I had a steam cleaner when I was farming 30+ years ago. It wasn't a genuine Steam Jenny like that, but mine worked. Until it was left with water in it one winter.
Ahhh yes expansion of ice with nowhere to go scenario. That’ll do it. Been there with other situations to where I can’t criticize but can only say “it be like that sometimes”
Steam power is fascinating, but man is it dangerous. Even more so when it's being used in something that might've been neglected over time. Its pretty cool that you stopped when you didn't feel comfortable with it, a lot of people would've just kept pushing their luck! Great video as always!
Steam and pressure... I remember an episode of Mythbusters when they removed all safety stuff from water heater and it went nuclear. Scarry stuff when you are around.
I used to work at a bourbon distillery and the whole place was powered by a huge steam plant. When the guy running the boiler purged the system it shook the earth. The grounds were 800 acres and you could feel it anywhere. The roof of the steam plant looked like a volcano erupting.
Good morning. I use to work at a shop that repaired those old Jenny's . They were always sketchy to me to work on. Seemed like a old steam locamotive that run away.
Man, does that bring back memories! When I was a kid right out of high school I worked for a heavy equipment shop that had one of those Jenny steam cleaners, very similar to that and as the new kid I got to use it. Talk about a fire breathing dragon, that thing scared the heck out of me every time I fired it up and it was one of the main reasons I quit that job. It did a good job, but I felt like I risked 3rd degree burns the whole time it was running.
I was just waiting for that thing to explode like a bomb. Glad it didn't! Good call to send it down the road. But what a great video - I loved every minute.
Many years ago I had one of these. It is working sort of correctly, for hot water just turn the fuel on a small amount. If it doesn't light up right away, shut it off and find out why. Otherwise the fuel builds up in the bottom of the burner and creates the volcano effect. For actual steam you leave the orifice nozzle plug out, the wand is wide open. Regulate the fuel valve for the amount of steam you want. Those fuel valves go bad occasionally, I always kept a spare around. I have repaired them also so they will shut off completely, but it changes the fuel settings reference. Shut off the fuel and let it cool down before stopping the pump. These Jennys really shine when using steam on filthy old greasy equipment.
I love the simplicity of the engineering of this contraption. So simple and every part looks like it's an off the shelf item. It likely had 10x more service hours than the manufacturer ever anticipated. Needs a rebuild, but that would steal time from more interesting projects.
I bought one of those Jenny steam cleaner/high pressure washers new about 50 years ago. It hasn't been used in about 50 years. It is buried in my garage somewhere. I am going to get it out one of these days and flip a coin if I should try and run it or junk it after watching this video. I had the same problems as you are having. A couple of things I was instructed to do while operating it was as follows, if memory serves me correctly: Start the water first, start the soap at a drip, make sure the pressure tip is firmly installed when pressure washing. (tip is expensive to replace) and have at it. Pressure washing there was no problem. I believe it is 600 psi. When using the steam cleaner this is where the fun begins. Remove the pressure nozzle tip, start the water running, let it run out the wand for a time, then start the fire. You found out that the valve puts out way too much fuel for the machines capabilities, you can just turn in a bit from off to give you all the heat the machine will take. The flame, the noise and the relief plug dripping unit it finally blows through, gives concern to the integrity of the design and the safety of the machine. It does a decent job cleaning, but it is a slow and a bit scary to use. And those valves always stuck and the fuel delivery were problems also. The main reason I stopped using it. I don't know if that is helpful information. This is the first time I saw your channel and it won't be the last. Enjoyed it immensely.
I forgot to mention the most important part of my long rant previously, make sure you turn off the fuel and let the water run till the water is cool and pulsating again.

anything with steam involved you have to make sure to have water flowing in AFTER you shut off the heat , if you just shut off the heat the pressure inside will continue to rise becoz the metal in the heater and the heat exchanger will not cool down instantly after to shut off the flame ,the temperature will drop slowly , so the pressure will continue to build up for a few minutes after the flame is out. you have to shut off the flame and let the water pump run a few minutes to cool down the metal in the heat exchanger and relive the pressure in the heater

When Buck does a video on a cleaning apparatus, you know things are about to get dirty and fun. Congrats on the channel growth man, always a fun ride when you post. “We appear to have fire” had me rolling.
Never actually tried one of those units, but years ago, when I needed to degrease engines, my neighbor let me use his van-mount carpet cleaning rig. Old school setup with heat exchanger and everything PTO and belt drives. The wands I used had the same fittings as the carpet cleaning equipment used. Not as steamy and hot as diesel fire gets, because the van was cleaning carpets, not engines, but it did work for me.
Danger Will Robinson. Run! That was dangerous and also entertaining. I am glad you too precautions and had it a ways from you, when operating the nozzle boom. Dont mess around with the hose going to the spray nozzle. I had one give out and spray my arm with the hot water. Fortunately I was wearing coveralls and rubber gloves it didn't really burn me too badly. Could have been really bad. If it shows signs of the rubber being hard or any cracking, then replace it. Unfortunately there wasn't much sign of that on the one that blew, but the guys at my work had a habit of wrapping the hose too tightly when putting it away. It was fatigued where the hose meets the connector. I'm only at 11:32 in the video, but we had a steam cleaner that did that. This one was from running rich and creating greasy soot buildup inside of it (for years before I showed up). Love your videos. I've worked in heavy industry. The fusible plugs are found on fluid drive couplings are lead filled amd let go at a certain temperature to protect the machine. The gland packing on the pump should be loose enough to drip a drop every couple of seconds to lubricate and prevent wear on the shaft.
Steam cleaners do a great job when they're working properly, but I hate working on them. We used to occasionally drain out the diesel and run kerosene in ours to clean out the fuel system.
