I'm pretty sure any screen protector with with tooth to it is going to wear away at the pencil. The smoother the surface, the less tooth, and less friction to wear away at the pencil nib.

Try using letter sized clear acetate or view foils ( for those old enough to remember), it works really well and is dirt cheap. I just tape it on near the top and the clear material gives you just enough tooth for a realistic drawing feedback. The material is perfectly clear and does not leave a residue on your ipad screen. You can easily replace the vinyl or acetate since it is not stuck on. I have experimented with several materials with different feedback feel … just dig in your old art drawer and see what you can find ……….

Your observations are exactly like my experience with paperlike. Like you, I have both models used on two iPads with two pencils. The experience is completely different from the original model. Even the sound it made on the original paperlike was satisfying and the friction was more like ‘real paper’. I hope they can get this figured out on the next gen. Thanks!

I really loved my original Paperlike that I had years ago. It lasted for AGES. But when I got the iPad Pro 2020 and got the new Paperlike, it was scratched up the first day I used it! I also could never get all the air bubbles out. But when I got off-brand matte screen protectors, the bubbles came out fine and after several months (around a year, actually) no scratches. It’s starting to get a few spots around the edges that aren’t adhering to the iPad screen as much anymore, but I barely notice it unless I’m looking. It was a 2-pack like Paperlike, but half the price, so I still have one left.

I recently bought the new M1 iPad Pro 12.9 inches and also Paperlike 2. I can't say anything about wear on the tip or anything like that because I've only had it for 3 weeks. However, I immediately noticed that the paperlike creates an extreme rainbow effect. I think that Paperlike 2 is not really mature in combination with the new display, so I would definitely advise against this combination as it makes the new display almost completely redundant.

Appreciate the review. I do like paperlike1. I’d rather replace nibs more often in exchange for the toothier structure. I also keep a little spray bottle with me to make sure the surface is free of oil from my palm as the surface gets slippery easily when the oils accumulate.

Good honest review. To be honest, I’ve used Paperlike2 on my iPad for months and I’ve loved it. I feel a good amount of friction vs the bare glass.
I found this video though because I’ve been looking at screen protectors for the new iPad Pro M1 with XDR, and I wanted to see what options are available today.
I love the Paperlike for drawing which I primarily use my iPad for, but with the XDR screen, I feel sad about putting any matte screen protector on it because it will decrease the quality of the XDR display which feels like a shame.
    So I’m a bit torn.
My Paperlike2 protector is functionally great, I’m satisfied with it, but it DOES dull the colors. The scratches it picks up is reminiscent to how my Wacom devices have picked up scratches, so I expected it to be honest.
I’m considering practicing with the Apple Pencil on the bare glass, but I always hate fighting an art tool to function the way I want. An art tool should be as natural as possible so I can focus on the creative side of art, not fighting the mechanical side of creating art.
But maybe I can adjust. We’ll see.

This is probably going to sound rude, however that is not my intention but:
How could something provide friction and texture but not wear down the pencil’s tip?
I personally dont have actual brand name Paperlike, given how expensive it is, but I use Nillkin (I dont want to promote anything, but I feel people are going to ask, idk) which isnt the cheapest option either. It seems to wear down the pencil’s tip as much as Paperlike 1 does, which I believe to be expected from a product that is essentially “fancy high grit sandpaper screen protector for the iPad”.
Again, how would there be sensible friction without wear either from the tip or from the protector? It is, to me, simple physics of the interaction between 2 materials’ hardness, no? That’s why diamonds are classified as “hard” and “the hardest material on Earth”, because if you were to rub it against something, the “something” wears out before the diamond.

If you use an Apple Pencil on an iPad you should not get any scratches on the screen. The Apple Pencil and iPad are deigned that way. You only get scratches by using other materials on the iPad screen. I have been using iPads since the beginning and I never had any scratch on my screen. I never use screen protection.

What about the protection angle. Is a screen protector a necessity from that perspective. I called Apple and they said yes yes you need it, get one from the official site. But the site didn’t have any and I suspect they probably meant a case of some kind :)

I’m sorry that you had such a bad experience with your Paperlike. I, on the other hand LOVE my Paperlike 2. I’ve been using it on my iPad Pro 2020 12.9” since May 2020. I love the matte finish it gives off and the feel of paper simulation. I am a graphic designer who uses LumaFusion, Affinity Photo & Designer, Adobe Lightroom, Canva, Squarespace, Procreate & Notes. My  Pen 2, tip never wore down, I replaced my worn down Paperlike 2 with a fresh sheet last month, I also ordered more for my wife’s brand new iPad Pro 2021 12.9” (I’m jealous). I don’t work for nor, have any stock in Paperlike. I heard about them through Ergo Josh a few years ago when I started using Procreate. I listened to him rave on about it for a year before I purchased it. Now, I don’t & can’t use my iPad Pro without Paperlike. Thank you for your review.

I think it's the other way around, the apple pen nibs should make an improvement. Apple pen should make more sturdy pen nib. Or the Paper Like should make/sell the more sturdy Apple pen nib replacement too as a companion for the Paper Like it self. So it's a bundle, the Paper Like + Apple pen nib. Get the idea?

    • @JigokuHebi
      @JigokuHebi 2 роки тому

@Telephassa Rose it would not, as the pressure is inside, that golden thingy u have there. The nib is kind of like a protector for that part and well part to draw write with as that golden thingy would be a pain to use xD

Ive been using the icarez matte screen protector... It was my 1st time using a matte screen protector... I habe been using it for over a month now and not even one scratch on it.. The colour noise is visible when holding the ipad close.. But at normal distance its not... I really love the look of the matte screen protector... But i just wish it ddnt dull the colours of the screen.. Its not a big difference and you get used to it after a few days.. But when u put it next to other screen you notice the washed colours...

i'm quite concerned about its wear on the pencil. the paranoid person in me thinks it's just a scheme between paperlike and apple to generate loads from replacing pencil tips and the "screen protectors" that wear them down. likely not the case, but still, why should i bother? above that, when i took it off after it wouldn't adhere properly, it left a surface level scratch on my brand new m2 pro 11inch. tried to put the second one on and it was on the adhesive backwards (label said paperlike side but the stickers were reversed so it didn't come off the plastic and then a messy situation ensued). all in all, i guess i will just get my money back since it seems like either a major waste, a scheme, or both. not to mention, it's a huge drawback for artists if it at all affects hue and color. like why even bother using a high end pro apple product then?

The main problem with trying to make it feel like pencil on paper is that pencils function by being destroyed by the paper which means the paper like will do the same

I don't like screen protectors, because most of them don't give me the smooth feeling of touching a glas screen. That's why I mostly remove them when they are pre-installed on a new smartphone.
But for the iPad I would like to try a paperlike feeling when writing or sketching with my Apple pencil. But the danger of scratches on screen, unproper attachment of the screen protector, the consuming or destroying of the pencil tip (I am using Pencil 2nd gen. since the start in 2018 and it has still its first tip) prevents me from putting on a protector.
Since I also use the iPad for consuming media I would like to maintain the color origin of the display and not watch movies on a matte protector.
So, what I am looking for is a paperlike-like REMOVABLE screen protector that can be used when needed and removed when not.
I found some in the web, for instance the magnetic screen protector from ESR. Does anybody have any experience with it? My concerns are scratches and the Pencil tips.
    Thanks!

Peoples are making this bigger problem than it really is. And paperlike is not screen protector its just for feel. I had paperlike on my ipad for a long time now and yes it has scratches but they are not in a way if you are not trying to find them. Its still way better to draw than without it. Some day i will change it to new but im not in hurry and my pen tips doesnt have noticeable wear. I bought new tips right away when i bought paperlike because evyrybody said your tips wear fast, but im still using the original tips without any problems.

Draw on regular paper (it is just like real paper) using ordinary pens and pencils. Then use the iPad camera to scan it in the iPad. it works and the scans can be used in whatever app you want. But I don't mind the feel of the Apple Pencil on the iPad screen directly.

I love my original paperlike. I use my ipad every day for my job (tattoo artist) most every tattoo artist I know has it and loves it. The tiny green/red light distortions are barely noticeable an only when the ipad is at certain angles. Also the tooth of it barely wears down my nibs but I also don’t press down very hard. Drawing straight on glass gives me the willys and the slight texture helps with smooth lines. If this paperlike 2 is less grip I would probably like it less. Maybe they should sell it in different grits. Anyway great product!

I also was very disappointed with Paperlike 2 - it scratches faster and even the quality of the product has gotten worse - I had to get a replacement because mine came in damaged and the other one was cut uneven. It’s a real pity because as much as I loved Paperlike 1 personally, the light scattering was giving me a big headache after a while. At least their customer service is responsive and they are quick to send a refund but I will be on a lookout for a better screen protector since the asking price is not very great.
