  • Roger Whittaker - The Last Farewell 1975
There's a ship lies rigged and ready in the harbour
Tomorrow for old England she sails
Far away from your land of endless sunshine
To my land full of rainy skies and gales
And I shall be aboard that ship tomorrow
Though my heart is full of tears at this farewell
For you are beautiful, and I have loved you dearly
More dearly than the spoken word can tell
For you are beautiful, and I have loved you dearly
More dearly than the spoken word can tell
    I've heard there's a wicked war a-blazing
And the taste of war I know so very well
Even now I see the foreign flag a-raising
Their guns on fire as we sail into hell
I have no fear of death, it brings no sorrow
But how bitter will be this last farewell
For you are beautiful, and I have loved you dearly
More dearly than the spoken word can tell
For you are beautiful, and I have loved you dearly
More dearly than the spoken word can tell
Though death and darkness gather all about me
My ship be torn apart upon the seas
I shall smell again the fragrance of these islands
And the heaving waves that brought me once to thee
And should I return home safe again to England
I shall watch the English mist roll through the dale
For you are beautiful, and I have loved you dearly
More dearly than the spoken word can tell
For you are beautiful, and I have loved you dearly
More dearly than the spoken word can tell

"You can't sing without breathing no matter how effortless"
      No, you don't say!
"you're just misinterpreting what the comment meant, he means the times you can hear the breathing just shows the technique"
Real "technique" would hide the effort being made - it often used to be called 'the art that conceals art'.

    • @grayaj23
      @grayaj23 Рік тому +2

Hearing him inhaling is an artifact of how the song was mixed/mastered. It was probably tracked with some very strong compression, which raises the volume of the soft parts and reduces the volume of the hard parts. It makes a great recording, and makes the singer's voice sound intimate and interesting.
While this isn't the version that got played on the radio, it's still likely that this was not a live performance, or at least the track was remixed after-the-fact. I bet it didn't sound like that live.
It's a great recording of a great song, though.

This song always makes the hair on my neck stand up !! I was in the Royal Navy and at a Royal Marine concert in Portsmouth and this is one tune they played. I was amongst a big group of sailors who were very loudly and happily singing along to it. Who was to know a short while later we would be singing it on the way to the Falkland Islands. Some I sang with, didn't come back.

Mr. Rafferty, I think your experience epitomizes the song. It is, for all sailors from the Falklands, before the Falklands and God for bid in the future; a song that reflects sailing into war. It is a beautiful song and a sailors song.

Having had an ex-pat career, over nine countries and 30-odd years,, and always longing to return to England, I still find it moving to this day. It's truly beautiful song, wonderfully delivered by Roger. The lyrics still stir me and the melody and the message remains uplifting to this day. Thanks Roger!

I remember this playing on the radio 45 years ago as we drove home in the scorching sun from a week on holidays in a caravan by the beach. Parents in the front, 3 kids (9. 6 and 3) in the back. My mum was singing along, my dad doing the driving thing. She passed away 36 years ago. He passed away yesterday 8/7/20. I deliberately sook out this song tonight to revive those beautiful memories and probably to have a good cry. There's plenty of tears to come yet.

Back in the 70s this song was starting when my clock radio came on . I awoke to a flash of a dream of tropical paradise sunrise/sunset in full color and that warm fuzzy feeling of love smiling. My husband asked what you so happy about as I trotted to the kitchen to make coffee. I love this song as that flashback happens every time I hear this song. Ahhh the warm fuzzies …

This is my absolute favourite Roger Whittaker song. When he brought it out in 1975, I was just 10 years old. I didn't get the song until 4 years later when I went to town with my mum & I had £5 given to me as a birthday present. I found the LP, 20 All Time Greats, but I was 25p short. My mum question why I wanted it, thinking I'd be wanting something more of the music of the times, but no, I was absolutely adamant, & she gave me the 25p. I've still got that LP, even though I can't play it anymore.
Such fond memories of this guy & his music, Rest in Peace Roger.
