- Start to finish | how to make your own wood headboard! Including an easy DIY fluted wood HACK that could be added to upcycled furniture pieces.
We used a sheet of plywood, joint compound, scalloped cake decorator, honeycomb sherwin williams paint, minwax cherry gel stain and golden oak stain to DIY this headboard. In this video we created a budget-friendly headboard for a large bed . We did not mount the headboard on on the wall it's made to stand on the floor and is pushed to the wall with the bed. I hope you like it :)

As a cake decorator, I automatically knew someone used cake as an inspiration, good job!
Brilliant! Super creative! It looks great and very spot on for MCM!
Wow! I am really impressed - no one would ever guess it was an inexpensive diy! I appreciate your creativity, your patience, and the fact that you credited another for the painting technique. Great job.
Thank you so much Jen Jen :)
You are a God sent!!!! You have no idea how long I've been looking for a way to make fluted accents to my furniture without spending a small fortune. Thank you so much, I just subscribed 💕

I think the stain looks good. Great job and thanks for sharing the process even the mistakes because most ppl edit out the mistakes so I appreciate that you kept them in.
Thanks girl! I'm so happy to hear you like the stain! :D No prob! I'm glad you like the raw footage :D
That is amazing. I thought it was real wood, my first thought was the cost of wood at the minute. It's genius.
LOL My thoughts exactly when I decided to make this headboard! Wood is so expensive right now! Glad you like the idea. Thank you
This is a genius hack for a fluted bed! It looks awesome!

Amazing result !! I want to do this for my room now !!!
Genius. You’re very creative
Amazing!
This is amazing ! Well done
Beautiful 👏👏
I love the headboard.
You're a genius!!! I have a beat up secretary MCM desk that I'm brining back to life, but the back panel has a huge vertical crack (pretty sure it was intentional to run cords through it). I thought about using pole wrap but it's hard to find these days and kinda expensive, so I'll probably attach a fluted panel using your technique!
I love that you did this together
AWE thanks Rebecca! Glad you loved it!
This is so clever!!!
omg awesome project
Incredible! Brilliant!
Thank you :)
That looks great!!! I really like the color
Great job , I like the color
Superb idea
It's beautiful. I luv the color.
Thank you Ruthie :) The color is definitely growing on me. Your feedback means alot :)
The color is warm and inviting.
Thank you so much :D
I love this video.
I just purchased my first dream home and I was so excited.
Until I realized all the decorating and how I had to fill the home with furniture. Lol
Forgot about that part.
But the look I want is “Boho-African”. I want it to be done in a minimalist way and to be comfy.
I e decided I would feel more complete if I can save money and do it myself.
I had to cut corners on my bedroom set so the one I purchased it not the right color or look.
You have really inspired me and relaxed my mind since I now know I can change it up whenever I want.
I’m going to do this exact headboard.
Thanks all the way from Georgia!
That looks freaking awesome! Love it!!😍
😬 thank you so much
This is awesome 🤩
I am the same as you...been dying to do the wood but balking at the wood prices! This is AMAZING! I use joint compound for EVERYTHING so why didn't I think of this??? Thanks so much!
This is genius!
I love the warm color
Thank you Sheila :)
AWESOME !!!!
I love it.
This is 🔥! ❤️
I love this❤
This. Is. Genius.
this looks amazing! i think i would paint it pink or a fun color but your wood technique was great!
OMG that is GORGEOUS! 😍
Thank you so much Melissa :)
I really love this idea and going to try and recreate it for my bedroom. Thanks so much and wish me luck!
AMAZING!!! Thank you!! 💡
Glad you liked it!
You did a great job.
I love it!
Now i want to make one....lol
Thank you so much Christy! You should make one 🥰
Bloody awesome work 👏
OMG thanks sso much
brilliant and looks amazing! I really feel like the orange tone you were disliking wasn't the stain. i think the base paint you used was pretty golden, causing the red tones in the stain to pull more orange :) that or i was find a stain that has more neutral tones to balance the golden tones from the paint! hope this helps
I love it 🥰
This is super clever! great job with this
Thank you so much!
Nice job!
Thank you
This was so much fun to watch ~ and your creativity is incredible!
awe thank you Sarah!
Love It 😍
Thank you
So glad UA-cam suggested your video! I have a similar idea to do up my living room
Wall. I’m not going for the wood look but vertical organic lines with hand after applying joint compound and since it’s a big wall I want to do it over a sheetrock. I think it could be done directly on the walls but I’m afraid I could damage my walls so I thought of using Sheetrock, that way if someday I need to get rid of it it would be easier.
After seeing your video it gives me assurance that what I was thinking is quite possible.
I do like the stain color but if you think it’s too orange maybe go for rustic oak color. That would look great as well.
YAY! I'm happy to hear you came across my video. I think this would look awesome on a wall. I would suggest having the Sheetrock set up to where you don't move it much after to avoid cracking.
Yeh I think something more neutral toned would be better.
You are a genius
You are too kind. Thank you :)
Thank you for giving me a great solution to get rid of that terrible 90s knock-down wall texture they used when they built my house! I’m not sure it would look good on every wall, but I’ll be def be doing a fluted feature wall! Ty!
That's awesome to hear this was helpful! you're very welcome
Wow!! What a job!! However a job well done!! I love the finished project!! I want a headboard on our king size bed though I've not decided on the look/design yet. Thank you for sharing your journey in creating your headboard. I greatly appreciate it. 😊
Thank you so much! :D So glad you loved it!
I ran into the same problem with the price of trim and honestly this is such a brilliant idea! I’ll be doing this over the weekend. Thank you so much for sharing this! 🙏🏽
Yeh prices are crazy especially right now! YAY! Can't wait to see tag me on insta if you want. @lilyardor would love to see.
How did your headboard turn out?
You did a great job, at first I thought it was real wood. I want to try that. Tips. Used a whitewash over it. You can make by mixing 1part paint 2-3parts water or you can used a white wax over it.
U need to mix the compound very well before using it that takes care of the issue u had with the bubbles coming up.
Love this. What would happen if you added antiquing wax to tone it down?
Wow, yours look way better than the Pinterest inspiration! What about framing it with wood at least the top to finish it off? Lovely job!
I just bought a house 3 months ago and barely could afford to furnish it with new furniture. You give me ideas on how to alter my old furniture and change it up. Thank you so much ❤️
Glad I could help! You got this GIRL!
Oh my girlfriend you did it BEAUTIFUL 😊 Awesome job, I found my new headboard 💕(King size) & it good seeing you & your husband working as a team 💯. Question - how's the headboard holding up now? Thanks
So glad you liked it. It's held up so well. So far only two tiny dings. I didn't get around to touching them up yet. They are so tiny if I touch them up you won't see it at all. I think its literally just tiny paint chip.
How did hang it on the wall? Looks gorgeous as is!
this is amazing!! would you guys consider doing a comission? i dont have the tools but this is exactly the kind of headboard im looking for!
Very impressed. Just curious about how much it weighs as I would have to carry it into the bedroom from the garage myself. Also, I am a little concerned that it could crack and maybe fall off in transporting. Does it stay on good?
Hyy I am from India
I think that the joint compound will easily chip if you sit up against it.. how is it holding up?
this is so fun thanks for sharing!
I Love it, you three are way to cute 😜👏🏻❤
Awe thank you 🤗
This is amazing and I plan on trying it on my own. Quick question, how durable has it been? I'm often resting my back against my headboard and am worried that the compound will not last.
Its definitely durable enough to rest your back. Doesn't dent very easy. It feels just like sheetrock.
Ouf, love the cut in cost (tbh I was debating on using wood trims for my project but this video challenges my initial thoughts)..one thing I was wondering, how did you fix it into place? (I would’ve loved to see a clip of that as well, but perhaps you could explain it with a comment)
a lot of the time bed frames will have holes to bolt/screw on a headboard to, but it will depend on how your frame is built. Another option ive seen done is literally just screwing the legs of the headboard to the wall with one screw near the floor and one right up close to where the headboard itself starts but thats not as practical if you rent or move your furniture around.
Still square? Or did the 1x and/or plywood warp as it dried and aged?
i love this! do you have a full sized bed or a king?
I have a queen bed! Thank you Happy to hear you loved it :D !
This is awesome! But how did you attach the headboard?
Thanks girl :) . I didn't attach it. The 2x4 frame has legs so it's just leaned against our wall with bed pushing it up against the well. Hope that makes sense.
How's the compound holding after a few plowing sessions?
Still going strong. :D
Just wondering how your headboard has held up now that it’s been a couple years? I’m considering doing this to mine, it looks awesome I’m just curious if it’s durable😊
Held up really good just a few Knicks that need touching up 🥰
@@diylilyardor3435 thank you!! That’s great to hear :)
Why would you not use pole wrap instead? Way easier and less chance of chipping off or flaking?
How do you attach it to the bed??
where did you get that scalloped spreader from?
This is the one I got on amazon - amzn.to/3FYHt0p
Hi Everyone! I hope your weekend is going great! I'm finally sharing our DIY headboard :D Hope you enjoy 😀
What were the wood measurements?
