Personally my favorite part about these comparisons is watching the little, insignificant differences between the runs, like at 1:58 , the 4-2 warpzone is incredibly straightforward and simple to do, yet essentially all of the runners do it differently, for no reason other than personal preference, I love it
Some of the differences come down to framerules. If you are 6 frames short of saving a framerule, you can play it very safely. If you have no frames to spare at all (e.g. Niftski's 8-1) you have to go for the riskiest strategies.
@@jatloe guys he said it's what he believes! Don't question the man's faith. Some believe the earth is flat. Others that one mario trick is actually another. Can't we all just get along and stop with the religious persecution?!
Honestly though, the coolest part of the video is knowing that AndrewG entered the first pipe first. 3:25 is also A+ with AndrewG just walking in the castle wondering what the other 4 are doing!
My favorite parts are differences that are actually completely trivial and don't save time, but show runners' senses of humor, even through the grind for a good time. For instance, at 1:14, for literally no (apparent) reason, Kosmic and AndrewG both decide to hit the 1-Up block in 4-1 just for fun. It really goes to show that these runs are playthroughs done by real people, each of which has a different approach to the game, even if their ultimate strategy is the same.
It's crazy how much of a difference a few seconds can make, you feel bad for Andrew G by the end cause he isn't even reaching the warpzones before Niftski has moved on
There are 10 frame rules at play. I'll mention them here, for those interested: 8-1 Star sub-pixel was missed by AndrewG here; "Saradoc" got it. 8-2 BBG- is two frame rules saved; "Saradoc" got this to take a 3 frame rule lead over AndrewG. 1-1 FPG added by Darbian. 4-1 FPG added by Darbian, to take a 2 frame rule lead over "Saradoc." 1-2 Wall Clip added by Kosmic. 4-2 Wall Clip added by Kosmic. 8-3 FPG added by Kosmic, to take a 3 frame rule lead over Darbian. 8-1 FPG added by Niftski. 8-2 BBG+ added by Niftski, to take a 2 frame rule lead over Kosmic. So Niftski was 10 frame rules ahead of AndrewG entering 8-4, and 27 frames better on 8-4. I noted BBG- as the basic BBG that saves 2 frame rules. I noted BBG+ as the new BBG that saves 1 more frame rule. The nice thing about comparing these five particular records is that there is no regression or substitution in strategies, as for instance when Darbian got a WR with 8-3 FPG, and Kosmic's subsequent WR did not use 8-3 FPG. With these 5 performances, every trick added by the slower player is also performed by the faster players. So it's all very neat for tracking community progression. Also worth mentioning, the previous second barrier was 4:59.340, set by AndrewG one year earlier; which was also the "Minute Barrier." The 459 performance was only 1 frame rule slower, with less optimal bumps on 4-2 (See Summoning Salt's video on 4-2); ironically, it also missed the Star sub-pixel frame rule on 8-1. Finally, the 459 was 7 frames slower on 8-4. With this, we can do a little tracking to compare 8-4's in this video. AndrewG was 7 frames better than his previous "second barrier" WR. Saradoc was 9 frames better than AndrewG's 458 in this video. Darbian was 7 frames better than Saradoc. Kosmic was 2 frames better than Saradoc, playing more conservatively than Darbian to ensure the 455. Niftski was 18 frames better than Saradoc, exactly matching Kosmic's best 8-4 performance in the 4:55.646 WR. MiniLand successfully incorporated the extra fast accel. at the beginning of 8-4 to set the record for best 8-4 in a WR run, 4 frames better than Kosmic & Niftski's best 8-4 in a WR run.

I have got to say that as a observer of the speed running community over the last few years (I don’t have the gaming skills to actually be part of it), you guys seem like one of the nicest group of people I’ve come across on the internet. Normally video game communities are some of the most toxic group to come across online. These also this idea that you have to stay loyal to XBOX or Sony through the generations. And some times voice actors get death threats from fans for things there character in a game did. So it really is nice to see how you guys are nothing but supportive of each other’s runs. You guys never seem bitter about losing a record to someone else. It’s more about getting the time down as much as you can and working together to do that. I wish I had the skills and patience to become a speed runner. You seem like such nice people.
Hey bud! Drop any talk about 'skills' from your wish because the only way to get skills is with practice! You absolutely could be a speedrunner with only patience.
