- Oct 27, 2020: Most professional artists agree that the single best thing one can do to improve one’s art is to establish a regular sketching practice. Why, then, is it so hard to do so? Why do we resist? How do we overcome our own stubbornness? In this REASONABLY FINE ART TALK, hear Charlie expound and offer his ill-considered opinions on the topic!
Thank you for this Charlie. You’ve inspired me to try to do little tonal gouache sketches every morning with my coffee. So far I’m loving it!
I am watching this in April 28 2022 so I missed your day but it is still good to watch at this time. I like constantly being reminded about the shapes because I keep forgetting that.
So great to have this reminder. Right on time!
Thank you, Charlie. This is very inspiring.
I laughed when you told the story of your students wanting to paint just like you and resisting, sketching. I teach, as well and find the exact response from my students. I cannot get them to even do their thumbnail before they start to paint. If I see them out and about in a plein air event... my first comment to them, is not Hello, but... "did you do your thumbnail!" I have sketch books, everywhere and use a Pentel Hybrid Techinca pen. I use a pen, so I don't get bogged down with erasing and worrying about mistakes. Glad I stumbled on to these podcasts. Good information
I use a fineliner to sketch for the same reasons. I first encountered this in a Peter Han Dynamic Sketching class.
your reason to use a 3H is so good! you're a genius!
You are very generous teacher !
LOve seeing your sketches
One of my professors in college always said - " Draw what you see & paint what you want others to see".
I try, but still need more practice.I do keep a little sketch bag in my truck now though.
Sketching is fun. I will do more- You make it look easy! LOL
Great presentation Charlie Martin UK
Thanks, Martin! Glad you find it useful!
some quality content right here
Thanks for the time and effort you and Betty Soo put into these vids! Do we know why cats have to claw their way up into our laps? It is surprising that you still have to motivate yourself to draw even after years of practice, hopefully that means we all out here shouldn’t feel guilty about that either.
Exactly. Feeling awful about what we don't do doesn't do any of us any favors.
