Incredible, I was just about to post the very same comment. I believe the lack of blood was the least of this versions problems, the fraction of a second input delay threw the game play totally off, it just didn't feel right. The hit detection in this version was a bit suspect as well, I could often floor my opponent with a sweep kick even though the kick was clearly out of reach of them.
The biggest problem that I had with the SNES port is actually demonstrated in this video: you could often win by repeatedly leg-sweeping your opponent. Also, although Reptile is in this version of the game, he’s not worth the effort because he’s piss-easy to beat.
@@Texy88 Reptile's piss easy to beat in any version of the game he's in. I played each 16 bit and arcade version so much, that I could beat them all in 1 continue, and likely still could do so. The CPU was easy to cheese with anyone but Liu Kang, MK 2was the same with Scorpion, Cage, Baraka, Reptile, Subzero, Jax, and Shang Tsung. Hell even beating Kintaro in MK2 in the arcade got easy when you could do the timed jump kicks on him, and he'd fall for them every time, he was actually harder in the games early revisions than he was in the finished game (the Genesis version of MK2 had a Kintaro that was a sucker for the spear, or the freeze, he fell for them every single time).
As a kid I was introduced to MK1 on the SNES well after I had played a lot of MK2 and owned it too I think. It was a bit weird seeing how different and, presumably, primitive and unpolished it looked relative to MK2 when I got to rent it from a video rental but it was an interesting experience still I think.
So I owned both in release order. And I remember trying to go back to MK1 at one point and I remember just being like "oof this is rough" even as like an 8 year old.
Me too. Goro Looks in this Game very brutal.🫣 And i know why! Cause all Characters are real Humans except goro! But Goro Looks real Like the other characters. Thats why we scared of him! He looks real!!!! 🥶
You would also have been scared of Kintaro and Sheeva as well since Goro, Kintaro, and Sheeva all had that second set of arms that could make WWE Hall of Famer Mark Henry's Bear Hug submission finisher look tame. And let's not forget their mortal enemy Motaro with his Centaur hoofs that could deliver a Kangaroo Kick -- that's one of the ways a kangaroo fights a rival -- on steroids.
It didn't have the blood, but the Fatalities weren't censored too badly. Scorpion, Sonya, and Liu Kang all have the same ones as the Arcade version, while Rayden and Sub-Zero were given even BETTER Fatalities in the SNES version! Rayden disintegrates his opponent into ashes, while Sub-Zero freezes 'em and shatters the body, a Fatality he would later have in MK2!
It and the Genesis version were far too easy, even on the hardest difficulty. Of course the arcade version is easy, once you learn how to manipulate it with patterns.
I guess the fatalities of Scorpion, Sonya and Liu Kang were acceptable because none of them involved any bloodshed. Other than that, anything vaguely red was removed altogether to comply with NoA’s guidelines at the time.
MK1 being censored on SNES was without a doubt a wake-up call for Nintendo to allow mature content on their systems, along with the Genesis/Mega Drive version outselling the SNES version. MK2, MK3 and UMK3 were released uncensored on SNES after Nintendo changed to allow mature content and the introduction of the ESRB. What's makes it funny now that Nintendo out of the big three can accept any game with mature content as long as it complies under the rating systems, such as the ESRB. While sadly Sony just censors everything now
There is actually a glitch with Sub-Zero’s altered fatality in this version. If you get the “Finish him!/her!” after having just frozen your opponent, then perform Sub’s fatality, once he smashes his opponent’s frozen persona, suddenly the opponent reappears standing there. Umm, so who is in pieces on the floor?
One of my favorite things about Johnny Cage's fatality, at least from what I've been able to replicate in the Genesis version, it is possible to completely miss with his fatality.
I got this game for Christmas in 1993, along with my Super Nintendo. I know that it was a gutted version from the arcade version without all of the gore, and different fatalities, but this one was clean. They got all of the sprites right, and the sound effects were great, the only thing missing was the gore. Which is unfortunate, but i still had fun with it. I didn't play the arcade as much, since it was always crowded at the arcade cabinet, so i played Primal Rage. The next year more than made up for it, as i ended up getting Primal Rage for SNES. And, to me, that game was way better than the 1st MK.
Now that I look back what the hell was Nintendo thinking? Imagine what this game could have been with better controls and all the fatalities. At least in MK2 they got smart.
This is a great playthrough, man! I've never seen a playthrough of the first MK where someone fights Reptile, but I understand it's a pain to do so haha. Great job, man!
14:30 I knew that Johnny Cage can move using one leg only (when he does his Shadow Kick) but I didn't know he can move his entire body without moving a single muscle.
There's a funny glitch in this game. In two player mode. On the first round throw your opponent when the timer reads one second. When the next round starts you can walk off screen. I've never tried this against the CPU but it should work the same if timed right.
There are some people prefer the SNES version & some people prefer the Genesis version. Also, there are some people like me prefer the Arcade version, Sega CD version, DOS version, DOS CD version & Jakks TV version.
The Sega CD version is terrible, music in the stages don't play the correct stage theme, plus the load times. The other versions you listed though are nice, but the Jakks Pacific TV version does suffer from being too easy, just like the SNES and Genesis versions.
I still have the SNES version of this game, and it's pretty cool to see the match against Reptile. Two Flawless Victories and a Fatality on The Bridge but no using the Block button, not even once, access the match against Reptile. It was really too bad Sonya Blade was denied the chance to battle Reptile in this game since her finisher The Kiss of Death requires us to use the Block button. I don't know if this rings any bells with most people but I found it funny that the sweep figured so prominently in this longplay as the one thing that keen observers seem to criticize about the fight choreography of the MK movie from 1995 is how feeble Linden Ashby's (or his stuntman's) sweep move looks near the beginning of the movie. Another weird thing about the SNES MK1 & 2 games is that the CPU never uses the split punch on the human player at least in the PAL version. To me the biggest reason to play the MD version over the SNES one is the music - the MD soundtrack was just much better than the Arcade original's. IMO Mortal Kombat 3 was the first game in the series that had a really great soundtrack, MK1 and 2 only had a few memorable songs.
The music for the SNES version was composed by Mark Ganus, H. Never did like the liberties Furniss took with the Genesis version. Don't get me wrong, the guy is amazing (Joe and Mac on the Genesis is a prime example, he went with the original arcade music and did a fantastic job with it), but he should've stuck closer to the arcade tunes. In MK 2 he stuck with the original music, and it sounded far, far better IMO.
I recall the UK games magazine Totals final response to people asking if there's a way to have blood turned on in the game. "Do you people hang around car accidents for entertainment or what?
Graphically and soundwise this was great. Shame about the laggy controls on pal and the lack of a blood code. Raiden and sub zero's swapped fatalities are still cool though. It's really only Kano and Johnny Cage that dissapoint.
Yeah, the controls made this version of the game play worse than the Genesis version. It’s not that if the character’s movements and the aforementioned controls even respond at the same time. But I do have to admit that the graphics and sounds are a few redeeming things. And I wonder how many frames per second does this port of MK1 run at…
Snes was the best version.and the first one I played at a friend's around 9yrs old .. The sounds and music sounded so authentic as well as the real feel to it..and it had an eerieness no other system captured. .imo
Man. You can really tell there's some spitefulness in Nintendo forcibly removing the gore with how crusty the presentation is compared to the Genesis. Good thing Nintendo wised up and left them alone after that.
If Nintendo wouldn't have bitched out and put the blood and kept the original fatalities in the game then it wouldve been far and away one of the best home ports
Christian Henson Yeah but then we would never have the edited fatalities. I was actually glad Sub Zero's freeze fatality made it into MKII instead of the cheesy spine rip.
The Heart Attack Kick 😂😂😂😂 To this day I always wonder if Nintendo decided to make the uncensored version of MK. Everything will be so different today! But still back in the 90s it was so much fun renting the SNES game and playing it for hours. 😊😊😊😊😊😊
They should have released or should release a special edition MK1 SNES version where they fixed some of the things that was subpar or that was not liked about the SNES version. Like have blood, have the original fatalities, even add a second fatality for each character, and can be the genesis and snes fatality included, the movement and one second delay laggy controls be fixed and corrected and have the game as fast as mk2 gameplay, have the roundhouse high kick send the player across the screen as mk2. It would be neat even MK 1 was rereleased as an expanded edition like contain on all the things previously mentioned and include arcade graphics and sound, add some new levels with original mk1 background styles to expand the game, even add movement or add neat visuals like have the stages daytime then when it’s replayed it’s a night time version of the levels, have the option to include Shao Kahn as the announcer instead of arcade Shang tsung, add and improve the character grunts and yells, include more special moves for each, add reptile to the roster, maybe even Jade, have a special cheat code to play as Shang Tsung or included in character select screen as well, heck even be bold and add Jax as a character as initially intended with his original yellow karate uniform, etc. so much shit can be done and make mk1 and hit again and sought after and reignite interest in the classic mk series
I remember back when the came out trying so many rumored "blood codes" and cheats at the menu praying it would work, then finally resigning to the fact there is no way to have blood and the real fatalities. I still played the hell out of this, but it truly ruined the game that was otherwise the most accurate to the arcade in terms of sound and graphics. MK2 on SNES did redeem it though. It was legit.
Such a hard series to go back to, especially the 16 bit versions of this game. Once you play the SNK fighters (KoF, Sam Sho, Fatal Fury, Last Blade), the Capcom SF Alpha games, Darkstalkers, and the Versus games, as well as Pocket Fighter, just can't go back to this series.
Cage's fatality was ridiculous 1 his foot vanishes before the move is done and where the foot even go did it go through him in a censored way but besides that this game is great and it was a great port infront of the genisis.
game still looks and sounds amazing, I prefer this animation technique, a series of photos of real martial artists doing moves..whatever it's called..and with that creepy music, soo good
Chunky's Page I was using a PS4 pad to play this. I used to have issues with that too, but it didn't pose much difficulty this time. Maybe im just way better at hypermashing now than I was as a kid? lol
I used to wear one fingerless cotton glove at the arcade to get the full Yamazaki combo. It helps to mash. Shaaaahhh!!!!! I suck at MvC2 but it helps for the hyper viper beam.
I remember buying this on the SNES,I played it all day & all night, only thing disappointed was no blood,I payed £60 & no blood, then I found a chest to put blood on,yes it worked but the blood is green not red sadly
chuckobscure Nah, I haven't touched it. I have it on Steam, but I have to admit, the whole indie/retro pixel-art modern games don't really appeal to me in the slightest. Occasionally I'll play one, but it's rare that I do.
Grew up with this version. Played the Mega Drive version once and instant liked that one better than the SNES. Blood code and controls that actually respond just win it... Nothing holds a candle to the arcade version, though!
Neither version is all that hard to control, got to the point I could easily 1 credit both 16 bit ports relatively easy and often. Eventually started 1 crediting the arcade version as well as you could cheese the CPU with certain patterns on all versions but the terrible handheld versions.
I had this on my SNES and my Friend had the Sega Version with code for Blood but i liked my version because even though the finishing moves weren't bloody they were way more creative
Even though gore was a major part of the game, it is not the most important aspect. That is the characters and gameplay. And the snes exceeds in this part. Plus, if you didn’t know the code for the mega drive port, you get a game with censors that are arguably worse than the snes. So the mega drive has a more recognisable aspect of the game, but the snes is better overall.

I recall the UK games magazine Totals final response to people asking if there's a way to have blood turned on in the game.
"Do you people hang around car accidents for entertainment or what?
Lol
The game that made me dreamt and visit Japan when I was 12yrs old. I live in Japan now 🇯🇵✌🏼✌🏼✌🏼
"Why do you want to move to Japan? Is it because anime?"
"No, because I want to uppercut people into a pit of spikes."
And I wonder how many frames per second does this port of MK1 run at…
one of the best videogames ever made👍🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
7:32 Superman toss
i like how Johnny very politely scooches over so prince Goro can stand beside him.
Snes was the best version.and the first one I played at a friend's around 9yrs old .. The sounds and music sounded so authentic as well as the real feel to it..and it had an eerieness no other system captured. .imo
Nintendo needs to put scorpion in SSBU.
YES.
That can’t. Smash is for kids. Mortal kombat is for adults.
@@patrickstar5090 Plus, MK kinda has their own Smash with 11. Y'know... with all the guest characters.
@@rubberballoonlover5471 They've had guest characters in MK9 and MKX
@@stressedrex I know. It just seems that half of MK11's roster are guest fighters.
I was never able to play this game by myself as a kid lol it creeped me out. I did love playing with friends tho.
I did not know that reptile was on a secret stage
the sound of the sweep is just "rohmp huah rohmp huah"
Never thought there would be a mortal kombat without gore
The definitive game that made me get a Sega Genesis.
It still was nothing like the arcade. Sega felt like doing, whatever THEY felt like doing. I even had the Sega CD, which was terrible too.
This version was superior to the SEGA, but the SNES just didn't have the ABACABB magic.
@@Ryoko453 The freeze fatality is cool but I think the spine rip is probably the most iconic of the original game.
The snes version is my favorite
Had this version not been censored it would have easily been considered the superior console port.
The Heart Attack Kick 😂😂😂😂
To this day I always wonder if Nintendo decided to make the uncensored version of MK.
That's rich coming from a megalomaniacal dictator
Such a hard series to go back to, especially the 16 bit versions of this game. Once you play the SNK fighters (KoF, Sam Sho, Fatal Fury, Last Blade), the Capcom SF Alpha games, Darkstalkers, and the Versus games, as well as Pocket Fighter, just can't go back to this series.
Good for you loser. Nothing touching MK. Without fatalities the fighting gets boring. Keep arguing your opinion as fact.
Where it all began.
What version is this? My super Nintendo had fatality
Looks and sounds great; I couldn't wait to play it, but once I returned this and got the Genesis version, there was NO looking back.
Genesis version looked and sounded awful. The blood was there but was so comically terrible looking. And the sound was worse.
Genesis version is crap but low IQ players still prefer Genesis version
Recuerdos legendarios de la super nintendo 😎
Tienes razón
Cage's fatality was ridiculous 1 his foot vanishes before the move is done and where the foot even go did it go through him in a censored way but besides that this game is great and it was a great port infront of the genisis.
game still looks and sounds amazing, I prefer this animation technique, a series of photos of real martial artists doing moves..whatever it's called..and with that creepy music, soo good
Shit looks terrible now lol 😂
I swear these CPUs were made in hell. I play on easiest and they still kick my ass on the endurances. They block everything and throw me.
Ah yes! Spamming the sweep!
This game was a blood drop away from being one of the best console games ever released..
If they had a better control scheme and maybe even a blood code this would probably be the best port of mortal kombat that came out back in the day
How did you break the anvil?! Do you have a joystick? I never even got close.
Like the fight against Rayden how the guy in the chair head moved with the fight
I know they wish they could have a do over with this one .
I don’t like how the announcer is delayed when it announces the name
6:13 thuuuuuun. No music but one solo piano thud
I remember buying this on the SNES,I played it all day & all night, only thing disappointed was no blood,I payed £60 & no blood, then I found a chest to put blood on,yes it worked but the blood is green not red sadly
60 quid? Wut?
I like his shadow kick
If this had all the blood and the true fatalities the SNES would have been the definitive port over Sega.
Far more superior than the sega version, regardless of the blood and fatality difference..
Lmaooo I remember always jocking for position for the edge so I could uppercut my cousin off of it and into the spikes 🤣🤣
2 on SNES is still my favorite by far.
BTW NintendoComplete, have you played Shovel Knight yet?
chuckobscure Nah, I haven't touched it. I have it on Steam, but I have to admit, the whole indie/retro pixel-art modern games don't really appeal to me in the slightest. Occasionally I'll play one, but it's rare that I do.
This one is different, trust me. :)
Is this game on Nintendo switch?
No Blood.
No Fatalities.
Janky, Delayed Controls.
Another time the Genesis beat the Super Nintendo.
I agree about the controls. MK1 is painful to play on SNES.
The best port of Mortal Kombat on the mighty SNES
I remember playing back in the days so wanting BLOOD bad AF.
I had this on my SNES and my Friend had the Sega Version with code for Blood but i liked my version because even though the finishing moves weren't bloody they were way more creative
Graphix and sound on
SNES was SOOO much better than SEGA. SEGA played quicker but was so hard to look at and listen to
Jesus the lag and the awkward phisics in this version is unplayable for me. Now genesis has the improved hack with the voices and improved scenarios
16:34 Damn.. Shang stole his own soul
There only 4 fatalies is Raiden Scorpion Sub-Zero Lui Kang and also as well The Pit
