    Morning Kelly! Great idea trying to get some morning miles. If you don’t like it you can always go back. Morning light is so magical, I hope you stick to starting early. I’m glad the trail gave you some views after all that hard work. I had a insane climb over the weekend and was greeted with brush and trees. It was so deflating. You guys picked the perfect camp spot, looked busy but how could you not stay with a sunset like that. 🙏 Thanks for bringing us along today. I hope tomorrow’s miles are kind. Keep truckin’ and be well. #giveashit

    Hey 9 lives... Have you, or any of your hiker friends, had any problems with "hiker fatigue or burn-out" as a result of the prolonged mental and physical strain? By "hiker fatigue or burn-out" I mean a feeling, emotion or attitude toward the end of a thru-hike where the joy of hiking becomes diminished, and what had been a blessing becomes a burden. Where hiking seems to become more like a job that a journey. Where you find yourself hiking somewhat mindlessly, oblivious to your surroundings sometimes as though you are are only partially conscious. And where you find yourself thinking more about the end point than the present point.
    For those who experience this, it seems to develop in the New England states (for nobos). Some make it all the way to Maine before it surfaces. And of course, not everyone is affected, but many are.
    If you've had this experience to any degree, or if anyone around you has, please tell us how you/they dealt with it, giving as many details as you can. Hiker burn-out near the end of a thru-hike is something most potential thru-hikers would never anticipate and prepare for and are, therefore, unprepared and unsuspecting when it hits.

    When will you get close to New York City? I day hike and explore whenever I can.

    • @MrSloika
      @MrSloika 2 роки тому

      @S M To say nothing of the fact that there is no practical way of hiking from where the AT passes through New Jersey to NYC. Going east out of Sussex County, Jersey gets very urban very quickly....hiking is not advised.

    • @MrSloika
      @MrSloika 2 роки тому

      @S M There Is no direct hiking route from the AT to New York City that I know of. That doesn't mean you can't get to NYC by hiking from the AT, it's just a roundabout route that will take you from the AT, to public roads, and back onto some smaller trails, ultimately into NYC. To give you some background, I live in Jersey, about ten miles from NYC, I know this area very well. If I were going north on the AT and wanted to visit NYC, I'd probably get off the AT somewhere around Bear Mountain State Park in Rockland County, NY. From there I'd hike South along the Hudson River (on public roads mostly), and pick up the trail in the Palisades Interstate Park in the Southern Part of Rockland County. Once in the Palisades Interstate Park, it's possible to hike all the way to the the George Washington Bridge in Fort Lee, New Jersey, without walking any public roads (and avoiding NYC metro-area traffic). From Fort Lee you can just walk across the George Washington Bridge to 180th St in Manhattan. Once in Manhattan a hiker can walk the Manhattan Greenway Trail (paved) all the way from the George Washington Bridge to the Battery (about 12 miles). BTW, there are only two points where it's possible to walk into NYC from Jersey: (1) The George Washington Bridge from Fort Lee, NJ to Upper Manhattan. (2) The Bayonne Bridge from Bayonne, New Jersey into Staten Island (one of the 5 boroughs of NYC). From Staten Island it's NOT possible to walk to any other parts of NYC. The only options are mass transit over the Verrazano Bridge to Brooklyn, or the Staten Island Ferry (free) to the Battery in Manhattan. Another possibility for hiking to NYC from the AT is to cross Bear Mountain Bridge over the Hudson into Westchester County and hike south along the Hudson and walk into the Bronx. The Bronx is the only borough of NYC that's mostly on the mainland. That's not a good idea for these kids. Three white kids who look like they're from Bumblefark, Flyover walking along streets in the Bronx, while carrying backpacks is....um, inadvisable. While it looks like a side trip to NYC from the AT in New Jersey would be easy, I strongly advise against it. With a few notable exceptions, the crime rate in North Jersey if very low. The problem is that public roads in North Jersey are not pedestrian friendly, the traffic is dangerous for pedestrians, and there is no public camping in most parts of North Jersey.

    • @MrSloika
      @MrSloika 2 роки тому

      @S M Yup, you are right. The AT DOES intersect the Empire State Trail in the town of Pawling, Duchess County. Trekking down from Duchess County to NYC is a distance of 75 miles, it would be more than just a little side trip, and it will require hiking through the Bronx...not a good idea for kids like this. Again, If you want to get to NYC from the AT, your best bet is to get off the AT at Bear Mountain, hike South through Rockland County, pick up the Palisades Interstate Park, hike back into NJ and then cross over the George Washington Bridge, this route is shorter and it avoids hiking through the Bronx.

      It's her hike dick! She can do whatever she wants to do. How about you go put the miles in and stop wherever you want. Why does everyone think they can criticize someone that's doing what they want and hiking there own hike. How about you stop being a prick and go do it yourself.
