In hindsight, outside of the education market, the iMac G3 never made much of a splash and almost no computers that came after took inspiration from it. But it did do one thing extremely well: it got people online far quicker and easier than any other system at the time. The all-in-one form factor was popular during the early 1980s for computers intended for professional use such as the Kaypro II, Osborne 1, TRS-80 Model II and Compaq Portable. Many manufacturers of home computers like Commodore and Atari included the computer's motherboard into the same enclosure as the keyboard; these systems were most often connected to a television set for display.
I love the all-in-one design by Apple. It helps a lot. Especially when you don't have the desk space for an outside box with all the hardware in it. I recently got an iMac G5 with iSight in perfect working order for free, with the original keyboard and mouse. A little upgrade of the operating system, RAM and software (iTunes, Safari, Garageband etc.) and I've got a mac that barely takes up any space. In fact, I'm typing on it right now!

But as someone who just upgraded their Mac (M1 to M2 Pro), and seeing how little has changed from Monterey to Sonoma (notice how I didn't say big sur), I worry that Apple is going to turn the Mac lineup into the iPhone lineup even more than they already have. You can't even upgrade a Mac's RAM or storage nowadays, you can't use Boot Camp, you can't officially install Linux, it costs $6000+ to get a Mac that has PCI-E slots, and even then you can't upgrade the memory OR install a graphics card since Apple disallows AMD and Nvidia to write drivers for Apple Silicon. I love my Apple Silicon Mac, I'm glad I didn't get into Apple during the 2016-2019 Butterfly Fiasco era, but that doesn't change the fact that older Apple was so much better and allowed for more customization and the consumer didn't have to spend as much and could spend more later if they chose to.

iMac: Monitor breaks down? Remove the cover, unplug the internal video cables, unmount the CRT, find a iMac compatible monitor, etc. PC: Monitor breaks down? Simple! Throw the old one away, and put a new one on your desk.
ginito Well then why do macs get viruses? They really do, it is just that Macs only mac up about 15% of the market so hackers do not need to make viruses for then and/or it will not be very useful!
the mac is actually one of the least protected platforms out there and is apparently dead simple to hack, it's just that nobody has the need to do so outside of simple academic purposes (i.e how do i do it and can i do it). for those who do it because of money. windows is much more at risk due to its popularity, it bears the scars of those attacks but that makes it a more secure platform in some ways. also ginito since UAC came in windows vista you also need password verification (or at least user verification) to do any core installation. that argument is 9 years out of date son.
I admit the iMac is less of a pain to set up when moving it around but PC can do a lot more. It really depends what kind of person you are. I work with both.
My roommate has a Macbook Pro. When I found out it cost him $2400 I was shocked. Apple thinks they have a monopoly. You can assemble all of the same (or even better) components found in Macs and put them into your own PC for a lower price while getting an operating system that is useful and manageable, rather than a test of your patience.
Apple should make another ad in which a Mac user needs to bring his/her Mac to the Apple Store for a broken display while the PC user just simply replace his/her monitor with another one under the desk. And count the time for sure!
Definitely worth saving 20 minutes on one time setup to have your OS 9 non pre-emptive multitasking, un-memory protected OS crap out every few hours, kill all its memory and need a reboot. Didn't show how much memory the kid needed to allocate to each application - hmm why not? I think I'll go back to my Amiga 500 - at least it had pre-emptive multitasking (in 1985).
Billy O'Reilly The bigger, or rather, heavier, issue is that the tray loading iMac was over 17Kg in weight. I'm not sure a 7 year old can actually lift that much out of a box and almost over their head onto a table.
Oh shut up it's easy to set up a computer even for a kid I know how to install Mac OS X Tiger I'll prove it by telling you the steps 1. insert disc start the computer hold down the option key 2. Select setup language 3. Click next 4. Select volume to install on 5. Erase the hard disk to do that click on options and erase and install 6.you can customise the install 7. Wait for the OS to install 8 Restart the machine 9. the intro video will play 10. Select language 11. Go through the setup steps (date and time setup user account etc) 12. Then your at the desktop
Some shoots from that video were used in the commercial "3 steps to get to the Internet", plug the power, plug the phone line and... there's no third step ;-D
I am pretty sure you can not play battlefield 4 in 4k at playable frame rate on the 5k imac. but don't take my word for it as I could be wrong as I have never tried it
Apple was very smart about their advertising. Still to this day, Apple manages to outperform their competitors in both software and hardware departments. Compiling all their competitors under a single generic category, the PC. A machine that which all consumers ought not carry intrinsic value -- for Apple gives their products a stand towards that of a superior sentient being.

yoshi arta ok, I must admit that if you had the money the mac was better in 1998. but today pc's crush macs... for example I own a mac laptop the macbook air 11 inch, it has a 1.7 ghz dual-core intel core i-5 cpu and 4 gigs of ddr3 1333 mhz ram for graphics they're almost not worth mentioning intel integrated hd 4000 graphics with 1024 megabites of dedicated ddr3. it can render a 5 second 3d animation clip with full settings in blender, in about 20 minutes. (that will be my benchmark) Then my desktop pc it has an amd athlon x4 750k quad-core processor at 4.0 ghz and 8 gigs of ddr3 1600mhz ram for graphics it's using an amd r9 270x at 1180 mhz with 2048 megabites of ddr5 video ram. so, the benchmark: the same 5 second clip was rendered with my computer in just under six minutes and my computer has so far cost 700€ in total when as the mac was 1099€ brand new... And if you have no idea what those specs mean then my point is made.
Prob why it was easier for the kid is because his Pc Comes In All In One And It's Not Just A Computer That Is Seprate with the pc and monitor and uses tons of cables the kids computer was the monitor and pc combined
+Some Guy on a Computer "In terms of professional work, yes Macs tend to do better" how do you do 'better' with half the performance of a pc for the same money?
+PlayDaGame | Those who will not see cannot learn. Yes, PC's are superior in the gaming aspect, but that's not Apple's primary concern. (Plus, my 2011 iMac runs much better than my 2012 HP.)
They fixed it before I even heard it existed. Not to mention, think of the insane amount of security updates you have to install on a fresh Windows installation vs OSX. Security updates are to fix flaws/vulnerabilities. OSX isn't flawless, but it definitely ranks higher in security.
I installed Mac OS 9 on my iMac G3 and it came with the thing, along with Netscape Communicator (which appears to be older than the copy of IE5 I got with the thing). I used IE to download Classilla, which is pretty much the only browser for OS9 that isn't half-assed.

Are we not going to talk about how a kid was able to lift a 40 pound mac
It came with a handle. Most CRT monitors and all-in-ones didn't come with any handles.
Johan got bored after 8 mins and 15 seconds and left the mac to take the dog for a walk.
iMac: Monitor breaks down? Remove the cover, unplug the internal video cables, unmount the CRT, find a iMac compatible monitor, etc.
PC: Monitor breaks down? Simple! Throw the old one away, and put a new one on your desk.
PC: gets a virus? Simple! GET REKT M8
ginito Mac gets a virus? Your are out of luck!
it doesn't; it requires password authentication for any core installation, unlike windows, son.
ginito Well then why do macs get viruses?
Hey Apple!
Try doing this video with today's technology!
Trippy Results are faster for the iMac because it's even lighter and faster
Setting up an iMac today - put power cable in, turn on, connect Bluetooth mouse and keyboard
@Tommy Scott >tries out windows vista on a 10 year old pc and clicks on every advertisment

I admit the iMac is less of a pain to set up when moving it around but PC can do a lot more. It really depends what kind of person you are. I work with both.
everyone gansta until Adam buys a prebuilt
MICROSOFT INTERNET EXPLORER ON IMAC?! NO WAY 2:23
Microsoft let Apple use it in 1997.
@@williamao8568 *made Apple use it
Back in the day they were the best. Now PC's rule supreme, funny how things change so quickly
Hikarmeme macs are still better fam.
Alright sheep, whatever you say my man. Have fun with your overpriced facebook machines while I enjoy real performance at a fair price
Hikarmeme But the SurfaceBook is more expensive than the MacBook Air, 12 inch MacBook, MacBook Pro, and even the base model iMac...
Did you notice that 'Virus Scan'?
Why are they comparing a prebuilt to something that is clearly not a prebuilt?
They are both pre built.
Why the iMac startup sound the same pitch as the New MacOS Big Sur startup sound
And you could install mac OS on it
Well, this promo only counts, when you first start your PC/Mac. After setting a PC up its as fast as a Mac
the dog's help was the winning move for the kid
Hahaha. How could a kid that's 7 years old know how to do this?
Billy O'Reilly because appole probably told him like filthy cheaters
Nick Greer
True. It is pretty impossible to hook up a computer at 7 years old.
Billy O'Reilly I have to admit, I was a smart kid. But I got a '99 Dell laptop working when I was seven, and was running Debian the next year.
Billy O'Reilly The bigger, or rather, heavier, issue is that the tray loading iMac was over 17Kg in weight. I'm not sure a 7 year old can actually lift that much out of a box and almost over their head onto a table.
Oh shut up it's easy to set up a computer even for a kid I know how to install Mac OS X Tiger I'll prove it by telling you the steps
1. insert disc start the computer hold down the option key
2. Select setup language
3. Click next
4. Select volume to install on
5. Erase the hard disk to do that click on options and erase and install
6.you can customise the install
7. Wait for the OS to install
8 Restart the machine
9. the intro video will play
10. Select language
11. Go through the setup steps (date and time setup user account etc)
12. Then your at the desktop
Some shoots from that video were used in the commercial "3 steps to get to the Internet", plug the power, plug the phone line and... there's no third step ;-D
This is one of my personal favourites of Apple Advertisements...
PC : hey mac
mac:whassap
PC: can you play battlefield 4 in ULTRA HD 40k ?
mac:mmmmm nope
This made me laugh out loud
Andhy Rheza you dont buy macs for gaming pcs, thats what windows machines and hackintoshes are for
Yes it can. Battlefield 4 is on Mac and Look up the *5k* iMac
***** Yeah that's what I said and how is it fake?
I am pretty sure you can not play battlefield 4 in 4k at playable frame rate on the 5k imac. but don't take my word for it as I could be wrong as I have never tried it
Rename this 'why I will never buy a PC'...
Any PowerPC to Intel compilers for OS X?
Gives a sentiment of “Grow up to know nothing but what has been packaged for you.”
Apple devices can do gaming; it's just that it's too expensive for most people:
www.apple.com/nz/imac-pro/
yeah good luck finding the same amount of games on steam that support OS X.
try bootcamp
Sam Holloway ur paying 12000$ for a rx Vega 56.
This is why I choose apple.
Enjoy your 100 dongles which is opposite of this advertisment
I have old macs from the imac G3 all the way up to a 2006 Pro dual processor and unlike my Windows based counterparts they just work. It's refreshing to have old machines that just work. It's ironic really as anyone asking about retro computers will be refered to Windows 98. I have a small but growing library of software and games for my old Apple machines and with these I can get straight to the fun instead of looking for drivers and such!
Haha, Mendlobear bested by a boy and his dog. We all have days like that, Adam.
iMac's rule!
To say it short:
Imac´s are for Noobs :)
Shut Up you noob Imacs are better than your crappy pc
iMacs are for humans.
Who do you mean?
yoshi arta
ok, I must admit that if you had the money the mac was better in 1998.
but today pc's crush macs...
for example I own a mac laptop the macbook air 11 inch,
it has a 1.7 ghz dual-core intel core i-5 cpu and 4 gigs of ddr3 1333 mhz ram
for graphics they're almost not worth mentioning intel integrated hd 4000 graphics with 1024 megabites of dedicated ddr3.
it can render a 5 second 3d animation clip with full settings in blender, in about 20 minutes. (that will be my benchmark)
Then my desktop pc
it has an amd athlon x4 750k quad-core processor at 4.0 ghz and 8 gigs of ddr3 1600mhz ram
for graphics it's using an amd r9 270x at 1180 mhz with 2048 megabites of ddr5 video ram. so, the benchmark: the same 5 second clip was rendered with my computer in just under six minutes and my computer has so far cost 700€ in total when as the mac was 1099€ brand new...
And if you have no idea what those specs mean then my point is made.
apple is better than microsoft thats what i say
Prob why it was easier for the kid is because his Pc Comes In All In One And It's Not Just A Computer That Is Seprate with the pc and monitor and uses tons of cables the kids computer was the monitor and pc combined
A Mac is more expensive than the iPhone X, shit boi 😂
iMac (GOOD) PC (N00BS)
Man but gaming isn't made for Mac XD
lol no
+Manuel Luis one of manliness biggest myths
In terms of professional work, yes Macs tend to do better but when it comes to games, Macs lag behind
+Some Guy on a Computer
"In terms of professional work, yes Macs tend to do better"
how do you do 'better' with half the performance of a pc for the same money?
Mac does. Pc For n00bs.
+Jackson F Yes Mac does!!!
lol no
+theotheroneification yes Mac does
***** No it doesn't try one in the Apple Store
+PlayDaGame | Those who will not see cannot learn. Yes, PC's are superior in the gaming aspect, but that's not Apple's primary concern. (Plus, my 2011 iMac runs much better than my 2012 HP.)
“God! It’s to bright!” -Me, as of writing this perhaps half a minute ago, 2021
@Spidermankevin78 i used windows 7 have you used any version of osx
today i'd say it doesnt matter how long it takes to unpack a PC if its gonna be on your desk for the next few years but it was a diffrent time
Back when the iMac was the real "Apple Computer". Now the iMac is a stopgap in between the MacBook and the Mac Studio. So sad...
Amazing, they managed to put an entire PC inside that CRT. And it’s not bigger than the other non PC inside CRT
They fixed it before I even heard it existed. Not to mention, think of the insane amount of security updates you have to install on a fresh Windows installation vs OSX. Security updates are to fix flaws/vulnerabilities. OSX isn't flawless, but it definitely ranks higher in security.
Hahahaha, back in the days :}
Love this.
Love the dog!
I installed Mac OS 9 on my iMac G3 and it came with the thing, along with Netscape Communicator (which appears to be older than the copy of IE5 I got with the thing). I used IE to download Classilla, which is pretty much the only browser for OS9 that isn't half-assed.
my question is where is the boy connecting the imac to the outlet
