After thinking about my question, it has to be Manual, otherwise the camera will keep refocusing when the shutter is pressed. I imagine the AF-C would do the same. I s, enjoying the back focus, especially with the back dial! Thanks.
Great tip about using the rear dial for "back button focus". However, by default it is already assigned to "focus check". Personally, I believe "focus check" is the better option for stills photography.
pal2tech I like your style ✌🏻 Is there any way I can see the effect of my actual aperture constantly, without half pressing the shutter button? You know, like on a fully manual lens... Many thanks
Definitely this is not a requirement. I know how hard is to produce video content. Easy to ask but very hard work to make it happen! On my side I love shooting action sports and be able to edit and posted in social media as soon as possible. So anything that will help this topic is highly appreciated. Cheers
I'm 3 years late, but I want to make an important comment on your video. An important use case for BBF is for moving subjects such as birds in flight. If you simply switch the focus lever from S to M and use the AF On button or the rear command dial (when assigned to AF ON), you only have single (or static) shot focus, not continuous focus. To enable continuous focus while holding the AF ON (or rear command dial) button down, you must first change the INSTANT AF SETTING in AF/MF menu from AF-S to AF-C. This is another change that should be made once only when you set up the camera and then left alone forever. (Thanks for the suggestion to use the rear command dial for BBF. I look through the VF with my left eye and the position of the AF ON button on the X-T4 and X-T5 doesn't work for me, the rear command dial position is better, the far right of the camera back would be best, as it was on the X-T2.)
Your channel is absolutely the best channel for mastering fuji cameras. I have spent a ton of money on books and videos, but your c channel is the quickest and easiest route to a solution. Keep up the excellent work.
Thanks Sharon!!! I'm somewhat guilty of that in some of my later videos (like, um, the Viltrox lens review opening) but overall I try (somewhat at least) to (sort of kinda) get to, um, the point. :-)
@@pal2tech And since you are asking for new ideas. I use the XT-3 and would like to understand more about the exposure compensation dial. What is it actually doing and how does it fit in to shutter speed/ISO/Aperture equation?
Good point of doing both. I tend to like using in M mode because then get the focus peaking benefits too. It is genius that you can be in M but then still autofocus on the fuji!
Is there any way to fix the green square on a person/object and move the camera to compose the photo without the green square following the camera movement?
You do a most competent job! I've always set "Button Focus" to a front button under the notion that I'm pressing towards my face [more solid] than away from my face [less solid]. Button focus is great for Zone Focus in that it holds the acquired focus distance between shutter releases until a new a new focus distance is acquired.
I just found this video. Thank you! I’m one of your subscribers. You are an excellent teacher. I love photography. I used to develop film(Ansel Adams enthusiast). I really like fujifilm xt-2 mirrorless. You’ve taught me allot about the camera features. I appreciate it. I have used this fujifilm camera like my old Nikon F3 manually. Now I am greatly expanding my creativity. Thank you!
I am new to your channel. I just got a new X-t3 and am very happy with your videos. I just wanted to say thank you. I also appreciate your enthusiasm in your videos!
Thanks Richard! Yeah, for me it's been a great help in getting some sports shots where I'll have subjects rapid moving laterally at various distances and want to ensure focus is on, say, the subject in the middle area.
Great tutorial. On my X100V I assign back button focus to the press function of the rear command dial. I have a hinged thumb rest that sits over the dial and with slight pressure from my thumb I can focus quickly without any finger/thumb movement.
Discovering your UA-cam channel has been very pleasant. All your videos clarify so many things that I didn't know and that make photographing with my XT2 easier and more fun. My congratulations and I hope your channel continues to grow more and more with valuable videos like the ones you have published.
I am happy to see that you are using the hybrid back button focus method. Have found this method as well as the best one. Thank you for the great and funny video.
Terrific advice as always. I'm now just changing the AF Lock button to AF ON and leaving the camera in manual focus, so the same as what you did but using the AF Lock button instead of the rear command dial. I never used AF Lock anyway (unlike, say, AE Lock - which I do use because it works quite smoothly when I'm also doing non-auto settings apart from Auto ISO). I quite like how this new set up means no constant refocusing every time I take a picture, which might reduce machine wear.
Love your fast paced, humorous, yet informative style. I use BBF all the time - set AF continuous, AF-ON assigned to a back button and shutter to release with exposure lock at half press. Touch screen should enable added combos.
Thanks so much for the video! I used your video to find out how to do it on the XT-5 I just bought. This camera auto made the AFON button the back button focus once I disabled the AF-S focus like you said so that was very helpful. I guess Fujifilm knows what owners would want to do for focus when they disable the the half-way push shutter requirement.
also great to shoot motorcyle races, keep that shutter half, and press it at the point you want, always to early or to late with all the tension in my body, huge thanks chris!!
It’s awesome. I didn’t find anything similar to what you’ve explained even in official XT-3 manual. Your tip how to use AF in manual mode is WOOW! Thank you)
Terrific! I have set my camera back button focus per your instructions and think I will like this very much. The little button labeled AF-L is in an awkward position for me to get to. Thanks for the great suggestion and how to make it happen.
You nailed the point about having some else take a picture of you with the camera set 100% to BBF. Any time I give my family members my camera to snap a pic of me or us it comes back out of focus 90% of the time. Great great tip, just now need to buy a Fuji. Tk u !!!
Very helpful, thank you! I would love to see a video where you explain all the AF/MF functions. They overwhelm me. Thank you and love from Switzerland.
I have been shooting for over 30 years, but I only started using back-focus a couple of months ago... I never looked back since.... it's definitely the way to go ;)
This is actually genius. Wish I had known this sooner. I'll be shooting in M much more now since I have best of both worlds from this setting change. Thank you so much!!
Thanks for your videos! I'm confused with the functionality of back button focus in video mode. It seems to work the same as with photography before pressing the record button, and I see AF-L works well while recording, too, but for now I just press the touchscreen to change focus points while I'm recording. Of course in manual focus mode, you are adjusting manually, so the buttons don't need to work while recording. Thanks! Hope you're doing well today.
Not sure if this is the same for the xt2 but on the xt3 if you just set AF ON to any function button you need NOT switch to M to use it. When its on single shot u can just use the back button focus! No need to go to M. As soon as i press the rear dial for focusing the shutter half press switches off by itself. Check it out.
Hi Pal, I have a strange situation with my fujifilm X-t3. I have used this camera for couple of years and I loved! Today I was turning it on and it start flickering and after a wile a message says LENS ERROR. I can't operate it. I change lenses and the oly lens that works now is an old lens from Pentax that I used with an adaptor ring. Any clue..!!!
Would be great if you did a video like this for older FujiFilm cameras like the XPro1 or X100S that have the AE-L / AF-L button. Most of the time, I use this button for back button focus in M mode. I am still unclear if this button is also locking exposure when I recompose in M. I’d like it to because generally I want to expose for the same object I want in focus.
Also I would decouple the focus only for AF-C in case I need back button focus for moving subjects. But leave it with the shutter in AF-S for the cases you mentioned. Thank you for all your useful videos!
Many thanks. I already use back button focus, but had set it up just by mapping AF-ON to the AF-L button, I had no idea you could switch shutter AF off separately.
Thanks, this video changes the way I use my xt20. It gives me quick way to move to bbf without being enslaved to it. I am wondering if similar method exists in other cameras, such as canon/nikon dslr's
Hiya, Great video thanks, one question; When using the Back Button Focus when the lever is set in M manual focus mode, will the focussing be Continuous or Single? Also will this set up differ on the XT1? Apologies if you've covered this in the comments, I've looked through but there are hundreds! Many thanks, Leo
Hey man, I have a small niggle I'm hoping you can help me with. On my 100F when using bbf the little cursor stays green indicating its locked, I like that! On my xt3, also using bbf it locks but little cursor fella doesn't stay green, I don't like that! I've had a good fiddle several times but do you think i can suss it? No I bloody can't :) Thought maybe you have the answer? Thanks in advance, and great work on this channel, really cool to have a wealth of Fujifilm goodness to hand. Stay safe, Rich
I think the focus options on the XT2 are great but so very complicated. If not using them frequently, it's easy to forget what settings and buttons to choose. Your idea of manual focus with back button focus is really helpful. The tidgy little AF-L button on the camera back is badly designed and awkwardly situated. Hard to get it quickly. Using the command dial makes it easy. Thanks so much. Liked and Subbed.
Great suggestion !! I'll start using BBF to learn the muscle memory. Question: I've assigned the back dial as my BBF, however I still kept my front selector switch on C continuous focus mode. If I'm pushing my back dial, will the shutter focus prevail as the shutter is depressed?? Or I have the M manual mode always on for the rear dial to be effective?
Just got my XT3 so in the learning phase. Love your content! Easy to understand with added humor to boot. Just subbed. Now on to read the manual....thanks 😊
I have set the ft button for BBF or alternative button for focus. I do use the scroll button for magnification in M mode when I am on a tripod. I find that when in C it is easier to hold the Ft button for tracking and pressing the Shutter button. Each to their own.
Yes, there are definitely advantages to that. That's what's so great about the X-T3, it cam be set up in so many ways --- totally up to personal preference.
I use a similar setup to you except I use my front button for focus. That way the dial is still used for focus check when shooting in manual focus mode, which is my default mode.
Thank you for your informative video. Very helpful. Did I understand correct that while using BBF, after focusing you can let go of the button ( no pressure any longer unto that button) for single focus and if you'll need continuous focus, you should keep it pressed?
I never felt the need to do back focussing on my XT1 & XT2 for some reason. Nor do I have it for my 5Dmk3, which has dedicated back focussing button, I never use it. However, back on the day, on my 5Dmk2, which had not so sophisticated controls, had bad AF and only 9 focussing points, that was a life saviour...
Bit late to the party , but found this really useful. When you hold the back button ( I use the wheel as you do - easier to find) , is it continually focusing?
First of all, thank you so much for this content is really helpful!! Now I’m going crazy with my new XT3. I just can’t set the AF and AE lock in the same button, I just can’t find the way HELP PLEASE!!! 🙏🏼
Hi Chris - thanks for all of your amazing work. I use back button focus in manual focus mode a lot, which works great. However, I would love to have more control over the auto-focus type when using this; in particular, I'd love to be able to press my back button focus and have my X-T4 track a face. Is this possible, am I missing something here? Thanks again
Is there any chance to use half-press shutter for AF-C and back button focus as AF-S so i don't have to switch AF modes ? It is handy for sport photography.
Idea. Anyway to explain the differences between single mode and manual mode on the camera and auto focus settings on the camera? Does that make sense? When making settings, do they differ when in manual, single or continuous mode?
Hi Muhammad! What a great idea!!! I'll definitely need to do a video on that. I've only focused on Karate thus far for sport, but agree that a more general sports video would be a great topic to cover. Thank you so much for the suggestion!!! All the best to you sir!!! -- Chris
I've been a back button focuser for years and was spolied by my first camera being the 7Dii. But I don't know why I did not consider making the back dials on Fujis to be AF-ON. They're perfectly located and I don't need to make a micro struggle owing to the fact that the X-T2 and X-H1 don't have the best buttons in the business. Having said that I will switch my Digital Zoom to the left button and see how that works. Thanks a ton!
@@pal2tech most certainly will at my next event shoot. I must say though that initially it does appear that I need more force on the dial than I would on the button which I guess is to be expected. But still early days. Thank you for taking the time to respond btw :)
Silly question. When using back button focus, do I need to keep my finger pressed on the back button, or just press it once. And then press again if I want the camera to refocus?
Since the big shot wiz boys like to get into red, blue, green light and how they misbehave and how the sensor is different than others, I've been wondering about shooting with colored filters while having the camera set up for black and white.
Sorry I am new to BBF...if I use the rear command button for back button focusing, and in manual mode, will I no longer be able to use the command dial for peak focusing?
OH MY GOSH this video is amazing!!!! Thank you SO MUCH!!!! It works great! This seems to be better or faster than regular focusing, but I'm not sure why?
I’m a new subscriber to your channel and I’m in the process of switching from Nikon to Fuji. I don’t shoot video only stills and I will use the camera mainly for travel, family and street photography. I’m undecided between the XT2 or the Xt3. In your opinion, are the extra features of the XT3 worth the added cost. I will get the 18-55 with the camera and at a later time perhaps the 35 and 55-200. Your thoughts? Thanks and keep the videos coming - they are extremely helpful.
Hi Leslie, I really do think the X-T3 is the best choice if you can swing it. Better autofocus and video for sure. Plus I think better face/eye tracking. What type of photography do you do?
@@pal2tech I haven't done any video - not sure I will. Photography-wise, I love street photography and street portraits, a lot of family events and travel (including landscape). Thanks for responding.
It may sound dumb, but when you hold the dial button in to back focus, do you release it before you press the shutter, or keep pressing it while you press the shutter?
Have you any recommendations to set back button autofocus (BBAF) on an x-pro2? I can see the benefits of your last set up where you can easily switch between shutter autofocus SAF and BBAF auto focus and think that BBAF would help to focus on birds in flight and then to SAF for static subjects but I am unsure how to do this on the x-pro2.
Always on the lookout for new video/camera/photography ideas. Don't hesitate to let me know if there any you want to see a video about here!

Bit late to the party , but found this really useful. When you hold the back button ( I use the wheel as you do - easier to find) , is it continually focusing?
Talk about focus stacking , great video!
GREAT idea!! Love it!! Will do, thank you!
I'd love to know how to enable back button focus in video mode. Cheers
Thanks man! I ilike how you get right to it.....Great info served up nice and simple
So well explained, thank you.
Thank you so much Christian!!!! 🙏
Is there any chance to use half-press shutter for AF-C and back button focus as AF-S so i don't have to switch AF modes ? It is handy for sport photography.
Great Video, I am new to the Fuji system. I was a Canon user and really loved my back button focus setting. Thank you !
Awesome Alfred!!! Welcome to the Fujifilm family!! We're a fun bunch!!!!
Great video! But what are the difference between AF-ON and AF-L? Seems to me they are doing the same thing in manual mode.
Idea. Anyway to explain the differences between single mode and manual mode on the camera and auto focus settings on the camera? Does that make sense? When making settings, do they differ when in manual, single or continuous mode?
Would love to hear how you use the XT3 for sports both indoors and outdoors
Hi Muhammad! What a great idea!!! I'll definitely need to do a video on that. I've only focused on Karate thus far for sport, but agree that a more general sports video would be a great topic to cover. Thank you so much for the suggestion!!! All the best to you sir!!! -- Chris
great tip, It was very hard to use the AFL button for this. Your option #2 is great. Will it work the same shooting vertical with the grip on
Andy Glavac Thanks. Yes, I believe that it does.
Awesome Joaquin! Yep, definitely worth it. Try it out and let me know how it goes!!
@@pal2tech most certainly will at my next event shoot. I must say though that initially it does appear that I need more force on the dial than I would on the button which I guess is to be expected. But still early days. Thank you for taking the time to respond btw :)
@@JoaquimGonsalves Absolutely!! Keep at it, you'll get better and better with it!!!!!!
Silly question. When using back button focus, do I need to keep my finger pressed on the back button, or just press it once. And then press again if I want the camera to refocus?
Great hybrid tip, tried and love it! Thanks for your videos
Hey JoeBoy, thank you! Appreciate the feedback! Please keep in touch!
Can you do a comparison with the T2 and T3
Very useful as always,thank you.
Absolutely!!!! No problem and thank you so much for stopping by this electronic campfire!!! All the best to you!!!!
I wanted to look for the shortest video explaining bbf, but accidently selected the longest. But the second method rocks for me :)
Glad it helped!
thank you. Do you also have a video About ael
Thank you so much Helen!! 🙏 Yeah, just changing some of the ergonomics around can really make a difference!
Really enjoy your videos, entertaining and informative.
Thank you Frank! I really appreciate the feedback!!!! Hopefully I can keep up the energy - working on new ideas now.
