That one was super epic in the arcade. When the game was released in the arcade with crowds of people, everyone went bonkers on that fatality. I wish the ports would have had it just as bloody.
I got a Sega Genesis to play MK1 uncensored, then ended up buying the SNES version of MK2. I still remember seeing the Playstation demo with MK3 going when I worked at Target. This franchise had a HUGE effect on the industry.
No joke, back when I was 14 we had to do a lecture in school about violence and my friend and I had chosen Violence in Video Games. We spent two days cutting several fatalities with VHS. Then we showed 3 games that were violent at that time. The last one were the MK Scenes and the teacher almost vomited. OMG for us it was no big deal.
I liked how 1 and 2, they kept the fatalities brutal and sometimes horrifying. Then in 3 they just went full silly with exploding extra limbs and stuff.
Mk3 was a lazy cash grab. So were UMK3 and MKT. They had the base for a damned good game with MK3, improved it slightly with UMK3, then with MKT... but none of them were up to par, as has been made evident by the numerous MUGEN MK projects which have since fixed it... but Midway was faltering back then... they rushed through MK3, then just kept re-releasing it with a few extra fighters and modes... it was obvious to me even back then.
I’ll never forget this games release. I was a teenager and played this game hardcore in the arcade. I preordered for SNES and the store got the game in a day before it’s official release and I was one of the few lucky ones to get it the evening before its official release date. (My dad brought it home to me at 9pm). Let’s just say, I was so blown away how good it turned out to be that I was up till almost 3am playing it. I absolutely loved the SNES port. I don’t mean any offense to Genesis lovers but I bought that version a week later and I hated it. I saw the upsides it had but I noticed too many downsides and I just couldn’t enjoy it as much as I did on SNES.
Kung Lao’s fatality when you throw the hat to cut off the head took some timing. You had to press UP after the throw perfectly timed to have it work. A lot of other fatalities required holding buttons during the match as well. These fatalities were insane at the time
the old fatalities really showed you could do more with less. they arent over the top torture porn like a lot of the new ones and still made sense for most of the characters. it got across the point that once someone dropped their guard to injury, they could be killed very quickly
This game scared me as a little kid in the early 90s. The creepy Outworld setting, especially the Living Forest and the Deadpool (the damn skeleton floating in the acid always freaked me out), Baraka; and the violent fatalities. Gave me nightmares, man.

I seem to recall this one being titled "Blow Job" and being absolutely terrified my parents would accidentally read it and take it away😂

I really liked Johnny Cage's rip in half finishing move and Liu Kang's dragon 🐉 morph. I had to go to summer school in high school my Junior year in 1996 because I was addicted to MK II on SNES but I enjoyed playing the video game. 🎮
Kitana's Kiss of Death, where the guy explodes, was the center of a still-so-funny joke to me and my brother - like what if Nintendo never lifted the blood ban on Mortal Kombat II but kept the fatalities the same? Years ago, my cousin bought a bootleg copy of Mortal Kombat 2 for the Super Nintendo where you can do the fatality straight away. But once you do, you have to wait until time runs out to play the next match.
Twenty eight years old, MK2 was my first for the arcade. My mom was the best MK player to ever do it. I still haven't seen anyone as dope as her. Johnny Cage and Scorpion were her mains, but she was good with EVERYONE. 😂 She spared no mercy.
I remember i used to play this game on the old SNES back in 2001 or 2002 as a 8 year old my brother i think got a used SNES for his 10th or 11th birthday that year from a pawnshop and it came with a couple of games like MK2 and Super Mario World but never knew how to do Fatalities
My brother and I used to play this all day and night when we were kids. My dad sometimes played with us, and he only ever used Raiden or Kung Lao, whom he called "Big Hat Guy". One day my Dad beat the heck out of me with Kung Lao, and finished the fight with the cut-in-half fatality. This happened some 25 years ago, and it's one of my fondest memories. At that moment I knew I was the son of a god.
I remember when I was young and had no fatality codes. I’d press random buttons to try to get one to work. I may have managed two out of 1,000 tries. When those two happened they simply blew my mind and my friends never believed me. Such simple times back then
You left out Johnny Cage’s secret upper cut Fatality. The one where he uppercuts three times and knocks off three heads. And the Fergality. That one was brutal.

When I was 8, I played this MK2 for the first time in a bowling alley just mashing buttons. Never played anything more violent than Karate Fighters / Champion whatever it was on the old NES. I was just mashing buttons and ended up doing the dragon fatality on my opponent. OMG I was like WTF!!! That got me hooked on Mortal Kombat ever since. 🤣🤟

I can’t describe how exciting it was back in the 90s when they started making video games that had blood to go along with the violence.

I was just mashing buttons and ended up doing the dragon fatality on my opponent. OMG I was like WTF!!! That got me hooked on Mortal Kombat ever since. 🤣🤟
