Keeping it simple. This is great. Heading to Home Depot right now..... This also facilitates my effort to make minishells. Cut the hull trimmer to a length to cut the shot shell to 1 3/4". This idea will give me a cleaner, straighter cut on the shell. You will have to raise the shell to crimp for shot. For Slug, I raise the shell just high enough to start the crimp holding the slug in place. Thanks for the insight........ Nothing like making your own tools. I used 3/4" x 2' PVC, cut it to the length needed for reloading mini shells using a band saw at work. Wrapped the PVC with painters tape to prevent saw chipping at the cut site.. The shot shells slide perfectly into the 3/4" pipe up to the primer base. I Dremmeled it out so that the primer base slides into the PVC. Cut length's of 2 1/2", 1 1/2" and 1" sleeves. I tell you. These shells are looking A LOT prettier than my previous attempts. Pretty proud to show people my shells at the range now. Wish I could attach pictures of the final produt to this comment. Much nicer than the ones I made from wood, and they trim exactly the same, with minimal hull loss (1/2" total loss). Great for making short/mini shells.
That's pretty cool idea. I used to cut down shells just to experiment putting wax in the end to keep the pattern Tighter and also to put 410 shells in my 45 Long Colt Colt 45 single action army. Why would you need shells cut at that length ??? Don't you need some part of the hull's length for PROPERLY closing the loaded shell (roll or star crimp) ???
It's possible to put an overshot card on top of the load of shot. If it's sized correctly, it'll stay on its own, but most people will add glue, wax, or fingernail polish on top of the overshot card to help hold it in place, especially if they expect their shells to get jostled either while being carried around in the field or under recoil in a gun that holds multiple shots. What I don't get is why he's doing the trimming at this stage and dumping shot out of a perfectly good, factory loaded shell. Why not shoot the shell as is, then trim it before you reload it?

I made one right after watching this .
This is great ,made one on the lathe. Knurled the body and stoned the end to a nice polish. Where do I send the royalty money?
Ps, I used iron pipe instead of conduit
I have been doing that for years,...but I just cut off the bad crimp,...and seal it with glue or wax. With 410's.
I've known about wax slugs for a long time and never made any. I might go to the garage and make Crayola defense rounds.
