mountains and thus the Appalachian trail. Would love to have access to such quality equipment but I don't know if I can get that quality here in U.S.A. Rockford Crabtree

Dean Haggerstrom you have to think about eu gun laws it isnt always as simple as you make it apear or sound to own a 9mm
      in eurozones
you often need valid reason and specific criteria goes along with owning one of these?
a spray there is no such restrictions and a combo of spray or gun is of cse ideal
but gun laws are being tightened not relaxed so its not as easy as it was before to own a 9mm

Hi Vanessa. Great job! I have to concur with those who say having some kind of first aid kit on your belt would be wise. And I might sacrifice one of the spare flashlights (most likely the small baton- put it in your backpack) for that kit, which would be lighter in weight too! I also might carry the spare folding knife somewhere else, perhaps on the backpack or on your clothing, because if you lose the belt, say by falling through river rapids or down a rock face, you might still retain at least one blade.
An old friend once said to me... "spread the options- if one thing is lost, you have two more back ups in separate places". Wise words!
Keep up the great work x

I have seen most of it, especially the belt on you native channel though it is easier for me to understand here. I envy anyone who is bilingual. Being able to speak more than one language is so important today. Your English is excellent. As far as the equipment itself, I think you have done very well putting everything together for what you need. Enjoy.

It is pretty close to my belt load out. I also carry the SOL bivvy bag, a poncho and a mylar reflective blanket as my standard kit for extra protection from the elements. It can be packed fairly tight in the right kind of pouch and off to the back of the belt. Where I live in the Sierra Nevada mountains in Northern California, we get storms out of the blue very quickly and it is a good idea to have some kind of shelter/cover on your person. Loved your observation about a knife being a working tool and not for show. I carry most of the other items you showed and really liked your GPS. I have the Garmin Etrex 20 and it works pretty good for my needs with topo maps and lots of storage.
