Baseball LOOKS really good for atari 2600. I mean creating that 3D perspective for pitching is a great advancement for the time. Not even NES Baseball did it like this.
My first system was NES, but recently I've been trying some older stuff, like the 2600 and things. Gotta say, despite how old they are, and the really huge limitations..a lot of the games on 2600 are still fun. I actually have a lot of fun with Worm War 1. If I could find this game for a reasonable price on GBA, I'd probably be all over it. Also you mentioned that, for anyone younger than 35, they probably wouldn't care much. I'm 24, and I love the old systems. My first system was an NES, but like I said, I still go back and play other systems that I didn't know about at the time, or systems that were before the NES. The different Atari systems. Sega Master System(I didn't know it even existed at the time), Colecovision, whatever else.
Atari started production on the 2600 right on the line before upgraded technology was affordable, so that technology really held them back. Letting ANYBODY make games for the system led to some bad games being released. That didn't help. But in 1978, it was captivating at first and arcade games at the time weren't much more engaging.
Derek hits the target right on point here. It's not that younger people don't appreciate these older games but it's rather the sequence in which they were introduced to which.
I cannot tell you how many times I've heard young people say older games are "too hard" and "look like shit." Those are direct quotes. Online and in person. Many, many times. Order of introduction does not have to determine appreciation. I like late 70s movies better than almost any others, I like the original Star Trek way more than Next Gen. Those were not what I was introduced to first. The list goes on and on.
***** I'm 15 and started out with a PS1 and I do enjoy games of older generations but I do see where Derek is coming from with this. Some younger people think it's pointless to go back when they have the better hardware.
I don't agree with Derek I didn't grow up with Atari but I had the ps1 collection and loved it although these games are mini games by today's standard. It's more than just just nostalgia in fact they still make games like this for the AppStore. And ice hockey was one of my favorites. Especially fun with a friend. Maybe Derek just didn't master the controls
I've never seen this game set for the GBA, but it appears to be a port (somewhat) of the PC version that came out around 2003, which I have. It has all of what you showed in the video, plus period music that you can have going while you play (like "Eye In The Sky by The Alan Parsons Project and Flock of Seagulls "I Ran"). It also has a goodly amount of classic Imagic games like Atlantis and Demon Attack. It's a little hard to get running properly on a modern machine, but if you install it, then open it up from the executable in the folder instead of relying on the generated icon, it plays fine on a Win 7 64-bit. It'd probably be a pain for Activision/Mumbo Jumbo to get the music rights again, but I'd definitely like to see a version of this on a modern machine. It just takes a person back when you are playing Alan Parsons while working Demon Attack. At least for me.
corsegerspwnd in retrospect I was born just as the Megadrive released, (didn't really get into it until about 1996 though) Played Atari at a friend's house for the first time and thought that shit was nuts, colored squares and shit for balls.
If you think Atari sucks you are playing the wrong games. Actually Atari did kind of suck, but some of the arcade games from that era are great. PAC man, defender, robotron, joust, marble madness... Well you get the idea. Old games are awesome. I bet if you had nothing else to play and you are a gamer, and these old games were it, you would love them.
Order of introduction is a factor, but I grew up with a 2600 as my first system for years before getting a Master System then an NES. I don't have strong nostalgic feelings for the Atari though. 2D game design evolved tremendously with the NES and beyond. It's not just that Atari games have primitive graphics. Many have primitive game design as well. I picked up an Activision collection for my computer years ago and was disappointed in many of the games, such as the boxing game shown here. With that said, I do have fond memories of games like River Raid and Chopper command.
I finally got a woody Atari 2600 on ebay mega cheap and im waiting for it to arrive and im really exited to try it out, and im 27, so Derek it can be a deal breaker or not :P it all depends! about the video loved it, you're always spot on ;) cheers
Wrong big time about the horse and carriage joke. The nicest areas usually have them and the world especially now needs those innocent safe areas again. Country areas are the best places usually to be in to avoid certain crimes and people.
I think your assessment was spot on. I have SOME nostalgia for SOME of these games, but that’s it. In all honesty, the 8-bit Atari 2600 stuff is pretty lame.
I'm 20 and grew up playing Atari 2600 and NES emulation. I love the Atari 2600 but this collection's just bad... like the speed is slow and the stuff are blurry. most importantly, it's missing the awesome intro the PlayStation version had. I played this expecting that intro. playing these games on such a small screen and slow speed just makes me wish I was playing on an actual Atari system or emulator. Also, the text manuals without the pictures are lame.

I'm 14, I grew up on an N64, and recently acquired a MegaDrive/Genesis.

Before spamming the COD games, Activision actually made "video games"... with out any guns and 7-years old raging on their mikes..
I was born in the 8 bit era but I used to play with twigs with fascination and enjoyed them alot
I was born during the 32-bit era but I used to play old atari games with fascination and enjoyed them a lot

Derek reviewing a GBA game that isn't based off a TV show/movie - what is this sorcery?!

I'm not a fan of all of the games on the Atari, but Barnstorming is a goddamn amazing videogame.
Am the only one that plays *blushes* this game more for the soundtack than the actual games on it?
matthatter56 im surprised he didnt mention it
