Mistakes you can make after you hear a TURKEY Gobble

- You hear that distant Gobble of the first time, NOW WHAT?
The next move you make can dictate whether you
are successful at taking that Spring Gobbler or not.
The first impression is to head towards that Gobbler,
but is that the best thing to do?
By stopping and slowing down for a bit
you might avoid these mistakes.

My list of what not to do gets longer every season
Lol same here man and I'm 25 and have been turkey hunting for the last 11 seasons.
lollll
Ain't that the truth brother!
Lol, just when you think you're doing everything right a smart Tom will make a fool of you.
It took 20 years for me to figure that out
@@chrisj8078 ok
Very Impressed with this guy. First impression was wrong. Definitely trying to help hunters be successful.
I watched this video after a night hunt gone wrong, I went back in the morning and closed the deal on a tom! Thanks for the informative information!
I really get more information about actually hunting from you than most of the other UA-cam turkey Hunters
That’s what my channel is about
Teaching others!
Thanks for watching
same here...you are so chock full of love for your sport.
Yup
Matt is good 👍
A great hunter once told me that patience kills more turkeys than anything. And I’ve tested that and found it to be true.
Persistence also.
Yes indeed!
I believe it.
The first time you Yelp and he doesn't reply. It means he's on the way. So sit tight. The gobbler knows the exact location your call is coming from. It can take up to an hour sometimes, but it works.
Weird, I’d figure it would be shotguns that kill more turkeys than anything.
I haven’t killed them with anything else
THIS GUY JUST SAVED ME 3 YEARS OF STRUGGLE WITH THIS SINGLE VIDEO!!!
I was asked to describe turkey hunting in as few words as possible. My answer: turkey hunting is the most fun you will ever have getting mad as hell in your life. Lol!
No, that would be golf...Lol!
IKR
The most rewarding sickness that you could ever be lucky enough to experience!!!!
GREGG G this is extremely accurate
LOL… You got that right!
Not only Turkey hunting advice, but advice for life in general! Great job Dale, God bless you!
I just started hunting turkeys seriously about 3 years ago and I’ve learned so much about it from watching your videos! You are one of the best, my friend!
Turkey hunting is fun 😀
There are many mistakes to be made, and you shed light on the one we all struggle with. But, busted birds are great memories too. Getting close enough to close the deal is electrifying. Good word, thanks.
Man I started turkey hunting by myself 2 years ago and your absolutely right...... I couldn't tell you how Manu times I've over called turkey's...... what I do is get a few responses and then I'll be silent for fifteen or 20 mins , they can't resist the silent treatment haha
i been hunting turkeys for 40 years and dale teaches me a lot. best turkey hunting advice on youtube.
Best turkey hunting channel on UA-cam. I’ve learned more from this guy then everyone else together. Thank You so much.
He telling u facts 😁👍👍👍he is the man
I’ve made
That mistake of calling going to
One. I still make that mistake
Makes sense to not call.
I learned something, thanks 👍
I have called in 82 turkeys in 27 years and I am still in turkey hunting kindergarten, but I absolutely hooked. Thanks for the great information!

Be my first time turkey hunting this year. Been a deer hunter all my life so I’m no stranger to the woods but u give good advice and I enjoy learning tips from u. Keep it coming man!
Good luck
I'm excited to go out on my first Spring turkey hunt this Friday. Thanks for the tips Dale.
Have you killed any gobblers yet??
Lessons learned and living through other people's knowledge/ mistakes seems wise. Good info like always Dale!
I sure learned a lot in this video
Thanks Matt, can’t wait
For my box call!!
Turkeys little brain will. …Tech you more than you think. Lol experience is getting frustrating ,30 years later I still ❤ it !
Thank you for being honest enough to admit your theories are “uneducated guesses.”( that is the definition of “ opinion.”
Your videos help me a lot. I hadn’t killed a tom in years but I ended up getting my second big Tom of the year Sunday morning. Thanks for the calling advise I always try soft calling first now; and both times it worked when the bird was within that gobble echo range
I appreciate your videos they really help me in the hardwoods ! I live in missouri an the turkey hunting isn't bad I've learned to have more pateince turkey hunting an sometimes it pays off an other times well I blowed it an thats turkey hunting thanks an keep these videos coming!
This is my third season listening to this talk. It's kind of like my little pep talk. I laugh every time I watch it as I have made every single one of these mistakes and had the exact outcome he mentions. Thank you sir for helping me be more intentional and stopping to pause and think when that turkey gobbles. A little bit of patience and planning in the turkey woods goes a long way.

Me too lol always a couple weeks before spring opening
Guarantee plenty of Turkey Veterans besides me are watching your videos! One thing, I have seen more+ more of on the Public Lands is the " Sprinting Spring Turkey Hunter" I don't know if these are Younger guys or what. Few years back, I hit a Crow call and got a Gobble response in the next Field. 100 yards away and out of the woods comes a Sprinting Spring Hunter moving towards the Rockwall separating both fields. He was moving!! I know he saw me. That's Public Land though. No shot was heard thank goodness.
I like to use ground blind with decoy's around me, call some while they are in roost, then if you stay still and quiet after they leave roost sometimes they come in to investigate.
This was great video, I just went on my first turkey hunt last weekend, went with very experienced hunters and I learned a lot and it was the most fun I've ever had. I'm addicted now, but love these videos of what not to do because I'm new at this so I wanna absorb as much knowledge as I can, thank you
Perfect -- I enjoyed watching it. --- When people ask me about Turkey hunting --- I tell them to picture the woods, hills, valleys, ridges, nooks, and crannies as a giant chess board. You play chess with the Tom. Making him make the last move in a direction and location picked by you.--- My style of Run and Gun Turkey Hunting. Upstate NY. Web
A lot of good advice from an experienced turkey hunter
This was a really great video...I consider myself an avid turkey hunter and everything in this video are things I've had to learn through screwups chasing America's greatest game bird! Even learned something new!
Great video. I'm learning something new every season. Can't get enough information!
I got my first Spring turkey the other day! I'm hooked!
I didn’t start killing turkeys till I gave up hunting out of a blind started with the run and gun style. Definitely improve things for me and it’s a forever and ongoing learning experience. Lots of fun sometimes I win but usually they win but as long as you have the experience you gain in the outdoors it’s experience like nothing else, lots of fun.
Another Great video , I enjoy watching your videos . Learn a lot , can’t wait to turkey season with my kids this spring . It’s good turkey hunting here in the north east . Always try to learn from my mistakes o make over the many years of hunting.
Just what I needed to hear. Thank you.
I've killed 75 longbeards in 30 years of hunting them.and I'm not afraid to say I'm still learning how to to kill a gobbler every season.i enjoy your videos plus your style of hunting.keep the videos coming dale.god bless!
I used to hunt upstate NY and Ohio.i no longer hunt those States because the hunting pressure increased which negatively affected the Gobbler's behavior.also my home state now allows Hunter's to take 2 Gobbler's with the appropriate licenses!
Sounds like BS to me
Don't really care doc Holliday how u feel or what you think.
@@DrDeath-pk2tt why? 2 birds per state. Hunt 2 to 3 states a year. Very easily done
Thank you jacob.thats how I accomplished it by hunting my ass off.also it's not about the kill I love the adrenaline rush and the sound of the bird gobbling and the fact that I am hunting him on his turf and basically trying to reverse nature.its the ultimate challenge as far as I'm concerned.
Love the different scenarios you going to and the detail. Great video can’t wait for more
Great info it’s not easy sometimes to take an old gobbler he knows every stick and twig on a ridge or flat wherever he’s at that’s for sure.
Good videos and videos
I’m new to turkey hunting had success last season and good encounters so far this year
Loads of fun
I like it cause you can move to a few spots in a day really unlike deer hunting
Thank you for the great information. I always like watching your videos!
Its hard to stay until quitting time in FL.. 98 degrees is a game changer
This year will be my 31st year in the turkey woods and I cannot wait. Matt great video keep them coming!!!
Me to 31 yrs👍
My 6 yr old daughter: why do i need to learn how to play chess
Me: so you can hunt turkeys on your own one day 🦃👧 lol
Josh Luyster she isn’t a joe Diffy fan is she? That was a great video brother

Set up is KEY
Great advice. It's a lot of fun to play the cat and mouse game with a gobbler.
Awesome motivational speech at the end btw, I’m so quick to get discouraged and my own worst critic. Thanks for the great content sir!

Great info!
I was out 2 days ago (Southern VT) at 6:30am walking the dog in the woods and heard the first gobbles of the year. Super exciting.
No way! That’s sweet. I haven’t heard anything yet (northeast kingdom). I did have one gobbling in July though. Best of luck to you.
I enjoy your videos. Thanks for making them.
God bless a good crow call!
Late to the party with this comment, but do you still use a crow call for heavily hunted birds? I’ve seen guys spook birds badly with a crow call where I hunt, lots of hunters in the area. Been super hesitant to use a locator for that reason. Love to hear your thoughts.
All of this sounds like common sense, yet I’ve made every mistake... more than once. Thanks for the video.
Literally speaks as emotionally as a preacher. Great video!
I believe I read on his Facebook page he was a preacher lol
Good video. I agree with everything you said
all excellent advice!
I'm relatively new to turkey hunting. I've had two experts call me in two nice Easterns and I finally tried solo. I watched this video and killed a 21.8 lb. Eastern with a 12 inch beard and 1 1/2 inch spurs taking your advice.
THANKS FOR WATCHING COMMENTING AND SHOWING LOVE YOU'VE BEEN SELECTED AMONG OUR SHORTLISTED WINNERS TEXT ABOVE NUMBER ON CLAIMING YOUR PRIZE✔️💌
I always get one to gobble and take a nap.I enjoy being in the woods not just killing turkey.
Thank you for the tips!
Thankyou for all the good advice! I've been turkey hunting only for 1 yr and still learning so much!!... when is the best time to call a turkey in? And when should u head out of the woods?
Thanks so much
Great info, Matt! Thank you!
Great as usual, hunted this morning had 2 at 50 yards could not get them in sight, they moved all the way from my left to right, soft called and they wouldn't come up the ridge.
Next time.
Thanks for the video
U need to “light pur” putt, kit, and Kat softly and gently on a slate call when they in range but not visible
thanks! Done all of these things wrong... Turkey hunting is way more difficult and involved (and more rewarding) than deer hunting
First time turkey hunting 2 weeks ago. Got within 70 yards of a gobbler and he went completely quiet. Figured I'd got spotted and sad down against a tree to assess. Less than a minute later momma bear and 2 cubs come strolling on by within 10 yards. Never saw or winded me. Figured I'd call that a successful first hunt and try another day.

I'll never forget that time two old geezers (who claimed to be seasoned turkey hunters) arrived half an hour after sun up and started responding to EVERY gobble, even going as far as to STAND UP in a field to call back, they couldn't sit still for two seconds. The worst part is we called the Tom to the edge of the bush, no more than 40 yards infront of us. These jokers ruined our closing day for what would've been a guaranteed turkey for us. It didn't help they were insufferable and accused us of hunting past legal hours, meanwhile they were party hunting (illegal).
When you said the setup is the most important thing you do, I knew you were a turkey hunter. I tell new hunter, where you sit down is the biggest key to killing turkey's. I try to alway get where he has to be inside killing range before he can see me, or I can see him. Can't always get it perfect, but I have seen this prove itself for 40 years.

Good video bud good points
I tried a method I read about on a hung up bird. There were several birds (ended up being Jake's) hung up about 100 yards. We couldn't see them so I slowly moved closer and called. Then moved closer again and called. When I got as close as comfortable, I turned back and worked back to where I started and called. Before I knew it, all the jakes were at a full run coming at me. Have you ever tired this method with any success ?
Great video!!!
I love this video
GREAT VIDEO BROTHER!!!!
Matt another helpful video I thought maybe when you said know your Terrain you would have mentioned make sure your on the right side of a fence row I remember you talking about that in one of your other videos thank you sir.
Running water also can act as background noise to be used to your advantage but at the same time don’t abuse it, wild turkeys hearing is excellent and vision is 3x better than a humans during the day
Just killed my first one with a bow at 17 yds immediately after day break ….I’m hooked

Dale thank you. I killed 3 in Virginia this season. All you. Patience and silence. Killed two at 8:00 and one at 11:00. Previously I would have moved on running and running.
Thanks.
Still looking for a box call. Is there an email list we can get on when they are back in stock? Love your videos.
Great video. Patience killed my evening 🦃 this year. New subscriber right here. 👍🏻👍🏻
Good as it gets: the John Madden of turkey hunting!!! 🤣

New 2022 videos starting February 1st. Stay tuned for a new season of great instruction videos
Why does Michigan only let you kill one turkey the whole year how fucking dumb is that go out hunting once and if you kill a Tom but he ain’t that big that’s gonna suck although I’m sure no one gives a fuck about the law Like most other things. Im new to turkey hunting and all the laws for a simple turkey is insane to me there’s millions in Michigan no worry about then going extinct
I'm liking this guy

I am sitting in a blind turkey hunting ATM and I called a doe to me 😂 she walks right up to the decoy... Heard a gobbler off too my left in the woods but I can't seem to move him in ever... He has been there day after day always gobbling to me but never breaking.
dale you need to pull the bag worms off your cedar before may or they will kill your tree. great video lots useful information look forward to more.
Good video, but you could’ve touched on two people hunting and having one Hunter walk straight away in line where the turkey is and the hunter is located and start calling. Gobblers can’t handle it, it’s deadly!

I call it run and gun first thing in the morning one on the roost and try to beat him before he pitches off. Its worked so well it seems too easy. Carrying one out with the sun just peaking over the horizon...and the other 50-75 percent of the time you run up on him in the tree, or never hear anything after one or two gobbles.
If hens go to the gobblers like you said, why do gobblers often come to our calls? I've only killed one so maybe it's just my personal experience. Last year I was walking around and hit a call once and I heard alot of gobbles in a field at the bottom of the hill I was on. I set up on top of the hill and hit it again and I could see them through the trees running towards me.
nice vid.. I do the opposite when I locate a gobbler that won't come, I call to him and walk away.. the run back and wait for him to swing by.. also I have had a lot of success gobbling at birds in the afternoon who are out looking for gals.. never forget the last turkey hunt I had with Mr. Bill Harmon.. we had a bird 90 yards away in sight but another bird in the field across the creek... When I gobbled at him I thought Mr. Bill was gonna come unglued, but to his own admission it was a brilliant move because that dude came screaming in as he finally noticed the full strut decoy> I did not want to lose him to the other bird, Bill shot him at 12 yards, wad hit it in the face
What's better all around for a locater a owl or crow locater?
Dale I have been trying to find some light jackets like the one you are wearing in this video. Where did you buy it who is it made by?
Mossy oak online store
They always have
Them in stock usually
It’s in bottomland camo
Another very helpfull video, where can I get that box call.
Thanks
springfevercustomcalls.com
At the moment they are sold out but check back there at the site in a week or so . Thanks for watching
matt, talking about not wanting to call as your walking towards a gobbler, have you ever done a situation in which you tried tricking a boss tom or a gobbler into thinking your another gobbler trying to steal his hens?
like this kind of scenario - you locate a gobbler and he gobbles back. so you yelp a few more times then use a gobbler call right after that. so your doing hen yelps and maybe clucks and cuts and then also doing a gobble call afetr that, and make it sound like 2 turkey are talking to eachother
would that maybe trick a gobbler into thinking another male has entered his territory and is trying to steal his hens? then he'd come to investigate?
this would probably only work though if its the boss tom of the area? if it would work?
Hey Dale Kevin here.hope all is well with you and your family.im on a gobbler now that only gobbles 2 or 3 times on the roost after that I get no gobbling from him after that.this has happened the last 2days this past week.i didn't hear him fly down and I didn't hear any hen's with him either.can u offer any assistance to me on how to approach this gobbler?
Seems I have to relearn this lesson from time to time. I started turkey hunting in 1989.
