Well, from what I heard, the Nightsisters also got scars from their usage of the darkside, and one Nightsisters Clanleader tried to ban it, and saw those darkside scars as signs of shame, whereas Mother Talzin interpreted them as a sign of of honour, like stretchmarks. And the nightsisters had a very powerful skill, The "Bloodtrail", which allowed the nightsister to know the position of anyone who got their blood on their clothing. That among other reasons was a point, why they were highly prized as bounty hunters, and they sold themselves out to the highest bidder. They also could craft powerful totems and talismans, and harness the power of the living force, in order to gain its powers, by drawing on animals, plants, or any other living lifeform, allowing them to neutralize or fabricate poison (as long as it´s "natural", I cannot imagine Cyclone B coming from a nightsister, more like a irukandanji jellyfish´s poison), among other things, or healing illnesses by harnessing the Power of immune animals.
Keeping the Night sisters around is also an early warning system, there is no way the Sith would ever allow them to stay, Even hiding himself Sidious made moves to remove them.. and had always planned to remove them, even though he could've ignored them also. Interestingly, even Nightsisters use the Lightside. The Winged Goddess is the one who grants Dathomir its ichor - and *she* is the literal Goddess of the Light Side, while Teneniel Djo was able to shoot lightning as she pleased on the light

Actually they did sort of see the light and dark side but they had slightly different conations and both were used by the Nightsisters under the idea of sort of paying tribute to either the Winged Goddess or the Fanged God respectively
Question: If Darth Vader, during that one particular point in his life where he was in constant physical and emotional pain, realized there was no chance of bringing Padme back, did not know he had twin children, and hated his boss, why did he not become suicidal? Were there ever Jedi or Sith that were suicidal in Canon? I know this is a dark topic, but I was just curious.
He probably was suicidal. Going around doing extreme things. Hoping to get killed. It just happened to be that he’s too bad ass to get killed like that.
Who says Vader _wasn't_ suicidal? Anakin was always reckless but after he was put in the suit he took that to a whole new extreme. Not putting his all into lightsaber duels, charging into battle head-first, going on suicide missions... heck, he even once ordered Tarkin to hunt him down on a freakin' death world.

I think the matukai from legends come closest. they were a society of warrior monks, that trained unarmed combat, using the force to reinforce their bodies. They joined luke in his new jedi order, but liked to set themselves apart by using tatoos.

Love the night sisters there a unique group of force users in EU Era one my favorite night sisters clan was the singing Mountain clan Which produced o 1st night sister/jedi post of the return legendary era and if I remember few of them joined Luke's rebuilding of the Jedi Order wish they would be Re canonized .
I really hope they bring Merrin into live action along with Cal Kestis. A force sensitive nightsister empowered by the death of the matriarchs would be pretty dope. They could give her a green/brown plague color kyber crystal; Asajj uses lightsabers so Merrin can have one too.
The funny thing is that Dathomir and force witches were originally introduced in 1994 with the novel, 'The Courtship of Princess Leia.' The novel takes place in 8 ABY, or 4 years after the last of the original series. They were not wiped out in the Clone Wars; that is a more recent rewrite altogether. It's very surreal to have been deeply into the 90's expanded universe Star Wars novels, only to come back 20 years later and have everything retconned to this degree. Then again, I'm not suggesting every change is for the worse, because it isn't. It's just very weird. Imagine revisiting Harry Potter 10 years from now, and it turns out everything after the second novel is considered non-canon, and the main trio spend most of the latter novels recruiting an army in the new world.
The Nightsisters were wiped out by Sidious, but not ALL of the tribes, and rhe Nightsisters from Courtship were made of exiles from the Singing Mountain Tribe founded by Gethzerion. Both can be true at once
Thing is none of the other tribes are shown in Clone Wars, the dialogue heavily implies the Nightsisters are it. Its like someone skimmed the EU lore quickly to give Ventress a vague non-jedi/sith backstory, and didn't even cherry pick the best stuff.
@@Klaaism Clone Wars does imply that, but since then a lot of the Legends content has been restored to canon and thus there are other clans of witches elsewhere on Dathomir. Which is actually actually a retcon that makes complete sense, because a planet is a really f-ing big place. Predatory wildlife aside, Dathomir isn't *that* inhospitable, so it makes perfect sense that more than just one small part of the planet is inhabited. We simply only ever saw that one part of Dathomir because the Nightsisters were the only Dathomirians who had any impact on the rest of the galaxy. Neither the Jedi nor the Sith particularly cared about other isolated tribes that were hiding in the jungle doing nothing. Also, there actually *were* still survivors from Talzin's clan, though you could count them on the fingers of one hand.
Great analysis. I agree that the Nightsisters were not seen by the Jedi or the Republic as a threat, so they were left alone. The Jedi were a mostly reactionary faction. They didn't seek out threats and traditionally only used lethal force as a last resort. Their direct involvement in the Clone Wars is what corrupted the Jedi Order.
They were corrupted before the Clone Wars. They were stagnant, didn't make the best decisions, and the overwhelming numbers of ignorant Jedi was disturbing he balance of the force. Anakin fulfilled the prophecy not just but killing the emperor but also by bringing down the Jedi order. Both had to fall to bring balance
@@Klaaism Oh the Sith masters working in secret for millennia was the only balance to the Jedi's ignorance, but it was still out of balance because of how long the Jedi were leading the galaxy
I think it boils down to the Jedi admitting that they exist; and the whole Nightsister origin story is a bit of a dark tale that the Jedi would probably be better off forgetting
One of the things about the night sisters, rather than fight against the 'flow' of the Force like darth plagueis and darth sidius did, rather, the Sister's went WITH the flow of the force overall. If anything, the Sister's use of the darkside 'could' be seen as the PROPER use of the dark side.
I think the introduction of the Nightsisters into the SW universe in The Clone Wars was fascinating and I've always felt like Lucasfilm should do a series about them or at least one of them such as Merrin. Ventress was one of my favorite characters in TCW series and while 'Dark Disciple' was a well done book, I think they wasted potential by killing her off. With Disney so crazy about strong female lead characters, Ventress would have been an excellent choice as the main character of a series, and they would have had a logical way to explore Sith, Nightsister and Jedi stories due to her history. But with her gone, I'd like to see more about Merrin. Yet in the trailers from Jedi Survivor, she'd not shown, which perhaps will get addressed in the upcoming book that takes place between Fallen Order and Survivor, but no matter what they decide, we need to see more Nightsisters!
Nightsisters were originally from Legends and the reason they were left alone there was because they were descended from a Jedi knight that was brushing a little too closely to the darkside and was exiled and was eventually stranded on Dathomir and started a society from the locals.
U probably are aware of this by now, but Merrin ended up being heavily featured in Jedi Survivor, and I would love to see her, Cal and the rest of their gang get their own disney plus show. It's one of my favorite star wars narratives being told right now and Merrin is a super interesting character (as is Cal).
@@Awesomesauce1_8_6_4 She needs to be featured in live action films or series, but now with Morgan revealed to be a Nightsister, Merrin will be overlooked.

The one legends novel I believe it’s the Courtship of Princess Leia, kinda paints Dathomir in a different light. That’s how I found out about Dathomir when I was a kid
Your comment about planets with exiled Jedi who had turned to the dark side and transformed the planet is a curious one with the rumor from the upcoming season of the Mandalorian about Din and Grogu finding a planet populated by dark side Yoda species.
Good points! We also must remember by this period the Jedi were fully intergraded into the political system of the Republic. This is why the Jedi also allowed the Hutts to practice slavery and did not intervene to free slaves which they felt was a necessary evil to exist in order to prevent an unnecessary war between the Republic and the Hutts. The night sisters were an isolationist society and their planet Dathomir was so remote it had no interest from the Republic nor was it a threatening power so it would have been seen as another unnecessary conflict if the Jedi were to fight the night sisters. Since the Ruusan Reformation people in the galaxy including the generations of jedi during that period did not experience large galactic conflicts and wars all until up to clone wars. As much as possible they tried to avoid it by sacrificing their own principles!
will you do more vids on these sorts of obscure force groups? the only other group Im really aware of that sounds like this are the Legendary Lost Tribe of Sith
Yeah it confused me too because she is ridiculously overpowered in that game. Doesn't make any sense that she is stronger than Cal who has been fighting for 5 years straight (by the time of Survivor) and has abilities (Basically teleportation and the cloaking) that not even Grandmaster Yoda has.
Mother Talzin should have advised Ventress to let go of her thirst for revenge. She could have been the next leader of The Night Sisters if she would have.
Mother Talzin wanted Revenge herself and control. She wanted to take Sidious place. She wanted Ventress to train the other nightsisters in combat and build her own army, while Maul and Savage build the Crimson Dawn. Thats why Siduous went after her and Ventress and Maul/Savage. He saw them as massive threats.
0:50 No. Windu didn't try to execute Palpatine because he happened to be a Sith Lord. *It was because Palpatine was a Sith Lord, who manipulated the Republic into a Civil War.* He was "legally" elected (even the legality is debateable, given that he expressedly engineered the Naboo crisis to generate a sympathy vote for himself) into his office to serve the Republic. Instead he used his office the amass dictatorial levels of power, in the proccess causing immense suffering across the Galaxy, killing millions, if not billions, driving the Republic to near financial collapse, laying unaccounted number of entire cities to waste, supported the increase of slave trading, extorted planets of their natural resources, and cultural inheritance, sponsored at least one attempt at biological warfare, etc etc etc. He was a traitor and a war criminal. That's why Windu tried to execute him.

This is actually an interesting question as the night sisters did use dark side magic and were known to be pretty cruel to the males on their planet and the neighboring one
wasnt there one episode in clone wars where the "mother" nightsister used her powers while she was on another planet and even battled kenobi there almost being on par with him?
Mother Talzin had a good plan if it worked. The alliance with Ventress by killing Dooku and having Ventress train the other Nightsisters in combat, aswell as having Maul and Savage build the Crimson Dawn. She would of built an army and would of been massive threat to the Jedi and Sith, but Sidious saw that and wanted to eliminated that.
I know there are plenty of lists out there online about the best way to watch the movies and shows, and which Show episodes are essential so you don't have to watch every single episode of a multi-season show.... but do YOU have a video explaining the BEST WAY to go about watching all of the Star Wars Movies and Essential Show Episodes in order to get the best understanding of Star Wars? If not, would you ever make a video on that? As I've gotten older I realized I really don't have a good understanding about the plot line, the details, etc, so I'm really trying to dive into it
Merrin was able to perform a ritual near the planet of Nur. How was she able to do that? Is she more powerful than we know, because as far as we know, only magickal things mother Talzin did were able to be done outside of Dathomir.
Merrin is a very powerful force sensitive nightsister that was empowered by the matriarchs. Normal nightsisters are empowered by the few Jedi Master level Matriarchs like Talzin. The matriarchs pass their power onto the other force sensitive sisters when they die. Merrin is the last sister alive in her clan, she is very powerful.
So one thing that caught my attention was that this video doesn't talk about Merrin from Fallen Order at all. She was definitely able to use her abilities off of Dathomir and her powers have the same green ichor as any other nightsister even while not on Dathomir. There is no explanation for this other than that maybe as the last of her kind she can remain connected to that power anywhere in the galaxy, but that is never explicitly stated.
Imagine if the Jedi Order made the Dathomiri Nightsisters allies, Asajj Ventress, Maul and Savage Oppress becoming Jedis along with many Nightsisters, leading to Dathomir joining the republic.
What if Maul was too well guarded by The Dathormirian society including The Nightsisters And Nightbrothers and was meant to be Talzins successor one day so Sidious would have to find someone else as apprentice instead?
@max males powerful enough could become a modicum of equals. I'm going off of legends here but some males were seen by the clans as equal in power. Luke, Jacen, and Han were all seen as equals by some of the more light side clans for example
Loved this video. I have a thought as well in regard to why the Jedi did not bother with the Nightsisters. We all know that the Jedi are responsible for the creation or rise of the Sith in a sense. I also feel that the Jedi may be indirectly or directly responsible for the creation of the Nightsisters. I think the difference in the two is that the Sith grew to rival the Jedi where the Nightsisters did not (as you have stated). But I also believe the Jedi do not want to acknowledge their responsibility in the creation of another dark side faction of force users. I think this would cause individuals to distrust their teachings including the people of the Republic. I believe citizens of the Republic would look at the Jedi in this manner: "If they are sworn to protect us, why are they helping create the very organizations that threaten us?" I believe ignoring the issue to a degree also keeps other Jedi away from being too curious about the organization and learning more from it. We know from lore that various Jedi left the Order to recreate the Sith. Maybe the Jedi were afraid of something similar happening if they put more focus into the Nightsisters.
The Nighsisters mostly kept to themselves, which was manifested by: - providing Count Dooku with Assaj Ventress - providing Count Dooku with Savage Oppress - aiding Ventress with assassinating Dooku - restoring Maul's legs and sending both Zabraks against the Jedi
Wookieepedia says that Dathomir's population is 90% Human. It would be nice to see these people, their society and their relationship to the Nightsisters.
I actually never seen them as evil. I view them more like the gungans because they're warriors, thrive well in isolation, and seem to have a well kept creed.
Why did the Jedi believe that bringing 'balance' to the force meant destroying one side completely? Or, by extension, realized what the Chosen One prophecy was truly about?
A sea with no salt is not balance, but neither is a sea that is 50% salt. A sea where all the salt sequestered itself on one shore is also not balance. Anakin didn’t bring balance by equating the amount of jedi and sith, he did it by erasing both the jedi and sith in his life, and in death teaching the first of the new generation of Jedi about how good can come from evil and evil can come from good. In the end, Luke took his lesson to heart and created a Jedi order withour the absolutist edge that fractured the Force for millenia.
The light side of the force is the force in its natural state. (Or the force) The dark side of the force is a corruption. Balance means only the force with no corruption Balance=Only the light side of the force
Over the years you have had several closing statements, but I think you have struck gold with the current one: “My allegiance is to the republic and to democracy”
One thing to remember, is that the Nightsisters were one of many tribes on the planet and they hinestly couldnt tell the difference between them. All Dathomiri had similar customs and what not, but only the night sisters actually practiced techniques that were sith related like alchemy. Twchnically they were witches and the jedi only really go nuts when its a Dark Jedi (as in a memeber of their order fell to the dark side) or the Sith Order. There were others, like the sorcers of the Tund, who were mostly darksiders and sith renegades, but since they never went full Sith, they were tolerated and even worked with the jedi kind of. There was also a cult dedicated to revan in Legends that Still existed intil they were hunted as part of order 66 and one of them joined Lukes new jedi order Edit:Also yes the Jedi kind of forgot about them. Palpatine in both canons didnt know about them. He thought they were just darksiders on Dathomir and didnt really connect them to being a seperate school of thought. In Legends, he only met Mauls mother so he had no idea she was part of a wider network of philosophy.
I rather liked the Courtship of Princess Leia from Legends and it's treatment of Dathomir, namely that a rogue Jedi named Aliya was exiled to Dathomir and the Witches and Nightsisters mirrored light and dark sides of the force.
There so many things that I never would have thought to do, until someone told me not to do it. Then I got curious, and things went down hill from there. The point I'm trying to make is, if you're going to forbid something, provide a detailed explanation on why such a thing is a really bad idea. I think that I read a Star Wars book, where Darth Sidious wrote (I'm paraphrasing) "Any forbidden knowledge, is usually worth knowing." I don't know if he's actually right, but I still tend to agree with the sentiment.
You know that is a question I didn't think about. I thought they kinda didn't know about them completely. Like they didn't think of them as true sith. So now I know why they didn't just get attacked by Jedi. That also makes sense why the sith attacked them. Or why they butted heads more. They didn't want a force that could be a threat to them. Also wanted to us then as a tool.
Another thing is that the Jedi could have easily dealt with them if they started causing trouble because first they are technologically advanced and also cal from Jedi fallen order dealt with large amounts of them by himself so a small task force of Jedi could probably do a lot of damage against them
Not the strongest, the most adaptable. The rites the Nightbrothers went through really tasked them to outwit opponents, be able to use the environment and so on
"Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering." ~Yoda, ...funny how they didn't follow their own advice.
The thing is, that even the Sith didn't believe in the light side and the dark. Like, there is no reference to the dark side in Sith code, but only to the Force. And in the novel ''Shadow hunter'', Sidious himself states that ''there is no light or dark, only the Force''.
Um actually... Merrin uses nightsisters teleportation to save Cal in Jedi: Fallen Order outside of Dathomir so no, they can use their powers away from Dathomir. Sorry, just had to correct you.
He said they just revert back to their normal force abilities. Meaning they can either become a normie who can’t use the force or someone who can use the force. The green mist just acts as augmentation.
Merrin probably has a high midichlorian count similar to a Jedi. Powerful nightsisters and nightbrothers like Merrin, Maul and Asajj Ventress are still powerful in the force when they leave the planet.
Maybe I've been watching too much 40K lately but it seems like just being exposed to the dark side would corrupt force users. The Jedi did get complacent but I don't know allowing forbidden knowledge would help against the dark side. Sometimes the only defense is not knowing the danger.
Banishing Jedi who fall to he dark side isolates them from those who can help, removes them from where they can be monitored, and causes further injury by rejection from friends and family. It's extreme and shows a lack of wisdom and compassion, ideals Jedi claim to revere. It's f'd up.
Another thing about dathomir is that it is by nature a very brutal cruel, and dark sided planet. Hell even the wildlife is extremely hostile. More than likely the use of the dark side is just a necessity for survival.

Because Vader hates himself
Who says Vader _wasn't_ suicidal? Anakin was always reckless but after he was put in the suit he took that to a whole new extreme. Not putting his all into lightsaber duels, charging into battle head-first, going on suicide missions... heck, he even once ordered Tarkin to hunt him down on a freakin' death world.
Vader has textbook suicidal tendencies. He just never learned to let go of anything. Including life. Until Luke that is.

Were there any non-Jedi Force users who did training with the Jedi?
I think the matukai from legends come closest. they were a society of warrior monks, that trained unarmed combat, using the force to reinforce their bodies. They joined luke in his new jedi order, but liked to set themselves apart by using tatoos.
A lot of people have heard the tale of Tar Viszla the Mandalorian, who created the Darksaber when he was in the Jedi Order. A Mandalorian, of all people becoming force-sensitive would be willing to train under his people's former enemy to achieve his peak potential with the force.

@@biggsdarklighter0473 The Sorcerers of Tund weren't exactly forgotten. By around 382 BBY they still had a representatieve on the Convocation of the Force on Jeddha, where Jedi had to interact with them

Even in canon they weren't wiped out though and there were still small active groups on Dathomir well into the Imperial era
Were all of the Nightsisters wiped out, or was it just Mother Talzin's clan?
@@kevincloud574 Besides Sith masters working in secret for millenia.
@@Klaaism What about them now
@@Klaaism Oh the Sith masters working in secret for millennia was the only balance to the Jedi's ignorance, but it was still out of balance because of how long the Jedi were leading the galaxy
Remember when the nightsisters almost destroyed Coruscant with an Infinity Gate? Yeah that happened
I think it boils down to the Jedi admitting that they exist; and the whole Nightsister origin story is a bit of a dark tale that the Jedi would probably be better off forgetting
Honestly I quite like the night sisters they're different from the norm
An survivors? Unlike the Sith to bother fighting primatives🤫
One of the things about the night sisters, rather than fight against the 'flow' of the Force like darth plagueis and darth sidius did, rather, the Sister's went WITH the flow of the force overall. If anything, the Sister's use of the darkside 'could' be seen as the PROPER use of the dark side.
So glad you picked this up, thanks for taking a deep dive for us.
You'd think they would be all about matriarchal society and put out million stories about them until it became silly

What does confuse me then is Merrin’s use of Dathomirin magick to cloak the Mantin in Jedi: Fallen Order.

*It was because Palpatine was a Sith Lord, who manipulated the Republic into a Civil War.*
He was "legally" elected (even the legality is debateable, given that he expressedly engineered the Naboo crisis to generate a sympathy vote for himself) into his office to serve the Republic.
I always wonder why people assume otherwise
I think it was both, but yes windu was justified. I dislike the jedi but even i can recognise that palpatine was far worse
Palpatine also made sure that anyone who could derail his election was either killed or otherwise unable to be present for the vote.

This is actually an interesting question as the night sisters did use dark side magic and were known to be pretty cruel to the males on their planet and the neighboring one

As I've gotten older I realized I really don't have a good understanding about the plot line, the details, etc, so I'm really trying to dive into it
Dathomari and the NS are one of my favorite sectors of SWG
It would have been interesting to see Kreia interact with the Nightsisters
Imagine if the Jedi Order made the Dathomiri Nightsisters allies, Asajj Ventress, Maul and Savage Oppress becoming Jedis along with many Nightsisters, leading to Dathomir joining the republic.
Would like to see the Nightsisters in live-action.
Isn't there a theory about the witch in the 1980s live action movie"Ewoks: Battle for Endor" being one?!
What if Maul was too well guarded by The Dathormirian society including The Nightsisters And Nightbrothers and was meant to be Talzins successor one day so Sidious would have to find someone else as apprentice instead?
Wouldn’t make sense tho because only women have power in dathomirian society
@max males powerful enough could become a modicum of equals. I'm going off of legends here but some males were seen by the clans as equal in power. Luke, Jacen, and Han were all seen as equals by some of the more light side clans for example
Imagine if Cal and Merrin’s kids have both Jedi Force powers and Nightsister dark magic. That’d be cool.
“Dathomir? Why would anyone wanna go there?? Ain’t nuthin’ in Dathomir, except fog and witches!” Ventress, “exactly”
The Nighsisters mostly kept to themselves, which was manifested by:
- providing Count Dooku with Assaj Ventress
- providing Count Dooku with Savage Oppress
- aiding Ventress with assassinating Dooku
- restoring Maul's legs and sending both Zabraks against the Jedi
Wookieepedia says that Dathomir's population is 90% Human. It would be nice to see these people, their society and their relationship to the Nightsisters.
It's probably a holdover from Legends when we had light side witches that were human. Some book reprinted it.
Probably didn’t believe they existed. Or ignored them hoping they didn’t bring trouble.
Generation Tech I got a good question can you do why Ventress is a Dathomiri instead of a Rattatak
I actually never seen them as evil. I view them more like the gungans because they're warriors, thrive well in isolation, and seem to have a well kept creed.
Dude, Asajj was a padawan. They had a relationship we just havent uncovered.
At least they weren't the Nightsoil Sisters!

Why did the Jedi believe that bringing 'balance' to the force meant destroying one side completely? Or, by extension, realized what the Chosen One prophecy was truly about?
Thank you! It makes no sense, to much of any one thing is never good.
To much order leads to authoritarianism just as to much chaos leads to anarchy.
Anakin did bring balance. Before him there were thousands of Jedi and only 2 Sith. After him there ware 2 Jedi and 2 Sith. Looks like balance to me.
@@gbladewarrior6884 If only Disney realized this, it is a more compelling story without adding a new force user survived story every other plot.

There was also a cult dedicated to revan in Legends that Still existed intil they were hunted as part of order 66 and one of them joined Lukes new jedi order
Edit:Also yes the Jedi kind of forgot about them.
The nightsisters truly brings the term "space wizards" related to the Jedi to its literal meaning
Good, fresh Sumatra coffee, made in a French press with filtered water and consumed daily keeps my dark side in its rightful place.
Another thing is that the Jedi could have easily dealt with them if they started causing trouble because first they are technologically advanced and also cal from Jedi fallen order dealt with large amounts of them by himself so a small task force of Jedi could probably do a lot of damage against them
Having played jedi fallen order, i hope she manages to preserve their way somehow
Basically: if you lean towards the dark side but you're tribel and mostly peaceful the jedi will leave you be.. until you mess up
Not the strongest, the most adaptable. The rites the Nightbrothers went through really tasked them to outwit opponents, be able to use the environment and so on

Long story short they ain't hurting anyone who isn't on dathomir, just leave them alone.
a follow up on Charal from ewok movie as a nightsister
The thing is, that even the Sith didn't believe in the light side and the dark. Like, there is no reference to the dark side in Sith code, but only to the Force. And in the novel ''Shadow hunter'', Sidious himself states that ''there is no light or dark, only the Force''.
Tbe dathomir witches also helped people stranded on their planet. They also bargained honestly with those who sought their aid.
I now have to watch these starwars law videos with the awareness of bias towards the empire and that scares me
Um actually...
Nightsister Merrin and Mother Talzin can use the magic off-world though.
Merrin carries a relic mother talzin was in the spirit world and I believe she carries a relic as well
Banishing Jedi who fall to he dark side isolates them from those who can help, removes them from where they can be monitored, and causes further injury by rejection from friends and family.
In the legends, witches just kicked ass of the jedi task force, so jedi gave dathomir wide berth...
also iirc in legends talzin was not the most powerful being on that planet
