      Not sure if changing marketing demographics was as much of a "move more units" as it was a "liquidation" tactic to capitalize on "the cultured ones." Probably fairly low production costs for the software, but just enough to move a few remaining consoles instead of scrapping them. What a fun dive into another obscure platform! Thanks, Lady Decade!

    The Playdia - I remember seeing one as a kid and was blown away by the Dragonball FMV game. Was so tempted to ask for one as a Christmas present but decided to hold off to see if it would have a nice RPG library. Glad I did. :)

    Some info I like to share. The old toy commercials featured here are from Tokusatsu Hero shows were Hikari Sentai Maskman and Uchuu Keiji Sharivan. The 3 ladies were voice actresses and among them were Rica Fukami known for her dubbing Minako Aino/Sailor Venus of the Sailormoon Anime(OG) series.

    I used to love the handheld Zaxon game by Bandai growing up. It had something unique for the time which was a dual phase screen for a different scenario entirely where you had to take out ships in the first part then tanks in the 2nd part. Sadly i sold it to my mate's mum not knowing it would have future worth lol

      I was a contractor at Apple during the exact time window of the Pippin. Apple was a total mess at the time, Jobs hadn't come back (or at least wasn't yet being public about it) and accomplishing ANYTHING within the company (at least as a QA tester which is what I was), was essentially impossible. It was all red tape and middle management. Like Dilbert's worst nightmare. We were just trying to ship the Powermac 9600s which were massive beige boxes with zero personality or "cool" factor to them (although personally a an audio/video creator at the time, I thought they were fantastic machines) and Apple was pretty much just a drone factory... show up, put in 8 hours, go home, repeat. It sucked! LOL But it was the perfect time to buy Apple stock at I believe it was $12/share. I bought precisely zero shares. Le sigh.

    • @oyo74
      @oyo74 2 роки тому

      Exact. Apple wasn't in such a good position during that time period. Pippin was launched in 1996. Steve Jobs returned to "help" (save) Apple in 1997 with a focus on returning profitability to Apple.

    It wasn't that they didn't care about education in the West. There wasn't the same market because personal computer ownership was far higher. This is the market where a school teacher in 1982 had taught herself to program her Apple ][ and started a company with her husband that made them billionaires by the late 90s. Though there were plenty of dedicated educational devices. Texas Instruments made a wide array of such items going back to the late 70s, along with several other companies.

    You look at the controller and can immediately see that they were only thinking about video playback and FMV games. They stupidly limited themselves. They should have added about 3 more buttons.
    I look forward to seeing your review of the Pippin. I hope you don't trash it though, because it was actually a pretty good idea and ahead of it's time with internet connection. The controller is super freakin' cool looking too. The Pippin could have really been something special, but the price was ridiculous for a game console at that time and the software was incredibly lacking. Such a shame.

    When it comes to failed consoles, if a console fails in Japan the final market they target when the system is about to fail is the Ecchi market.
    And of course, there is loads of Japanese people who love their Ecchi games.
    Mostly they played it on the PC-Engine 32-bit system that was the mid 90s successor to the late 80s PC-Engine 16-bit system.
    I think that was more successful than anything Bandai could have hoped to achieve.
    From the 2000s onwards most of the Ecchi games were on the Personal Computer platform because of the dominance of Windows being the computer of choice.

    Oh that's why the controller is wireless. It's more like a TV remote that didn't realize that until I saw this video. Now bandai teaming up with Apple for that awful Pippin console when you look at it sounds pretty much like a really huge deal, but back then Apple was nowhere close to as big as they are now. I mean Microsoft was so far ahead of them and to be honest they still are ahead of them in the computer market, but still I mean I guess you could say it is kind of a big partnership at the time but not as big as if it were to happen now. Although actually it would never happen now because bandai is part of namco I think

    To be honest, Bandai's Playdia was basically the same idea as the founder of Electronic Arts idea, the same person who created the 3DO that would have games that would feel like a movie more than they did a game and the Playdia also had a link to the Phillps CD-i as like the CD-i it has edutainment and point-and-click software. It was basically the Japanese version of the 3DO or Phillps CD-I but it was cheaply made with Inferred and just tossed onto the Japanese market destined to fail. It's no doubt that kinky people would use the Playdia to do dirty stuff because the 3DO had suffered the same problem, because it was open-source, and anyone could develop and release games for the platform including these types of dirty material. They mostly both died out when PlayStation and Sega Saturn hit the scene, but for Playdia especially, it officially died when the Pippin came onto the audience of the US.

    • @RetroDawn
      @RetroDawn Рік тому

      Trip Hawkins did not create the 3DO. He was the CEO, and it was already at the working prototype stage before he was joined. Almost all of the 3DO games were proper video games and not FMV games. 3DO was vastly different from a marketing strategy, as the tech was licensed to other companies to manufacture. The comparison to CD-i is much more apt, and I would say also the NEC PC-FX, which had PC Engine-style sprite hardware that sadly wasn't taken advantage of in many games in its mostly FMV-heavy library, which also included lewds.

    Playdia: Failed so now have to allow adult games to keep it alive before giving up.
    NEC PC-FX (PC Engine/Turbo Grapx successor): Where have I heard that before?
    Oh yes we did that too when we failed let adult games on the platform.
    I always forget the Playdia came before the Pippin I always remember the Pippin or the Wonderswan or Tamogochi but somewhat forget the Playdia.
    Though the PC-FX has a cool Dinosaur FMV the Playdia doesn't have that but probably some tech demos or other things of its own I guess.
    It is odd they rely on the Otaku/Hentai Otaku market when they fail though.
    Hentai games can be good (depends of course of the few researched with gameplay first or fine enough story and scenes as the epilogues that are handled well with enough respectable characters even besides the bizarre direction of them for theming being yes very unfunny or in many cases very creepy and disgusting I won't deny that being a factor yes) or just plan bad and weird (besides the CD-i having western examples of bad adult games some literal slideshows like Plumbers Don't Wear Ties besides other examples on PC from the 2000s or other consoles like the 2600 or I assume other CD based systems that I just haven't heard of and probably for good reason)
    But I mean why change direction so quickly of audience why did they offer games of both and market it a bit of both/make a redesign for mature audiences.
    Was the PC crowd where adult games can be really necessary here, sigh.
    Or make it more kid friendly than media, kids and adult to get too many audiences at once and confuse people what it's actually for.
    For kids is a fair idea but them wanting too many cakes/pies of sales sources it's a bit silly even though I said other solutions. A kids only platform is a fair idea though at least for the time I'd say.
