It sounds like people here are dissing JS Bach and that's not right. They should know that his followers include; Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Andres Segovia, Richie Blackmore, Yngwie Malmsteen, Shawn Lane, John Willaims (both the guitarist and the film composer), and lots more. This is a wonderful and tasty arrangement of a masterpiece. Paul Gilbert did well.
Beautiful. Any real listeners of Bach (whom it appears not that many) would realize Paul really feels it and is playing it in the most respectful and passionate way. I have studied Bach for 2 years straight and he has it.
it's not the same instrument, nor it is the same audience. It should be pursued. Paul doesn't claim to be a classical guitarist, he just likes the melody and the arrangement. Being able to play this in any shape or form is challenging enough.
haha thats totally true, I only really know him from vids and his tone must have always kept me from actually exploring his actual work, as I've watched his videos here and there for years but haven't actually gotten around to listening to any of his real music.
@Dreamscapevirus It helps you play slightly faster as well, and gives a "heavy" sound for chunky rhythms as opposed to the pick directly perpendicular to the string
paul gilbert saw in san diego with MR. BIG every time you play there is something new i like about your musical style specially your clasical on the guitar, at first i thought the only instrumental albums to buy were only SATCH,VAI but there is a whole new world of instrumental great players of all styles which is really really kool if you like music. THANK YOU P.S. "I THINK YOUR GIVING "Yngwie J. Malsteem a run for his $ dude.
@13tynman Actually, what is arranged as a sweep for guitar, isn't necessarily what is considered a sweep on piano. A good example of sweeps on a piano would be some pieces by Franz Liszt.
If you're a good guitarist, your left hand becomes much easier to control. A lot easier, so things like string skipping and arpeggios require very little effort on your left hand's part, because you are able to do it soundly without picking(i.e. just run your left hand on the frets). He's right for looking at his picking hand, because that's what is the main focus to becoming a better guitarist, your left hand becomes used to guitar quicker than your right(comes from a lot of people I've met).
he does that sound he can tell if he can make a mistake plus its the best way to get distortion with no feed back so he turns down the gain to give it more of a dull yet high pitched sound that way if you mess up you will hear it better
I simply love paul. He plays like the Devil, but he is a really nice and funny guy! Have u guys seen his website? Its really funny... I mean... what else can you ask for?
lol "i didn't like the way i performed it so i didn't put it on the record" he's great. but he did have a point though, he did sorta slow down towards the end.
Well thats the facts of life , if paul gilbert does it , you better do it ! lol There are few exceptions to that rule. I've no idea why paul has not produced a cd of himself playing the well tempered clavier books 1 and 2 , i'm not suggesting that he do that , but it does leave questions in the mind.
2:00 YNGWIE LICK!!!!!!!!!! love when paul play yngwie stuff ;D ( no, i know yngwie didnt discovered the actual lick, some of classic musisians did back in stone age or somthin, but i just call it yngwie lick, cuz first time i heard those dimminished sweeps, was from yngwie) kkthxbye
@TheInvalidChronicles And I really doubt that you took any lessons from paul, if you did and he for some reason taught you alternate picking, wouldn't there be no need to ask if he uses it, because he obviously would n00b
Dear paul I'm not tryin to be a jerk or anything but it sure helps when you say the full tittle of the bach piece , in this case it's. Prelude and Fugue No. 5 in D major, BWV 850, from Bach's Well-tempered Clavier I'll be as good as you paul right after the brain surgery lol
I love how the pick-ups catch his picking. Sounds like a metronome.

God damn, that aggressive picking hand never stops blowing my mind.
Bucketheads teacher...weirded to see him sweep..he's more into string skipping..perfect alternate picking..clean and great tone..
Beautiful....This guy is King...Amazing guitar player.
i haven't seen this whole dvd, so i always expect him to open with
"this is a racer x song, its called SCARIFIED!"
Beautiful. Any real listeners of Bach (whom it appears not that many) would realize Paul really feels it and is playing it in the most respectful and passionate way. I have studied Bach for 2 years straight and he has it.
brb i gotta go smash my guitar real quick...
trust me, right hand is WAY harder than left hand.
Paul seems to be a really nice guy.
i loved hearing this on piano.. harpsichord.. and now, guitar
1:36 "what are you doing with my song paul? btw it's cool...."
Just awesome...Awesome to the max
it's not the same instrument, nor it is the same audience. It should be pursued. Paul doesn't claim to be a classical guitarist, he just likes the melody and the arrangement. Being able to play this in any shape or form is challenging enough.
I love the way paul ends his playing.
Most excellent .
I love paul and I love classical music so this vid is awsome for me
paul you are a god among mere mortals
@Jeahbuddy He learns Bach by ear... Even harder to believe
No we just love Paul
@Pactoren
His right hand is the impressive part! Rock solid alternate picking technique
That was the baroque era if you want to get nit picky about it...
Yea I Love That Guy !
haha thats totally true, I only really know him from vids and his tone must have always kept me from actually exploring his actual work, as I've watched his videos here and there for years but haven't actually gotten around to listening to any of his real music.

I could sleep the the sound of the picking.
damn. and that's just one part
@goodoldeal it's the way he uses his pick, he uses it on a pretty extreme angle to intentionally achieve that sound
@goodoldeal yeah his attack is awesome.
this guy must have a great memory
@goodoldeal Paul practically IS a metronome! 8-O
@TheILMadeKnight its the prelude to Bachs fifth fugue from the well tempered clavier book 1
@SuperGuitarNerd Isn't he, though!? I just watched it again. I love it.
he learns them by ear......I don´t want to believe it
@13tynman

hahahahah i like how he showed a pic of that bach dude while playin :P pretty sick lick i must say
@Pactoren They're both impressive. Regardless of speed, Paul's right hand is unshakable.
Oh shit, I just typed a rant at him too... Need to watch that movie again, I completely forgot about that scene.
@TheInvalidChronicles finally! there ya go, was that so hard?

guy makes his alternate picking seem completely effortless.
@ceroz79 thank you :D
I think he gets that sound by angling the pick when he plays, it ives that brushy, nice pick attack .
i saw a chords and some sweep picking, and some hella clean alternate picking.
he does that sound he can tell if he can make a mistake plus its the best way to get distortion with no feed back so he turns down the gain to give it more of a dull yet high pitched sound that way if you mess up you will hear it better
I would agree that his left hand is much more impressive. I'd say one of the best picking hands in the business is Nuno
@brando18guitarplyr its probably the iceman. which the fireman is a mirror image. unless he had an early proto type
I simply love paul. He plays like the Devil, but he is a really nice and funny guy! Have u guys seen his website? Its really funny... I mean... what else can you ask for?
@SLee1337 haha, if they serve food you're allowed in as long as you leave before 11:00am
@guitars357 and btw, i'm not an amateur, i've been playing bars and restaurants since i was 11 years old -_-
does anyone know where i can find tabs for this??
Awesome- like a harpsichord on lsd
god
@YummyBananaFish exactly
back then they didnt have guitar pro or youtube, they bought books and learned by ear.
@Jeahbuddy
fucking nuts right? and of course he plays it like as clean as you possibly can lol
@darc1992 Paul Gilbert simply closes his eyes & meditates for 60 secs and his technique "improves" automatically lol
@guitar789 i think it sounds just find rofl?
WTF the guitar right in the bottom Is that the fireman???
but SS1 is from 2005:O He had "the precious" all this time without telling :P
2:00 sounds like malmsteen
@Pactoren I don't agree. I think his picking technique is way more impressive!
Is that a Fireman prototype I see in the bottom right corner? I didn't know he had them that early.
Bach is baroque.
@SLee1337 11:00pm I mean :P
lol "i didn't like the way i performed it so i didn't put it on the record" he's great. but he did have a point though, he did sorta slow down towards the end.

@TheInvalidChronicles soooo what is it?
0:14
@13tynman :shrugs:
reminds me of doug from weeds
Adam Fulara plays both at the same time on a double neck! lol
paul sweeped..... whats the world coming to
@l1u1k1e2 I've got a transcription of it, from guitar techniques magazine, if you want it, pm me.
it's possible....i mean paul did it!
@TheInvalidChronicles do you know what alternate picking is dude?
@Pactoren you cant sweep pick
yeah laney soundcit \m/
@TheInvalidChronicles so what is it? plain and simple, what is alternate picking
prisFUCKINGtine
@TheInvalidChronicles lol
Look at his face at 0:34

YNGWIE LICK!!!!!!!!!! love when paul play yngwie stuff ;D

kkthxbye
Going to disagree with you there.
1:24 hammer ons and pull offs.
1:59 Sweep Picking.
Bach was soooo Metal.... \m/
The whole classical era was haha
"That was very good Paul. Very good up to a point. Most people approach Bach with respect. Evidently that's an attitude you're not familiar with..."
@eleph4nt Yup. It also just helps you form your own style. Plus tabs are boring as hell.
@TheInvalidChronicles And I really doubt that you took any lessons from paul, if you did and he for some reason taught you alternate picking, wouldn't there be no need to ask if he uses it, because he obviously would n00b

I'll be as good as you paul right after the brain surgery lol
@l1u1k1e2 Learn by ear like Gilbert did! It's not that hard if you know basic music theory on scales.
@TheInvalidChronicles wow, you could of like googled it the first time I asked and avoided this embarassment
@TheInvalidChronicles uh no...not at all...
Its not difficult they are mostly 16th notes with no additional guitar techniques, no harmonies or chords. just takes time and patience.
@TheInvalidChronicles I think i'll just go on assuming that you don't know what it is
-_-
no! :)
kinda sounds like a harpsichord
hahahaha too bad no one gets the joke from crossroads xD
very nice would have been even sweeter if he did the left-hand part aswell
4 person absolutely deaf or Justin Bieber fan.
thats why its impossible lol
